Best in Class for 2023

Best all around pick in its class when looking at both the luxury and mainstream competition. Pros: Driving dynamics - Has more than enough power and is surefooted in corners. Braking is superb and has good braking feel. Comfort - Very quiet ride for its class and delivers a very supple ride. M sport seats provide ample lateral support though it is a bit hard to get in and out of due to the high bolsters. Fuel economy - Better than expected for the performance this car delivers. Build quality - Everything is well put together with high quality materials. Zero creaks, rattles, or noticeable panel gaps. Cons: Auto start/stop function - Can only be disabled through the touch screen menu and defaults to "ON" every time the car starts. Produces significant lag when at a stop and must be finessed in order to get the car to take off smoothly. Infotainment - Lack of physical switches and removal of rotary knob. iDrive8 feels like a downgrade from iDrive7. Steering feel - Feels highly assisted and lacks feedback. Overall this car is well worth the money, even when fully loaded at $50k.

Awful electronics and poor quality construction

We purposely invested in a BMW for its reputation for quality -- and we were sorely disappointed. The fancy display was trouble from the start; hard to navigate and operate, and cutting out the CarPlay connection at critical times. We reached our limit when the vehicle wouldn't start on a trip to Vermont; we had to have it jumped and wasted a day of our trip, losing hotel deposits and time. The repairs involved replacing parts in the system that were defective -- and would have cost $2,000 if not under warranty. This was not the experience we signed up for, so we sold the car after less than a year of use.

2023 X1 broken hearted

The 2023 X1 is my sixth BMW and my 4th X1, I turned in my 2020 and picked up the 23 in October, the car was riding perfect then about a week ago, I started hearing banging when I put on the brakes and when I turned left it got louder. My car has been at the dealership since Tuesday and they still don't know why, they opened a case with BMW to see if any other vehicle had the same issues. They called today and told me to come and pick up the car that BMW said this is the way all new X1's perform. I told them that this is unacceptable the car ran perfect for over 5 months and now this happens and I have to accept it. No, I won't the service department is contacting upper management to see what they can do. They even told me that they took another vehicle just like mine for a ride and the same thing happened. I wanted to know if anyone else's vehicle is doing the same thing. They are supposed to call me back tomorrow. Thank You for listening

Technology problems

I have to say that I downgraded to this vehicle from the 2019 X1. The 2019 was a refined piece of machinery, but I am struggling to appreciate the 2023 the same way. The auto-park feature hit the curb the other day, I am just happy it was not another car. The walk-away lock (and approach unlock) works - sometimes. The sport seats have negative lumbar support, and unless you purchased "active seats" you are out of options. I am about to duct tape support where I need it. Can't just crank up the heat with a spin of a button - there is no button any more. You need to tap tap tap tap a + button which is small enough that while driving, your finger drifts off and then you touch something else on the screen. Many actions have a latency, even the engine start button. You push.... then, after a small delay, it starts. You floor it, and after a small delay, it will downshift. You are unloading groceries, the hatch is open, you walk away, the car locks. You come to get more bags from the car, the car unlocks. The other day, the engine was off, my wife was sitting in the drivers seat with her keys inside. I walked away, the car locked, mirrors folded... She was just going to start the car and drive away. Oh... and a street that has been there for many years near our house apparently does not exist in the navigation system. It did exist on the 2019's nav. I sincerely regret upgrading.

Missing my 2018 x1 - Disappointing Remodel

I loved my 2018 x1 but needed to replace it due to high mileage. I thought the 2023 would be even better. Unfortunately, it's not. The car hesitates when speeding up. This is NOT safe. The lack of the middle console dial and knobs is annoying. Why get rid of them? That dial was such a great feature. Now you are forced to take your eyes off the road to change the temp or turn the station. Sure, you can use the voice assist but it is slow and unreliable. The other thing that annoys me is that you have to put it in sport mode every time you start the car to disable auto shut-off (car turns off at lights are when not in motion). Sports mode turns the car into a gas guzzler which defeats the purpose of even having an auto shut off feature. The former x1 was petite but had lots of storage areas. Now the car is wider (bulkier) and no longer has the discreet necessary storage areas. Yesterday there was a system update which disabled my blue tooth and my phone won't connect.

