We have had our 2016 Tiguan for a month. Prior to that a trouble free 2012 Passat. Overall the reviews are dead on. For us, cargo room doesn't factor into the selection but interior passenger room, comfort and features factor in greatly. The Tiguan will not disappoint in that area. Performance is more than adequate ride and handling are almost the same as the Passat. There is some hint of body roll which is expected. Not to be forgotten is this is not a shoddy Mexican VW but imported from Germany. While the design is not the latest trendy angular design, it is a classic styling exercise which wears well. Pros: First Rate audio system with MIB II. Great connectivity and better control layout than prior versions, Performance, Ride and Handling all above average. Cons: Older design with 3 stars in offset front end impacts. Less than average fuel economy and no SiriusXM on S model. In conclusion, if you purchase this vehicle it is because the positives matter to you and the negatives are overlooked. In short, stand out in the crowd and laugh that no one else has figured out what a great all around vehicle this is for $24k

GTI in SUV clothing!!!

Fun to drive with a definite German car feel......this is my 3rd Tiguan lease and they get better and better....I needed : towing capability to transport my 16ft fishing boat with gear,a roomy drivers cockpit, powerful turbo engine,a reasonable lease price, and, fun to drive. This SUV meets these and then some. The previous lease was the SEL model, fully loaded. In hindsight I would have been better off with the S Model considering my requirements and saved a bundle. This gives up the sunroof ,fog lights and Nav system. My take on the 2013 Nav system was mediocre at best.Miss the cornering fog lights.VW added the backup camera, upgraded fabric, keyless ignition, and rain sensing wipers probably to sweeten the deal for all 2016 Tiguans until the 2017 redesign becomes available.MSRP was also lower.VW also needs to recover credibility given the TDI disaster. The 16in wheels give such a good ride compared to the 18/19 options(which I had on the previous SE/SEL leases.Much more rubber to absorb bumps and grinds. As far as space goes the Tiguan is fine for grocery shopping, running errands,EZ parking, and trips to Home Depot for fertilizer etc. Wish the transmission shift points were more crisp(I like to use the manual shift feature) but maybe they have been tweaked to improve MPG which seems to be better than previous models.Early results are giving 25MPG since I just took delivery of the S being reviewed. This little SUV behaves just like much larger models only tighter, peppier, once again...fun to drive!

I have owned the Tiguan for a year and 4 months. I bought the Tiguan because I wanted a small SUV that could get out of its own way and have good handling. It does both of those things very well. The gas mileage has been better than advertised. I get 20 mpg around town and have got 31 mpg on the highway. I use to use 93 octane which VW recommends for best performance. A couple of months ago I tried using 87 octane, and I have been using it ever since. The gas mileage is the same, and I can't detect any pinging or performance loss. In fact Edmunds says that if a manufacturer only recommends and doesn't require Premium than use Regular gas. Consumers report also says the same thing. The savings can be as much as 50 cents a gallon. All in all the Tiguan handles very well, and it feels like a sedan except in extreme cases of cornering or maneuvering. Cons: My 2 complaints about the Tiguan is first, the engine sounds like a diesel on acceleration. The dealership told me that it is the injectors that make the noise. The dealer let me drive another one, and it made the same engine noise. My second complaint is the automatic transmission. It shifts slow whether in sport mode or manually shifting because it isn't a dual clutch. Even with those two complaints, I am glad I bought the Tiguan because it is fun to drive, and it feels more expensive than it is. The quality of the materials and the fit and finish is flawless. The rain sensing windshield wipers and heated seats are fantastic. The lumbar support in the driver's seat makes long trips enjoyable. I would recommend it to friends. Update: I have had the Tiguan for 1 year 9 months, and it has 14.500 miles. There have been no problems. I did go back to using 93 octane, because I noticed a 2 mile per gallon dip in gas mileage. That will close the gap in the price difference between 87 and 93 octane. I also noticed an affect on performance.

