On the passenger side under dash board is a relay switch or something like a relay switch push in on the top of it I think it is green on top and it will start.Mine does that all the time and this is my fix..
First wild guesses on each: -Failing/weak fuel pump. It's inside the fuel tank. A gauge can be attached to the fuel line under the hood to check the pressure. Low pressure means a weak pump. -Belt slipping. There are multiple other things that could cause each problem.
Sometimes when I start my ranger the rpms wont get up to where they should be and then my truck sputters and stalls out... i have to keep revving the engine to try to keep it going and i have no idea why...if anyone knows what could be wrong and could help that would be great....also when i drive there is some squealing noise that idk what that is either
I have a 2005 Ford Ranger with a 2.5L 2wd manual. It will start after sitting over night. Then I will drive for awhile thne it will act like it is not getting any fuel to it. It has over half a tank i dont know if it has a bad relay or a bad fuel pump. i dont know how to tell either way when it quit the last time ... Read More
I came across a thread earlier today stating the same symptoms I have with my engine. It involves replacing the o-ring on the IMT valve. However, I simply cannot find a picture or a good enough description to show me where the IMT valve is. It is a 2005 Ford Ranger 3.0L v6. Can anyone post a pic with an arrow for me or describe it for me? Also I noticed ... Read More
You might replace the coil pack. I had a similar problem with my '04 ranger, and after a huge run-around with the dealer and my mechanic playing with fuel pumps/relays/fuses, the mechanic called a friend who told him to replace the coil pack (70 dollars) and ... voila - good as new. (1500 other dollars and two fuel pumps later though) (blarggh)
having same problem with 2004 ranger, did you get yours fixed? what was your solution? thanks
According to a Ford "Engineer" that looked at my truck, I need a new Power Train Control Module. Everything else was thoroughly checked and tested. A mere $688.00 and a week for the part will get me back on the road. Anyway, consider this before you replace everything like injectors, plugs, coil packs, cat convertors, etc. I can't believe the money I've spent and still didn't get my problem fixed. I ... Read More
Here's the latest. They had one of their "engineers" figure out that since everything else was good ie., compression, spark, air flow, mixture, etc. that I had a faulty Power Train Control Module that will only be $688.00, and it will take a week to get the part. I'm like you though, this will be my last Ford. Don't start spending money like I did to start; which, looking back, was ... Read More
Yeah thanks for the info.....My next step was to replace the coil pack then the injectors. Funny thing though, I bought my truck with 7 miles on it new. It actually did it the first time within the first 25k miles. I just pulled the battery for 5 min and it went away for about a year. Did the same thing the 2nd time it happened and it disappeared again. However ... Read More
Well, I've finally found someone else with the same problems. I have an 06 Ranger STX 3.0. I have changed everything form plugs, wires, coil packs, catylitic converter, and fuel filters. Had the valves replaced TWO times, heads re-worked TWO Times. I am so frustrated I am beside myself. My local Ford Dealer charged me 1200.00 the first time around, warrantied it the second time, and in the morning I am ... Read More
I own a 2005 Ranger. I brought it new in Feb of 2005. Three times it has stalled on me. The first time it was after I had parked it nose down on a hill, it started, but died soon after. Then an hour later it started up and no problems...at least not until a week later. At that time it did it after coming out of a parking garage. This ... Read More
I will be driving my 05 ford ranger 4x4 level 2 and the motor will stop and then restart immediately without any fault showing up. I had it checked at the ford garage and they said four of the six cylinders were dropping out and the engine control module needed to be replaced. After replacing the module the truck continues to have the same problem.
I've not read about Rangers having this problem, but for other autos, these symptoms can be caused by faulty Crank Position Sensor/s. When this sensor fails, it totally shuts the car down. Very dangerous if you are traveling at high speed. In GM cars (Cadillac) they act exactly as you said, and they also do NOT set a check engine failure code many times. So, 'pulling the codes' will not even ... Read More
Hey, I have a 2005 FOrd Ranger--driving down the highway the engine just quit for no apparent reason--after a few minutes of just hanging out it restarted and on my way I went. On the way back home it quit again--this time no restart. The engine spins but wont start as if no fuel or no spark. GOt the truck home and it started right up. Next day I changed the ... Read More
Can anyone explain to me whythe official EPA mpg on the Ford Ranger 3.0 and 4.0 liter engines has varied so much in the past seven years? I am interested in purchasing a used Ranger in this range of years. I would prefer a 4WD 4.0 liter with manual transmission. Since 2001, this engine has been OHC and 207 hp. When I look at the pre-2008 EPA window sticker figures, the ... Read More
Hey, I bought my ranger in 2005 with it being an 02 model and I have a question about the engine. well, I've noticed at the beginning of the year that it's not getting the right amount of mileage that it should be. I think it's suppose to be getting around 300 to the tank, but now it's more like 230 at max. Also, since it's been making clanking noises when ... Read More
I recieved my ranger in 2005 with it being an 02 model only having 18,000 on it. Excellent condition. Well, when i would hit the brakes, the steering wheel would shake. So, about a year and a half ago i bought new roders. Now it's shaking all over again. I don't know if maybe it's the calipers or something. I still have warrenty on it (extended service plan). ---also the brake ... Read More
I came across this searching online for information on the next gen Ranger. http://www.autoblog.com/2005/11/25/update-world-premiere-ford-4-trac-concept-tru- ck/ I like it. Anyone have any updates(what, when, etc)?
