Replying to: windjammer (May 18, 2010 2:28 pm) For the first twenty five years or so they produced mostly junk, ... Got to disagree on this... Early on, OK bad cars, but by the late 90's these were decent cars. My mother in law had a 2001 Sonata. Great car with no issues. In 2001, I bought my kids a used 2000 Sonata GLS 4Cyl. with about 14K miles on the ... Read More
Those Equus pix are sweet! I currently have a 2011 Sonata Limited on the way. It will probably arrive while I am in Seoul next week. It amazes me how far Hyundai has come in the last 10 years or so. My work has me traveling to Asia 2x a year to meet with our Vendors. (Including Samsung, LG etc..) I have been traveling to Korea since 1991. When I would ... Read More

1) Honda Accord EX and Up: I just find the design to be very very attractive...almost stately looking. In pics it looks disjointed but in person the Accord IMO as a presence that can't be matched in this class. I Love the front end treatment. Taillights could use some touching up (LEDs) but otherwise I think its the best. 2) Tie: Chevrolet Malibu 2LT and LTZ and Saturn Aura XR4 and ... Read More
hi guys, i just bought a elantra GLS 2 days ago here in Gurnee, Illinois. i've posted this message in elantra board and didn't really get any response yet. so here i go again. i bought the car from only local dealer here in gurnee, illinois. i think i got screwed big time. i haven't been this board for awhile, and i didn't know people are buying GLS for under 15k. ... I don't think so. The only similarity seems to be sharper inside corners of the headlamps, and that is a contemporary design element seen in a boat load of cars. Is it really that different from, say, what you see in TL, TSX, Civic, or several Japanese Hondas? In fact, it isn't too different from 1990-1993 Accord's headlamp with a contemporary touch. But here is the other Honda (Japanese) from which ... Read More
I compared 1998 Accord's I-4 to 2002 (I think) Sonata's V6. And the I-4 was easily the all around winner. The newer V6 in Sonata is better but the drive train isn't up to Honda's standards. Besides, Honda's new I-4 is far more powerful than the old one in my 1998. More fuel efficient too. I think V6 engines are mostly a waste. While driving my TL around with virtually no ... Read More
Speaking of inline engine, do you think that back in the early 1990s, honda should have used their 5cyl technology in the accord instead of that old v6? The hp numbers were about the same (5 had more) but the mpgs were the biggest difference. If not that, honda should make a small v8 as in 3.9-5.0 liters. Its time IMO its time for honda to move on from that 3.5 ... Read More
Gee, that seems to rational, no doesn't it Loren? Here is a completely different perspective (my own) from a 2006 Accord owner. I have a feeling my demographic isn't the norm here, so I'll tell you...I'm a college sophomore, turning 19 in August, and am a Broadcast Journalism major (news-anchor degree, lol). As you could probably guess, I, at age 18, could not afford a brand new car on my own, ... Read More
Hi My name is Eric and on Friday I bought an LX fully loaded. I bought Dark Cinnamon and it is a gorgeous color. I haven't had any suspension noises or creaking noises but since I always have the CD player blasting I can't hear them if they are there :D I have owned an '84 Plymouth Turismo a 1990 Plymouth Sundance which wasn't bad,a 1994 Eagle Talon, a 1996 Galant ... Hey Joe, Which planet Earth do you live on? Not selling them, that's an absolute lie . . . And, Daewoo engines, not quite sir. I think you're thinking of another Korean brand that supplies cars for GM. Remember the Pontiac LeMans, circa 1990? That was also a Daewoo. Hyundais have never used Daewoo engines. Unfortunately, your posts no longer have any credibility, as you do nothing but bash Hyundai - ... Read More
Their cars back then was somewhat built by a backyard manufacturer who uses hammer and metal scissor to build body parts. Suspension, exterior body, interior are so horribly done you wouldnt waste you money on, thats Hyundai I disagree with these comments and have 5 ownership experiences with Hyundai (4 with a Sonata and 1 Elantra wagon) to dispute, no doubt, a non-ownership experience: 1990 Sonata: Drove it 150,000 km. As a long time fan of Toyota (I now drive a Lex) I am impressed and delighted to see the improvements brought about by Hyundai. While Toyotas and Hondas are possibly still a bit better on the average than the better domestics and Hyundais, the absolute differences are much smaller than they used to be. But the price gap seems substantial. In that sense, Toyota is not the bargain it was ... Read More
The mid-size segment is the most important (sedan) segment for manufacturers. Listen, as much as we are subjective about the exterior and interiors of these manufacturers, the manufacturers who truly want to and have the potential to dominate, and there are only a few...Chev, Ford, Honda, Nissan and now Hyundai....all of them use the Camry as the benchmark. Sure, Mazda is a great car but they know they aren't going to ... Read More
The first Hyundai models to possess this adaptive tranny's were in mid 1990's Sonatas. My 1995 had it and it was called 'Fuzzy Logic'. It was supposed different drivers accleration points to conserve fuel. I'm not sure it wasn't just a marketing ploy back then cuz it never could figure out my wifes style. She confuses everyone with her driving!
