2017 Volkswagen Passat R-Line 4dr Sedan (1.8L 4cyl Turbo 6A)

I recently leased a 2017 Passat R-Line and I have to say I am surprised by how good it is. I'm pretty OCD and normally take a long time and make careful decisions. I cross-shopped it with other mid-size sedans, mainly the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Kia Optima, Hyundai Sonata, Chevrolet Malibu, and Ford Fusion. Basically I rented or test drove all the main mid-sizers except the Subaru Legacy. In terms of handling, the Passat is middling. It is a bit bouncy and feels just a bit floaty at high speeds (over 80 mph, which is normal speed on SoCal freeways when not congested). Of all of them, the best driving were the Mazda 6, Ford Fusion, and Honda Accord, followed by the Malibu, Optima and Passat, with the Sonata bringing up the rear. In terms of comfort, however, by far the most comfortable was the Passat, both for the front seats and especially the crazy large backseats. It also feels very airy and the sight lines are very good (except to the direct rear, where high back headrests intrude a little). The little 1.8 liter turbo engine is a champ. It felt at least as powerful as the base engines in the other mid-sizers, and more powerful than some. Yeah, its 170 horsepower doesn't sound very impressive, but its 184 lb ft of torque is always there and gives really good oomph. I will check mpg when I've had it for longer. In terms of technology and infotainment, I would say the Passat ranks pretty well, but is not the best. The R-Line has the key safety features I was looking for: Wide angle rear camera, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot monitor, and forward collision alert with emergency braking. The one feature it is missing which I wanted was adaptive cruise control - I would have needed to go up to the SE With Technology for that (I think Edmunds lists it in the normal SE, which seems to be a rare error by Edmunds). One possible safety issue: The headlights aren't the best. I have the halogens - the LED headlights are supposed to be a bit better, but mine doesn't have them. I can see fine with the halogens, but they aren't very bright and some people might wish for more brightness. In terms of looks, I would say the Passat is attractive from all angles, especially the back and side, although I think looks are really a matter of personal taste. Trunk space is very good - 15.9 cubic feet, and the space is very functional, plus the rear seats fold down 60/40. The main reason I chose the Passat was that, looked at as a whole package, I felt better about it than any of the others. It just feels extremely easy to live with, and also feels like a premium car but at a lower price than others on this list. There is nothing it doesn't do well, and some things it does great (did I mention the huge open airy comfortable cabin? Let me mention it again). Plus the dealership (Mossy VW in Escondido, CA) was more willing to work with me than other dealers. So I drove off with what I felt was the best car of the bunch, at the lowest price of the bunch, what's not to like? It's too new to give any reliability impressions - I might do that after I've had more time with the car.

