Feisty, fun-to-drive and liveable coupe
My car is a 2021 230i MSport with 6 speed manual (Edmunds, get with the program on the review model choices, please), custom ordered and picked up 1/15/20. I was going to get the base suspension but my sales rep recommended the MSport based on my needs and wants, and I'm glad of that recommendation now. The car comes with performance non-runflats/top speed limiter increased from 130 to 155, which is academic in the U.S. but a nice to know. My experience so far is that the car has bags of personality and feels neutral and agile on back roads. The interior quality is high and the climate control holds a temperature well. The only complaint I have so far is the electrically assisted power steering, which lacks the feedback that the E90 325i I had a few years ago gave. Sport mode makes it heavier, but doesn't really add feel. In this respect, the Camaro has a better system. But overall I love the car. It's fast, comfortable, looks great in a slightly stubby way. It's a terrier in dog terms, or a light agile fighter as an aviation reference. More sports car than GT -- I imagine the 4 series filling that role. It is obviously less powerful than the six, but the M240xi, for instance, weighs 300lbs more, much of it over the front end. I drove that brutally fast car recently but found that I prefer this for its friendly nature and better balance. The manual may be slightly slower but who's measuring, and it transforms the experience. The cockpit is a great office -- everything readily at hand with good, simple analogue instrumentation.
