Overview

BMW planted its flag in the all-electric SUV space last year with the iX. It's about the same size as the company's midsize X5 and stands out with its roomy seating and impressive power and range. Even the entry-level xDrive50 has two electric motors, all-wheel drive, 516 horsepower and more than 300 miles of range. For the 2023 iX, BMW has gone even further with the introduction of the new 610-hp M60 version.

While the BMW's exterior design is frankly a lot to take in, the interior is stunning with high-quality materials all around and several lively color combinations to choose from. The latest iteration of BMW's infotainment system called iDrive 8 is displayed on a 12.3-inch driver display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. The iX is also available with a full suite of driving aids including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assistance and a remote parking function. There's also an available feature that allows for hands-free driving at speeds up to 40 mph on the highway.
The BMW iX competes with a growing list of options including the Tesla Model X, Mercedes EQE SUV and Rivian R1S. Check out our Expert Rating below for our test team's full evaluation of the iX's comfort, technology real-world range and more.
What's it like to live with?

Edmunds Expert Rating

Great
8.4
out of 10
We drove the 2023 BMW iX on our test track and on real roads. Our Edmunds team conducts rigorous independent vehicle testing, driving 500,000 miles a year.
Performance
8.5/10
How does the iX drive? Electric SUVs are redefining how large vehicles are supposed to handle, and the iX is a prime example. The weight of batteries mounted low under the floor really helps provide a hunkered-down feeling. The iX isn't really exciting to drive, but it corners with ease, and the light-effort steering creates the illusion of the iX being lighter than it actually is.
Our test vehicle came with the optional 22-inch wheels and tires. They provide decent levels of cornering grip and, in our emergency braking test, helped slow the iX down from 60 mph to a dead stop in an impressive 114 feet. In typical driving, the iX can provide plenty of regenerative braking, and that makes it easy to drive around using just the accelerator pedal and letting the regen handle the braking.
Brakes are important because the iX can boogie. Accelerating to 60 mph took only 4.2 seconds in our testing. That's quicker than most EVs (including the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron) and not too far off from BMW's gas-powered X5 M.

Comfort
8.5/10
How comfortable is the iX? The iX has some of the coolest-looking upholstered seats on the market today, and thankfully they're also comfortable to sit in. The front seats offer a generous range of adjustments and have effective seat heaters. The iX rides quite nicely on the road too. There's still a hint of sporty firmness rather than total cloud-like softness, but we suspect our test car's larger 22-inch wheels may have played a part here. It's also a quiet SUV, and wind and road noise is minimal on the highway.
Much of the iX's interior controls are touchscreen-based, and that includes those for the climate system. At least the primary temp settings are easy to access and make adjustments to. Rear passengers get two climate zones as well, plus a range of vents for excellent coverage. Overall, the system does an excellent job of maintaining a comfortable cabin.

Interior
8.5/10
How’s the interior? This interior — wow! Not only is the iX interior gorgeous to look at, it's highly functional too. It's easy to get in and out thanks to large door openings and low stepovers. Passenger space is generous once you're inside, with a flat floor throughout the cabin, ample headroom and legroom in both rows, and great shoulder room. Visibility is excellent, especially out of the front windows, and the available cameras can handle anything you can't easily see naturally.
There are a few downsides. Most of the iX's controls are touchscreen-based, and wading through layers of menus can be time-consuming and distracting. We also discovered that the white-lettering touch controls on our test vehicle's optional walnut center panel washed out in sunlight, which made it hard to see where the actual buttons are.

Technology
9/10
How’s the tech? The iX showcases some of the latest BMW innovations, and they're pretty impressive. BMW's suite of advanced driver aids can be hit-or-miss in how they perform, but they're a hit here. BMW's optional Highway Assist Plus even allows for some hands-free operation at low speeds when conditions permit. The infotainment system takes a while to learn, but overall we're impressed with the operation of the iX's tech. BMW's voice-activated virtual assistant is also a cut above most voice control systems in how it responds and its ability to change things like the climate control settings.
BMW pushes the envelope even more with its Android smartphone integration. Android users can quick-pair their phones to the car, and navigation directions show up as turn-by-turn directions in the driver's gauge cluster. Our test car also had the optional Bowers & Wilkins audio system. We found it pretty impressive, and it had a few party tricks up its sleeve like "4D bass," which essentially vibrates your seat in concert with the music for a more immersive experience (though it can be disabled). Why just listen to podcasts when you can feel them?