Passat R-Line best value midsize sedan you can buy

I bought this car on Father's Day this year as a replacement for my family's 3rd car. The idea was that my 3 high schoolers would use this car. However, as soon as my wife saw the car and drove it, she claimed it as hers and passed her car down to the kids. The R-Line looks so much better than any other trim. The front fascia is formidable. Especially our white R-Line with the black and chrome trim. Add to that the standard 19" wheels and you've got yourself an awesome looking car. This is not quite an Audi A6 but then again, I got this car for about $19,500 (sticker price was over $26,500; I got exactly 25% off) . Amazing, amazing, amazing. Best features: incredible gas mileage. When driving by myself I get 32-35 MPG in mostly suburban driving. Of course if you are a more aggressive driver, I'm sure you can do much worse. The automatic transmission can be put in S-mode for Sport and this really brings the car alive with much shorter shift cycles. The 19" low profile tires give the car a very sporty feel with great grip. Of course this also means a slightly less comfortable ride on bumpy roads. The back seat of this car offers leg room that is unheard of. I'm 6'2" with long legs and I still have about 4" of space in front of my knees. Overall the cabin space in this car is impressive. Standard on the R-Line is perforated faux leather, which is very nice and easy to clean. The R-Line offers Apple Carplay and Android Auto standard. Once you experience this great feature, you would never want to buy a car again without this feature (Toyota/Lexus is the ONLY manufacturer to flat out refuse to offer this on their new cars; however, that will resolve itself next year when they realize how this stubbornness is going to cost them a boat load of sales....). Use your phone's map feature as your always up-to-date and free GPS, listen to incoming texts and send out replies hands-free, totally voice activated. Fantastic. Heated seats are standard, this is a feature I will not have to use here in the tropical climate in Southwest Florida. Still nice to have for road trips up North. Great dual zone climate control, however, the rear of the car only has vents under the front seats, not in the center console. Definitely a negative. As a matter of fact, there basically is nothing in the rear center console, so also no additional USB outlets. Another negative for sure. All-in-all, I still cannot believe that I bought this fabulous car for under $20,000. And just to reiterate, this car was built in Volkswagen's brand new state-of-the-art plant in Chattanooga TN, not in Mexico (after having owned a few Mexico built VWs in the past, I will stay clear of those. I can still easily pick them out on the road. They are the VWs with only one headlight working....). The build quality of the car seems top notch. The hood and doors, trunk all fit very tightly. I did not test drive Camry, Accord, Mazda 6 or Hyundai/Kia competitors, but I don't think anyone can better the value of this Passat R-Line. That's my bottom line. Update after 10,000 miles: No problems to report, still very happy! Update 11/2019 after 25,000 miles. No problems to report, still very happy! Had this car for 42 months. Great car. Had to replace the stock battery after about 40 months (Southwest Florida, tropics, not the best environment for batteries), but apart from that, no issues. I got this car right after VW went through the whole Diesel scam episode, and paid less than $20,000 for it. If you look at a 2021 VW Passat R-Line you see that the price now approaches $40,000 :-) Timing is everything!!!

I had been looking for a new car for months and was thinking Audi or Lexus. I preferred German engineering over all else as I used to own a BMW 328i but decided to sell it before major repairs became a common place situation. I went to my local VW dealer and saw the R Line in Black and realized I preferred the look of this car over the new A4. Took it for a test drive and fell in love. I don't know how the specifications are so low on the engine, 170 HP and 184 ft lb torque when it feels like it pulls like a much higher engine. I was extremely impressed by the package and with the incentive, acquired the car for slightly over $22k. Insane value. After the past few days I am in love. It's quiet, perky, handles extremely well, fuel efficient and beautiful to look at and sit in. I think VW really has a winner with this one. I look forward to owning this car for awhile.

Simply best in its segment. Test driven many competitors, but VW PASSAT definitely stands out. Excellent handling and brakes, awesome road experience, quality interior, great infotainment system, catchy design (I leased the R-Line model), and many more. Definitely recommend this car, especially with current deals from Volkswagen.

A different experience

After owning a 2006 Honda Accord V6 EXL with NAV for the past 5 years I was a little nervous about going with a VW with a 4 cylinder Engine; especially after having my mind set on getting a 14 Accord EXL V6. After about 4 months of research and 1 step in the Passat I knew this was the car for me. The VW Passat, in my opinion, is a totally different experience than what you expect with other brands. The VW Passat is classy, solid and a true drivers car. The 1.8 tsi is peppy and an absolute blast to drive engine; I find myself having a lot more fun than I did driving with my V6. I even got 40 MPG on the freeway going 65 mph with the AC on. The controls are simple to use and everything feels like it's in the right place. The steering wheel is comfortable and doesn't take a long time getting used to. I opted for the lighting package, which takes this car to an Audi level. I get lots of looks during the day thanks to the DRL LED strip. The 3 stage seat warmers are awesome and the seats are pretty comfortable. I am a tall guy and I absolutely love the room in this car, I just turned 26 and wanted to get an "adults" car since I will be owning this car in my 30's. I feel very happy and confident in my decision to buy a new VW Passat. This car is surely to give me many years of reliability and fun. I know VW may have had some issues and people have a bad taste in thier mouth about VW, but I have owned 3 Hondas and it wasn't always as reliable as the perception would lead you to believe. I take great care of my cars and only use dealers. I put shell v power in my cars and do scheduled maintenance on time and still had issues with my accord's. I believe with maintaing my VW as I should it will prove to be just as dependable. If your considering Honda, Toyota, Nissan, etc.. put the Passat SE with lighting on your list. One step in the VW will show you how a car should be built. Plus I got a $28,010 dollar car for $22,500!!! It was a no branienr.

