Used 2007 Volvo S40 Consumer Reviews
Stranded on I-85 when engine blew a rod!
I have about 69,050 miles on a 2007 Vovlo s-40. I have changed the oil every 30000-4000 miles, and had service checkups on regular bases. I was stranded last night on I-85 when my car threW a rod, forming two holes in the engine block. The mechanic that took my car in was blown away and said he had never seen anything like this. Nice clean oil rain out of the car and the small pieces that fell out of the motor were nice and shiny because there was no "gunk" in the motor due to the good service history. Please someone tell me if this is not a sorry car. I will never own a Volvo again, and please if you are thinking about buying a Volvo-DO NOT BUY A VOLVO, YOU WILL BE SORRY. U WILL BE STRANDED
Love hate relationship
For the record, I love my Volvo. I would love something newer like maybe a s60 but for now I will keep on driving my 2007 s40 with 184,000 mi. I purchased it when it had 131,000 from a small car lot. I didn't do my Carfax research at the time so who knows if it was properly maintained. My husband replaced lots of stuff on it when we got it back in 2018. O'Reilly's joked we were rebuilding it. It was mainly glow plugs, radiator hose, brakes, bearing, joints etc. A few years ago it had a short in battery cable that my husband just secured to the battery which seemed to fix it, it had a fuel relay issue where it kept dying out, that was the major issue that we fixed. It had some issues with the brake skid light coming on but drove fine, it eventually went over after several months. AC doesn't work, sunroof leak, some door latches not working, trunk latch is messed up so we hooked up a string to make it work, lights on control unit where ac, heat, etc don't light up at times so not sure what is on or off, seat control doesn't work, it's really just my commuter car. It's pretty clanky down the road. Bur despite all the issues, engine wise and daily use it is great. I love driving it. Maybe I should of got a different model or maybe one that was better maintained but I love my car. Thankfully my husband is pretty handy. For most things he can fix but more complicated stuff, we had to have someone else look at it. In the 7 years I have it, the fuel issue and battery cable having a short were the only major issues.

Pleasant, but disappointing
The S40 2.4i gets high marks for styling, fit and finish - very nice. The 168 horsepower 2.4 liter normally aspirated 5-cyl has plenty of pep. Fuel economy is on the low side - I averaged 23 MPG in mixed city/freeway driving. The standard suspension is tight and supple; goes right where you point it. The big disappointment is the electrical system. In the 1 1/2 yrs I owned the car I had three occasions where the car didn't recognize coded electronic key, and a series of erroneous indications of hood unlatched, lights burned out, etc. After awhile cons outweighed pros, and I lost confidence. Last week I sold it, bought a BMW 328i (who can argue?).
