The Volvo C40 is a compact, stylish EV packing a satisfying amount of performance. A quiet interior and comfortable seats, the C40 is in many ways the epitome of a modern EV. But a steep asking price, shockingly poor rearward visibility and considerably less range than its competitors will make it a tough sell for buyers not enamored with the Scandinavian design aesthetic.

Pros
- Quick acceleration and enjoyable handling
- Quiet cabin
- Stylish look inside and out
Cons
- Poor rearward visibility
- Subpar range and electrical efficiency
- Small cargo area
What's new
- Supporting Core and Plus trims debut
- Part of the first C40 generation introduced for 2022
Logically, the 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge would seem to be the inferior choice to the XC40 Recharge that it's based on. Both are small all-electric SUVs, but the C40 has a coupe-style roofline that reduces both passenger headroom and cargo capacity. (Plus, the XC40 isn't particularly roomy to begin with.) But on the upside, the C40 Recharge has one of the sportier looks around in its class, and that alone might make it worth a look.

Whether you opt for the C40 or the XC40, you'll get a thoughtfully designed all-electric SUV with a unique Scandinavian aesthetic, Volvo's commitment to safety tech, and high levels of comfort. With up to 226 miles of estimated range, the C40 won't be able to cruise as far as some other EVs in its class, but its range should be more than enough for most drivers. We also ran the C40 Recharge on Edmunds' real-world range test and observed a more complimentary 252 miles on a single charge.
For 2023, the C40 lineup expands to include the supporting Core and Plus trims. In its inaugural year, it was only available in the top Ultimate trim. These more affordable models should broaden the C40's appeal against other subcompact electric SUVs, which include the Tesla Model Y and the new Lexus RZ 450e. Be sure to check out our Expert Rating below to see how the 2023 Volvo C40's advantages and drawbacks stack up against its rivals.

Performance
8.0/10
How does the C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric drive? Even with its striking styling, we think it's safe to call the C40 a sleeper. Accelerating to 60 mph happens in just 4.5 seconds, quicker than Ford's Mach-E and Tesla's Model Y Long Range. And despite the Volvo having some pretty basic all-season tires, there's a reassuring degree of traction and control out of the corners that makes this little SUV pretty fun to whip around. The C40 is more than competent in everything it does.
All this speed doesn't come at the sacrifice of everyday drivability either. The XC40 Recharge is effortless to drive at any speed and features a one-pedal driving mode that dials up the motor's regenerative braking effect, allowing you to slow to a stop without having to use the brake pedal.

Comfort
8.0/10
How comfortable is the C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric? For a small SUV, the C40 is relatively comfortable. The Recharge starts up and is ready to drive the moment you open the door, and its electric motors produce very little noise. As we're not big fans of the specially designed synthesized noises many EVs emit, we're happy to discover the C40 is free from a gimmicky soundtrack.
The C40's ride leans toward more firm than comfortable, likely because of its extra weight and its bias toward sporty handling. That gives the C40 a slightly busy ride in the city but excellent body control and stability at freeway speeds. The upholstery features recycled materials, and the front seats are fairly comfortable and offer a sufficient level of adjustment. Taller drivers did take issue with the somewhat aggressively angled headrests. The rear seats provide a proper degree of support.

Interior
7.0/10
How’s the interior? Volvo's typical user interface remains, and most controls are accessed through the 9-inch vertically oriented touchscreen. The C40 uses Google's newest in-car operating system, which includes convenient apps such as Google Maps and Spotify built right into the car. Apple iPhone users can rest easy as Apple CarPlay is supported. One gripe we have is the rather limited amount of information available through the digital instrument cluster.
The C40 has a relatively roomy cabin, even if getting out of the rear seats will likely require ducking your head due to the sloping roofline. There's a little less headroom for rear passengers in the C40 than its mechanical twin, the boxier XC40 Recharge, but it's adequate and the standard panoramic roof makes the interior feel much more spacious. Unfortunately, the C40's rear visibility suffers immensely from its unique styling. In a word, it's poor. The view offered by the backup camera is also partially blocked by bodywork. Thankfully, the surround-view camera system is pretty helpful when maneuvering into tight parking spots.