Storage
8.5/10
How’s the storage? There's 35.5 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats, which is much more than what the Audi e-tron offers but not quite as much as the Tesla Model X. The rear seats can split and fold flat in three sections and have convenient release buttons at the rear hatch. But there is no front trunk like on the Model X. Interior storage for small items is also a bit lacking. The door pockets and center armrest bin will be your best options.
The iX accommodates child safety seats with ease thanks to copious rear seat space and easy-to-access anchor points. But you might be disappointed in the iX if you want to tow; BMW does not rate the iX for towing.

Range and Efficiency
9/10
How are the range and efficiency? The iX xDrive50 has an EPA-estimated range of 315 miles when equipped with the optional 22-inch wheels like our test car had or 324 miles with the standard 20-inch wheels. Impressively, we easily exceeded the EPA's estimate on our standardized real-world EV range test route. Here, the iX drove 377 miles on a single charge, which is one of the longest distances we've gotten so far from an EV.
Efficiency, or how much electricity the iX uses when driving, is also impressive. We measured 32 kWh used for every 100 miles of driving. That's one of the best results we've seen in the class and similar to what we've observed from less powerful EVs such as Ford's Mustang Mach-E.
The iX comes with an 11-kW onboard charger. BMW estimates it can charge from zero to full in a little over 10 hours on a Level 2 home charger (assuming you've got the right hardware and under optimal conditions). It also has DC fast-charging capability up to 195 kW, which can recharge the battery from 10% to 80% capacity in about 40 minutes.

Value
8/10
Is the iX a good value? The iX is not what we'd consider affordable when taking a quick glance at its price tag. But if you start lining it up against its segment competition, the iX begins to look like more of a bargain. Build quality feels incredibly solid. Everything in the interior looks great, carries a bit of heft and is tightly screwed together. This is easily one of the better modern luxury interiors we've seen to date.
BMW's warranty is comparable with coverage of most luxury brands. Basic coverage lasts for four years/50,000 miles, with generous rust-through coverage of 12 years/unlimited miles and a battery warranty of eight years/100,000 miles. BMW provides complimentary maintenance for three years/36,000 miles, which is a plus, and two years of free fast charging (30-minute sessions at a time) on Electrify America's charging network.

Wildcard
8/10
If we're being honest, we're not thrilled with the front-end design of the iX. It does look unique, but it may be a bit too bold for most palettes. The styling alone may be a nonstarter for some people.
If you're able to get past the exterior, the interior is where it's at. Clean, modern and functional, it's a place we'd love to spend time. Behind the wheel the iX can be fun to drive, but more so we find it easy to drive. Speed is readily available, and the lightness of controls and responsiveness to inputs just make the iX easy to maneuver and place. Did we mention it has a hexagonal steering wheel? Endless conversation starters here.

2023 BMW iX trim level differences
For its second model year, BMW adds the M60 trim to the iX lineup, joining the xDrive50. Both versions of the iX have all-wheel drive with two electric motors. The xDrive50 is good for 516 horsepower, while the new M60 puts out a ground-stomping 610 hp. Every iX comes with a 106.3-kWh battery pack, with EPA-estimated range of up to 324 miles in the xDrive50 and up to 288 miles in the M60. (See our Expert Rating for details on our real-world range tests.)
Which iX trim does Edmunds recommend?
We recommend the iX xDrive50 because it offers impressive performance and has better overall range for less money than the new M60. The optional Convenience package is also worth getting for its Harman Kardon sound system, augmented reality navigation and surround-view camera.

