Best of the full size vans

We bought the Chevy van because we wanted a vehicle that could sit 11-12 people, the Dodge Sprinter cost twice as much and doesn't have the towing power. We rented several vans for diferent long distance trips and compared. We have two other vehicles that are Ford and are very happy with them but the Ford Van fell short against the Chevy for handling and safety. The Chevy has way way less top heavy sway. Ford hasn't updated there van for a while, the chevy rides soo much better and seems to have more interior room. Over-all we liked the Chevy better and decided to buy one. It also has a lot more room behind the rear bench for luggage. We average 12.3 MPG with the 6.0 ltr but can tow anything

'09 Chevy Express Passenger Van

2009 Chevrolet Express LS 1500 3dr Van AWD (5.3L 8cyl 4A)
11 of 11 people found this review helpful

I've been driving several different vans of this model ranging from '06 to '09. The engine has very good power, and the AWD system really helps it grip the road. However, the gas mileage could be better, the best I've ever gotten out of it is 17mpg (on 87 octane gas). I don't like the traction control system, which just shuts off all power for several seconds if you lose traction, this can be quite unnerving when pulling out on to a busy intersection. I do like some of the features, such as; the on board tire pressure monitors and the oil life %. On the whole, a good van. Only problem I've had was a oil filter gasket leak, which as probably an installation fault by the garage.

I bought this van slightly used for my family of 9. That means that we are tough on a vehicle. Between Hockey practice, Basketball games, park runs and anything else that comes up, we pretty much live in this thing. We now have 413k miles on her. The engine and powertrain have been flawless. The only things that I have had to replace other than tires, oil and windshield wipers are shocks, brake pads, and a brake booster. The downfall is pretty much everything else. Because we have the classic chevy white, the paint pretty much quit one day and fell off on most of the van. It doesn't seem to rust, but it leaves you looking homeless. We are tough on an interior too. Because we have so much seat time, the seats have not been the best. The good news is that there is plenty of room for 6 car seats with extra space in between. Would I buy this van again? ABSOLUTELY! What would I change if I had the chance? I would get a paint color that doesn't fall off (If you can find one that isn't white. Good luck.)

I love my 2006 Chevy Express! My only complaint is that I can hardly ever find a parking spot for it. It's very long, and seems much wider than my other cars have ever been. (Suburbans)

My Chevy Passenger Van

I bought the van slightly used instead of 2008 Dodge Sprinter. The price difference(I saved over $25000) can pay for years of fuel, plus I will support an American-made product. Myself and the family are very happy with the van! The fuel economy is better then I expected (approx. 16.5 MPG on higway). The only minus would be the quality and the fit of plastic trim inside the vehicle.

I like my 15 passenger van for what it is but, it does have a list of things that could be better. If you want a reliable van built on proven technology with truck like towing and strength there is no competition except it’s GMC twin. There is no other truck based van on the market today built on the strength of a full frame. The fully boxed frame and underpinnings are truly heavy duty. All other vans on the market are unibody. This is the only van still available with a V8. For these reasons alone it stands out without equal. The 6.0 and 6L90 transmission are durable and reliable, one of the last iron block V8 engines out there. This van receives bad reviews for it’s dated technology and style. It is an older platform but I like the looks of the traditional North American truck based van and the piece of mind of known technology. However, a serious update to the interior and options would be ideal. Handling and driving is what it is on a vehicle this large. With the two wheel base lengths and standard stabilitrak it edged out its previous competition in the E series and Dodge in rollover resistance, but that is a low bar. You must be prepared to drive this van within its limits. It isn’t a car or a even a light truck and shouldn’t be compared as such. The airbags include front and side curtain and there is special glass in the rear sides that add safety and strength. However, there are no headrests after the first row. It should have had headrests in all rows. The build quality is poor with misaligned panels inside and out. Also the interior is made of mostly hard plastics, cheap but durable. Options are slim but you get the basics you need. Better backup camera and phone connectivity should be improved and made standard. The mirrors are big and very useful. A nicer sound system option would be a welcome improvement too. Fuel economy is low but within what you would expect for what it is in size and weight. About 14mpg in mixed mostly in town driving with the 6.0. I have hit 21mpg on the interstate driving at pace of traffic, not fast lane driving. Built in Wi-Fi works well and let’s at least five tablets stream video consistently it may do more but that is most we asked of it. There is a lack of cup holders and charging ports in the rear but the 110v outlet with extension cord substitutes for the latter. I purchased my van for just under 30k with 2k miles on it, as a program vehicle. That is a good value for passenger capacity, truck capability, and reliability. I have had my van a couple years now without any repairs needed. Much could be improved and updated as I have said but if you need large passenger capacity and truck strength there is no equal. People I know with more modern vans, like transit, are not reporting much if any better fuel economy even with much smaller engines, and they have had reliability issues that I have not. The small engines the competition use just have to work harder and will wear out faster while limiting towing capacity severely. The lack of a high roof has some advantage when it comes to parking garages, drive throughs, and cross winds that affect all vans. The drop down menu did not have the correct trim level I am reviewing here. To clarify I have a 2019 LT 3500 extended van with the 6.0 V8 15 passenger