hey all if anyone out there has a 99 ranger with the 4cyl 2.5L 5sp manual i have a bit of advice that i finally used myself...go buy a new truck! i just recently bought a 2005 nissan frontier and it is a big step up! thats not to say you should go buy one, but definately buy a newer ranger, like 05 or 06, or something different. 99 seemed to ... I looked at new Rangers from about 2000 thru 2005 and never replaced my 1994 4L Ext Cab STX because the new ones were not much different from my 94. And some of the things about my 94 were better. They have really screwed up how the bucket seats move forward and then will not 'remember' their previous setting. My 94 would do that, the 'tilt' was lost but the distance ... Read More
I have a 2005 Ford Ranger and to tell you the truth the only difference between the 2005 and 2006 Ford Rangers is the front grille and the fender flares. Everything else is the same. To give you another perspective I have a friend that has a 1996 Ford Ranger he replaced the front grille, rims, tires, and put a lift kit on it. The truck looks exactly like mine. How ... Read More
I searched through the previous discussions but was unable to find an answer to my problem. So if my problem has already been answered, please repost for me.... I purchased a 2001 Ranger 4 cyl. with manual transmission that had only 35K miles on it. Seemed to be in great condition. I purchased this vehicle in April of 2005. Last summer (May through September), the engine will intermittently go into a ... Read More
... Bottom line: Do some test driving before you buy, but prepare to spend as much as $10,000 more for the Tacoma compared to an equally equipped Ranger ... Just got done comparing prices for base Tacomas and Rangers and the price is about the same, even after rebates (before rebates the Ranger actually costs a bit more; haven't compared loaded models). I'm a Toyota truck owner looking to get a ... Read More

Hi guys and gals. Question: 2005 Ford Ranger-2.3L engine-Timing belt or timing chain?
Just purchased a 2005 Ranger XLT 4.0 extended cab with auto and air-cond for $16,900. MSRP was $23,600. After all the rebates and dealer discounts, I think I got a deal. Great sales staff and service at Kenny Ross Ford.
What color is the Accessory WireIn the audio system on my 2005 Ford Ranger...I'm putting in a system and can't get any help...anyone here know?
I absolutely recommend the Ranger. My 96 4.0 V6 automatic extended cab flareside bed is the BEST vehicle I have ever owned. It only has 84,000 miles on it, but I am not kidding when I say it has NEVER broken. Nothing. Zero. Zip. I sold my 89 Toyota truck to buy it and I have loved it everyday. The Toyota was alright, but at 100,000 miles it was stalling regularly ... Read More
I recently read a post here about drive testing 5 similar trucks, and decided to do my own tests due to the fact that test drives I performed last year netter much different results. Here were my findings, test driving all 2005 models, same list as above (also drove Mazda, but since it is roughly same as Ford leaving it out). Chevy Colorado Dodge Dakota Ford Ranger Toyota Tacoma Nissan Frontier ... Read More
As part of a "new truck survey", I had the opportunity to drive five new 2005 small trucks: Chevy Colorado Ford Ranger Dodge Dakota Toyota Tacoma Nissan Frontier All were extra-cabs, and the Dodge, Toytota & Nissan were totally new trucks for 2005. The Dodge, Chevy and Ranger were big disappointments. Dodge could have done a much better job since the truck was a new design. The Chevy just felt totally ... Read More
The Mazda B series board is even quieter, so I have to come to this one. I know my B series is basically a Ranger, but my personal preference was that I liked the styling tweaks that Mazda made. My Mazda has been a great truck, with my only complaints being some minor interior fit and finish issues, a slightly jumpy transmission, and noisy brake rotors. I've had my pads changed ... Read More
Being my first new vehicle purchase at age 25, I got my 2003 Ranger Edge 3.0l reg cab. I had to get a v6, but couldn't find a 4.0l in a regular cab (fleet order only). Combine that with a manual transmission and it's not slow, but it's not gonna beat up a mustang. I put the Gibson Cat-back on it, but it is stainless steel, so it'll last a good ... Read More
but this year I wouldn't be surprised if Taco hit #2 in compact sales the way S10 is selling. It might actually be #2 already if you use September data and do some math. Of course, it's speculatory, but given the sales volume this year, highly likely. The new Ranger may have a V8, but lets see.....it was first supposed to come out in 2003? Then 2004? Now it is pushed ... Read More
