Many Problems!!!!!!!!
At 37k the AC compressor went out, the air bag light stayed on and the AC panel light went out. At 40k I had the windshield replaced because it was basically raining in the car from a hole in the winshield under the dash. At 56k the aux fan went out and the trunk light went out. I had yellow stuff coming from under the doors but I guess its all gone now. I noticed a grunting sound went turning corners and going over speed bumps at low speeds. That was amazingly fixed with a wheel alignment??? Go figure. The cup holder is on by hanging by 1 hook. The only reason I'm keeping the car is because it's paid for and I like the way it handles.
reliability?
This word doesnt exist in VW dictionary, before buying one of these talk to the VW mechanic - take him out to lunch. This vehicle is nothing but problems: windows,C02 sensors, gas fuel leaking, rattling, squeling, check engine light lives its own life on/off,

almost but not quite
cars in the begining was great until the problems. Extremly cheap parts with a heafty price tag. If your like the excitement of the car outweight my judgement, Anyone know of the crazy sound from the exhaust??? Anyway if you are looking for a lot of features for half the price got car... If you can afford the repairs and there will be some.. but I sold one and bought the exact same car again... Call me a sucker but i love the overall excite and features of the car....
Don't Buy One!!
My father sold us the vehicle because we needed a reliable car and this one has had no problems. Before he sold it to us he had the 40000 mile service performed. Since then we have had the car back in the shop 3 times for over $250 each time (o-ring in air conditioning, brake light, stabilizer bearing, brake light sensor) and now the master cylinder (brakes) is out and they want over $500! They act as if it's my fault and, of course, nothing is covered by warranty. I will never purchase a VW again!!!
Still Runs Like New After 75,000 miles
This car has run great since the day I bought it. Only one trip to the service center for a faulty sensor. I would highly recommend the VR6. Fast and Fun.
Audi for the People
Over all, I am more than satisfied with my Jetta. I live in Colorado, so power in little cars is scarce, but my Jetta climbs in the mountains without making a fuss. Yah, I wish I had the 1.8T because of the lack of acceleration (still smokes Civics), but for the money, you get a lot with the GL. Most of the bells and whistles found only as options on other cars are standard and as far as a luxurious feel, Nissan, Toyota, and Honda take a back seat. My only gripe is that my dealership used a cheap 'clear-bra' and it's starting to fade and they won't accept responsibility since the company that installed them went bankrupt.
Such potential, but fails to deliver!
My car has less than 36k miles and has had several problems: cracked windshield washer fluid container, defective 6 disc CD changer jammed driver side window, the same window fell from the track and crashed inside the door panel months later, short in the heating device of the side view mirrors, short circuit in the main radiator fan causing my engine to overheat, failure of my oxygen sensor causing my "emisions workshop" engine warning light to illuminate. A problem that persists even today without satisfactory resolution, broken power steering hose, Broken left and right tire rods-neccesitating a wheel alignment, defective water
Good car overall
This vehicle is a great one with some minor flaws that would greatly inhance it. The seats are so uncomfortable, no rear seat room, drink holder gets in the way of the radio. I love my car but, VW needs to revamp the Jetta's design totally and add a little more luxurious features to it.
Check Engine Light
Not tightening the gas cap enough, moisture in the air, wrong oil, wrong gas, when it feels like it light. That's what I call it. You would have thought I would have learned from the first VW I bought, but oh no, I bought a second one. What a waste of money. A lot of money. 3rd time is not the charm in this case. I will never buy another VW, warranty or not.
my car
I have had my car for a while now, and the attention to detail that VW has put into the car amazes me everyday. The features theat the car has is great, from heated seats to self adjsting mirrors, to automatic windshield wipers. THE car is perfect, the R6 engine sounds great but it does comsume a whole lot of gas. I average about 20- 25 miles a gallon.