Great looking, great to drive, nice feel on the road. The interior is a couple of steps above the cars in its class like the Honda CRV or Toyota Rav4, very rich feel in fit and finish. I really like the black exterior with the black/charcoal interior It adds a touch of masculinity to the car, there is just enough satin chrome to offset all the black. Performance is far better than I expected, the turbo really adds to the acceleration and feeling of power when you drop the accelerator, very minimal turbo lag, sport mode is really fun and it gets you moving beyond highway speed limits very quick. The only minor issue that has taken some getting used to is the way the vehicle shifts going up and down steep hills, it just seems to take forever to shift when going up and downshifts a bit too quickly when going down. I am very pleased I chose the R Line, I like the sport package with the larger wheels, low profile tires and trim. I just didn't need the sunroof, navigation or some of the other options that the SE and SEL offered at a much higher price. For me this was the right choice 6 months of ownership and in the middle of a New England winter. The R line is a great looking and a great performing car, the low profile tires and 19 inch wheels look great but while they work ok with the 4 motion drive they aren't the best performing combination for deep snow. A narrower tire and wheel would work much better. That being said, I still would not trade the R line for a SE or SEL. 6 months later and I still love the car. Update at 2 years of ownership: I had a major issue with the brakes, I felt that, as a certified used vehicle, that all or at least part of the cost should have been covered by the warantee. The dealer offered little assistance with VW and I was stuck with a $1,300 bill. One other issue, I got stranded when a relay failed and all the electronics quit. It was completely covered under the warantee but the car cannot be loaded on a flatbed due to its 4 motion system and I had additional wait time for a specific tow truck that was not available locally that night. Fixed quickly and no issues since. I still like the car very much and I have looked at the new Tiguans and I definitely prefer my 2016 over the 2019. Update at 3 years: No issues at all in the past year, 53000 miles on the clock.Just had an oil change and inspection, everything in great working order. I have looked at the new R model, beautiful car but far, far too expensive so I will stick with my 2016 which still looks and performs great

2016 VW Tiguan is Teriffic!

This is a small German SUV. It is also the basis for other VW family models. Wonderful German feel and luxury while not breaking the bank. The 2016 model has many features standard that were available on high end models before. While the Tiguan doesn't have many gadgets it is a very capable vehicle. We looked at others and it came down to the Mazda CX-5 and Tiguan. We bought the Tiguan and are thrilled with it. We have owned a Nissan Rogue but I would say the VW is a better vehicle for the same money. The vehicle has a lot of value and should be explored especially for those people not looking for what everyone else is driving.

I bought the 2016 Tiguan S fwd in November 2015 (9months ago) as my first brand new car loved it at first but now I'm just okay with it. A few problems I've ran into is strictly with the dealership. When purchasing the base model we was told we could upgrade our stereo system to have navigation and XM radio added, after purchasing the car we took it back to have the upgrades service told us that it's not compatible? Another issue, my anti lock brakes are activating for no reason making it hard to stop its happened 3 or 4 times since I've owned it on smooth dry roads. Brought it to the closest dealership 30miles away for them to tell me they can't pull my warranty information I had to take it to the dealership I bought it from 50miles away. Why?? I've had it in the dealership 3times now for the antilock brakes and service says it's not throwing a code nothing is wrong with it bring it back when it happens again.. Some pro's about the Tiguan I really like how the car handles and the fwd does excellent in snow. MPG is great! I average about 29mpg combined (better than advertised).I like that the base models comes loaded. Heated leatherette seats, heated mirrors, push button start, kessy, auto headlights, rain sensing wipers, Bluetooth and back up camera. Con's, turning radius isn't all that great and the transmission shift points are a bit sloppy, mirrors are really small, anti lock brakes activating is concerning... The support from the dealership is terrible. I'm developing a bad taste for VW

I have always driven either a sedan or a hatch all my life. Except for the higher seats, it pretty much drives like a sedan. So when I really needed to buy an SUV for the longer drives and tougher terrain, I did a lot of research. Sure enough, you will get all the tech you want on all of the other brands (moon-roof, better infotainment, GPS navigation). For that, I drove the Subaru Crosstrek and even the Mazda CX5 prior to the purchase. But at the price point of the VW Tiguan, it just had the qualities I really wanted in an SUV. Stronger than the average engine, solid and premium driving performance, AWD, and being more like a compact SUV were all that made me decide. I initially had thoughts if I made the right decision because of all the bad reviews. But day after day of driving it makes me think that I made the right decision. It just grows on me everyday. In the end, it just depends on what you want in your SUV.

The Tiguan S can be had for a reasonable 24k and you get what you pay for, average all around but a superior driving experience compared to the competition. The CRV and RAV4 are more reliable and get better gas mileage but the VW almost feels like a GTI on stilts. The finishes are fine, the seats are comfortable, the turbo 4 gets you into traffic or into the fast lane if that's where you're headed. The headrests create blind spots but overall visibility is average and far better than American competition. Gas mileage fluctuates at 25-26 mpg using mid grade and commuting around DC. Not luxury but not cheap. Decent little commuter if you're sick of a sedan but don't need the utility of a bigger vehicle.

