BMW SUCKS - BUY SOMETHING ELSE

My wifes 2013 CPO BMW X3 was a beautiful vehicle for its very short life. I paid $30k for a certified pre-owned car with 45k miles in 2015. At 65k miles it cost $1200 to replace spark plugs (not included by BMW CPO program). At 75k miles the engine started blowing blue smoke. BMW practically rebuilt the upper half of the engine under warrantee. They had the car for a month. 2 weeks after getting it back, check engine light re-appeared and it went back to BMW. This time they charged us $800 for what they claimed was a non-warrantee repair. It is now 2019, the has 110k, no warrantee and failed inspection. It cost another $800 for engine service to get past inspection. This time the repair lasted 1 week and the engine light is back on. BMW is now quoting another $1300 engine repair. I agreed, but they called back to say the timing chain needs to be replaced for another $6000. I've owned the car for 4 years, done all suggested maintenance and repair, put 65k miles on it and now it will cost more to repair than its worth! On top of that, even though we drove it there to have it serviced, they're suggesting that it should not be driven. BMW offered $4k in trade. To salt the wound, they suggested that they'd pay $7500 if there was nothing wrong with it. So ask yourself this before you buy a BMW, do you expect it to last more than 100k miles? Do you expect it to hold any resale value? If your answer is yes, BMW is not the car for you.

X3 Xdrive28i - AVOID buying the F25/N20 engines!

71K miles in and the dealership is asking me to pay an upwards of 7K for fixing timing chain issues. I did some research and realized that there is a lawsuit on this car about inferior quality parts (brittle plastic) around the timing chain which causes engine to go bad.

Loving the X3

I have had four successive 5 series wagons. Sadly, BMW doesn't bring them to the states so I had to really consider what to get next. The X1 was TINY and just didn't feel like a BMW to me. Without question my last 5 had a more luxurious interior, but that's expected. The X3 has a much nicer interior than the current 3 series. The screen is IN the dash where it should be, not sticking up like a design afterthought. The engine/transmission combo is amazing; very quick and agile. It doesn't handle like a car, but much better than other SUV's. The tech package is very nicely done. Gas mileage is really good for the size. The car feels much lighter than my 5 wagon, much faster though.

BMW Engine Failure

Nice looking, fun to drive and comfortable but there are major issues with the timing chain. If buying a BMW used make sure the faulty timing chain issue has been looked at or repaired. When the timing chain fails it will result in complete engine failure and the cost of the repair is more than what the vehicle is worth. With just over 80k miles engine failure should not happen so future BMW owners beware and do some research.

I get more warning messages on the dashboard than the number of text messages I get on my cellphone. I purchased it as a CPO with 17k miles and currently is at 58k after 3 years of owning. I would have taken to dealership at least once every month for some electronic component or sensor failure. Luckily all those were covered under warranty. My extended warranty expires in a month and worried how much I would end up paying afterwards. I understand the parts are expensive, but why they are not reliable. I have a Toyota as second car and it has about 100k miles, other than the regular oil change I have not spent a penny for any other maintenance or repair. Many times I would receive a message as 'Transmission malfunction', and no gear would be engaged. Dealer says software problem, they have even completely reset the software on the car and still had the same problem for number of times. I invested on this car hoping to use it for at least till touches 200k, but will it is a million dollar question.