Poorly built
This vehicle has tons of tech bulletins for costly repairs. Our problems in the first 25k miles include: **Bad Clear Coat, damaged first week of ownership - fixed after complaining to vw a few times. **Engine knock/tic that is reduced with an oil change every 2-3k miles. **Musty Smell coming from padding under carpet - told it is an $850 fix related to this poorly built car **Sway bar link came loose at 22k miles. **Rear brakes on this stick shift down to 10% after 18k miles. Front brakes are at full padding.
jetta 1.8t
this is the most fun i've had driving a car since my old GTI. upgrade the turbo with a simple 10 minute chip upgrade and now you've got 200hp in a $19,000 car.
I'd never buy another VW
I've had more problems with this car than any I've ever owned. I bought it new and the Check Engine light has been on more often than it's been off. The driver and passenger window have fallen through the door 3 times (the last 2 VW paid for). The O2 censor and Mass air flow censor have been replaced 8 times. The right rear brake calliper has gone out twice. It has electrical problems out the wazzoo. Expensive to repair and constantly needs repair. Germans over-engineered it to a fault. Interior falling apart. "leather" comes off door handles, glove box broke from normal use. Replaced hazzard switch (before it was recalled). All in all very bad car experience.
Dream car turned money pit
I purchased this car new with 12 miles on it. The car ran great for the 1st 3 years. My problem 1st started with an o2 sensor that was replaced in the 1st year of ownership-and my cup holder was replaced twice and the 3rd one broke but was not covered by the warranty. My glove box handle also broke off not to mention the arm rest broke. Then in '04 the j-joint snapped and caused the steering to fail. '05 I had to replace a cracked oil pan. Then in '08 the radiator blew ($500.00). Then the timing belt fell off, smashed the power steering pumu and wrapped around the tension arm ($750.00 w/o a new $350.00 tension arm) I've had 2 batteries, re-replaced the 02 sensor and today my car won't start.
A very tight ride!
I experience a couple of the "usual" minor problems that plagued the Jetta: window that fell into door, and air flow sensor, both were warrantied, and neither happened again. VW service was excellent.
I don't know if I'd recommend this car!
Initially, I have to admit that I was more happy of owning my Jetta; afterall, it is a VR6/GLX! However, after driving it for just a year, or let's say 12,000 miles later its computer system strated to get weired on me. I did not appreciate having to bring it in for service three times to the shop within an extent of 4 months! Well, that's not all. The electronic windows started to malfunction both the passenger and driver side. Huhhh...I'm fed up of this crap. Poor quality control is obvious. I hope that the German engineers who developed the Jetta had put more thought into quality check.
genuinely defective
bi have had so many problems with my jetta that i feel like a horrible person selling it to some one else. i have had numerous mechanical problems, some that i have had several times. these problems are occuring because volkswagen made a subpar machine with a faulty computer system that keeps breaking. i would have never imagined that a new car would give me so many problems--problems with door locks, truck not latching, window stuck down, factory installed radio dying after two years, brake sensors replaced almost annually, coolant system sensor, faulty lock cylinder, and sadly even more.
Love the Mileage
Fantastic mileage with the diesel engine!!! Best in class. Problems: 1. The coolant sensor died @ 35000 miles & that is not covered by the warranty. 2. Clear coat on the hood is poor and is easily eaten away by dead bugs. 3. Passenger side door lock actuator does not always open all the way. Have been waiting for a replacement for 6 months.
Good car.
This was a very reliable car. At 50,000 miles, there are absolutely no problems. It was a little short on power, and I wish it had tiptronic, but overall, it is a cheap, reliable car.
I'd Buy it Again!
Have had only one problem, the brake booster failed at 43,000 miles. The dealer fixed it on the first visit. This vehicle is extremely economical, while being fun to drive, also. It can also be repaired by a good mechanic unlike some of the hybrid models out today, and you don't ever have to reaplace expensive battery packs.
Jetta Review
Vehicle is fun to drive and performs well. The downside is the higher dollar maintenance cost.