Quality Over Quantity

Smaller dimensions and my driving experience put the Tiguan in a class of its own. I enjoyed test driving the CX-5 and CR-V and while the Tiguan was not necessarily more athletic, the driving experience and interior felt a class above. This generation of the Tiguan is Volkswagen before the cost-cutting - not a volume seller, but it fills a niche for those wanting a premium feel without the Audi markup, much like the Jetta used to be stepping stone to the A4 or 3-series. Cargo space is comparable to a hatch, smaller than other compact CUV's, but just as versatile as both. As a side-note, I would pick the Jetta over both if VW would just improve the interior quality. The Golf is a great car and is the smart choice for fuel efficiency, but the looks never grew on me so the Tiguan was a good alternative. Contrary to most reviews, the interior was actually larger and more airy than I expected. With both the front and back seats adjusted all the way back, there was plenty of legroom but it comes at the expense of less cargo space in the rear. Fuel economy is not a strong point, especially since I do mostly city driving, but the performance in my eyes is worth the trade off. Once the turbo kicks in it's hard not to smile and it feels very stable at high speeds or during bad weather. The steering is a little light at lower speeds but has great feel at higher speeds. The stereo on the SE (something often overlooked in reviews but important to me) is as good, or better, than top of the line systems in other brands. In my opinion, the upgraded Fender system is unnecessary. The good aside, I have to agree the driving position takes getting used to. The view is commanding, but the steering wheel and dash feel too high, and the armrests too low (I am 6'0). I personally like the firm seats. I would not, and did not pay MSRP for the Tiguan SE, especially since an all-new version will be available later this year. Reliability is unknown for me at this point, but in over 100k miles with my last Jetta 2.5 I had to do nothing but replace a battery. Hoping for the same experience here.

Replaced water pump at 64,000 miles,$1,000. Replaced trailing arms at 60,000 mile, $1,000. Facing oil leak cost exceeding $1,000. Brakes are not worn, but feels like rotors are warped. Disappointed that I am incurring these costs at c. 60,000 miles. Still, it is a joy to drive. Considering trading it in for a low mileage 2014-2015 Tiguan. Ex-Audi A4 driver with similar disappointing history of repair costs. And yet...this is a beautiful little SUV

Best Car I've Ever Owned

I have owned several VWs over the years and actually my old 1990 Jetta was my favorite car. I loved it so much and cried when it died. I've owned other brands but, always seem to go back to Volkwagen. I had been looking for a compact SUV that was fun to drive. I really had not seen Tiguans or heard much about them in this area. But, around here the mid or larger SUVs are the norm. I tried a very other SUVs when my husband found a Tiguan and he really liked what he saw. He suggested I check it out. It was a 2016 SE in Panther Grey. I have not owned the car for very long but, am head over heels. While the familar VW feel is there, it also has it's same karma or essence. But, is far more luxurious then any VW I've ever had. From the steering wheel that doesn't have that hard plastic feel of most cars, to the comfortable seating and the easy to use but, somewhat techy media, navigation system to the beautiful, upscale interior and fun as heck sun roof system, it's like nothing else I've ever had. I love to drive it, even in heavy traffic (which is unusual for me) as it has a calming feel and like you are in control. The handling it amazing. Takes corners with confidence and hugs the road like nothing else. I honestly do not think I could enjoy a car more or love one as much. It is a really special car.

A great 3 year time!

I leased a 2016 Tiguan S for its price. Got it at an unbeatable price of $197 + taxes at 12000 miles/year. We'd a great time in this car and we are sad to part ways with it. Someone rear-ended it else would have brought this car from the dealer. Here's my review - car is attractive (german DNA); driving dynamics are great (being an FWD, it drove better than a 2016 Santa Fe AWD); comfort is great; visibility is awesome; the road presence is commanding; the engine is very powerful (although the initial acceleration is a little lethargic but is great past 2000 rpm); well built body (as mentioned, I was rear-ended by a chevy suburban at a speed of 30 MPH at a signal at a steep descent road of SFO downtown. The vehicle absorbed all the shock OUTSIDE but didn't pass much inside. No airbags were deployed). I handled the vehicle well and got it serviced regularly so got a mileage of ~28 mpg on highways/long trip and about ~17 in the Bay Area traffic, this averaging between 22 to 23 mpg (went by the average usage per month & the expense of gasoline to arrive at this figure); Decent audio with enough bass. There are some nasty issue in this specific model - Cruise control is stupid (happened so many times especially on highways that I reduce the speed but the system resets to the previous speed thus resulting in unintended acceleration instead of deceleration; speed doesn't stay at the set speed while descending hills, in increases instead; both situations are scary); Heater is awful (because of the pointed direction of vents, you'll feel that your right-hand fingers are burning even when the setting is at the 'low' level; after a few mins, all the passengers will feel discomfort with the heater even when it's low). Surprisingly, the local VW dealer says that VW is not aware of such issues on a "mass scale" and says that if a problem like that exists, VW would have acted on it immediately. Other 'manageable' issues are - Battery issues (I need to press that ON/OFF button twice); Breaks aren't that great (take a little more distance before coming to halt); Navigation voice over Bluetooth is lost for 1-2 sec for every direction (Google says "In two-miles, take an exit..." but you'll hear only "take an exit.."); only small bottle holders in the rear doors; very less cabin space (but shouldn't be a deal breaker since this falls between a compact & subcompact SUV); the use of only-91-octane gasoline fuel for the turbocharged engine. Despite all these problems, the overall experience of the vehicle was just great. Hopefully, the 2018/19 models have these problems fixed.

