I would say the hardiest part was trying to pry off the tailgate cover, without braking or damaging any of the plastic fasteners. Once off, it was pretty easy from there. Is it low on fluid again? If not, there may be bad seals internally on the transmission, which is causing the pressure to seep out and preventing normal operation. this would require a rebuild. If the fluid is burnt (brown in color), it needs to be replaced and is not likely providing the protection or the hydraulic characteristics the unit needs. Sorry, I don't know specifically what the fan behavior is in the Caravans. But in all my other cars, one fan runs if the a/c is not being used, both run when you turn the a/c on, and when the coolant temperature sensor hits a certain threshold the radiator fan speeds up while the other fan remains constant. Let us know what you find out if you get a chance.

I have told my wife just to go ahead and have someone put in a new thermostat for her since that is relatively cheap. It sounds a lot like the other radiatior was blocked inside and that the system was not blown out properly. The debris could have circulated out of the old radiator and then be causing intermittent blockages in the new one. But if they did a good job flushing out the system before the replacement then this should not be the case. Considering it still heats up on the highway, I guess ... Read More

The radiator was recently replaced due to a crack in it, but some similar problems/symptoms are occuring. Regarding handling in snow - I have had several 4 wheel drive cars (Subarus, Jeeps, Toyotas) as well as 2 Dodge Caravans (1998, 2005) and have strong opinions regarding snow and snow tires. I believe my Caravans with 4 first quality winter tires (I've used Blizzaks on the 1998, and Michelin x-Ice on the new Grand Caravan) are BETTER all around in snow than a 4 wheel drive vehicle on 4 ... I just bought a 1998 Dodge Grand Caravan with 113,000 miles on it. The transmission was replaced at 103,000 miles. It runs and sounds fine but just before you come to a complete stop (at 5-6 mph) it makes a clunking noise and kind of jerks forward. You can sometimes aviod the problem by slowing way down before a stop and sort of coasting forward. Could this be a transmission problem? ... Read More

I've been tracking the DC mini-van transmission issues (the Dextron fiasco and otherwise) for a number of years now, and one thing I've noticed is that, unless I'm missing something, the problems seem to be more concentrated with the mini-vans equipped with the smaller engines. To the best of my knowledge, I only remember one or maybe two reports of 3.8 liter vans having a problem. With that in mind, and ... Read More

I would be concerned as to why it has such low mileage. You might want to ask some questions about that. I believe the mileage for a 1998 should be anywhere from 65,000 to 73,000 miles. I highly recommend the Consumer Reports Used Car book. It has a lot of information, a check list and questions to ask regarding a used vechicle. I used this when purchasing our 2001 GC. It ... We have an appraisal tool linked off the Used Car pages that you can use for a second opinion. The same page has links to Buying Tips that are worth a scan too. Running a Carfax may be worth it, but it sounds pretty cherry with those miles. And having a mechanic look it over should expose any obvious major problems. Steve, Host

Price seems fair according to Kelly Blue book, but after reading all the messages, I am scared to buy it. What should I know before buying this van? Thank you.