This is a fun car to drive. I purchase the SE with technology and this car is great. I disagree with Edmunds about the sluggish transmission, NOT. Feels like a sport car and it competes with its rivals. It is loaded with technology and worth the price, I paid $ 22,671 after taxes ETC and trade in. Such a steal on the MSRP is $ 29,375

My first Passat was a 2007 model which I loved and regret selling it. The 2017 R-Line model has made me forget about the previous models. Great looking car and fun to drive so far. I work for Toyota but I choose the Passat over the Camry. I put over 40k on my previous models and had ZERO issues.

The R-line's sleek design and handling are A+

The R-line has a beautiful sporty design compared to the base S model. The 19in aluminum alloy wheels are stylish and really grip the road allowing for great tight handling; and the R-line's cabin is quiet even with the larger tires. Combined MPG is higher than EPA estimates of city/hwy 23/34, I'm currently getting about 31.5 (half hwy, half city). What makes the Passat R-line stand above it's competitors is it's technology and low price. The central info-entertainment system is far superior to it's competitors including the Camry, Optima, Legacy, and Madza 6. Also, it comes in a few thousand below the base prices of several of its competitors, making it an affordable yet very reliable option. As an added plus is the size of the cabin. It's huge compared to other midsize sedans. Overall, very impressive for a vehicle in the low 20s. After 2 years, my R-line is still running strong and doing well through harsh winters. MPG is great, especially with mostly highway mileage. All in all, would 100% repurchase and recommend!

Quite a car for the money. The 1.8T engine is peppy, if not strong and smooth like a V6. Two great fun options are the Tiptronic shifting and the Sport mode for the 6-speed transmission. This car has a lot of technology and is fun to operate. There is no native Navigation but there is interface to the iPhone and Android which is actually better than Navi because you are using your own phone which you know backwards and forwards. All the features are projected to the large info screen on the dash. This saves a good $1500-2000 from the MSRP. First day I had 3 adult passengers for a trip to a baseball game with two six-footers in the back who raved about the roominess and the ride. Gas mileage looks like as advertised. Happy with this car.

My R Line 45k miles later

I’ve owned my Passat R line for 2.5yrs and I have driven over 45k miles in it. I haven’t had to have any significant repairs other than me curbing my beautiful 19 inch wheels (my fault) and 2 minor accidents where I was rear ended (their fault). Safety wise this car is built like a tank. I don’t think you can find a safer car at this price point. I came from a V8 Cadillac STS so I’m a power junky. I use premium fuel and have added a Neuspeed Power module. It’s been plug and play power which really woke the car up. These cars have decent aftermarket parts which can get you an even better driving sleeper at a low price. Interior layout and materials are great at this price point. Do your maintenance on time and use quality stuff when you do (5k mile synthetic oil changes, premium fuel, etc) and these cars are roomy and trouble free. I’ll be getting an APR tune and doing some suspension upgrades and for a minimal price I’ll be in the bargain Audi area for performance with a German designed car built in America. Can’t beat it...buy it used with low miles and save even more money. New warranty is outstanding at 6yrs/72k miles on everything! Go VW GO!!!

Update: Car is still a great drive. Performance seems down a very small amount but overall I would buy again. Great car with a lot of room and is very easy to drive. Comfortable on trips for 4 adults. Performance is great for U.S. highways. The fronts seats are good overall but would be great if they had a tilt function to support the thighs better. I enjoy it and the price was great.

I thoroughly researched the midsize segment and found the Passat to be a perfect fit for me. I live in metro Phoenix so opted for the S trim since I'm not a fan of leatherette seats in our intense summer heat. The base model has plenty of standard features, and I was able to purchase a new one for $18,800. I love the fit and finish of the vehicle with its accompanying handsome, understated design, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a comparable sedan for under 19K. I've owned all type of cars from different manufacturers, but this is my first VW, and I am very pleased. I highly recommend the Passat.

