I bought this car because it was fun to drive and great looking. There are also lots of safety features that come standard on this vehicle. I loved it until the nightmere began. rear breaks replaced at 30K miles-no warning. 6 different problems with the engine-all once the car was out of warranty. tons of goofy electrical problems-heated seats stopped working, lights on dash burnt out. I felt like i was always taking this car to the shop and spent tons of money maintaining it. I didn't even put many miles on it. If you are thinking about buying this car, PLEASE consider the time and money you will spend to maintain it.

I've had my Jetta for four years with very few problems. I got the bottom-rung model and next time will get the power windows and seat, cruise control and sunroof. After about 80,000 miles the Check Engine light started to come on at odd times with no noticable change in performance. It's reportedly the oxygen sensor. After 105,000 miles, oil changes about every 5,000-8,000 miles, two brake jobs, one tire change and no other maintenance, the car is still getting its factory mileage and performance. I'm very impressed.

I own a 2000 GLX VR6 and still love driving it. After reading many other reviews I am feeling very lucky but worried now. Only a few things have happened to it. My rain sensor stopped working, which was due to a short in the wiring up in the head liner and my armrest latch broke and that is it. I blew a couple speakers or the rivits that hold them in were loose or broken, I forget, but now the rattles are back in 3 speakers. Everthing was covered. I do notice a lot of squeeks and rattles and wind noise with the sunroof. Besides those little things the car has been great to me, specially for the way I drive it(like an arcade racing game).

Just traded in my VW Jetta GLX VR-6 with 254,000 miles on it. I hated to get rid of it but I was getting bored with it. You ask why? Well for one, I was the original owner. With all those mile it kept its good looks, Leather seat were still beautiful, and engine still ran like new. I always hated one thing about the car and it was the 91 octane. Let me tell you this was the best VW I ever owned, but I had to stay on top of the maintenance! I miss here already!

These little cars are perfect for commuting. I've put on 60,000 miles since I purchased it and have only had to service the timing belt and clean the intake system due to diesel soot. I was unsure what to expect for maintenance with a diesel, but I've been very satisfied. This car is too small for a family, but has great pickup when driving solo. Get a manual transmission if you are considering this car - the autos are much slower!

This car started having problems within 3 months of purchasing it. I will never recommend a Volkswagen ever! The airconditioner has broken three times. The heated seat twice. The airbags once. A light has appeared on the dashboard twice. The center console has also broken. This car only has 21,000 miles! Plus now its off of warranty! Do not buy this car!

single person, did not want to pay $10,000 for a 3 series BMW with the larger six. enjoyed the roll on power, especially in 3rd (pulls hard from 15mph to 100mph) vs. always having to keep the RPM's up in some Japanese models. drove several times NY to FL and loved the interior design, monsoon stereo and the brakes. zero mechanical problems. only complaints are that the traction control combined with front wheel drive take the fun out of spontaneous burn outs.

Have had my Jetta for 2 and a half years now, and it has always been great. Even in the accident where the other car was totalled, my Jetta protected me perfectly and was able to be fixed. Still runs great and feels very safe. Only strange thing is it consumes so much oil.

The Scoop on Jettas

We have almost 100K on our Jetta, so far we have had to replace the O2 sensor twice. The doors creak if you don't lube them and BAD gas mileage for an underpowered 4 cylider. We don't get a drop over 28mpg at any speed. For a little car, it's a gas hog. My mother in-laws Buick Park Avenue gets better mileage and has twice the horsepower! The automatic transmission can't make up it's mind what gear to choose or when to shift. Lord help you if you back out of a parking stall and expect to get moving into traffic fast. It won't happen. There is about a 3 second lag before it kicks in.

This car was great until it hit 60,000 miles. The O2 sensor, vaccuum hose, turbo valve, strut mounts (poor design as they always break) all needed replacement and the check engine light is still on! We also replaced the window regulators but VW was nice enough to offer a good faith warranty. The locks don't always work on every door and the temp gauge works when it wants to. Overall this car is a headache but I love driving it when it works. The engine is awesome... too bad the quality of the car stinks and it is not reliable! I am not sure if I would buy a VW again.

The car has performed very well in general, it truly is fun to drive. The oil filter has made oil changes a little inconvienent and the car uses about 1/2 quart between changes. 1st to 2nd gear is rough if you rev it up. The ride is great.

The get up and go in this car is amazing. Riding in this car is just like riding in my mother's cadillac, minus the automatic seats. There are a few problems, my glove compartment fell-apart and the top of the shifting knob keeps falling off (nothing unusual), other than those minor details I have had no problems. I would suggest buying a CPO Jetta before buying any new car falling in the similar price range. Bottom line: almost all the comforts of a cadillac with sport and a decent price. Buy this car!