Great VW
Just traded in my VW Jetta GLX VR-6 with 254,000 miles on it. I hated to get rid of it but I was getting bored with it. You ask why? Well for one, I was the original owner. With all those mile it kept its good looks, Leather seat were still beautiful, and engine still ran like new. I always hated one thing about the car and it was the 91 octane. Let me tell you this was the best VW I ever owned, but I had to stay on top of the maintenance! I miss here already!
Am I Lucky??
I own a 2000 GLX VR6 and still love driving it. After reading many other reviews I am feeling very lucky but worried now. Only a few things have happened to it. My rain sensor stopped working, which was due to a short in the wiring up in the head liner and my armrest latch broke and that is it. I blew a couple speakers or the rivits that hold them in were loose or broken, I forget, but now the rattles are back in 3 speakers. Everthing was covered. I do notice a lot of squeeks and rattles and wind noise with the sunroof. Besides those little things the car has been great to me, specially for the way I drive it(like an arcade racing game).
1.8T over any other small car
I have had the car now for 2 months. It has been great, I have had no mechanical failures, etc... I bought it used and it had 30000 miles on it. My dad says it is just as fun to drive as his BMW 330 and it get milage!
Going, Going, Gone!!!!!!!!!!!! TDI
Titles explain everything in some cases. I have had nothing but problems with this car from day one. I purchased it with great intentions of saving on yearly fuel costs. The money I saved in fuel I have certainly made up replacing window regulators, o2 sensors, wiring harn, ect. Not to mention the number of hours trying to find someone to fix it. Five dealers in UT, none that can fit you into their busy schedual. That must say something about haw many are being serviced.
Luv it
My husband & I love my Jetta. It's Sporty, quick & reliable with an awsome sound system. Great for people or couple's without kids. The backseat is kinda small for passengers. I mainly have it to commute to work. The backseat folds down for x-tra cargo space. My V6 has a ton of power. My husband calls it the sports car. When given the choice on which car to take on a trip, we have always chosen the Jetta.
Don't buy a Volkswagen!
This car started having problems within 3 months of purchasing it. I will never recommend a Volkswagen ever! The airconditioner has broken three times. The heated seat twice. The airbags once. A light has appeared on the dashboard twice. The center console has also broken. This car only has 21,000 miles! Plus now its off of warranty! Do not buy this car!
Jetta
I have had a very rewarding experience with my car. It achieves 28-30 mpg on premium unleaded. It has incredibly firm and comfortable seats that are appropriate for even the longest drives. The engine is very low maintenance (and very smooth and quiet). Most engine fluids don't need to be changed often. My VR6 is on a 10,000 mile synthetic oil cycle, and it doesn't use even one drop during that time. I'm very impressed with the thoughful engineering that went into this car, and its ability to drive long distances with ease. I believe this can be attributed to its large wheels, large motor, and 5 speed manual transmission.
Seriously Consider before you buy!!!
I was so happy when I bought my Jetta! It was a great car until around 24,000 miles. The check engine light began coming on and every time I took it to the dealer they said they fixed it but several days later it came on again. This happened multiple times and the people at the dealership (Airport Auto, Santa Maria, CA) were extremely rude and made me feel stupid and tried to say that they couldn't find any problems, although the light was coming on!! BAD SERVICE! VW of America was much help either.
What was i thinking....
I love VWs I really do. And then I got one. It has been nothing but problems. I have finally stepped out of denial. The check engine light has been on for three years. You name it, I've had it done. The warrenty has more than paid for itself! I think I've had $8,000 worth of work done on it. I had the infamous window drop problem, faulty locks, peeling rubber/leather, a constantly broken cup holder, console, seat adjuster. It is time for this car to go. Maybe one day they can get me back - I hope so.
Great Car
I often read about problems with Jettas but I love mine and consider it very reliable. The only seriously annoying thing to date was when the window clips failed on the driver's window at about 55,000 miles, and the dealership fixed it without charge. The brakes seem to wear out a bit faster than they should, but I get great gas mileage for a V6 and the car is solid.