It's a very roomy sedan with a huge trunk making it a comfortable people hauler... but its quite sporty looking in white with piano black/chrome details, sporty front fascia, low profile tires and 19" gun powder wheels... it also has good pick up and is rather quiet... overall ride is competent and the car handles well... had no problems whatsoever so far... love driving it... looks and feels like a much more expensive car inside out... and again its no slouch... and pretty good on the gas if you don't push it all the time... and all the while the price is just under $290 a month for a 3 year lease with 15,000 miles per year... to sum it up: a really good car for the money!

Currently only have 1200 miles. Will update as miles increase. As expected so far I really enjoy the car for what it is. I was in the market for midsize 4 door for the family and my daily commuter vehicle (50 miles round trip). I'm normally a Honda or Toyota guy for my daily drivers, you can't deny reliably and resale of those brands. I previously owned a new 2014 Honda Accord sport, I have zero complaints other than the cvt transmission, which I hate in any brand! My local vw dealership had a few passat r line's priced very aggressively that caught my attention. If I had to pay msrp I would have passed on a vw product and just purchased a Camry or Accord, not that they aren't worth the money but resale is horrendous on German brands (Audi,BMW,Mercedes etc) I only keep my vehicles 2 years max normally and always purchase never lease so resale values are important to me. I purchased my passat r line for 19300 plus tax and tile! Msrp was 25300! I feel this is a tremendous value for 22k out the door!!!! I wasn't interested in any other Passat model other than the r line, love the wheels and slightly sporty appearance package it offers! It feels like a 30k car! So far the passat seems on par with my previous Accord sport. I do prefer the 6spd auto and interior quality, infotainment (carplay👍🏼) compared to the Honda. I highly recommend the Passat r line if you can purchase for around $20,000 before taxes and fees

I had been driving a 2007 Mazda 3 with over 216,000 miles when I decided it was time for a second car, I did a lot of research and comparison shopping. My decision came down to a toss up between a Passat and a Mazda 6, Passat is by far the best bang for he buck, the price on this thing just couldn't be beat. It's $31,000 car that I got for $20,000 with only 7500 miles on it and 1 year old. I will say that I love the look of the Passat, the technology is good, the drive is good, handling is ok when compared to the Mazda 3. The one thing that will make me trade this car in is the driver seat comfort, it is the most uncomfortable car I have ever driven, I've had the car for several months now and still cannot find a comfortable seat position. I have instant back pain every time I get behind the wheel. That is really my only complaint about the Passat, If I can find a comfortable position I will be in love with the car, if not I will continue to hate it until it's gone!

Leased a 2017 Passat after my 2014 Accord lease expired. Accord is considered the cream of the family sedan crop. But, the interior of the Passat is far nicer than the Accords. The CVT in the Accord is unobtrusive but noisy during acceleration. I have found the VW's six speed to be a superior transmission and when paired to the 1.8L Turbo, offers spirited acceleration when needed and excellent highway MPG's. City mileage is average. The power train is a smooth and quiet operator. Ride in the Passat is at least equal to, if not slightly superior, to the Accords. The Passat offers an ever so slightly firmer ride, which I prefer. Neither the Accord nor the Passat are segment leaders in overall handling. But, again, the Passat is at least equal to, if not a little bit better, than the Accord. Overall driving dynamics in the Accord is softer than the Passat with more body lean in turns. Passenger room, both front and back, is enormous. The exterior design on the Passat may seem a bit bland to some, but, wind and road noise is barely above a whisper and visibility is excellent.

Don't understand what the only other review left for the 2017 Passat even has to do with the car.. Clearly the TDI engine is NOT available anymore, but 1.8T is a workhorse if nothing else that provides a compliant and efficient drive. App connect software is great. Can buy one for 22k, which is great.

I love almost everything about my car the styling, mpg, build quality, interior quality and a peppy engine that loves to pump out torque. My only complaint is it has a very stiff ride and to make matters worse my city has horrible roads. But all in all I would highly recommend this car to my friends and family. German engineering is head and shoulders above American.