2016 S

I've been leading a 2016 Tiguan S for about a month and so far I am very happy with it. The stock stereo is great, it rides and drives like a Golf, the interior is well thought out and feels much higher quality than its price would imply. Not sure if VW rates their engines at the wheels but every FWD model I've seen dyno results on matches VW's power output claim, so in reality the engine is likely putting out 230+hp and 240+lb-ft, and it feels like it. I'm coming from a modified, 400hp Taurus SHO so I was expecting a huge let down. I'm quite happy with the getup and go this car has. I'm also averaging 20.5 mpg in the city (actual city) and 28 on the highway with cruise at 75. Now for my complaints: no satellite radio on the base model. Seriously? Almost everyone else has that. As a satellite radio subscriber this let me down, but not enough to outshine the merits of the rest of the car Trunk is small. Very small. Like can't fit my collie mix comfortably in the back with the rear seats fully reclined. Fortunately this can be overcome by sliding or angling the seats forward. All things considered I think this is the most underrated small SUV on the market

Now had 2+ months with SUV. Nice SUV, handles well, accelerates well, amazing breaks and nice handling. But in typical VW fashion, all the technological gadgets fall well short of expectations. The car is equipped with Apple Play, which is supposed to integrate with I-Phone. Well, it does, but then starts glitching when switching between phone/texts and transitioning back to radio which sometimes just stops working altogether. Sometimes (often) when connecting the i-phone through USB, the connection fails. Its frustrating and I prefer to not use this feature altogether. Sound system is poor, sound distribution not designed well the sound is poor. Although the gas mileage is acceptable for an SUV - the gas tank appears to be small and if you do any type of regular driving, you'd have to refuel every other day.

I have had this car for about a month now and could not be happier. I had been searching for reviews on the Tiguan in the snow and failed to find any and I can now say from an owner of one that I highly recommend this vehicle for those specific conditions. I live on top of a mountain located at a ski resort so traveling on the access road had always been difficult with my FWD Jetta. The switch to the Tiguan has been exceptional, even with keeping the all seasons that it came with. It has had NO hesitation in these conditions at all, especially the icy driveway. Safety definitely gets an A+. I was rear ended the first day I had the vehicle with my dog in the back. I was left with very minimal damage from the crash, which was extremely impressive. There is plenty of space in the trunk for a medium sized dog(mine is about 65lbs). Not sure large dogs will be a great fit. I am also very pleased with the interior being leather for all base models.

2016 Volkswagen Tiguan SEL 4Motion 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

We presently own two NMS Passat TDI's. We'll turn in our SE and keep the SEL due to Dieselgate. Allow me to make a fair comparison... Tiguan is a different vehicle than Passat but very much the same in many ways. Tiguan is smaller than the NMS and the gas engine doesn't readily compare with the TDI. That said, Tiguan is a VERY nice, though pricey, vehicle. Interior room is fairly small, but anyone complaining should have noted this before buying. Over the road economy seems to hover at about 26 mpg while our TDI's push well over 40 mpg. Tiguan has less bells and whistles than the competition and compares favorably with the NMS SEL.. Not a bad thing really as most of the lauded innovations on other vehicles are more of a distraction than of benefit. Comfort, handling, and overall quality is superior to the competition in my opinion. So far 1600 miles without a single complaint. Bang for the buck? Probably NOT a bargain if you like Toyota, Kia, Ford, or Honda and others. On the other hand a real bargain when compared to the Audi or MB offerings which really aren't that much nicer than Tiguan. Bottom line? My wife saw it and the hunt was over. I think the Panther Gray put it over the top.