Perspective ... I hope this helps someon
I bought this car in February of 2000. A year or so later, the check engine light went on. Just this morning my car started smoking on the middle of the highway. I can understand the faulty sensor, but I believe I have a very big issue today. For a car to have such a problem in 2 1/2 yrs refelcts badly on VW. They have major reliability issues. Yes, this car has many good features, ie, handling, roof, heated seats, looks, stereo. Some bad ones, ie, gas mileage, high price, faulty sensors, and ??? (My car is in the dealership right now for it). From an economic perspective, there are much better choices. From a fun perspective, I believe it is above average
Stylish Small Car
I bought my Jetta used with 54,000 miles on it and I now have 72,000. It burns a little oil, but that isn't a big deal to me. It has proven reliable, I haven't had any electrical issues. Its gas mileage has been around 26 in town and up to 37 on highway 5 in CA. I love this car. I think most of the people complaining about it expected a bargain Mercedes, which this car is not. It is, however, a excellent small car alternative if you are tired of the vanilla vehicles coming out of Japan. Reliability-wise I had more problems with my 1997 Mazda 626 (3 O2 sensors). My one breakdown was mechanic related (non dealership)... He didn't tighten plug #3 and it exploded into the cylinder. I replaced the plugs, and it runs like a champ!
Unsatisfied
I was an owner of a 4 cyl. auto. Toyota Corolla for 10 yrs. I had to trade it in because it was burning oil and just getting tired but it was very good to me. I should have stuck with Toyota but the Jetta seemed like fun and it had a solid body. I switched over and purchased a 4 cyl. automatic Jetta. I have only owned it for 6 months...it is burning oil, shifts very roughly (jerks you forward) and is running very rough. I am extremely dissapointed. Now I have car payments (I didn't mind taking on) but I also am running into repair bills in the near future. DO NOT purchase one of these vehicles. I am going back to Toyota!!!!
My problems
First the good news, VW has decided that the mass airflow sensor is covered by the powertrain warranty ($350 you won't have to spend every 3 years or so). I have also had problems with tie rods, coil packs, and the windows in hot weather(not wanting to roll back up). I've had problems with dealership service in New England, but my dealer in Virginia was great. Overall, not a bad car, but it has gotten considerably more expensive than I expected.
Fun but always broken
This car was lots of fun to drive and I had an extended warranty, or else I would have ditched it. It always had body parts breaking. The electrical system was always having shorts (one time it went crazy and my trunk kept popping open while driving, blinkers worked only sometimes, doors locked on their own, etc). Endless mechanical parts were replaced. I hated the feeling I got when a new warning lit up on the dash. Just before the warranty expired I had to be towed. All of this happened before it even reached 91,000 miles. If I hadn't owned a Fiat 27 years ago, which showed me how truly bad a car can be, I would have been tempted to give my Jetta an even lower reliability score than I did
becareful!!!
I had three major oil leaks, was under warranty and was fixed. window fell in on both driver and passenger side, seatbelt in back *middle one* is stuck and wont get loose, center cupholder is broken, back cup holder is broken, oozing stuff out by the front doors, cd changer reads *cd error*. most problems have been fixed by VW. car has 65000 now, and it uses 5 quarts of full synthetic oil *4.99 per quart* in less then two months! friend works for vw told me to take it in and if they can't fix it, to get rid of it! i have 900mi left on warranty, we'll see!
First VW
The car has performed very well in general, it truly is fun to drive. The oil filter has made oil changes a little inconvienent and the car uses about 1/2 quart between changes. 1st to 2nd gear is rough if you rev it up. The ride is great.
Great car, would buy another
I boughtmy 2000 Volkswagen Jetta GLS VR6 in early 2004, at the time it had 38,000 miles on it. I now have 65,000 miles, and am pleased to report I am happy with this car. I did have the notorious coil pack failure a while ago, and the cold-glove-box issue, but other than these I've only done routine maintenance (oil changes, etc).
german style
i love my vw so much that I just cant stand it i am a teen and it peels right ut of those corners like crazy. If i had a coice to pick any car in the world it would be this one.