Actually, it is the late model Honda's that are on the most stolen list. Honda's are most likely stolen because their parts are needed in the tuner market. 1. 1995 Honda Civic 2. 1989 Toyota Camry 3. 1991 Honda Accord 4. 1994 Dodge Caravan 5. 1994 Chevrolet C/K pickup 6. 1997 Ford F-150 7. 2003 Dodge Ram 8. 1990 Acura Integra 9. 1988 Toyota pickup 10. 1991 Nissan Sentra I doubt ... I'm a very conservative person, and this mantra impacts my automobile purchases. What have I owned over the last twenty years? A 1985 SAAB 900 (still own), a 1990 Honda Civic (sold), and a 1994 Dodge Grand Caravan ES (still own). That's it for the last twenty years, excluding my kids' cars! Conservative, and Scotch, plus I always pay cash, hence I never have a car payment. I buy them the ... Read More
My first Hyundai we tested? Feb 1990. Excel, in Virginia Beach. It did everything But Excel! It felt like driving an old school truck w/o power assisted steering. We thought of Hyundai when they first came out, because we thought they would be akin to the better(minus Isuzu, for the time) Japanese cars. They have come a long way. We paid 14,999 for the GLS V6 2004 Sonata: at this price, ... Read More
Hyundai replaced the Excel in the mid 1990's with a much improved, solid and reliable Accent. You are talking about a period of over 10 years ago. By the way, it is not even fair to talk about Hyundai's Sonata and bring up the Excel. It is just not the same company!
Part of it is making sure they don't have buyer's remorse. If you bought a car and then found out you had bought a real badly designed car, you would be upset. Many peopel toute their car to reassure themselves that they made the right choice. It is said that most of a car dealers advertising is to clam down the person who has already bought the car. I'm not saying Hyundai doesn't make quality cars, they do but it might take a while before they are up where Honda and Toyota are. This is right - Honda and Toyota have been making extremely high quality automobiles for 30 years. I understand that Hyundai has made great strides in quality, and their excellent warranty is a good way of demonstrating their confidence in their quality. However, as the former ... Read More
I am not an Accord or Camry fan i just feel the Accord is better then the new Sonata. I have owned a Accord in the past (1990) and tried Toyota, Chevrolet and Volkswagon from 1990 to my present car 05 EX V6. I am a very open minded, and i do like the new Sonata. What i meant by #1 competitor is #1 competiton. The Camry is a better seller ... Read More
Fine. Toyota definitely copied the taillights from the Tiburon and used them on them intentionally on the tC. Pontiac's G6 taillights are also remarkably similar in shape and position, so Pontiac also had the Tiburon in mind. Kudos to Hyundai, for providing so many other automakers with fine designs to be sampled. Pzev, "You also seem to be saying copying styling cues is purely based on sales numbers, and if a ... What? I have a 1999 GLS V6 with automatic. No Problems with any tranny and I am about 190 miles from hitting 80,000 miles, and the car is not even 3 years old, yet. After ordering a Sonata LX with Option 6 on June 8, I finally got it on Aug 3. 8 weeks for a Sonata! Wow, it goes to show you that Hyundai demand is greater than what they are supplying. It's true you never know for sure about ANY vehicle, even if you are diligent in reading, testing, inspecting, etc. Within one week of leasing a new 1997 Dodge Dakota Club Cab SLT+, the steering failed.
