Dream car turned money pit
I purchased this car new with 12 miles on it. The car ran great for the 1st 3 years. My problem 1st started with an o2 sensor that was replaced in the 1st year of ownership-and my cup holder was replaced twice and the 3rd one broke but was not covered by the warranty. My glove box handle also broke off not to mention the arm rest broke. Then in '04 the j-joint snapped and caused the steering to fail. '05 I had to replace a cracked oil pan. Then in '08 the radiator blew ($500.00). Then the timing belt fell off, smashed the power steering pumu and wrapped around the tension arm ($750.00 w/o a new $350.00 tension arm) I've had 2 batteries, re-replaced the 02 sensor and today my car won't start.
Big Mistake
When I first got my TDI, I loved it, raved about it. The mileage was great and the car looked sharp. Now it's a different story. I've sunk close to $2000 into it in the last 18 months. Everything from an engine temp sensor, to glow plug relay, to brakes. Not to mention the $100 oil changes. I've even had the rear cup holder replaced. Now the temp gauge isn't working and the "check engine" light is on again. I'm sure that will be another $300. I also found out this past weekend while it was in the shop, that one of the glow plugs is seized up and can't be removed. I will never buy a VW again.

I don't know if I'd recommend this car!
Initially, I have to admit that I was more happy of owning my Jetta; afterall, it is a VR6/GLX! However, after driving it for just a year, or let's say 12,000 miles later its computer system strated to get weired on me. I did not appreciate having to bring it in for service three times to the shop within an extent of 4 months! Well, that's not all. The electronic windows started to malfunction both the passenger and driver side. Huhhh...I'm fed up of this crap. Poor quality control is obvious. I hope that the German engineers who developed the Jetta had put more thought into quality check.
Love the Mileage
Fantastic mileage with the diesel engine!!! Best in class. Problems: 1. The coolant sensor died @ 35000 miles & that is not covered by the warranty. 2. Clear coat on the hood is poor and is easily eaten away by dead bugs. 3. Passenger side door lock actuator does not always open all the way. Have been waiting for a replacement for 6 months.
can't beat the 1.8
1.8t is the perfect engine fit for the Jetta. Great gas mileage and performance. The rear seat is just a bit cramped for adults on long hauls. I love the clean lines and night time blue color display. It is a fun car to drive and feels like a big car on long distance drives.
