Love my Car
My first Audi. Reliable, comfortable, safe and somehow . . . lovable. My satisfaction with my A4 helped persuade at least 4 other friends to purchase their A4s, A6s and TTs. I'll never be able to go back to 2WD after driving Quattro!
Audi 2.8 Quattro
I love the car, but fixing even little things can be very expensive!
- 2.8 Avant quattro WagonMSRP: $10,995194 mi away
- 2.8 quattro SedanMSRP: $3,4001,082 mi away
feels like new at 127,000 miles
This car has been the best I've EVER owned. I have a Lexus that my wife drives with lower milage and I must say the A4 has held up much better. I drive a twisty road along a river in Vermont that makes this car shine. I have replaced the lower control arms and one wheel bearing, the T.belt kit, W/pump because I was so close doing the T.belt, use Mobil One oil with Audi filters. The low end works so well when you need to step out, even in the snow and ice few cars can get out of the way as the Audi can. I admit adding a mild chip bumped the Hp to just over 200HP. The 1.8t keeps a good balance over the heavy 2.8 and
Great fun w/some drawbacks
I love driving this car - whether it's just to the store or on a 300 mile vacation. This is my first AWD and I now swear by it for the best traction and overall feeling of safety. However the problems with the engine and catalytic convertor, combined with the cost of maintenance, sour the experience. After three years of ownership, I've replaced the cat three times. The engine work is another nightmare altogether - suffice to say it cost me nearly $5k. I still love the car in spite of all that.
Audi VS Detroit
Past owner of Corvettes and just traded in a 1994 Z-28 that I loved with 140,000 miles on it. This Audi handles corners like it is on rails. The power is less than my Z-28 but very usable with the 5 speed automatic slap shift option. Loves the highway. Great car !
great value for money
It is an incredible vehicle at this price point. Hard to beat the AWD in tough weather conditions and the V6 is as smooth as you could want it to be. The styling is still up to date even with the refreshing the line recieved in 2002 due to the fact that the new A4 looks like the A6.
Nice Ride.
Firm suspension. Great 4 wheel compact luxury car.
Audi A4
Great value. Exceptional exterior and interior styling. Superb handling with adequate performance. Reliability not in keeping with design and technology.
Well worth the money - and repairs.
I have had my share of problems with the car. Broken turbo, tie rod ends, control arms, wheel bearings, and the ignition switch. But with all the broken things, I just replace them with aftermarker parts, which make my car so much more enjoyable to drive. I have upgraded the turbo from a k03 to a k04, put in heavy duty control arms and tie rod ends, put a full race coilover kit (KW), made a custom 3" Turbo-back exhaust with hi flow cat, and did many other little things, that would cost more to replace with OEM parts than what I did, yet I yeild much happier results. This is a drivers car. Quattro is AMAZING in snow/incliment weather.
Probably won't buy another one...
For about 2 years, it was by far the BEST used car I ever owned... Then I hit 60,000 miles... Since then the car was in the shop every other week. My brakes gave out, tie rods were shot, 4 tires had to be replaced, ignition coil replaced, headlights replaced twice, speaker blew, cd player stopped working, fuel pump went out, trunk stopped opening, alternator kicked it, and the AC compressor died. Finally, I decided to give up and sell it, and literally the day before, the timing belt broke. It has now been at the dealer for 2 months, as of yesterday. All told, approx. $8800 for repairs since 60,000 miles (and I never did get the AC fixed). Bah.
Audi state-of-the-art technology
This is my first Audi, which has totally impressed me with its technology and quality. Especially, its state-of-the-art AWD System {i.e. Quattro}. The Car handels extremely well under all road conditions and is most definitely a solid car. The Tiptronic Transmission is another piece of technology that distinguishes the Car from other upscale sports sedans, with its ability to shift either manually or use the automatic feature. The Car is most definitely a quality automobile, but does have its share of electrical reliability problems that are typical in most cars that offer a wide variety of power options.
Love with reservations
This is a great car - fun to drive, super traction and cornering, very good curb appeal. I love the styling - I just can't get into the newer A4's and A6's.