Technology
8.0/10
How’s the tech? With the Google operating system onboard, there are some great and some not so great features. We love being able to access apps like Google Maps, and having the excellent Google Assistant as a voice recognition system makes it one of the easier ways to control things. We don't like that a sudden loss of the data connection will render all the Google features useless until the connection is restored.
Four USB-C ports plus two 12-volt outlets and a wireless charger ensure there are ample options for keeping devices charged up. A full suite of advanced driver aids is optional and a bit pricey, but we think it's worth the investment because all the features work quite well. The C40 Ultimate comes standard with Volvo's full suite of advanced driver aids, including Volvo's semi-automated driving technology, Pilot Assist. We were impressed with the consistency and accuracy of the systems.

Storage
7.5/10
How’s the storage? The C40's swoopy styling shrinks its cargo capacity down from the XC40 Recharge's already small 20.4 cubic feet to a mere 14.6 cubes. While there is a frunk, it is very small and best suited to holding little more than a charging cable. The cabin offers a variety of other storage spaces and it's easy to keep your personal items organized. Felt-lined doors are a nice touch and help keep items from rattling around.
Using your C40 for kid duty? The child seat anchors are clearly located under flip-up doors, but they're buried a little deep for easy access. You might have the best chance of fitting a bulky rear-facing seat in this car compared to most other SUVs this size, but it'll still be a tight fit.
The C40 can tow up to 2,000 pounds. That's the same as the Polestar 2, less than the Model Y (3,500 pounds) and more than the Mach-E, which is not rated for towing.

Range and Efficiency
7.0/10
How are the range and efficiency? The EPA estimates the C40 Recharge has a maximum range of 226 miles and uses 39 kWh of electricity for every 100 miles of driving. Those numbers make it one of the less efficient luxury SUVs despite its small size. For comparison, the Tesla Model Y Long Range only uses 28 kWh for every 100 miles you drive.
In Edmunds' real-world testing, the C40 Recharge proved more efficient. We measured 35.1 kWh used for every 100 miles of driving and a maximum range of 252 miles on a full charge. Those are similar numbers to the Volvo XC40 Recharge we tested, which traveled 240 miles and used 35.4 kWh per 100 miles in our real-world test. Even with its real-world efficiency gains, the C40 lacks the range of most of its rivals.
As far as charging goes, the C40 is relatively speedy. It should take about eight hours to charge from empty to full if you have a 240-volt power source that outputs 11 kW. On a 150-kW DC fast charger, the C40 Recharge can charge from zero to 80% battery capacity in about 35 minutes.

Value
7.5/10
Is the C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric a good value? While the C40 has some attractive qualities, we don't think it's one of the better values for an EV. It isn't any less expensive than its larger and more spacious competition — the Ford Mustang Mach-E and Tesla Model Y — and offers a lot less range than either.
Volvo's basic and powertrain warranties last for four years/50,000 miles, which aligns with the coverage of most competitors. The battery warranty is covered for eight years/100,000 miles, and Volvo covers scheduled services at every 10K miles for up to three years/36,000 miles of ownership. Roadside assistance is included for four years with no mileage limit.

Wildcard
8.5/10
You can call the C40 a Polestar-lite if you want to, but there's no taking away from the effortless and modern way theis electric Volvo goes about its daily duties. Even though it's not marketed as a performance EV, the C40's power and poise make it easy, and even a tad fun, to drive. This is a very well-sorted EV.
It's also chock full of Scandinavian design aesthetic. From the stylish wheels to the extensive use of recycled materials and contrasting interior colors, the C40 has a low-key, upscale look that many design-conscious buyers will prefer to some of the other drab or overly futuristic interiors offered in the competition.

