Hello jpkenny, Ive been having the same symptoms with my 2001 Saab 95 and can't quite figure out what the problem is. Did you resolve yours and if so what exactly was the problem? Thanks
fiftycentman, I have a 2001 Saab 9-5 6 Cyl SE. In fact, it's my second one. First one was totaled in a wreck. I replaced it with the same year and model. (Yes, I know these cars are expensive to maintain but when your son gets out of a totaled car--rear end collision--and doesn't even have a sore neck, you figure the regular expensive repair cost is worth it.) When you ... Read More

My 2001 9-5 Saab Aero is currently at 80,000 miles. For the past few months, I have been experiencing a strange stutter while I drive that feels as if someone has cut off the gas then released it very quickly. I am looking at replacing our 99V70 with a new (or slightly used) wagon - either a Saab 9.5 or another Volvo. Volvo is preferred at the moment mainly because Saab has little product in my area and overpriced. I am in Canada and looking at importing the Saab from US as the MSRP is close to $8k less for new. My husband and I purchased a 2001 SAAB 9.5 new in Oct. 2001, drawn to the auto for it's safety rating. I have a 2001 9-5. I recently purchased a new air filter, but the owners' "manual" doesn't mention how to go about changing it (among other shortcomings in this "manual", but that's another story). It appears that the filter is accessed from beneath the vehicle, just in front of and inboard from the right front wheel. Is this correct? Thanks, Bob
Sounds like a bad bearing on a pulley such as the alternator.
My Saab 95 has started to make a loud high pitch whiining/buzzing noise when in park or in neutral. When shifting into gear the sound stops. any ideas of what is causing this? Thank you
Intermittent. Limp mode and then it goes away. Car drives normal but Engine/Transmission Lights stay on and shift level indicator light stays in park. If I stop the engine and restart, shift level go to any gear bu light will only go to R, D and 1. Any idea what is going on here. this problem only occurs from cold start and lights come on before the engine even starts.
We have a 2001 SE v6. In the city we get around 21 to 22 mpg--varies based on running air conditioner. On the highway we get 30+ mpg.
And if you mix in Consumer Reports you'll likely get a third opinion to further confuse you!lol! My suggestion is this: go from the general to the specific....and by that I mean put more weight on future reliability for either of these individual specific cars by checking their service and warranty histories.I am presuming you are buying from a Saab dealer and if so this info should be readily available .I strongly ... Usually these vents are directed by a vacuum control or "servo" device that opens and closes various vents and conduits depending on what temp you select. So if you have heat everywhere but one vent, AND that vent is blowing cold (that is, the vent hose underneath isn't disconnected), chances are you have a vacuum leak to a servo or a jammed servo that directs warm air to that particular vent. ... Well this was also my biggest beef with Saab - right from delivery of mine in 2001 I went through this with them after day 3. Not the same problem and not as serious but just as p*d off. Saab's are definitely unique compared with other cars, and have a lot of features for the money. However long term reliability has been a problem. Saab still makes great cars. I have had six of them, have four 9-5's right now: 2-1999; 1-2001; 1-2002. They are great cars, I love them. There is only one problem: GM. They are up to their old tricks when it comes to warranty and any customer service. Once a customer buys a Saab or any GM car, they become a legal liability in GM's eyes, and are treated as such. ... I think 2001s would be more in the $12k range now. My 2002 with 35k miles on it was only worth $12-15k retail a few months ago - dealer said wholesale was around $9k.
Somewhere between $14K to 17K. The SE V-6 has a heavier motor and requires a little more brake maintenance than its I-4 sister. It seems that there are more SE V-6's on the market than the I-4's.

Go for the 4 - it's the traditional Saab engine and seems to be the most bulletproof. Get the 2002 - upgraded suspension over the 2001 and prior models. Look for premium sound - much better sound IMHO. Saab has also been decontenting the 9-5 in little ways. No stainless steel exhaust in 2002, for example. Good luck! Donn

Here is my background- I have always driven Japanese cars. I usually buy them two years old with some mileage and drive them for about 5 or 6 years at 20,000 per year. My last car was a Nissan Maxima with 130,000 miles and not one problem until it was stolen last week. I looked at another used Maxima but decided it was time for a change. I was considering a ... From what I have read and in conversations with techs, the newer 2001-2-3 Saabs are pretty darn reliable. We have a 2003 and it is perfect. If You are going used get as new as you can.
I too own a 2001 SE Wagon. Just bought it, while parking in the garage, I smelled the sulfur also. Went to the dealer, they checked it out, said the cataylytic converter needed to be replaced. Only has 22k miles on the car. Hmmm...I'm not getting that warm fuzzy Saab feeling people are writing about. I want to feel good about this purchase, but needing to replace a large ticket item ... Hi everyone - It has been a while since I've been on this website (edmunds), and this is my first posting in the saab board. I went through about 100 previous posts, and I'm wondering if any of you would comment on whether I got a good deal or not... I bought a new 2001 Saab 9-5 (equivalent to today's linear) with all the options (heated and cooled front seats, HK ... Read More
OK just to help people out with another price for reference, I paid $31000 for a loaded 2001 SE wagon. This was in August 2002 and it had 5k miles on it but sold as new because it had never been titled. I think it was a company car. I thought it was a great deal at the time but after reading other posts it seems more like a fair deal ... Read More

hi, While looking for a used 9-5, in my search for a car, I found a 2001 9-5 aero wagon with only 21,000kms on it. "Hmmm," I thought,"this could be intersting." I called the man and he said it was in excellent condition and a real good deal. I asked if it had ever been in an accident and he said no, but...it had been vandalized. They broke in the windows, ... Read More
A few comments - the remaining 2002 Linears are getting good discounts here in Calgary. I have seen 5 sedans offered in Saturdays paper for $37k ($23k US) and 1 wagon for $40k ($25k US). All new with I think 2.8% lease. This is a steal IMHO! If I didn't already have one I would now. I don't think you will find a similarily equipped BMW that can touch this. Even ... Read More
Have a 2001 with 35K, 4 Dr. 9.5 SE. Yes, Saab has certified plan, same as BMW with 6 yr. and 75 (or 100) from in service date. Changed it effective 2002 models to match BMW, Audi and Merc., V-6 engine is very reliable, have not heard of any problems except noisy power steering gear. I have an opportunity to buy a '99 9-5 wagon. The car has 58000 miles, but a new (7,500 miles) engine was just put in it that (supposedly) came from a wrecked Vail, CO police car. The work was done by a Saab dealer, but for a broker, so they won't certify it. I'm not so worried about the engine & warranty as the fact that the battery was replaced in ... Read More
notwithstanding some small electrical problems a slight oil leak which I accept as teething problems ,and a handsfree phone saab harness that no one seems to know what to do with(dealer included) in my area now that it is installed!,I am extremely satisfied with my 2001 9-5 linear wagon after 25000kms. Aside that is from an absolutely awful drivers seat that has become impossible to feel comfortable in in 105kms to ... Read More