2022 BMW iX xDrive50 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
I picked up mine a couple weeks ago. Came from Tesla Y. Before that was a Mercedes GL450. Going to the Tesla was my test to see if I’d like electric. And I did- the Tesla was a good car. But I missed the refinement - the comfort - the precision of craftsmanship. And now that I have the iX, I have the best of both worlds. This is the best car, hands down, that I’ve ever owned. The … suspension is so perfect. The headlights (laser lights) are absolutely spectacular. Auto high beam reacts as fast as any human can to other cars. I don’t worry about it like I did with the Tesla- the Tesla was always just a little slow to adjust. When high beams come on, it’s theatrical. The middle of the road illuminates, and like opening a curtain on a stage, the high beam spreads wide (over about 1/2 second) across the road and to the trees and fields beside you. When you turn the wheel, a light fades in to the direction of your turn and fades out when the wheel returns straight. The B&W audio is absolutely spectacular. It’s the first car audio system I’ve not made a single adjustment to- no tone control, no EQ. Perfectly flat is superb. Oh, it’s stupidly quiet. Everything about this car is perfectly choreographed, measured, and intentional. I absolutely love it.
Unbelievably fast and amazing sound system

2023 BMW iX M60 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
This is my first electric car. Everything works as it says. The sound system is absolutely amazing. Range is very good. Small things that are odd. Front hood does not open for storage. Only can be opened by bmw. No home link on the mirror. Overall very happy with purchase. Can drive it very easily slowly around town. When you want acceleration it takes off with head snapping torque.
First EV, now I’m spoiled. iX xDrive 50

2023 BMW iX xDrive50 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
Being my first EV, I’m blown away by its efficiency, comfort, quietness, acceleration, and style. The polarizing exterior style grows on me, and interior just impressed me from my first test drive. When you are inside and enjoying this vehicles interior, it could look like a rolling 💩, and I don’t care, LOL. I’m seeing better than EPA mileage as most have, and charging has been a … breeze. Nice plus is BMW’s 2 years of free public charging at Electrify America. Basically, free fuel if the EA works for you. Home charging is a breeze too. There is a plethora of tech, which I like simple better, but it can be a set up and forget it too. If you have a iPad, you’re right at home. The climate controls are amazing, and winter comfort is better than any car I’ve driven in 44 years. Love the heated steering wheel, door panels and console that surround you in addition to immediate climate comfort. Enjoy the “Climatization” on phone app that preconditions (pre-heat or cool) with a simple touch before departing. There have been a few minor glitches with apps, but no big deal. Afterall, it is a rolling computer.
Update after 14 months of use. This iX50 has done great in the winter snow. The preheating or cooling of the car before entering from a phone app is fantastic. Heats or cools in 5 minutes. Economy is great, getting a surprising 360 miles in summer.with a 100% charge, which I do only when traveling. Winter temps cut that by about 20%, depending on temps. Trouble free, best car I’ve ever owned.
Update 6/24: This has been the best car I’ve owned, and that’s in the dozens of new cars. I’m doing a bit more traveling in SE USA mountains and charging is an issue. I traded for a 2025 BMW X5 50e PHEV. It gives me great round town zero gas for 45+ miles, and great fuel economy of 35-45 mpg on road so far. Very similar to iX.
Update 1/25: The iX was the best car I’d owned. However, being a full EV, I found charging in the wild to sometimes be a hit and miss. By this I was finding that only using fast chargers in the wild, I’d encounter non functioning chargers or waits for a charger sometimes. It was frustrating to pull up to a bank of 6 chargers in use and 4 of them being finished, yet no one there to open it up. So you’re stuck waiting. Home charging was a breeze and provided 300+ miles of range but I’d still get range anxiety after 200-250 miles not knowing if a good charger would be available, even using charge station location apps. So I took the EV value hit and ordered a 2025 BMW X5 50e PHEV. The PHEV better fits my lifestyle, as I drive it 80-90% of the time in all electric, and then have the wonderful in line 6 twin turbo to carry on when traveling. Bottom line, iX is wonderful if charging away from home works for you. In SE USA, charging is not ready for EV life.

2022 BMW iX xDrive50 4dr SUV AWD (electric DD)
I have had this car since 6-22 and its amazing- the best care I have every driven. An EV with the space, refinement, function and luxury of a BMW SUV. My only gripes- no adaptive cruise and as soon as winter hit (In Raleigh NC). the battery range/ miles dropped significantly. I went from 365 (at 95%) for long range trips in the summer to 265 miles per charge in November. I hope they … can fix this because everything else is perfect. It does feel like having your cake and eating it too.