I have a love hate relationship with this car. Love the way it looks, hate the way it performs. Since day one, nothing but problems, currently working with vofa to try to get it fixed (cat convert anyone?). 10 y. O., just turned 60,000 miles because I'm afraid to take it anywhere for fear I won't get there -- or back home. Cup holders, glove box hinge, arm rest: broken. Currently, bucking like a bronco. Do not buy VW.

car is nice and fast, i'm a big guy (6'4", 235) and i am pretty comfortable in it. the only problem was the multiple window clip failures but i haven't had that happen for at least a year now. the only reason i'm considering getting rid of is for something bigger-family man now. now i'm spoiled the next car has to be able to go at least 125 also.

I love this little car! I bought it from a private individual on Craig's List. Paid $5,700, but then it needed about $1,400 of repairs! But I think it just needed some TLC, and now I absolutely love the car. I like the design, and how smooth it handles in city driving as well as on the freeway. Pretty, sporty, LOVE the sunroof. Easy to park and bop around town!

This vehicle represents the biggest nightmare of my life. I should have known when the transmission failed with 3,000 miles on it that I was in big trouble. 15 major repairs including 3 transmissions later, I find myself waiting to find out why the check engine light went on this time. Volkswagen did absolutely nothing to try to reconcile the piece of garbage that they sold me, and consequently, I will never buy another product from them. I have never gone more than 4 months without needing some sort of major repairs on this car. I will never buy a Volkswagen again.

The 2000 VW Jetta is a nice looking car, fun to drive, gets pretty good mpg BUT do not buy this car if you don't want lots of repairs, very, very frequent and expensive repairs. The timing belt went at about 83,000 and I had to get the entire engine remanufactured. I've also had to replace the alternator, the battery twice and some other usual wear and tear pieces. Also, the front bumper is way too low and it gets ripped off easily. The problem is that VW designed the car to be repairable only at the dealership, therefor, more expensive. All in all, I like the car, maybe the newer models are better, but I do not recommend buying this car, at least not from this year.

After owning this car for five years, 2000-2005 and putting on 130,000 miles, I have to say i miss the car for its performance (modified of course), and the amenities for the price ie heated leather seats sunroof etc. I don't miss the car for its known problems, mass air flow sensor, window regulator clips, coil packs, etc. Overall i believe if i had kept the car stock i wouldn't have that many problems with it, but that wouldn't have been fun! Keep the car bone stock and it shouldn't give you as much problems, but good luck avoiding its known problems!

We have 121,000 miles on 2000 TDI automatic. The car has truly held up well for us and we plan to continue driving at this pace for years to come. Only a few complaints. Front door windows fell inside doors (replaced under warranty). Was surprised about the need to change timing belt so often (40,000 miles w/auto trans). Front bumper cover too low-will pull off if you park too close to curb. Also a little crowded in back seat. Will buy another one!!!

By now we all know that VW has built a car with massive electrical system problems. What I want everybody to know is that when you take this car to service they will try to stick all the expenses on you. For example: two days ago my ABS warning light went on. I have read that this is a common problem with this car. I called the dealer, scheduled service, drove to work, and couldn't get the gear off from park. I Had to tow the car to service. But I was armed with a recall note for the brake switch that seems to be faulty on this model. I found it from this website! But since mine was purchased in '99 (it's a 2000 model) the dealer claimed I'm not covered. We did a little dance (me yelling) and all of a sudden it was covered!

I have destroyed 5 cars now. I really drive my cars hard. This jetta is by far the finest car ive driven. It kicks BMW's ass in everything but quality and gadgets. When i purchased the car the check engine light came on because of the mass air flow and turbo cutoff switch, dealer fixed everything under warranty. car was in dealer for 2 days. dealer explained to me how you have to use 91 octain fuel to protect the sensors and components. Since ive followed the fuel requirements i have been nothing but 100% impressed with this car. It hugs the road like a 60k+ sports car and the 150hp 1.8L turbo acts like a compariable 3.0 v6 without the low gas mileage

My car belt just went the other day and the cost was about $400 to replace the belt. This took 3 days, so I had to rent a car, another $100. Total cost was $500 to fix the car including rental charges. My check engine sensor has broken again for the 3rd time. Currently, the passenger side lock does not go all the way up, so I have to keep pressing unlock once or twice for it to go up all the way.

We had our Jetta GL since May 2000. We babied this car. My wife loved this car. All maintenance was done on time. Then it starts to use oil. It used about 1 quart per 1000 miles! At first I thought it was a fluke. Then I checked the internet for other owners that may have the problem. This seems to be common with the 2.0 Litre engine. I even found a web site that has the Technical Bulletin (provided to dealers from VW)that instructs the mechanic how to deal with complaints of excessive oil consumption.