VW losing their touch
Do yourself a favor and don't buy a jetta. My VR6 has been in my family since it was purchased in 2001 (it's a 2000). I paid my brother 5,000 for the car in 2005 which was a steal (or so I thought). As of now, in 2009, i've spent almost 5,000 fixing it. I'm a regular at the shop. I've replaced, like many other Jetta owners, sensors, breaks (way too often), water pump, clutch, struts, some more sensors... The glove box and cup holder broke within the first two years of use (Can't Germans even engineer a cup holder?). All in all, from sensors to cup holders, it's not much more than faulty junk.
Erin's review
I have a love hate relationship with this car. Love the way it looks, hate the way it performs. Since day one, nothing but problems, currently working with vofa to try to get it fixed (cat convert anyone?). 10 y. O., just turned 60,000 miles because I'm afraid to take it anywhere for fear I won't get there -- or back home. Cup holders, glove box hinge, arm rest: broken. Currently, bucking like a bronco. Do not buy VW.
Love my Jetta
Have had my Jetta for 2 and a half years now, and it has always been great. Even in the accident where the other car was totalled, my Jetta protected me perfectly and was able to be fixed. Still runs great and feels very safe. Only strange thing is it consumes so much oil.
I love my Jetta!
I love this little car! I bought it from a private individual on Craig's List. Paid $5,700, but then it needed about $1,400 of repairs! But I think it just needed some TLC, and now I absolutely love the car. I like the design, and how smooth it handles in city driving as well as on the freeway. Pretty, sporty, LOVE the sunroof. Easy to park and bop around town!
So far, so good
Love my car. Had it over two years now, and no major problems beyond mass airflow sensor which was replaced under warranty. Looks new, fun to drive and I get many compliments on it. Still under 16K miles though and kept in a garage. Road noise is a bit on the loud side.
I had high hopes, but...
The 2000 VW Jetta is a nice looking car, fun to drive, gets pretty good mpg BUT do not buy this car if you don't want lots of repairs, very, very frequent and expensive repairs. The timing belt went at about 83,000 and I had to get the entire engine remanufactured. I've also had to replace the alternator, the battery twice and some other usual wear and tear pieces. Also, the front bumper is way too low and it gets ripped off easily. The problem is that VW designed the car to be repairable only at the dealership, therefor, more expensive. All in all, I like the car, maybe the newer models are better, but I do not recommend buying this car, at least not from this year.
Love Hate Relationship
After owning this car for five years, 2000-2005 and putting on 130,000 miles, I have to say i miss the car for its performance (modified of course), and the amenities for the price ie heated leather seats sunroof etc. I don't miss the car for its known problems, mass air flow sensor, window regulator clips, coil packs, etc. Overall i believe if i had kept the car stock i wouldn't have that many problems with it, but that wouldn't have been fun! Keep the car bone stock and it shouldn't give you as much problems, but good luck avoiding its known problems!
Great Car!!!
We have 121,000 miles on 2000 TDI automatic. The car has truly held up well for us and we plan to continue driving at this pace for years to come. Only a few complaints. Front door windows fell inside doors (replaced under warranty). Was surprised about the need to change timing belt so often (40,000 miles w/auto trans). Front bumper cover too low-will pull off if you park too close to curb. Also a little crowded in back seat. Will buy another one!!!
VW - Service is Horrid
Fun car to drive, 5 spd, Diesel - real miser on the fuel - HOWEVER, once your warranties expire, nobody will help you. You become a leper. Electric window broke twice to $300 a pop. Electric trunk lock $180, Glove compartment $180. Cheap Mexican trash. I bought a Santa Fe - It Rules.
Awesome car! best ive ever owned
i have owned this car since new and it has given me nothing but good experiences, it has never left me on the side of the road and I've never had any problems with the engine or parts. It provides me with great gas mileage and they are very comfortable inside and for long trips. It has very smooth driving too. No problems and very reliable.