Bottom line is as a professional that had out grown my GTI and I desperately needed something that looked more adult and maintained an element of driver engagement. I was hesitant when my wife suggested this car however after I drove it back to back with its competitors I new that this was the one. The combination of its turn radius, light weight feel of the car, brisk acceleration, and the Velcro like grip you get on a sweeping turn, made this car feel more like a European luxury sports car that costs 5-10k over the asking price. We like to make our vehicles earn there keep. With the seats down I was able to fit extra long boxes in the massive rear and trunk area. The car is not perfect by any means. I have notices wear and tear here and there. I have thought of mentioning this to the dealership. I have had no major problems thus far with this car. Hopefully we get the Passat that has been out in Europe stateside soon. This six year old model though a great car is a little long in the tooth.

I traded in my little sports coupe for a more mature ride on my 30th birthday and I think I made the right choice. I love the clean lines, the simplicity of the interior, the beautiful 19inch wheels and of course the lighting package is a must. There is nothing bothersome of the Passat, it's a car that's easy to live with for many years. I test drove the new Camry and Accord and personally I think they're over styled and the interiors were far more distracting, ugly, and not user friendly. I'm a first time VW owner and not the last for sure. I've owned my Passat for a year and have already put 25k miles on it. I have not had 1 hiccup other than routine maintenance.

A fun family sedan

I chose the VW Passat over everything else in this segment because it offered the best blend of interior quality, driving dynamics, practicality, fuel economy, reliability, and value for money. It's a fun family sedan with a very roomy, good quality interior. The back seat legroom is incredible and VW did a good job putting quality materials in the cabin where they count. I also purchased it because I thought the exterior and interior design would age well over time. If you're considering this car, you might have some concerns about reliability being a VW product. The only issue I experienced with this vehicle was the head unit software crashed one time and required a reboot. It hasn't happened since then, so I have not bothered mentioning it to the dealer service department. This generation of Passat is mature and it appears all the bugs have been worked out. I'll also add that paint quality is fantastic for this segment and I have not had issues with excessive paint chips or scratches, which seemed like a common complaint about other brands. April 2023 update: I'm still enjoying my Passat and everything has been holding up well (interior, trim, paint, etc). No issues or mechanical faults to report, and the local VW dealer is very professional when going in for scheduled maintenance.

Sweet driving car

Turned in my 2013 diesel TDI SE pursuant to the emissions fraud settlement and bought a gas powered 2017 SE 4cyl. with the proceeds. Sweet riding and driving car. Well put together. If you liked the 2012-2016 Passat you will feel at home with the 2017 model. Not many changes. The gas powered Passat doesn't have the torqued up feel of the diesel version. The engine and transmission don't break speed down hill like the diesel version did. Consequently, I anticipate that it will burn brakes faster than the earlier diesel versions. The standard 4cyl. 1.8 turbo powered engine has plenty of get up and go. However, fuel economy is nowhere close to the earlier diesel versions. Unlike the diesel versions that got great mileage all the time, mileage on the gas powered 2017 Passat tends to run in two modes: low to mid 20s in town and mid to high 30s on the interstate. Not much in between. However, I think 40 mpg is possible on a long trip if the gasoline powered car is driven properly. My diesel TDI routinely got over 50 mpg on long trips. VW decided to reduce the vertical opening of the front door entry way by about 1". That was a terrible mistake. It may make the car look sportier but it makes it more difficult to get in and out of if you are 6'2" tall or more. People don't buy a Passat to be sporty. No free maintenance program comes with this car. It has a large back-up camera and blind spot warning sensors, etc.. Stereo system, Bluetooth and other electronic app functions work great. Same huge trunk. Heated front seats. AC system and controls have been enhanced. LED lighting package is a worthwhile option. I am basically delighted with my 2017 Passat SE. I hope it will prove to be a versatile and maintenance free car over time.

Passat R-line is the best looking sedan!

The Passat is a very nice car. Turns heads all the time. If only VW would make this car its own trim (already did for 2017 but for 2018 and on) with better specs and equipment. When I was car shopping for a large sedan, the Passat offered me THE space (for my son's car seat), good car looks, fuel economy, and great looking interiors. A few may say that the Passat is an old guy's car but in reality I am almost 30 and like that elegant/sporty look of what this 2017 Passat offers. Even better, the unique color, Urano Gray that my Passat has. Good job on that VW. Make this Passat a 2.0, give its own spotlight as the 2018 Passat GT without the ugly two tone seats, enhanced engine, PUSH button start, keyless entry/remote start, fender audio system preferably 1000 watts and basically the rest of the SEL Premium features and bammmmm! The perfect Passat. This car is great on gas. Accelerates super good. On a full tank the car displays 475mi and actually consumes 420mi (city/highway).