Which C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric does Edmunds recommend?
We typically don't suggest the top model for most vehicles, but in the case of the Volvo C40, the Ultimate trim gets our recommendation. It costs thousands more than the base Core trim but adds plenty of worthwhile features such as adaptive cruise control, a premium audio system and the Climate package that is optional on lower trims.
Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric models
The 2023 Volvo C40 Recharge is an all-electric subcompact SUV with seating for five. It's available in three trim levels: Core, Plus and Ultimate. All C40s have a 78-kWh battery pack that powers two electric motors — one at each axle for all-wheel drive. Combined, they produce 402 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque. The EPA estimates it will travel 226 miles on a single charge, and in Edmunds' real-world testing we managed to go 252 miles. DC fast charging up to 150 kW is included along with 250 kW of free DC fast charging on the Electrify America network.

- 9-inch center touchscreen with Google-based operating system

- Power-folding rear headrests
Both the Plus and Core trims are eligible for the optional Climate package that adds:

4/5 stars, Great looking coupe SUV. Room for improvements.
KL,
Ultimate 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
This is a great EV! Loves: 0-60 in 4.5sec—all the power is there if you need to pass a car. Very balanced suspension leaning more on comfort. One-pedal mode is set perfect. Has all the regenerative braking needed to stop the car without needing to use the brakes. Great looks—especially the sloped rear with its deck spoiler flanked by dashed LED taillights. Large moonroof to let in … natural light. Small footprint allows for ease with parking in narrow spots. Speed limit in instrument panel. Thor hammer daytime running lights plus LED headlamps and fog lamps. Fast charge at 150kW DC and 11kW level 2. Door sensors for keyless lock/unlock at all 4 doors. Trash bin at center console. Heated rear seats with center passthrough (perfect for hockey sticks). Thigh extensions on front seats. Safety technology—great blind spot warning and rear cross traffic warning. Google voice commands. Auto-folding mirrors when car doors are locked. The stop charge button at charging port is very useful. Kia EV6 requires you to stop charging via its app before you can remove the charge cord. Stitching on the faux leather vegan seats. Trunk cover lid fits under trunk when you don’t want to use it or need it removed for taller objects. Automatic parking brakes aligned with Park selection. Disengages when you shift to reverse or drive. 250 kWh free using Electrify America. That’s like 4 free tanks of gas. Charging cables included. Hooks for grocery bags in trunk and for purse on glove compartment door. Pilot assist works great compared with simple cruise control—keeps you within your lane and maintains set distance from car in front and able to speed up or slow down as needed. Can be improved: Apple CarPlay needs to be wireless. Instrument panel bare when hooked to CarPlay and using Waze—should be able to show Waze in instrument panel. Only looks nice if using car’s GoogleMaps navigation. Center instrument needs to show ETA when using GoogleMaps so that center screen can be reserved for entertainment (music) info. Have to switch to GoogleMaps on center screen just to see your ETA. Driver profile doesn’t change if car wasn’t locked after previous driver—we don’t typically lock car in home garage so if my wife drives next, car still operates under my profile even though she is using her profile-linked key. External door handle lights to light path to car doesn’t come on with proximity. Requires you to pull out your key and hit unlock button for it to light up. My previous Infiniti had proximity sensor so that puddle lights come on when you approach the car. Needs more side bolstering front seats. Needs firming steering—firm setting adds no detectable difference. Range should appear in instrument panel instead of just percentage battery left. You have to look for range in center monitor. Odometer not shown unless you select trip info screen. Rear seat doesn’t recline. Crystal shift lever only available with wool seat option. Topographic dash panel only looks good at night when backlit. Looks like cheap plastic in daytime. Need way to turn off foot activated trunk opening or reserve only for opening. It closed and hit my wife’s head twice when loading groceries because she stands too close and inadvertently activates it. Would like a start/stop button vs seat activation. Manual control takes multiple screen touches to get to settings, controls, to turn off vehicle if want to sit while parked or if leaving dogs in car to run out and pick up something but want to keep AC running. I can’t even see how progressive rear turn signals look because if I step out to look, the car shuts off. Haven’t even been able to check out