My Jetta is smooth riding & has great pick me up. The trunk space is bigger than I expected and the stereo is awesome. The only downfall is gas mileage. Only about 18-20 miles per gallon. I have to fight my husband for the keys! He calls it "the sports car".

Bought a used 2000 VW Jetta as my daughters first car...reliable, sporty, and still holds up in appearance and style with todays latest new car models. Very reliable and runs strong despite the 156Kmiles!! This car is built very well, all windows, sunroof, cup holders, visor clips, and other interior and exterior features still work and are made of high quality materials....

Love my little vw!

I just bought this car a couple months ago. My Mustang was totaled and I had to find something fast. I had a 85 Jetta in the early 90's and loved it, and my Mom's 76 Rabbit was passed down to me in the late 80's as a teenager so I love Volkswagons. This Jetta handles grades like a champ. I had four people and luggage in it and it climbed a mountain that cars usually overheat on with no problems, never even had to downshift into 4th gear. For the few of you I read about the noises from the front end. Well, mine had that also. Check the bolts in your sway bars. My bolt was hanging half out and there was thudding in the front end from that. Inside cup holder is also broken.

My only bad experiences have been due to a faulty air flow sensor and the dealer sold me on a bad extended warranty. Other than that the car has been mostly great. I do however have some reservations about the automatic transmission mated to the TDI because occasionally it does seem to really hunt for the proper gear.

The problems through 29k miles: - 3 oxygen sensors - front window regulator failed - horrible tires w/ no grip - car goes into Drive from Reverse VERY slowly - rear brake pads GONE (I verified this myself) after 25k miles - weak A/C, already re-charged once (less than 3 years) - industry's shortest door-to-door warranty (2 yrs? 24k miles???) - tranny - car didn't shift out of 2nd gear last winter, repair covered under warranty (thank goodness) Unfortunately, at least in my case, you really do get what you pay for. There's a reason this isn't a $30K car, it behaves like a $16k car.

Matt's 00 Jetta Review

I love the car. No major complaints, just a few minor ones. The cupholder is terrible. It's flimsy and rattles all the time, whether it's pushed in or extended. It does not expand to fit other sizes of cups. The transmission (auto.) is also a little screwy. Frequently, when slowing down for a stoplight, it will suddenly drop to 1st gear, propelling me forward. A minor annoyance, but sometimes I just don't like the way it shifts. However, the car rides very nicely, is quite comfortable; even though I'm six feet tall, I still don't feel terribly cramped. There is not much room for average-sized humans in the back, though.

Electrical problems, brake problems, windows coming off tracks constantly, starting problems, annoying knocking that you eventually learn to ignore. Please don't take the chance.

Definitely NOT the experience of owning two Hondas. Oxygen sensor problem at 40K, car burned oil for first 24K miles, still occasionally burns oil, bad suspension caused premature tire wear, very poor paint -- scratches too easily. Poorly designed front bumper, held on by plastic clips that pop off easily. Catch a high curb and it will come right off. VW of America was less than cooperative. Not recommended AT ALL. The dealerships were very good at "going to bat" for you and getting coverage.

I have owned this car for over 6 years now. At 145,000 miles it is still going strong. It's as much fun to drive as the day I bought it. The only repairs I have had to make were on an oxygen sensor which was covered under warranty and a power steering fluid leak (likely related to an accident). Great gas mileage, fun little car. Also, more space in the back than some of the small SUVs. Also, I can safely say that the safety features are very effective- I've been hit twice - once causing over $4,000 in damage to the car, and never had a scratch on me. Highly recommend the Jetta.

Jetta window problems

Window regulators on power windows fail causing the window(s) to fall into the door. VW has not issued a recall on these parts even though they are aware of the problem. From what I have read, consumers have been reporting this failure on Jettas for several years. Replacing the window regulators can be a costly repair. My passenger window failed twice within 10 months. Regulator kits were on national backorder. The car window was unsecured for over a week. Experienced very poor service.

The Pros: The car drives smooth and handles well. The blue & red interior lighting scheme makes you feel as if you're in a spaceship. The Cons: The interior moonroof liner broke the day after I got the car. The driver door window fell into the door. The whole window cranking mechanism had to be replaced. The plastic glove door & the center console broke off. The moonroof leaks. The a/c doesn't work at all. And there is a mysterious problem with the cat. converter & sensors. Replaced all and STILL getting the check eng. light. Diagnostics keep saying it's a random code, no real problem. Right. TRY to pass inspection with the light on. Not in NY baby! Now I have frost on inside windshield.

