Re: 1997 buick 3.8 LeSabre EGR tube, Intake or heads [curacao_mac]
Written by: imidazol97 on Sep 15, 2011 5:05:46 PM
Head gaskets very rarely fail unless the car has been overheated. The upper intake does fail with leaks where the EGR gas goes through the plastic upper to be mixed with the incoming air. The plastic deteriorates into granules and seeping begins losing coolant from the passages that go through the upper intake manifold (UIM) to the throttle body. The lower gaskets between the metal lower and the cylinder heads also ... Read More

1997 buick 3.8 LeSabre EGR tube, Intake or heads
Written by: curacao_mac on Sep 15, 2011 8:10:57 AM
I have been reading on this board trying to track down a problem. I have water in the oil of a 97 buick LeSabre. In this post http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/direct/view/.f178c2c/157 imidazol97 says that it is most likely the EGR tube inside the upper intake leaking. Can anyone point me to a thread on repairing or replacing the EGR tube or does the whole upper have to be replaced? Getting parts down here is ... Read More

Most likely it's a leak through the EGR tube inside the upper intake manifold. The hot gases deteriorate the plastic and right next to that is the water going through the upper intake to the throttle body to warm it in winter. The coolant leaks into the incoming air. If you take off the throttle body and or the honey comb on the end, open the throttle plate wide and look ... Read More

Re: 94 LeSabre Front End has noise [billnmd2006]
Written by: orangeup on Sep 22, 2010 8:22:20 AM
I'm going to guess its a broken front sway bar. I broke mine last saturday on my 1997 Buick LaSabre. I heard a pop as my daughter took a left turn quite fast. After that, every time I turned left or right it had that "clunking" noise. It also produced that noise on rough parking lots and on dirt roads. At first I did not know what it was. Since I ... If you find the motor is not turning because it's hydrolocked, you need to repair the UIM by replacing and repair the LIM gaskets.

If the smoking is white smoke that may be coolant (water) being burned through the cylinders. You need to find out immediately if it is. It could be the upper intake manifold leaking coolant internally. If so, the oil must be changed because coolant in the oil is death on the bearings. If the oil has a chocolate milk look or whitish cast, that's likely to be coolant. If the motor ... Read More

Re: 1997 Buick LeSabre Engine Light Suddenly Won't Go Out [nikkiro74]
Written by: imidazol97 on Mar 7, 2009 11:30:24 AM
>It needed a new engine, Go back to where you bought it. It must have had a warranty since it was new. My thought would be a sensor or something major has happened because of the knocking. If it's a spark knock that might be sensor; otherwise, it's a problem. It needs to be diagnosed and just putting parts on hoping is going to be expensive.

Written by: nikkiro74 on Mar 7, 2009 6:14:16 AM
I have a 97 Buick LeSabre Custom that I bought a couple of months ago. It needed a new engine, and I had one installed shortly afterwards, new oil put in, the whole nine yards. It's been running fine up until a couple of days ago. Suddenly it started knocking and cutting off, the engine light won't go out, I bought new plugs and had them installed but the engine light ... Yet another cry for help with reprogramming a FOB
Written by: lesabreguy on May 31, 2005 6:01:15 PM
I just purchased a 1997 Buick LeSabre Limited with one set of keys and one FOB. Dealer gave me another set of keys and a spare FOB (same make/model as the original one). I read posting #2764 on how to reprogram the FOB's for the Buick, however when I insert the key into to ignition switch 3 times while holding the "unlock" button, I never get the 3 chimes upon releasing ... Time to "refresh" the styling
Written by: macarthur2 on Dec 6, 2003 4:06:52 PM
Bought my LeSabre in 2000, and it has been trouble free. Just want to comment that Buick really needs to do something yearly to physically set the new models apart from the older. My 2000 looks just like the 2004 and that is not the way to encourage new buyers. Look at the Century, it went to that body style in 1997 and it is still the same for 2004. Regal ... Read More

Rear Seat Belts Don't Lock & Cabin Air Filter?

Just bought a 03 Buick LeSabre Limited Celebration. When trying to install a childs car booster seat, can not get the rear seat belts to lock when I pull it out all the way. Our 97 GM mini-van rear seat belts do allow you to lock once you pull them out all the way and let it rachet to a snug shoulder position. Did GM make a change to their rear ... Read More

i have a 1997 Buick Lesabre ( http://raegoul.org/pic005.jpg ) and i find the air conditioning amazing. When you put it on it takes a few minutes til it becomes absolutely freezing and u have to turn it down. Maybe the newer LeSabre's air conditioning is less impressive... personally i find the entire 2002 style unimpressive... Buick should have never gotten rid of the beautiful door handles. 1997 LeSabre Alternator Whine
Written by: dispencer on Nov 24, 2001 2:21:41 PM
Does anyone else have a pronounced whine coming from the alternator, noticible until you shift into high? You can hear each shift, whine goes down as rpm's fall. I had a similar noise in my 1994 but less loud. The alternator seems to be working ok. Has anyone installed a new or rebuilt alternator because of this problem and has the noise gone away. I'll have this car for another 5 ... Read More

'97 LeSabre problems:Torque Converter,etc.
Written by: chandler995 on Feb 13, 2001 7:39:08 PM
I'm the original owner of a '97 LeSabre Limited purchased in June 1997 (fully loaded w/Gran Touring, etc.) Car ran fine for almost 2 years. Then, just after the 3/36k warranty expired (around 39k miles), the tranny would slip at 55-60 mph and then bottom out. Buick dealer said it needed a new valve body and/or torque converter (at least $1200). Escalated to GM Regional rep to see if they would ... Read More