Roomy, simple design (inside and out), the quietness of the cabin, friendly user interface (very straight forward for all the controls), the backseat is really spacious (with air vents and USB charging ports), so as the trunk, the back seat is foldable to give an extra storage for more items.. The 1.8T base engine is powerful enough for a long drive or just on a day to day driving to work. Though the gas mileage isn't the greatest compared to any mid-size sedan on the market. Comes with all the safety features, the steering is smooth as well. The acceleration is kind of odd. But overall, I like my VW Passat. Simple yet elegant design.

I was in the auto business for 30 years. As far as I am concerned if you can find a nicer overall new car buy it quickly. This auto is the se with the tech pkg. It is the nicest riding and handling auto I have driven in my 30 years in the business.Ithas great interior room and a giant trunk. The seats have piping on that make the interior look much more expensive then it is.It feels rock solid and almost gets hybrid fuel economy .The dealer has drawings for dinners and details. I get compliments on the looks where ever I go and it!s made in America. I am now a year down the road and not one problem.Just went for the one year service.cost was $ 116. The service was quick, still very pleased.

It gets better fuel mileage than they say - keep it between 60-65 on highway and usually gets 40+ mpg which astonishes me given the size of the car. Have had only one repair and it was the front sensor for the adaptive cruise went out so I could not use the cruise on one trip. Its not perfect as I think it is a little noisier than it has to be but my last sedan was an LS430 so my comparison isnt equal. It looks more expensive than its price suggests and the contrast piping on the seats really dresses them up. Overall, could not be more pleased with the purchase - glad I did not cave and settle on an entry level SUV -

1 Year Review - Passat R-Line

Car is great overall (5 Star) , but it needs more USB ports.... Not enough! One thing I did not like was that you cant remove the traction control off if you want.. my other cars, I used to remove the traction control, only when I needed to get the car out of the snow, (not while driving). Also, I had an issue with the dashboard once, I was leaving to work early in the morning and the lights inside the dashboard would not go ON... took it to the dealership and they fixed it. (Electrical issue), the problem never came back after that. Finally, the car has a very sensitive "break Assist" in my opinion.

Outstanding value and quality! My wife had a 2013 Passat TDI which she sold back to VW. After looking around at other brands she decided she missed the Passat style, room and driving quality. A new red Passat was located at a Seattle dealership and after a few phone conversations the deal was made and at a great price. I flew down and drove the vehicle back up to AK (2300 mi). I thought I'd miss the TDI grunt but the TSI is very impressive...good acceleration, smooth and mpg in the high 30's. I would recommend the Passat to anyone looking for a mid size car! (UPDATE} After two and half years of ownership all is good we are still very happy with the Passat. It has 30K on it now and still looks and drives like new. I did miss the diesel TDI though so I found a 2014 Beetle TDI (6 speed stick) in AZ that VW put back on the market. It doesn't get the mpg it did prior to the mod but did get 39-42 mpg on the drive to AK (3700 mi). Boy is it fun to drive!!!

Taking long drives is so much fun and enjoyable with the family. Handles those curvy Bay Area backroads like a champion cool and calm. Hard to think of going back to something less spacious.

So I have had SUVs and trucks for most of my life, decided to try and change it up. This vehicle is great for those like myself w/a heavy foot. I will list MAIN Pros and Cons that aren't so much based on personal preference but on popular preferences: Pros: Gray leather interior Easy to clean interior Simple to use and reliable tech hook up Long lasting oil changes Quick and nicely maneuvering Sun/Moon roof Nice trunk space Lighting inside and out is amazing Heated seats Quiet idle Cons: Loud driving no matter what tires change Its FWD & my front tires always ended up terrible worn and more often replacements needed Easily dents on exterior Not a lot of space/room in front between driver and passenger No a big enough center console Easily stains everywhere with cleaning difficult on areas that aren't made of hard material Hard to get sideviews exactly right or just designed with poor angle visibility options Gas mileage mediocre at best