I've now had my 2001 Jetta Wolfsburg 1.8t for a year. I really can't say enough good about this car. Quality has been great. The best part of this car, though, is its performance. It is a blast to drive. It is quick, nimble, graceful and smooth as silk. Save your money. Try the Jetta turbo for just as much fun as an Audi or BMW.

The Jetta I have driven for the last 9/10 years has been good to me overall. That said, I would not buy another Volkswagen the next time I purchase a car. It is a sharp looking vehicle, fun to drive, and very comfortable. My issues have mainly been with the quirkiness of mechanical instruments and engine parts. I think you could find a Japanese car for the same money and find better reliability. Common issues include replacing the following: Water pump (impeller is plastic on original and designed to fail; eventually the inside of it melted and had to be replaced. The catalytic converter needed replacing (warranty is 10yr/120K miles FYI). And various other check engine lights etc.

Mixed feelings about Jetta

My Jetta, bought in 01/2000, now has 35,000 miles and I've had SO many problems with it: window falling into door, yellow goo leaking from doors, knocking (esp. in cold weather), shifter jams in 1st and reverse, CD player malfunctions, turn signals don't work in cold weather, windshield sprung a huge crack while I was sitting at a stoplight. This car is the most fun and well designed vehicle I've ever driven, but the logical part of my brain would *not* let me make this mistake again.

What a huge disappointment this car has been. I've had it in the shop for the radio/stereo/CD player alone a minimum of a half dozen times (and they've never given me a loner). Now, just outside of the warranty (on a 3 year leased car mind you), my 'mass air flow system' (or something like that) goes. MD emissions thing? Anyway, $500 out of my pocket. VW of America's Customer Service sucks. Don't even try talking to them - they're useless. The whole reason I bought a new car is so I didn't have to spend my days in service department... What a disappointment!

I have had my Jetta for barely over a year and love it! I enjoy driving my little car, but it's not fun to pay for when something breaks down. My catalytic converter came lose and thankfully I can weld the shield back on, but to get a new one would cost around $800 bucks!! I keep having to get oil leaks fixed, but for 125,000 miles, the car is still in great condition! I haven't had this much fun driving a car in quite a while! Speakers are almost gone as well, but the car had a FULL SIZE tire in the back when one of mine went flat! Perfect!! Also, the brake light wouldn't turn off after the car was off, but if you take it to VW dealership, it's defective and is replaced for free.

I purchased my 2000 Jetta because of the way it drove and the way it looks. I still love the way it drives and the way it looks, but it's always in the shop. I've had the car in the shop 8 times in the past year. First, the paint peeled on the front bumper. The window has fallen into the door twice, now (it's currently taped up until the new part can be ordered). The engine light came on last week, and the O2 something or another had to be replaced. My cupholder has broken ($75 to be fixed), and now, my center console button has snapped off. It's a piece of junk that I'm going to trade off ASAP.

I rate my Jetta excellent, I've had no problems with this car. My dealership has been wonderful, within the second year the oxygen sensors did fail in the car and they were replaced under warranty. When the part was recalled after I was off waranty the manufacturer notified me, and the dealer again replaced the parts even though I had no problems after the original failure. The car is fun and easy to drive (I highly recommend the manual transmission) and has great fuel economy. My only complaint would be rear passenger space, but then I'm not in the back seat!

This is my second Jetta. I have replaced the water pump, power steering pump (all under warranty), ignition coil and wires (cost $400!). At this point, I only have 30,000 miles on the car and I worry that it will turn into a major nightmare. I have a current problem with a very rough idle and start, but the dealer says there is nothing wrong with it. I love the design, handling and performance, but I am disapointed with the quality. My cupholders, and armrest have all broken and been fixed. My back seat cupoholder is now broken again. My other problem with the car is that it squeaks and rattles a lot....good thing for the nice monsoon stereo.

I owned a 5 speed 2000 Jetta for about 7 years, bought it used with 4,000 miles on it. Overall I was really satisfied; never had any major malfunction and never got a Check Engine light on. Drove it for about 50,000 miles. I actually bought another one but automatic when I passed this on to my wife. Same good experience overall. However, did experience the issues with the locks and windows. Very hard to diagnose and repair. Fortunately got guidance on how to repair them by myself in a VW forum and fixed them all, but was hard nonetheless. It appears to be that after reaching the 8 yrs threshold, soldering joints in the electronics start to fail.