Will Look Swanky in 2020
Unlike the Passat wagon, Avant styling is sublime, it's performance striking. It's in the details. VW settled on aluminum roof racks, A4 goes steel. VW goes for a painfully boring interior, Audi goes tight & classic. Avant is designed with just enough room for hauling, but it handles like a cool, little sportscar. Drawbacks: no backseat space. A4 performance at low speeds is annoyingly sluggish. It zips confidently on the highway, but the neighborhood runs is a crawl from 1st to 2nd gear. This for a V6? The red dash is cool, but tough on the eyes.
i love my car
There's nothing I can say that someone already hasn't covered. Quattro is unbelievable in rain, gravel, snow, and grass (hehe). The acceleration is good, but not stellar. The gas mileage hurts a bit too much for the Quattro though, seeing as how I average 21 mpg on 93 octane. For a compact car I'd expect a little better. All in all, if you can afford the gas and want to stick to the road (or whatever surface you're driving on), get the A4Q. The suspension is definitely a problem. You'll just have to get it fixed. It feels good in the city, even better on the freeway, super firm yet comfy enough for long trips. I love my car.
not worth it
Bought this car 2 months before warranty run out. Since then, it has been a year and half and I've just totaled my repair bills. $6400! Water tank, timing belt, sun roof, gaskit, alarm, brakes, you name it. I wonder is it just this car or this model.
Unsung Hero
Bought used 1.5yrs ago with lowish mileage. Been a good car with only one failure that warranty covered. Love the ergonomics, build quality, high quality materials throughout and advanced engine and drivetain design (AWD). Car is a great do everything vehicle, with reasonable performance (0-60 in 7.1 seconds)
This one's good!
Bought new; 69,000 miles in 5 years. Very few problems, radio replaced, new dash cover, all under warranty. Average 24 mpg in mixed use driving. Ride quality has deteriorated in last 10k miles, rear dampers need replacing. Great highway car; relaxed, quiet, very comfortable. V6 power adequate. Dealer experience very favorable (Commonwealth VW/Audi). This is my second A4, and they both have been excellent. None of the repair nightmares so sommon on this list. My cars are very well maintained, and driven sensibly. Bose stereo, driver's seat, and overall interior ambience have kept me enjoying these cars for this long (8 years and 120,000 miles between the two).
Best car owned
Have almost 100k miles and car is as tight as the day I bought it. Not as much as 1 problem with the car. Cruises easily at 85 mph, yet handles the turns with ease. Quality of materials used is A1, and the car is a beauty to look at, still get compliments after 2 years of owning it.
Don't buy it
Fun to drive, handles snow very well. Repairs frequent and very expensive. Have had to replace two headlights, head gasket, and timing belt at 74,000 miles. $4000 so far. Rub rails falling off the car, (defective brackets), transmission shifts rough. Audi's QA doesn't measure up to selling price. I will never buy Audi again
MUST HAVE $$$ TO BLOW
Can't possibly fit all of my experiences in this small review. Purchased used w/ 50k miles, audi assured, well maintained by Audi by the book. Secretly phoned dealer where car was originally serviced and found it had many issues not disclosed to me prior to purchase. Numerous issues, some major and other minor. Audi servi ce is bad (5 different dealers in 3 different states).
disapointing A4
I love my car, but this machine has cost me plenty of headaches and thousands of dollars to keep it running. So far I've replaced several major parts in the engine that should have lasted the lifetime of the vehicle. I expected Audi to produce more reliable machines.. this one is not.
Good Car, Bad Service
Good car and good company until my servicing dealership performed unauthorized work on my vehicle. Audi customer service claimed there was nothing they could do and I would have to take it up with the dealership. On top of that, they didn't even do the service correctly. They aligned my car and claimed it was perfectly straight with the steering wheel cocked to the left. They requested I take it to another shop and if they think the steering wheel isn't straight, then they will fix it. It took them three visit and three weeks without my car and my wheel is still off center. Believe it or not, the car was in better condition before I dropped it off at the dealership.
Reliability seems like hit and miss...
Did alot of research for this car. I bought it with 40K on the odo. So far, I have 75K and still going strong. Soon as I bought the car, I chipped it and threw in K&N filter. Boosted the output considerably (Need it b/c I have tiptronic, Porsche version). Definately a must if you own this car. About to put in exhaust (surface rusted) and NOS sprayer for intercooler. Handles very well but not too harsh. I do lot of hi-way traveling. Pretty quite for car of this size and sportiness. I love the AWD on this. Drove to ski resort and surprise to find that I can drive 35+mph on them slippery stuff. The ski boot was another neat feature. Didn't know I had it! Gotta like the heated seats;^)
Never Again!!
I was in love with my Audi for the first four years. Now, in the past 18 months I have spent $7000 repairing it. First the water pump was leaking, then the heat exchanger went, now the car is in the shop gettin the tensioners replaced which is a $2200 job. Once this problem is fixed, I am selling the car and going back to Japanese cars - I can't afford this German engineering any longer!! The styling on this car is terrific, but it's not worth the cost!
Fun to Drive Sedan
We've had this car for 5.5 years and its been great to us. Fun to drive, great in the snow and ice we get in the north, and very rich in the interior department.