how headlights look when turned on. Poor rear view our of rear view mirror. Needs to be camera linked display for rear view mirror. Needs option to have default camera as 360 when reverse gear is selected. Have to alway manually change from rear camera to 360 each time since I prefer 360 view. Split screen for center monitor to display multiple content (eg music and navigation). Needs heads up display for a $62k car. Homelink—hard to find garage 2 button at night. Stalks on either side of steering wheel needs backlighting. Eliminate center tunnel in rear seats. Need a 12v outlet in trunk for electric cooler for tailgating. Very small glove compartment. Digital clock only in center monitor and in very small font size. Miss my ventilated seats (especially more useful than heat seater in California). More range than EPA rated of 226 miles. When charged to 80% as Volvo recommends, that’s less than 200 miles of range. Better efficiency needed since it’s a 77kWh battery but only pushing 200 miles of range. HVAC has auto setting but you still need to manually adjust fan speed. Would like a dedicated physical button for turning on/off one-pedal mode vs scrolling screen to get to it. Rid of the lower body black plastic cladding. Keep it all body color. Spare tire. Same size front and rear tires to allow for rotation of tires.
5/5 stars, C40 over Model 3
Chris J.,
Ultimate 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
Picked up my 2023 Fusion Red Ultimate w/Wool Seats on 10/1 - and so far, loving it! The Wool Seats are very comfortable and breathe nicely. I found the standard seats to be too stuffy when I test drove earlier in the year. Coming from a 2020 Tesla Model 3 Long Range, for which the lease is expiring. Strongly considered getting another Tesla, but their price increases put it right in line … with the C40. Definitely noticing less efficiency with the C40 after a week, but knew that going in. The VAST majority of my driving is local, so it's not a major impact.
For the price, the Volvo is CLEARLY superior in comfort and quality. The cabin is rock solid and MUCH quieter on local roads and the highway. The Harmon/Kardon system rocks. I find it much better with bass and clarity than the Tesla. The Tesla has always had creaks and squeaks and rattles and overall the cabin feels much cheaper with flimsy plastic molding throughout.
The C40 driving dynamics are a lot different - it's a softer ride and more body roll through corners, but it's FAST and I adjusted to the drive after a few days.
Overall - very happy with the purchase as it feels solid, quiet, and luxurious. The app is almost comical in comparison to the Tesla - I can precondition the cabin and that's it. But really, that's mostly what I used the Tesla app for.
3/5 stars, C40 Cheap plastic caught fire in car
Pop,
Ultimate 4dr Hatchback AWD (electric DD)
The car drives well but is made very cheap. The plastic cup holder/center console started to smoke and burn from a water bottle sitting in cup holder. Window was down while charging and I started smelling melting plastic and noticed the smoke and started recording. It has happened twice now but Volvo told me they can't refund me because it's due to outside influences (sun, and bottled … water they gave me at dealership). It's not the customer service or quality I expected from Volvo. The C40 is beautiful and it drives well but for 60k+ I expected a more quality product. Maybe that's my fault but I don't think a center console that isn't combustible in direct sunlight due to a plastic bottle of water. But again I'm 45 and have driven a plethora of vehicles in several states over the years and this has NEVER happened before. I guess it's not Volvo fault...must be that global warming!

Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric vs. Volvo XC40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric
Coupe-like versions of existing SUVs often sacrifice interior space for their sportier silhouette and the C40 is no different. Compared to the more conventional XC40 on which it's based, the C40 gives up about an inch-and-a-half of rear headroom as well as a chunk of cargo capacity. On top of that, the C40 costs a few hundred dollars more.
Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric vs. Tesla Model Y
At the time of this review, the Tesla Model Y Long Range costs thousands less than the C40 and has an EPA-estimated range of 330 miles on a single charge. Its range and price should entice plenty of shoppers, but Tesla's build quality, lack of smartphone integration, and stiff ride should be considered too.
Volvo C40 Recharge Twin Pure Electric vs. Lexus RZ 450e
The RZ 450e is a new electric SUV and has an EPA-estimated range of 220 miles on a single charge. It's more than 14 inches longer than the C40 and, as a result, provides more cargo and rear passenger space, but the Lexus also costs about more than the Volvo. The RZ's lack of personal storage and one-pedal driving add to its shortcomings compared to the C40.
