There is a sensor directly under the thermostat housing. If the clip breaks and the thermo housing slides the plug out the slightest bit, the car WILL NOT turn over. Reach down, pull the thermostat housing up, and push the plug as far back as you can. If it does no snap into place you can remove the battery and the air box from the throttle body and get a long ... Read More

Have you tried to see if the starter gets voltage when you attempt to crank? I would assume not, since a new starter did not fix the problem. I know that you have to press the brake pedal to close a relay to get voltage to the starter, AND the shifter has to be in P or N. since no voltage gets to the starter, I would check on those circuits ... • I was the old timer who griped...

    Written by: burnsmr4 on Jun 12, 2003 1:31:05 PM

I still check in here every few weeks. I barely ever visit Edmunds.com, though, because my '02 Subaru Forester S has been so reliable. You know the old saying -- never hear anything from anyone until there's something to complain about. I was glad to get rid of my '99 Cougar V-6 back in 2002. It was nothing but headaches for me. I think I got one that the janitorial staff ... Read More

I'm still here, and driving my beautiful '99, even though it has cost me about $900 this year for two problems that should not have happened within the 37K miles that I've driven it. Today's NY Times "Escapes" section has an article about Pontiac Aztek (UGGGGLYYYYY) owners who have similar complaints. The following is an excerpt: "Should the calamity come to pass, Aztek owners will at least find themselves in good ... Read More

Lmigliore: Based on my experiences with my Cougar I'm going to have to disagree with your comments. My revs instantly drop when I'm stopped at a light and the radio is awesome! Everything appears to well put together and extremely well aligned on all the body parts and interior pieces. Actually this appears so far to be the highest quality car I have ever owned. I'm still very happy with my 1999 New Edge Cougar. I drive it every day and aside from a couple of early-on concerns, I've experience none of the supposed horror stories implied by the printed reliability articles. Clearly, due to Mercury's total lack of Cougar advertising, and therefore trashing of my future resale value, I am very displeased with Ford Motor Company and will quite probably never again purchase one of ... • Ex-Cougar owner weds Christmas Pickle Chick; Subaru vandalized

Atlanta, GA - In startling news today, ex-Cougar owner burnsmr4 was married to the infamous "Christmas Pickle Chick" in Winston-Salem, NC over the St. Patrick's Day weekend. burnsmr4 was spotted at a local country club dancing with and singing to his new bride, the "Christmas Pickle Chick." The bride was given her knickname after she left two big jars of "Christmas pickles" in burnsmr4's then beloved 1999 Mercury Cougar V-6. The ... Read More

Welcome abourd Aussy. Glad to hear of your purchase and that you haven't had any problems. I haven't had any problems with my 2001 C2, so I'm assuming most of the problems are just related to the first 2 years of the Cougar and that Mercury worked out the kinks by the time my 2001 and you 2002 were produced. Folks, It has been a pleasure getting to know some of you during my '99 Mercury Cougar V-6 ownership. Alas, I found a buyer for my car this week. Tonight, my Cougar is in the hands of a GA teen heading off to a college. Definitely a better freshman ride than the hick-ass, late-model, two-tone Ford Ranger which accompanied me to the halls of higher education. I completed a deal on ... Read More

I personally think the sport seats are better than the regular seats. In my opinion they are much better bolstered(ie: hold you in the seat on hard fast turns better) and I also like the having the adjustable headrest. I would get the power lumbar support if you intend to drive long distances in your Cougar. I have it on my 2001 and it really helps out on long drives. I've ... Read More

Just read the review of Edmund's 2001-2002 Sport Coupe Comparison Test. When I clicked on last place I knew the Cougar would be last (even though I secretly hoped it would be higher) One of the worst things about the article is that I have been looking for a review on the Cougar to see how it compared to the latest comptetion. So goeth the way of the Cougar ... Rattles, squeaks, hums, moans, creaks, clunks and yawns. These are the things that were on the minds of Cougar owners since day one. I remember way back, in 1998 when this whole CSG thing started, about a dozen people with the first delivery of cars were mentioning various first-year-glitches that we hoped would be fixed under warranty and fixed in the QC during ... It is odd that they would have removed ABS as a standard feature on the V6's. I recently read an article about the new 2001-2002 which mentioned something about ABS not being standard. In 1998 when I bought my 1999 Cougar, ABS was standard with the V6 because of the added weight and HP. I got the Manual Transmission because I love to "row my own" and I also got the ... Read More