Great Little Car
Bought car Certified at 50k and have had no problems since. Now at 90k, car gets even better with age. Have Volvo V70R AWD and the Audi kicks butt all around.
not bad, not great
I also dreamed about an A4 for years before getting my 98 A4Q Tiptronic. The quattro is awesome in the snow. But the entire transmission was replaced at 22k mi (under warranty fortunately) and dealer could not explain why. Plus few other misc repairs. Now it's out of warranty, I think I'll get something more reliable. This is a great looking, fun car to drive with a lively engine. But it's not as reliable as my old Audi 90.
My first and last Audi
I bought my Audi new in 1998 after comparing it to the BMW. To me, the Audi "felt" like a more sturdy car. Needless to say, my Audi has been anything but sturdy. A design flaw keeps the front-end of my car flapping in the wind most of the time. My salesman has 'never seen or heard of' this problem. The service people 'see it all the time'. I pay to have it fixed - at least twice a year. Friends laugh when I get out of my car and pound my bumper back on with my hand. A new warning indicator lights up every other month. Audi's response? $$$Ca-ching... I paid my car off 6 months ago. Now my monthly payment goes to repairs.
5 Years and Still Loving it
After a few frustrating episodes with the dealer on service issues, I still love this car. I've got 65k miles and it looks and rides like brand new! Just took a 1,000 mile trip and averaged 30mpg while averaging 75mph!
A great car, when it works
First of all I would like to say that overall, I've had pretty good luck with this car considering all of the problems items I've read about in other reviews. It has great interior and exterior styling, rides nice, and coupled with good tires, the AWD is awesome for the New England winters. But If you are going to purchase an earlier year Audi, 3 conditions must be met. 1- make sure you are under some kind of warranty 2- If not, make sure you are handy with a wrench (many of the problem items can be fixed yourself). 3- if you can't fix it yourself, find a good mechanic as the dealer repair costs are horrible.
Solid as a Rock
I purchased my A4 used with the Audi Assured warranty -- a good bet. After 3 months a cracked tie rod boot only cost me the $50 warranty deductible instead of $400. People mistake the car for brand new even though it has over 50,000 miles on it.
THE CARS THAT SPOIL YOU
I have put 18000 miles on my beautiful red/black leather interior/5speed/Quattro in the past 18 months and I love it. The only disappointemnt was the Bose speaker in the rear blew and Audi would not repair it. I think Bose should have replaced it, but Audi covers it only to 50,000 miles, which I think being a Bose, one of the best they should cover it. Besides that it is so nice looking and handles like a dream. In the rain 65 on aramp is nothing. It is wonderful. I've had 45 cars so far in my life. My 2nd Audi and I just love them. Can't be beat!
Stay Away!
Bought this car in '98, thought I was buying the ultimate car. All the seals leaked, problems with exhaust. Tie rods went, radiator developed a leak, as well as water pump. Wheel bearings went in two wheels, all with less than 50 K miles in 5 years! Noise in rear of car that two car dealers could not find, then told that rear suspension needed replacing. Traded in for a Honda, very happy now, but experience with Audi, who did not compensate me for my expenses and agony, was miserable. Audi is a four letter word to me now. Don't buy an Audi.
Qauttro all the way
I have owned my A4 for 3 years and yes I have replaced a lot of parts, but with some research and a little know how, repair costs are 1/4 of what dealers charge. It handles great, has nice interior and looks great. I will never buy anything but an Audi again period!
Nice Little Car
I purchased this car used from a guy in my neighborhood who took great care of the car (a 1.8T Quattro.) He only had 20K miles on it when I bought it from him. So far so good with the car. It has the chip and is fast, but doesn't have the best pickup from the line. I love the car. It is comfortable, looks great and the build quality is fantastic! I am still looking for an Audi club in the Phoenix area, so I can get some tips from other owners...
You'll love driving this car
Back to the dealer for service... lots of it. Mine was purchased new and has 48,000 miles on it. I've replaced the computer, catalytic converter, cam tensioner seals, 5 instrument panels, 3 batteries, coolant reservoir, coolant temperature sensor, fuel guage sending unit, stereo, 2 speakers, and the alternator. Over $4,000 in billable repairs since the 3 year warranty ran out not including maintenance items.
1998 A4 Avant
The ride is solid, road feel is excellent and it looks great. I purchased it used with 37k miles at the end of the original 4 year warranty period. I purchased an extended warranty from a local Audi dealership which has paid for itself in service cost savings. The warranty covered the instrument cluster, an oil gasket leak, a cv boot and a power window switch. My dealer has given me excellent service and the car has held up well under daily commutes in the Arizona heat. The cost of wear and tear maintenance is high. Find a mechanic other than the dealer for the regular maintenance items.