I bought the 2017 R-Line Passat brand new and I’ve had it almost 4 years now. In my opinion there are some pros and cons to this car. Overall, I like the car but my husband is thinking about trading in his 2013 SE Passat for a pickup truck and I’m thinking about keeping his car and letting him trade in my R-Line because I think his Passat drives better. His v6 is much quicker than the 4 cylinder that comes in my model. My husband’s has a tighter steering column which I like and overall, it’s a smoother ride because it doesn’t have the lower profile tires that mine has. Pros: Beautiful car, I love the sporty look of the R-Line, tons of interior space and trunk space, back-up camera, heated seats and mirrors which all come standard, great gas mileage, all the interior features feel ergonomically correct. You really won’t find anything else like it for the price. Cons: Weak power compared to the v6 (it’s fine for highway driving but doesn’t have great pick-up from the start) No vents in the backseat which other models do have (this bothers me because of small children riding in the back on very hot or cold days) Tires suck (the 19” wheels look really good but the low profile tires make the ride a bit noisy and not very smooth and even worse is that they are more likely to get nails and things stuck in them. I’ve gotten 2 nails stuck in them at different times and also had a tire blowout when I hit a small pothole during winter. Due to their size, the tires can be a little harder to find and they cost more to replace. They also recommend replacing the tires in multiples which ends up being costly. I would absolutely buy another VW but I don’t think I’d buy another R-Line model.

No generally a fan of FWD disposable cars / sedans but darn Passat has active electronic steering no torque steer, holds road better then my BMW's, 40 mpg on highway often overall 34mpg on long trip this weekend in and out of in city driving roomy comforable just right tech (blind spot monitoring and LED lights) Not sure how much i like active braking but likely to come in handy...had it trigger on a pothole going 30mpg but no harm would just recommend this as a car to consider no matter WHAT vehicle you have in mind. Better car then SUV's fold down seats give as much room as small SUV but a large car handles like a sports car...... just open your mind away from Jap and Korean disposable refrigerators and give it a look. Is a car would have fit in BMW's line up in 90's and early 2000's.... current BMW's just to fragile. Upgraded Audi from VW over automated gizmo and not as large..... hell of a car

I have now put 36,000 miles on this car. I bought with 12K miles on it. I am an engineer car guy and pretty fussy about technology. I still love the car. The interior is really comfortable. Controls are logical, feel good and are well placed, except HVAC control symbols could be a lot larger. Love the carplay for music and the screen is nice and big. Sometimes the Carplay screen doesn't show my spotify or podcast info but still works. Can text by voice with Siri, which I love. The R-line has no sunroof or fog lamps. I didn't want a sunroof but the fog lights would be nice. One transmission shift point is a little off to me but overall I love the car. Nice acceleration for a 4 cylinder and gas mileage ranges between 30 and 35 mpg. I would have liked the brakes to stop a little easier but not awful. Update: Brakes had a recall and rotors were replaced and the brakes are great now! My only real complaint is that the transmission downshift at 30 mph is a little abrupt, should shift at a little lower RPM, in my opinion but this is really minor. This car is a screaming deal for the money! Go buy one.

This is my second Passat. I had the 2014 model with the 2.5, 5 cylinder model that actually sold me on Volkswagen. I hadn't had a VW since my early days with several of the Legacy VW bugs. That one impressed me totally. Smooth ride, quiet, with a minimum of problems. (Battery died which I had to replace on my own dime, electronic steering issue which they corrected at no cost.) At the end of my lease, I decided to look at the Tiquan but found it was only half the size of my Passat, so I opted to go for the Passat. The Wolfsberg version was no longer available so I was directed to an R-Line version. I have not been so disappointed in a car in my life. It's a beautiful car on the skin, but inside, a total disappointment. It started off with one of the R-Line badges losing letters off one of the badges. So much for quality. Fit is okay at best. Not nearly as good as my previous Passat. The worst thing about the car is handling. Where my 2014 handled like it was on rails around corners, this one will slide out of a corner in a heartbeat, scary as it can be. The drivers seat is place slightly too far to the right and won't allow a square seating. Room for passengers is excellent. The climate control is very good for the front passenger and driver. The entertainment system is another huge let-down. It uses Android Auto and it has been nothing but a pain. I had it working recently but now it has died yet again. It's such a small display, controls on the steering wheel are useless in conjunction with the working of the phone, so all in all, it's there for looks only. The 1.8 engine is a joke for this size of a car. Even with the turbo, it's just not enough power for city driving. It's great on the road, but for the lack of power, it certainly seems it should get better that 25 MPG on the open road. My dealer is the worst in the business. The dealings with these guys has put me off ever considering another Volkswagen in the future. They've lost me for life.