Traded in an SUV for this car when it was 3 years old and had about 30,000 miles. After getting over the initial shock of how tiny the vehicle was, almost everything has been positive since. This is the second-best car my family has owned (the first was a '98 Cabrio). We've had GM, Honda, Toyota, and Mitsubishi, but nothing like the tight handling of the VW. At 135k, still a quiet, smooth ride. We've been through two minivans in the time we've had the Jetta, and it might be time to replace the Jetta next, though it's showing no signs of quitting. Dealt with the CEL for the O2 sensor issue for about 4 years-- but not too much just to ignore. Also had some engine fan issues after 100k.

Driving it out of the dealership was a very happy day...until the car started giving problems at about 26K miles. How convenient, right after the warranty expired. What problems? Window regulators (same window, twice within 5 months of 1st repair), back brakes, bad fuel tank, engine light turning on and off...Need I say more? Now the happiest day of my life will be the day I get rid of that pretty tin garbage can.

No problems to date and from what I read above I should consider myself lucky. VR6 is the way to go if you can afford the extra cash for the larger engine.I find the trunk space somewhat limiting, two sets of golf clubs is about all that will fit. The radio is not great, AM reception for sports shows is extremly poor!

My father sold us the vehicle because we needed a reliable car and this one has had no problems. Before he sold it to us he had the 40000 mile service performed. Since then we have had the car back in the shop 3 times for over $250 each time (o-ring in air conditioning, brake light, stabilizer bearing, brake light sensor) and now the master cylinder (brakes) is out and they want over $500! They act as if it's my fault and, of course, nothing is covered by warranty. I will never purchase a VW again!!!

Over all, I am more than satisfied with my Jetta. I live in Colorado, so power in little cars is scarce, but my Jetta climbs in the mountains without making a fuss. Yah, I wish I had the 1.8T because of the lack of acceleration (still smokes Civics), but for the money, you get a lot with the GL. Most of the bells and whistles found only as options on other cars are standard and as far as a luxurious feel, Nissan, Toyota, and Honda take a back seat. My only gripe is that my dealership used a cheap 'clear-bra' and it's starting to fade and they won't accept responsibility since the company that installed them went bankrupt.

I bought my Jetta b/c it looked good, and it offered many amenities for the price. That's all the VW has to offer. Reliability is absolutely awful. Bad window regulators, bad oxygen sensors, bad battery, front bumper always scrapping, coolant pipe leaks, bad oil consumption, etc. etc. I bought this car for what it offered considering the low price...and after only 2 yrs,I've already put thousands of dollars into repairs, non of which were driver related...all due to faulty, poor parts.

I have had a great experience with this car. I have had it for 2 years and driven it about 27,000 miles. The only problem I had was a plastic vent cover on the lower portion of the front bumper was knocked out while driving. Also I had a flat tire but was quite impressed with the full-size spare and the ease of use of the included (although strange-looking) jack. My car has the five-speed and I personally think it transforms the personality of the car to fun compared to the automatic. I plan on getting another Volkswagen when my lease is up on this car.

I have had troubles with this car from day one. In the 2.5 years I have owned this car, I have had to replace the gas tank, the CD Changer TWICE, the radio, A/C compressor TWICE, power window motor, the entire electrical system, the air-flow sensor, and one of the tail lights. There are rattles in the dash, creaking in the doors, and a thump that comes from the drivers' seat which the dealer says they can't find. ONE WORD: LEMON! Needless to say, I will NEVER buy another VW!

I purchased this car new with 12 miles on it. The car ran great for the 1st 3 years. My problem 1st started with an o2 sensor that was replaced in the 1st year of ownership-and my cup holder was replaced twice and the 3rd one broke but was not covered by the warranty. My glove box handle also broke off not to mention the arm rest broke. Then in '04 the j-joint snapped and caused the steering to fail. '05 I had to replace a cracked oil pan. Then in '08 the radiator blew ($500.00). Then the timing belt fell off, smashed the power steering pumu and wrapped around the tension arm ($750.00 w/o a new $350.00 tension arm) I've had 2 batteries, re-replaced the 02 sensor and today my car won't start.

When I first got my TDI, I loved it, raved about it. The mileage was great and the car looked sharp. Now it's a different story. I've sunk close to $2000 into it in the last 18 months. Everything from an engine temp sensor, to glow plug relay, to brakes. Not to mention the $100 oil changes. I've even had the rear cup holder replaced. Now the temp gauge isn't working and the "check engine" light is on again. I'm sure that will be another $300. I also found out this past weekend while it was in the shop, that one of the glow plugs is seized up and can't be removed. I will never buy a VW again.