Audi A4 needs a lot of repairs
This car is really fun to drive but has needed a LOT of repairs. In a little over 2 years it has needed 6500 worth of repairs. I spoke to the extended warranty company (thank goodness I bought that) and he said they are losing their shirt on Audis. It is still a blast to drive, but beware of repairs.
Nice but...
Nice car if you can afford the high dollar repairs. Ball joints have been a constant problem. Transmission went out completely at 80,000 miles even though the car has been very well cared for and driven lightly.
A4 Quattro
One of the best handling cars and most fun cars to drive. Good power (but not great), great handling (better after lowering), and adequate comfort. Good mileage, and with all wheel drive is a car that you can take just about anywhere on any road under any conditions. Exceptional brakes, although peddle pressure required is high -- suggest changing to Brembo disks and calipers. Reliability, outside of front suspension parts, is outstanding. After more than 150,000 miles, it still feels and runs like new.
Fun to drive, expensive to repair
I loved the road handling and the way 80 mph felt like 35 mph. -Quattro will take off some low end grunt from a stand still. The styling is very slick and the interior very comfortable. However, I found the car to require frequent, expensive service.
disappointed
Bought this car new. Loved the looks and how it performed in the snow. However, I spent way too much time at the dealer. Replaced 3 airbags, starter, wheel bearings, tie rods and had repeated "check engine" problems. All the exterior molding fell off and interior was poor quality. Brake handle broke,as well as other interior parts. Spent $31000 for the car and it was not close to being worth it. Did not hold it's value and was not impressed with Audi customer service. Bought a new Subaru Legacy and love it.
Not reliable at all
This car is junky. I owned it less than a year and had $7000.00+ in repairs. Most of the time this was my primary vehicle, I was driving my 1995 Dakota instead, because it always runs. The timing belts on these will not last until the recommended service interval. This is critical for you to replace early if you have a 2.8 car. You will be VERY VERY unhappy if your belt goes. This will cost you thousands. Just replace the belt at about 50,000. I promise you'll be glad you did. After that disaster, the car still has not been running well, and as you know it takes weeks and weeks to get these repairs done on an a4 at any of the dealerships.
$$$$ to own Beware of maintenance costs
Bought the dealer's demo and got the 3- year warrenty. At 45 k, the problems started - front suspension - $ 766; tie rod end and water pump - $ 1245; 60 k - rear half shaft bearings - $1400; transmission valve body $ 3200 and now the ABS unit is shot and it's back to the shop for another $3000. That is $9611! Parts and service are very expensive! I am selling and cutting my losses. I'll be buying a Honda or Toyota or an American car from now on. What a piece of junk!
Great car with an extended warranty
Bought car new almost 5 years ago. Love driving it but there's no excuse for having to replace the battery 3X, the instrument panel 2X, the alternator, turn signal stalk, tiptronic magnetic switch, computer, coolant temp sensor, fuel tank sending unit, coolent reservoir, cam tensioner seals, hazard flasher switch, radio, 2 speakers, and 2 CV boots in 48000 miles. I keep looking behind me to see if the extended warranty company has sent Tony Soprano after me!
Audi A4 1.8L quattro
We live in snow country with 200 average inches per year so whatever car we bought had to have all wheel drive. No SUVs allowed--I'm a sports car fan. The choice was between Suburu and Audi and we did not make a mistake. Even though we are 250 miles from our dealer we have made the scheduled service dates and they have treated us well.
1998 AUDI Quattro, 2.8
This is my fourth Audi. It is not as dependable as the other three, with small maintenence problems.
Excellent Car
I love my A4. Got it for $11,000 a year ago. Just throw a APR chip in it and it's a blast to drive. Now it's got 200 Hp / 240 lb feet of torque & still gets 30 MPG. Excellent used car to buy. Be sure to do the timing belt before 75K & let the car run for a minute or two to cool the turbo before turning it off. These cars hold up great, still nice and tight with 80K on the odometer. Just change the oil, spend a little extra for mobil 1.
Pain in the you know what
Bought it in 03. The thing is expensive to repair 1200 for a timing belt??? Also the control arm on mine is going or gone along w/ the tie rod ends and I've heard that it is a problem on the 98's but audi has not officially made it a recall on all 98s...thats another 2k down the drain. The car is very good in the performance area but could use a hp boost seeing how a chipped 1.8T would already out do it in hp.
Born to drive
I bought my 98 A4 2.8Q in august of 2001. It had 70k miles on it. Since, I have put 22k miles on the car and have not had 1 single problem with anything mechanical or electrical. The build quality of this car is superb. With almost 100k miles the car doesn' creak or moan anywhere, it is solid as can be. Very impressive for almost 100k miles, but that is why it is an Audi.
