Finally as fast as it looks
Was the best looking sedan , R/T made it fun. Had 99 base model , nice but slow.R/T handles like smaller car , goes like stink.Big ABS brakes bail you out of moments of inattention and bad weather. Slap snow tires on and also great in snow ( remove 17" summers )17" Michelins wear fast and are very expensive.
Best Car I EVER Owned...
in 50 years of driving including U.S., Japanese & English, all expensive to maintain & needing major work. On advice of mechanic, bought 2000 ES w/2.7L engine. Have NEVER had a major problem. In 10 years & 126K miles, have replaced one power steering pump & put new bushings on inner tie rods. Preventive maintenance is key; brakes, tires, check up & detail every 6 mos. Use 100% synthetic oil. No kids, no smoking, no food in car. Around town and in trips between TX & CA, routinely average 33 mpg. Hauled 5 adults & 2 tons of rock & made 4 household moves. She's still cherry inside & out. Will get another 200K or 10 yrs from her. Just bought a 2nd 2000 Intrepid cuz they don't make 'em anymore.
Can't wait to get rid of (leased)
(Bought new) Had locks on 2 doors replace, made a loud noise when operating. Low front end scrapes inclines/declines. Had thermostate replaced dealer said soon to overheat. Heat/AC vents just fell off of two - had replaced. Gears skip when pressing gas pedal in stop and go traffic. Does not hold value. Small back seat for legs. Trunk to high.
Beautiful..with a few quirks
I bought my red Intrepid (new) based on looks, but even my husband commented on what a wonderful car it has been. (Whew) My biggest gripe is the unusual noise the a/c gives out when the car is in motion: at takeoff, and then almost every 17 seconds it whistles/rattles for about 2 to 3 seconds until you come to a stop. I have driven in two other similar Intrepids and both did this same thing; other cheaper Dodges I've owned never did this. I also had problems with the front overhead light spooking us out by coming on of its own volition while driving; this was taken care of under warranty. Paint seemed to chip almost immediately, exposing the metal.
Wish I hadn't bought it!
I bought it new off the lot and had lots of problems with the dealer. Two days after I picked it up, the driver power seat fell into the back seat. Needless to say I should have learned my lesson then. I have now had three transmissions, 2 transmission mother boards, 1 transmission fuel something, all the seals around doors and trunk replaced and the air conditioning system replaced twice!!!! And if you can believe it Dodge won't buy it back!!!! I drive mostly highway miles and this car is not reliable. The transmission still slips and they claim it is just fine.
