The factory tires for 2002 and 2003 Protege5 were terrible in the wet. I am running a summer set that is forgiving in the wet, and a winter set on separate wheels. I put the car with original tires in a snowdrift up to my windows on all sides, after spinning out on a curbless street and coming to rest by the side of the road, perpendicular to the road. I ... So disappointed. Just been told that our 2002 Mazda Protege 5, bought new by us in Sept 2001, 98000 km, has rust in the strut towers. Would cost about $1200 to repair. Not even able to be safetied! Mazda did drop the ball, big time, on this whole fiasco. I agree rust was a real problem in Mazda vehicles like my 2002 Protege5. Gerdie, I chose Kumho's a while back because of price & ratings, vs OEM Dunlops. IMO, price was the only advantage. Dunlops were better in snow. Dry cornering w/ Dunlops is much more responsive. Look for a vacuum leak. Any leak downstream from the MAF sensor will screw up the air/fuel ratio. It will affect idle the most. Look at the accordian pipe between the air cleaner and the intake manifold. Sometimes they develop cracks.
I'm experiencing idle surges on cold starts I wonder if this may also be related to the car's emission control systems (e.g. EGR or PCV valves). Too bad the shop did not spot this while they had the car.
Okay, I still have the exhaust smell. Also, I'm experiencing idle surges on cold starts. The RPMS will jump from 1000 to 2000 back down to 500. Now what is going on? I'm suspecting the Idle Air Control valve may be faulty, but I don't know. I'm going to take the car back to the dealer. Has anyone else experience this issue?
Thanks for all of the info. I agree, the P5 is better than the Mazda3; better cornering, better looks, better sound system. Agile cornering is better than anything I've ever driven, including recently a Chrysler Crossfire (Mercedes suspension). I still prefer the cornering characteristics of the Dunlops over the Kuhmo's. Outside of some rear door rust (WI winters), and swarbar links, My 03 P5 still seems fine at 130K miles. Good ... Read More

Have you checked your exhaust piping leading up to the muffler? If there is a crack or rusting I would think gas may be escaping. I have looked around Edmunds and townhall for awhile and finally decided to join (and asking for help :D) I am looking for a RELIABLE (that's really the most important factor i'm looking at) small sedan/coupe/hatchback/wagon. and it comes down to Civic, Corolla, Sentra and Protege. And surely civic and corolla seem to be more expensive than other two. but i can live with a little uncomfortable seat and ... Read More
I'm on the other side of town, in Midlothian -- but right now I'm halfway to your place, working in the Suntrust building downtown. I've owned two 1992 Protege LX's and a 2000 Protege ES in my past; now I'm driving a 2005 Mazda3S wagon. My wife drives a 2002 Protege5. So you might call us Mazda fanatics. :) Meade
Two weeks left to the warranty on my 2002 P5 and I am happy to report no problems in three years. A testament to driving pleasure is the increased mileage on my P5 compared to my previous vehicle, a Toyota. I believe this reveals Mazda's strong suit: they build eminently driveable machines. Moreover, the Proteges (both sedans and wagons) are not only enjoyable but also reliable. I scanned the P5 forum ... Read More
I own a 2002 Mazda Protege 2.0L with automatic transmission, only 5,000 miles on it so far. I am easy on the gas, drive a mixture of city and country, but more often city. Under exactly the same driving conditions, I always averaged about 25 mpg in my previous four Chevrolet Cavaliers (each 4 cyl with AT). My Protege is averaging only 20 mpg (and the fuel mileage seems to be ... Read More
Just out of curiosity, how can they know the timing is OK if the engine won't turn over? I think that right there is reason enough to have the car towed to a REPUTABLE mechanic. I own a 2000 Protege ES. The car had a recall for its ignition coil back in 2002. Mine was replaced free of charge under the recall campaign. If you call your Mazda dealer and give ... Read More
Hi everyone. Spring is just around the corner and the call of the "test drive" is not far behind. Let's go out and compare our P5 against the latest crop of offerings and post our comments here and answer the question: What it would take to push you over the edge to move away from the great P5? After testing the Mazda3 GT hatch automatic in January I would not be ... Read More
i have a 2002 mazda protege 5 with 91000km. just had the tranny rebuilt due to shifter fork malfunctioning(covered under warrenty) and since have experienced a rotten egg smell, alone with when sitting in idle the engine idles starting at 700rpm(proper) but than drops to approx 500rpm and comes close to stall. any ideas?
No brainer. I'd owned two 1992 LXs, one of which saved my life in a hydroplaning accident. And both (the first one up until its demise at 28,000 miles, and the second until I traded it at 83,000 miles) were completely and totally trouble-free. My current Protege, a 2000 ES 5-speed, just crossed 85,000 miles this morning. My wife drives a 2002 Protege5 with just over 40,000 miles on it. Mazda ... Read More
Lee ... I noticed from your profile that you live in Richmond. I do too. I drive a 2000 Protege ES and my wife drives a 2002 Protege5, both of which we bought from Whitten Mazda over on Midlothian Turnpike. I've been a very satisfied Whitten customer since 1991 and have owned two 1992 Proteges and a B2300 pickup from that dealership too. We should hook up! Meade