Love it! What else is there to say? The 1.8 liter gets the gas milage I like, but the turbo makes sure that I'm not the slowest thing on the road. Handles the road just like my Porsche 944. The parts aren't cheap, but you don't have to buy them often. Watch the oil changes. Dirty oil clogs the turbo.

I was so psyched to have gotten a Jetta. It looks cool, has a snappy pick up, and a great stereo. But I was disappointed. The random play on multiple disc changer never worked, manual seat backs difficult to adjust, handle for the glove box fell off, driver's door inside handle peeling, back seat drink holder broke second time used. Have had nothing but trouble since warranty expire. Both window lifts broke and the locks are still messed up from the shotty repair. The engine light continues to go on and off at random. And it's currently in for repairs of unknown origin. Terrible, terrible service. Can't wait to dump it and get something reliable!

I bought my 2000 Jetta VR6 GLX in 2002. It has been in the shop all the time. It stalls spiratically, and no dealership or independent shop knows how to fix it. Engine Workshop Light and Emission Workshop lights always go on; I take it to the shop, and the code the car gives is wrong. The window fell one day and had to be replaced, along with the underside of my bumper. Regardless of all the machanical problems, it is a fun car to drive when it runs. Great interior.

My car was in service 17 times in 2 years. Couple times they kept the car for 4-5 days, because they do not have parts (?!) and need to consult factory engineers (?!). Engine malfunctions, oxygen sensors, water pump, multiple electrical problems, security system failure - all "excitements" of going to service almost every month + endless hours in a way trying to get some answers from Vw service. With very appealing interior, it's very poor quality makes this car absolutely unreliable. Please, do not make your life miserable - do not buy Jetta.

Buyer Beware!I have a 2000 Jetta GL and Sadly,I must say that this will be my last!At 24K miles, the temperature gauge stopped working. When I asked the dealer about it,they said it would cost $90 bucks JUST to hook the car up to their "computer" to see WHY it was happenning! Also, around 20K miles, the car's suspension(they think)started making a loud "sqeaking/crunching" sound whenever I turned right,or took a corner while breaking. My rear breaks were shot at 22K, and after only normal driving. My check engine light and ABS light go on and off for no reason. The radio controls are inconveniently located too low to the floor.

Never have I been soooo disappointed with a car. 5 O2 sensors and 2 mass air flow under warrenty. Now the warrenty is gone and I am looking forward to service visits every six months on my dime. Car has burned 1qrt every 1000- 1500 miles since new. No offer of assistance from VW. Made the huge mistake of buying a 2002 Passat for our second car. Same type of problems and same lack of customer service. Should have stuck with my Ford Escorts. Much cheaper and never had any problems with the three I owned.

The thing that I have found about this car is that you get out of it what you put in to it. If you take care of it and maintain it properly, you will have a fun to drive and reliable car. If you abuse and knock around your cars and expect them to work like a Swiss watch - you'll be better off with a Honda. I have had my share of annoying little problems with this car (failed sensors, broken glove box door that snapped in 10 degree weather, etc.) but nothing in the past 30,000 miles. I would highly recommend a Jetta to anyone who is a car enthusiast looking for a fun to drive small car with a German engineered feel with lots of standard features.

I have had my 2000 1.8T Jetta (manual) for four years now and it has been a good experience. I have seen the bad ratings and heard the talk about it being a problem car - but there are no complaints here. Other than a few wrinkles ironed out under warranty during the first year, the car has been fine. The car now has over 60,000 miles and still rides and handles nicely. The excelleration is still there, too!

I have had the same problems as the other reviewers but my complaint is the paint and interior plastic components. The exterior paint around the door handles shows scratch marks. The scratches aren't caused by a key, just simply from my own fingernails...and I don't have long nails. The interior plastic cover around the radio and climate control also scratches very easily.

My jetta has always had problems. The front bumper fell off frequently. Stan Olsen wanted to charge me over $900 to fix it each time. It was very hard to find someone to work on a Volkswagen. Also, my transmission went out at 60,000. When I called Volkswagen, they were not at all concerned about the quality of their car. I would not recommend this car to anyone.

I was so excited to buy a new vw, but that excitment faded quickly. The coils in the engine are defective. Volkswagen will only replace them as they crack so you are forced to send your car to the dealership everytime it breaks down. They do give you a rental but I had a rental for over 2 months because they had so many problems with other cars that the coils where on back order. This was not the service I was expecting from vw. I also had been complaining about my drivers side window having problems and they said there is another manufacture problem but they will not fix the problem untill the window actually breaks and slides down into the door.

My favorite car I've ever owned so far. I'd keep it indefinitely (unusual for me) if the gas mileage was better. I'd return to VW if they can get the mileage up!