X1 ‘23 Still no remedy for IBS/DSC systems

Update Oct 24: I contacted BMW by letter and their rep responded with a phone call. I explained my utter disappointment at the glacial pace of their Recalls remedies and the virtually non existent Customer Service at all levels. The rep had no answers and was absolutely no help. I am done with the brand. I want to know my vehicle is reasonably safe. I have doubts about this one. Update: X1 '23 Recall notice was issued for the Integrated Braking System (IBS) Feb. 2024. It is mid April and there is no remedy and no service call. 😢 The fuel door would not open when I went to get gas and I've read online others have had similar problem. Fortunately. I had enough gas to travel a long distance, because the local BMW Service where I was, said it would take two days to get the part for the repair and that was the case. TWO DAYS. (Previous review)...it is quite nice. I was looking at more cargo, but BMW was making offers for my very low mileage 2020 2 Gran Coupe and offered the same lease on a new 2023, but as everyone knows, it’s all about supply and there weren’t any at my dealer. My salesperson had a notion, it was the X1 they were using as a demo, 41 miles, 2 months old. From the moment I got in, the upgrade in quality reflected in the seats was palpable. Love the engine, don’t love the Dual clutch. The start/stop is annoying and deactivating it each time you drive is worse. I am appalled at the ConnectedDrive. This program is the worst of the worst. I urge you all to read carefully the terms and conditions before clicking thru. You may have purchased heat capable seats, but you may have to subscribe to BMWs service in order to heat them. It is happening in Australia now! That is only the beginning. I may be parting ways with them if they push this anti-customer service down our throats. But I love the X1. Smooth drive, sporty, and luxurious….no, really this time.

Poor Reliability, Even Worse BMW Customer Service

California Driver, 04/27/2025

Took delivery December 2023; Sold the BMW X1 April 2025 due to terrible reliability, dealerships not fixing the car correctly and BMW Corporate being no help. In the first year, the car was back at the dealership 5 times for a total of 48 days. And chronic electronic malfunctions were *never fixed* in spite of the fact that I provided 101 photos and videos of various system malfunctions, they repeatedly told me they couldn't replicate some of the problem so they refused to replace the computer. For good measure, I brought the car to a 2nd dealer for one of those visits, reached out to BMW Customer Service and filed a Lemon Law Buy Back Appeal. BMW refused to help. Each BMW representative I worked with was more inept than the one before. Problems included: -Chronic loss of Apple Car Play connection with no ability to reconnect (literally hundreds of times and the iPhone 15 Pro Max works fine on our other vehicles) -Dash board screen malfunctions, error messages, and spontaneous menus popping up without prompt that caused temporary loss of use of maps, radio functions, climate control, etc. -Air Bag Malfunction Warning Light (a software module was replaced for that) -Intermittent loss of safety systems: collision mitigation, rear traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, automatic braking for no diagnosable reason. -Power seat memory loss intermittently -Doors not locking or folding mirrors intermittently -5 Braking System Recalls that took 6+ months to get fixed (this goes against NHTSA Guidelines)* -Major Transmission Recall that took 7 months to get fixed (also against NHTSA Guidelines)* I made it abundantly clear that if the car was not fixed or replaced, that they would be losing a repeat customer. Clearly BMW doesn't value my business. This was my 2nd and last BMW.

I purchased the car brand new , 5 months later , tires are low on thread , brakes need to be replaced after 5k miles. I have taken the car 3 times in the span of 3 months for recalls.

The car is agreeable to drive. The uptake from a stop involves some hesitation, as noted in most reviews. Its ability to remember and back the car out of the garage by itself is something I really like because my garage is narrow. The voice commands for navigation aren’t great. Neither is the map display. And the menu system for setting up options is too complicated. The front camera does not automatically turn on in driving head first into a space— you have to turn it on yourself. Rear cross traffic safety warning is just a subtle thunk, thunk, thunk, and car has to be in reverse. My Toyota is much louder, has a visual and audio warning, and is more aware. Ride is reasonably quiet and pretty good on bumps with my 18” wheels. On highway at a pretty steady 75mph get 36mpg. But in suburban driving, which is far from full of traffic lights, get about 22mpg.

Was looking for a small SUV to replace an Audi Q5 to use around town. I drive an M5 and this is for my wife who loves it. It feels way more expensive then it’s fully optioned price if $49k. M Sport package is a game changer if you want something that is more BMW traditional then mainstream modern BMW. Uses tried and true drivetrain and is sharp in person. Highly recommended.