A decent car except for the Japanese automatic transmission. I owned a 2009 and 2015 Jetta TDI with the DSG transmission and am extremely disappointed with the transmission in the 2017 Passat SE. The upshift from 3 to 4 and the downshift from 5 to 4 are jerky and noisy, unlike the DSG transmission of my two previous Jettas. The transmission anomaly is noticeable when driving gently at the speed limits in small towns but not as bad when accelerating more aggressively when getting up to highway speed. I would not buy this car if you love the smoothness of the DSG transmission in prior VW models. None of the Passat SE models had DSG when I was buying and I did not notice the difference when test driving, so I bought the car assuming that the 6-speed automatic Japanese transmission would be OK. I was wrong. The other minor annoyance is this car does not have park assist (which I don't care about) but I frequently get a notification on the screen that there is no park assist. Why would I want to know this when I don't have it? I will be trading in this car when VW decides to add DSG to the Passat SE line. The only model that has DSG at this time is the gas guzzling Passat SEL and the tradeoff isn't worth paying royalties to oil companies that have inflated prices at a time of historically low demand for fuel.

What we paid for this model was only slightly higer than our 2001 Passart. However, they cut back the warranty, changed the dash lights to whiteish, and it seems there are no drip edges over the doors, we got a small puddle on the seat when we opened the doors in the rain. Otherwise the Tech option give you a bunch of toys! Even if some cost money like Car-net, and XM radio. But the car overall is great, with the tech stuff it makes the car fun and the handleing is totally German, so is the quality. Everything fits perfectly! Oh, they also cut out option choices, you get the package of each model and that's it. If you want to cut out the Sat radio and get Park assist instead with a regular radio, it's not gonna happen, what's on the advertisements and the sticker is what you get. And as everywhere today there isn't much haggling on the price, they have their sales and you get a little off that, then they'll add in maintenance and paint protection and tir warranties and they get their full price. Then there was the SEL with lane departure and Park assist for only a couple thousand more!

I've had this car for 2 days. So far I love it. The only thing I wish it had, was a sliding arm rest. I'm 5ft, and have the seat all the way forward to reach the peddles. I like to lean a bit over and rest my arm when I'm driving. I have to drive with both hands now. LOL.

While looking for a car that was big enough for our new incoming baby. Easy to get into and out of. Loading a unloading a car seat was a big deal for us. Also I am over 6' and 240lbs so I wanted something the wife could drive and I could also easily get into. The Passat meets all of those things all while having massive rear seat room, and huge trunk. While the v6 is faster and I wanted that badly. I couldn't make myself pay for it. So instead with the massive aftermarket the VW cars have. I was able to lower it 1", to firm up the ride a hair and make it more sportier, put on stickier tires, and added a tune to it. Its fun to drive in the corners, and actually pulls pretty nicely now to red line. All while the being able to have the wife drive it daily and get over 24mpg city and over 33mpg highway and not notice a thing is a different. It's a fantastic family car, and our third VW in a row. We had an 06 TDI Jetta before, then a 13 Passat TDI, and now the 17 Passat TSI. Great cars for eating up miles and being very comfy.

Still loving this car! Only complain is the knob that positions the side mirrors. I'd rather have those arrows that you just have to push to position the side mirrors. I do not like the knobs of this car at all. Everything else is still "loving it!"

I brought it from Avis Car Sales Morrow Ga. They are on point with service and will work a deal with you. The car is a smooth ride owned a honda and toyota but love the pick up in the turbo. It is a clean car. Thanks Avis Team in Morrow Ga.
