After my 22 year old son bought his first car, on his own dime that is, my wife and I had to step back and take notice. He had talked about wanting a GTI since middle school and when it came time to trade the 1990 Saab 900 Turbo in that mom and dad had given him to drive through part of high school and college, he jumped at the chance to buy a GTI. His 2013 Wolfsburg edition was a different sort of animal than his Saab was...and it was also a tempting ride for my wife and I. A year after he bought the car, we traded in our 2013 Juke Nismo and picked up a 2018 S model. Since the age of 16, I have owned well over 50 different vehicles, most of them being some type of enthusiast car. From a 1966 Ford Mustang convertible to a 2001 GMC Yukon to a 2006 BMW 325i to a 2012 Fiat 500 Abarth, I've owned something of everything. I have experienced luxury (1992 Mercedes 300 AMG) to the basest car available (1986 Golf with a 3 speed automatic). I've owned slow (Any Isuzu Trooper or Mitsubishi Montero) and I've owned fast (2006 Nissan 350Z or 2001 BMW Z3M). But this GTI trumps them all. And it isn't even close. We bought the base model because it was the cheapest and offered everything we wanted in the car. While we would have loved LED headlights and a sunroof, the difference in price and possible repair cost offset that desire. I took a bath on my Juke when I traded it in, rolling about $2500 in negative equity into the loan...and that was after the down payment. Apparently when a manufacturer announces that a particular model is being discontinued, values plummet, even when that model is the enthusiast version and the most expensive. So one minor nit-pick with the car is that it is on the pricier side of things. But once you drive one, you will know why. The motor in this car is phenomenal. So much torque that you can pull away from nearly any speed in any gear. And speaking of transmission... the 6 speed manual in this car? Like hot butter. Seamless. Perfect. The Juke had a fantastic tranny. Snickety-snick through the gears. The GTI is a step above which I was not sure was possible. It is apparently. With Android Auto, there is no need for XM or navigation on this base model. Just plug your phone in and use the infotainment center to listen to what you want. Navigation through whatever app you want to use is right at your fingertips on the 6.5 inch screen. Heated seats are standard as is a back up camera that folks back into the rear hatch, protecting it from the elements and making it easy to see, even on an icy morning where a regular camera would be iced over or a rainy day when the camera would be smeared with rain water. And those plaid seats? Iconic and comfortable. Though I would normally prefer leather, these cloth seats are incredible. They are supportive, firm and look the part. Overall, this car is the most balanced car I have ever owned. It does everything well. This isn't just a jack of all trades auto, it's a master of all trades. Get This car Immediately (GTI). Seriously. UPDATE: still the best car I've ever owned. 20k miles and counting. Reliable, fun to drive, beautiful... SECOND UPDATE: 52k miles and still in love with this car. 2 recalls and no issues whatsoever. 32mpg average and loads of fun all around. We are nearing the 3 year ownership mark and couldn't be happier. THIRD UPDATE: 60k miles. Still wow. No issues other than the recalls and a stuck fuel injector that might have been bad gas. We love this car.

New GTI Sport is perhaps the perfect GTI
I have owned a number of GTIs, but have to say this is probably the best one ever. The sport is a stand alone model that includes the performance pack, Nogaro alloys (Only on Sport model), bi-xenon/LED lighting, keyless entry/ignition, over the base S model. Plus, Apple play is a great feature negating the need for navigation. For me, and I am sure other enthusiasts agree that this is the perfect model - why? The new MQB platform GTI is a an incredibly well-developed car that drives and handles superbly. The Sport has all the essentials needed without the superfluous toys added in the SE and Autobahn models - this is the enthusiasts GTI. The addition of the Performance packs adds some extra horsepower, but the real bonus of the package is the mechanical limited slip differential which takes cornering on a front-drive car to a new level, and the stopping power of the R brake package. The beauty of the GTI has always been the fact that it is such a versatile and well-behaved car when you want it to be, but when you want to push it to it limits it is in an even happier mode. I love the fact that this car is so capable in so many areas - it may well be the perfect car! 18 months on the car has been 100% trouble free - highway gas mileage is around 35-37 mpg which is phenomenal!

Life is too short to drive a Toyota
I have owned Toyota's pretty much my entire life, i had never given much thought to any other car brand. I would buy one after another, and i would modify them to my liking, but as you get older you have less of a desire to drop another 5K into a new car to make it fun, and once Toyota killed off the manual transmission in nearly everything they make, i was brought to try to find another brand i would like. I drove Hyundai, KIA, Honda, ford, GM, and Fiat, and then i drove the VW. While reliability may be far worse than the Toyota, or Honda, (only time will tell) the VW just feels special. The steering input, the way the shifter feels in your hand, the feedback from the steering wheel as you are downshifting into a tight bend, all make you exited about driving, the car feels well balanced, and you can use your own eyes to see out of it. I fit lumbar into it on the weekends when i go to home depot, it carries my dogs, it's extremely comfortable and easy to drive on the highway, and if you put it in eco mode, and drive it under 80 you can easily get 40mpg out of it. It really is an amazing car.. Mine is a base model with the Performance Package, honestly though, i wish i just bought the base model, it's really just that good of a car, the performance package is really only noticeable on the track. If you don't track the car, skip the PP.