This is a 2015 Chevy Express LT 2500 van. Got it in July 2017. It's the 12 passenger mocel with the 6.0 liter engine. I bought it to haul my dogs around in as we go to shows and performance events. It's got a nice interior and the multiple rear ac vents are great foR keeping the dogs cool. Exterior is in great shape and it looks good going down the road. Drives very easy (of course, I'm downsizing from a Dodge B3500 so pretty much anything drives better). Have made several short trips and I'm really satisfied with it. Update, August 2019: Now I’ve used it on long trips and to haul a utility trailer. Everything works great. The trips were easy. It handled the hauling with ease. I barely knew the trailer was there. Other than standard maintenance, I haven’t needed any repair work. Very happy wizth this vehicle. Update, February 2020. Over 75K miles. Still going strong no issues. Paint job looks great. No body issues. All systems working fine. UPDATE August 2021. Over 100K miles. Everything still working great. Had to have a relay switch for the power windows replaced and that was it.

Great vehicle. Huge in size and visibility. The Vortec V8 is very powerful and dependable. I previously owned a Chevy Astro with the Vortec V6 and it was also very reliable. I bought the base model but still had power windows and locks, cruise control and CD player. I bought it on Ebay from an owner in Las Vegas. I flew from Atlanta and bought it then drove it home. 2,150 miles!! Drove like a Cadillac. This is not an economical vehicle if you are considering one. However, it got about 15.5 mpg and I averaged 75 mph for 80% of the trip. I get lots of compliments on this van and the cargo space is enormous, especially when you remove the 2 bench seats. I am very pleased with this truck (van). Chevrolet got this one right.

This is my second Express van. I have the 12 passenger van, just the right size. The 08 has been given many up grades over older models. The seats can easily be removed, and you can almost put your whole house in there. My previous Express van was trouble free. My 08 came with no defects, so a good start.

Very comfortable to drive in both seating comfort and excellent handling. Very smooth engine and transmission with plenty of power. For a large van, economy is pretty good - up to 19 mpg on highway, and averaging over 16 mpg for all driving combined. Very efficient cruise control. This is a much more comfortable driving and handling vehicle than the Honda Pilot that it replaced,

I'm a father of four, we love traveling sometimes on really long trips. Most of the times our travels are done in our Dodge ram 3500 while towing a toy hauler. But when not towing our trailer we drive our Town and Country which is by far the most roomiest and comfort minivan that i know of. I always liked the Express van and i always wanted to drive one of them. I had the opportunity last weekend when we had 11 soldiers going up for training. I was the driver of course, at first i was very impress with the interior and locations of switches etc. However, as soon as i was trying to speed up to enter the freeway i realized how under power it was, i mean it reminded me of my old Tahoe mostly engine noise but no speed or power. Wind noise was pretty bad i couldn't concentrate as the noise was so loud it was hurting my ears. Some of the buttons specially the ones on the left side of the dash are just not ergonamic. The steering was hard after a four hour drive, turning radius is ok so i have no complaints there. On the way back i was too tired to drive so i ended up switching seats with someone else. I ended up sitting on the second row seats, big mistake i should've just suck it up and continued driving. The back seats are just so uncomfortable i wanted to open the doors and just off.