Initially, I have to admit that I was more happy of owning my Jetta; afterall, it is a VR6/GLX! However, after driving it for just a year, or let's say 12,000 miles later its computer system strated to get weired on me. I did not appreciate having to bring it in for service three times to the shop within an extent of 4 months! Well, that's not all. The electronic windows started to malfunction both the passenger and driver side. Huhhh...I'm fed up of this crap. Poor quality control is obvious. I hope that the German engineers who developed the Jetta had put more thought into quality check.

Fantastic mileage with the diesel engine!!! Best in class. Problems: 1. The coolant sensor died @ 35000 miles & that is not covered by the warranty. 2. Clear coat on the hood is poor and is easily eaten away by dead bugs. 3. Passenger side door lock actuator does not always open all the way. Have been waiting for a replacement for 6 months.

Well.. I like my Jetta. I bought it in February of 2000. Since then it's been very reliable. I had the maf go and it had to be replaced. I do aftermarket modifications so I was really nervous about things going wrong. The car has done well... the interior rattles alot. The window hasn't fallen but knock on wood.. yeah.. I know it has it's problems.. but how else can you get heated seats, mirrors, washers, european feel and look, super adjustable seats, telescoping wheel and tons of safety features for around 20k? Nowhere.. every car has quirks.. check the safety ratings of a vdub.. and you'll see you are safe riding in one..

Have had only one problem, the brake booster failed at 43,000 miles. The dealer fixed it on the first visit. This vehicle is extremely economical, while being fun to drive, also. It can also be repaired by a good mechanic unlike some of the hybrid models out today, and you don't ever have to reaplace expensive battery packs.

I have had to take the car back to the dealer for every conceivable repair, thankfully all under warranty. This car has had major electrical problems-- the engine, the brakes, the transmission shifter, the windows, etc. It is a nice looking car, and fun to drive (when it is running), but it has been extremely unreliable.

VWs are wonderful cars if you're the type of driver who cares about the vehicle. They're not "basic trasportation" cars. Find a trustworthy earnest mechanic who takes pride in his/her work and while you're doing what you're supposed to as an owner, the mechanic will hopefully help you keep your VW alive for years and years to come. I know whenever I see used cars they are always tons of cars from asia, but very few VWs are on the used car lots.

Titles explain everything in some cases. I have had nothing but problems with this car from day one. I purchased it with great intentions of saving on yearly fuel costs. The money I saved in fuel I have certainly made up replacing window regulators, o2 sensors, wiring harn, ect. Not to mention the number of hours trying to find someone to fix it. Five dealers in UT, none that can fit you into their busy schedual. That must say something about haw many are being serviced.

I was thrilled when I purchased my VW - my 1st NEW car. It didnt last. In the past 2+ years, I have fixed the sunroof, replaced the front tires at 30K due to improper alignment, replaced the rear rotors, the max air flow sensor AND a myriad of other smaller repairs. My side mirror casing cracked 3 mos after buying the car - right on the seam in the plastic -but the dealer refused to cover it under the warranty. I finally traded it in for a Honda, b/c I'm so tired of dropping $500+ everytime I take my VW in for service. The car also runs VERY LOUD, especially on the highway. Yes, it is fun to drive. But if you want reliability, buy something else.

I was so happy when I bought my Jetta! It was a great car until around 24,000 miles. The check engine light began coming on and every time I took it to the dealer they said they fixed it but several days later it came on again. This happened multiple times and the people at the dealership (Airport Auto, Santa Maria, CA) were extremely rude and made me feel stupid and tried to say that they couldn't find any problems, although the light was coming on!! BAD SERVICE! VW of America was much help either.

Many things have been fixed or replaced on this car & only 1/3 was covered under their "warranty". Here are a few of the major things: the speed sensor 2x, throttle body & adjoining parts, the engine fan & it's "computer", the battery exploded-it & took 2 hours to maneuver it out of the awkwardly mounted box, the transmission has had several repairs & the engine light has been reset a few times by the dealer when it comes on for NO reason. I've had 2 recalls, 1 for the seatbelt & 1 for the oxygen sensor. Not to mention all of the little gadgets awaiting repair. This car is just your old- fashioned, plain and simple LEMON and I know I'm not the only one!

I bought this car in February of 2000. A year or so later, the check engine light went on. Just this morning my car started smoking on the middle of the highway. I can understand the faulty sensor, but I believe I have a very big issue today. For a car to have such a problem in 2 1/2 yrs refelcts badly on VW. They have major reliability issues. Yes, this car has many good features, ie, handling, roof, heated seats, looks, stereo. Some bad ones, ie, gas mileage, high price, faulty sensors, and ??? (My car is in the dealership right now for it). From an economic perspective, there are much better choices. From a fun perspective, I believe it is above average