Agree with Reviewer Jason: Tiguan is Tops (for Me)

This is a sweet car. It is so stable on the road and, did I mention the acceleration. Man, you definitely feel that 200 HP. You will not have any problems merging or passing. GTI on stilts is an apt. description. The interior quality is great. The materials, the layout, the luxurious feel for a vehicle that costs under $18k lightly used. VW's have the best exterior quality of any vehicle in any class IMHO, and that is true for the Tiguan as well. Love the knarly tires (17 inch). They probably have something to do with the low fuel economy. For me, though, the tradeoff is worth it. The driving experience--VWs for are people who LIKE to drive--is tops. Someone mentioned vehicle roll and there is some vehicle roll on turns. It's to be expected with any high-riding vehicle. Braking too is smooth like butter. They kick in at just the right rate. As another mentioned, the audio quality is superb with the standard equipment. The drawbacks have already been mentioned, fuel economy, limited cargo space. I don't have kids and am willing to invest a little more in fuel to enjoy the driving experience. So in my book, they are acceptable trade offs. Also, I would say that the steering, while precise and comfortable, does not quite give one much road feel. That is due to the "fly by wire" system. On maintenance and repair frequency and costs I cannot comment bc I have driven the vehicle less than 2,000 miles. There are some horror stories on here but I am hoping those are the small minority.

As much space, comfort, and technology as the BMW, Audi, and Mercedes in its class, but with a significantly reduced price. We prefer German engineering, but it doesn't feel like we moved out of a luxury car class.

Taiguan nightmare

I have only 16,000 on my VW Taiguan and it has stopped dead twice. Computer went dead, can't get it out of park to tow, dealership won't help, tow trucks won't tow a 4-motion because of potential damage. No way to mechanically put the car into neutral for a tow and dealership says that's my problem not theirs. The car is electronically unreliable. Brand new battery, jumper cables don't help, dash indicators don't come on, stuck in park, stuck in emergency brake on. Car won't move with or without power and I am told by VW Dealership it is not their problem. Don't buy a VW Taiguan or you will be stuck somewhere without a car. They are not reliable. Headlights come on bright and battery is only 4 weeks old and full of power. Don't buy an unreliable, bad service, VW Taiguan.

German Quality and Ride

The 2016 Tiguan is Volkswagen's compact SUV. It exhibits typical German driving and handling characteristics. The interior and switch gear is of high quality and instruments well laid out. It provides a very stable, confident, yet comfortable ride. If you enjoy the typical "German" driving experience the VW Tiguan provides it at a very reasonable price.

We have a 6 speed automatic turbo. Pro: This car has guts. It will really fly. No problems getting onto the freeway. The front seating is nice and high off the ground for older people. Making easier to get in and out. Adequate space for groceries. Back seats flatten out for more room. The only con I have with this car is because it is a 6 speed automatic it shifts constantly when you are driving to adjust to the terrain, which can be annoying.

I hadn't had my tiguan much more than a month, and my daughter and I were on our way home from our state fair, just doing the speed limit, as always. When all in a sudden I had no steering, we were on the freeway on the inside lane, first we went down into the grassy mid section, I thought I was going to roll it! But I fought with the steering until I we were up onto the road, how I did it I don't know, but I got the vehicle turned and I slammed my brakes on! However, we still hit the guard rail. No air bags deployed, not one I'm still a polled, I thought my Tiguan was a safe vehicle, my daughter received concussion, and I whip lash, still to this day have trouble with my neck. I never got compensated for my loss of my tiguan. My insurance kept saying it was a caused by a default, so Volts Wagon was responsible, but my vehicle was towed to a yard who said the fee would be$1,000 to get it out fot testing, I couldn't come up with that much so it was sold! I'll never buy Volts Wagon again!

I absolutely love this car! So much so that I have recently bought my second 2016 Tiguan in a higher trim level. My first one, an SE which I adored, was totaled in a bad freeway-speed hit and run a few months back- and it kept me safe without even a scratch (physically anyway). I looked at so many other, newer cars, and in the end decided to replace it with an SEL. I had some initial electrical issues, now resolved, but beyond that I couldn't be happier with it. The Tiguan is neither pretentious nor sporty, but very good-looking, with an interior designed so intuitively that the arrangement of controls is exactly right and logical. The drive is smooth and quiet, yet it's still capable of bursts of speed and quick braking as needed, holding the road nicely. I've already indirectly addressed the safety features- this little, tough, spunky Tiguan cushioned and kept me safe when I was slammed into at 85 mph and spun across several lanes of traffic, smashing backwards into the opposite retaining wall. It isn't expensive to maintain or repair, nor is it a gas guzzler. In short, I can't say enough about the 2016 Tiguan.