You would think gm would do a lot better on mpg. I'm lucky to get 15 mpg with no cargo and 12 mpg with 8000 gvw. The spli outside mirrors are very annoying. I'm still not used to them after driving it for 11 months. The plastic door panels clip in place and often pop out, then the clips break off, very cheap. At times it is difficult to see the driver info display because of the steering wheel.

If I hadn't been maneuvered into signing the contract before seeing the van I would've refused to buy it. The wiring in the cargo area is exposed and there's no option to cover it up. Ditto for the wiring that goes to the low quality rear view camera. The sheet metal in the cargo area has globs of putty oozing from the areas where the metal overlaps. The recycled junk that's stuffed under the rubber mat is bunched up in mounds in several areas. Where possible, panels are assembled using push-in clips rather than screws. That's quicker and cheaper to assemble but some of them don't stay in their holes. One of the options that I ordered was the accessory block (for adding equipment that needs power). This thing is inside the dashboard and completely inaccessible and obviously unusable and worthless. That required many phone calls to Chevrolet customer service to try to get a refund which was refused, but finally refunded by the dealer eventually. The side doors do not stay open at a right angle so I have to push in a block of wood in the hinge to get it out of the way. The On-star antenna thing is just slapped on above the driver area, not even straight, and not in the center or rear center like every other vehicle I see. It's practically impossible to add shelving to the irregular posts. I could go on and on but you get the idea!

Bought three new 2017 GMC vans to replace existing Ford vans for business. They have been in the shop for warranty work and recalls a total of 12 times in the last year. If it wasn't for the fact that I don't like the new Ford Transit vans I would have stuck with Ford. Don't buy a lemon if you don't need too!

The engine power of this van is on point. I have the rear camera - moniter on center mirror. I think a parking assist option is mandatory. There.s a trip computer that tells exactly how long your fuel will last. I was amazed. This van is great on gas, but it really depends on its driver. Enjoy!

I had a F-150 that I would have kept forever, but things change. This vehicle is a Wheelchair van. I'm in the wheelchair, so I have to have Mobility. (That's the one thing I missed most, mobility.) I could of purchased any other kind of vehicle, but this one fit my needs. This has Automatic side doors that open with a push of a button, a wheelchair lift designed to lift me and my chair into the van, and a driver seat that moves back and turns 100 degrees to the right, to let me load myself into the seat and eventually behind the wheel. The are upfit items brought to you by Braunability, (lift & doors.) and B & D, ( for the drivers' seat.) So this is a very specialized van. Hand controls were also installed. I haven't driven it much, but I plan to.

The only reason I’m giving this a one star is because I can’t give a zero. The worst vehicle I’ve ever ridden in or driven... The suspension is pathetic, it feels like you’re riding in a bouncy house. The entire interior is made of cheap cheap plastics AND when you get in, it literally feels like a car from the late 1980s or early 1990s. I cannot wrap my head around this being a 2018 model car and how the people at GM are ok with selling this piece of junk. Is brand image protection not a thing anymore?? I ride (and sometimes drive) this thing on my carpool/vanpool to work, 25 miles each way so I have extensive experience. Test drive a Ford Transit before even considering this POS.

I borrowed this vehicle for my growing family, and knew within 5 minutes it was horrible. The kids had to duck under seat belts to get to the 3rd row. No head rests for the back rows. You feel every bump in the road. What were the engineers thinking? They didn't think this through at all. Saving up for a Mercedes Benz Sprinter.