Great daily driver for the car enthusiast
The Autobahn trim of this car is a fun daily driver, which is great for road trips as well. Besides the excellent handling, acceleration and braking, the adaptive dampers offer a smooth, controlled ride. Android Auto is well implemented and almost makes the built-in navigation and satellite radio superfluous. The adaptive cruise and other driving aids are mostly well done, but I wish they had included lane centering assist, instead of just lane keeping assist. Other nice to haves include automatic climate control, a more comfortable 12-way adjustable driver's seat, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror and self-parking. (I was skeptical about the utility of that last one, but it works well and assures I don't get "curb rash" when parallel parking.) Gripes are few: There were a couple of build issues, including a sunroof rattle and a problem with a minor trim piece that fell off, which was addressed by the dealer. While durable, the leather upholstery isn't of the highest quality, either. Overall, I'm very happy with the decision to go with the Autobahn and would recommend it to anyone who can afford the additional coin.

Goft GTI SE / Leather
Bought the vehicle 3 weeks ago. The main reason for the choice is to have a smaller sized car with "peppy / sporty" driving characteristics for the city. The GTI is a fun little car and with the hatchback design still easy to use for storing some bulky items (55" TV in box fit perfect). Particular for city (San Fran) parking it is perfect. I like the acceleration and sportiness. The suspension is on the stiff side and potholes are for sure felt thru the body. Overall very good visibility and easy to get in and out too. 4 people fit nicely into the car. If anyone looks for a sporty compact vehicle I recommend the Golf GTI

The Great Compromise
18-month update - no problems. Flawless daily operation. Still averaging about 25 MPG in mostly city driving although I've gotten 36-38 on one long road trip. The interior still looks brand new and the leather is wearing well. I'm also learning how to manage the DSG in traffic and the bucking that so many people complain about is not nearly as noticeable. Maybe the transmission is also just breaking in? Whatever - I love this car. I'm a hot hatch aficionado. Over the years I've owned several, and when the time came to get out of the family hauler I knew I wanted another. I drove everything: Focus ST, Fiesta ST, Focus RS, Civic SI, Civic Type R, WRX, even hot-ish hatches like the new Cruze and Mazda3. For every criteria that I decided a particular car missed, the GTI landed it square in the middle. It's not as engaging as the Fords, or as sharp as the Honda, or as burly as the Subaru, but it's ALMOST as good, and by being so versatile and generally GOOD while not falling on its face in any one area it wins. I haven't had it long enough to comment on reliability, but CR is indicating the 2017 is Above Average, whereas the 2015 and 2016 models were merely average. Fuel economy is fine, averaging 25 MPG in mostly city driving. And the bottom line is I get excited every time I know I'm about to drive somewhere, even if it's just to slog it out in traffic. At some point I'll have the opportunity to let it its thing. I'll say the trick VAQ differential is a game changer - this car handles like no other FWD car I've ever driven. The DSG is also a bit of a revelation. I'm a manual guy, but my wife isn't comfortable driving one, so the DSG is again a great compromise. The kids' booster seats are also easy peasy, and there's still plenty of space for (minor) Costco runs. Just a great car. Full disclosure, I got my 2017 as the '18 cars were coming out, meaning I got crazy incentives - about $8,000 off sticker. I'd have a hard time paying the $33k they wanted, but it's a steal at $25k. Would buy again.

My fun car
Traded my 2016 GTI S model in to get the 2018 SE version. I loved my 2016 model, had absolutely no problems with it at all. The longer warranty and new safety features on the 2018 model were the primary factors behind my decision to let go of the 2016 version. I really like the new LED headlights and tail lights, the larger brakes and the electronic limited slip differential bring a noticeable improvement over my previous car. I wish that I had upgraded to the summer tires on both cars rather than stay with the stock versions. However I do like the ride and performance of the Hankooks that came on the 2018 car over the Bridgestones that came on the 2016 version. My 2016 car had the manual transmission which I loved but I went with the DSG transmission on 2018 which really is a better fit for me over the long run. While I'm not unhappy with the mpg I am seeing on the 2018 I got about 3-4 mpg better with the manual than I am getting with the DSG transmission. The low speed performance of the DSG is much better than I experienced with earlier versions on Jetta's that our family owned. I had been wanting a GTI for 25 years+ when I got the 2016 model and have not been disappointed with either car. Love taking it for drives on twisty mountain roads but frankly look forward to commuting to the office in it everyday as well. 5600 mile update - still love the car and definitely feel it was right to trade in my 2016 for the 2018 model. I have had no issues with either car. Additional features that the SE model has over the S that I appreciate. The larger touchscreen is a pleasure, the system is very intuitive and easy to master much better than those in many other manufacturers. I'm very happy with the quality of the sound system. The adaptive lighting system is great, high beams are phenomenal, low beam the cut off is sharp and I wish the reach was a bit farther. They are nice and bright and they have a wide spread which helps. Really like the electronic limited slip differential it really makes a difference on twisty roads and driving in the snow. The ride of the 2018 SE model seems to be a bit more comfortable than the 2016 S model. I'm not sure if it's the tires, the extra weight of the SE with the DSG transmission or if VW made some updates to the suspension. Whatever I do like the ride. I've had no mechanical issues, fit and finish still top notch as was my 2016 model. For me the choice to go with the DSG transmission was right. When in heavy traffic I can focus on the traffic and keep both hands on the steering wheel. Then I can switch to manual mode when driving in the countryside on windy roads. The safety features are very appreciated particularly the blind spot monitor and that the windshield wipers automatically turn on, I really like that the car is built solidly you never feel like your in inexpensive vehicle, you always feel like your in a much more expensive vehicle with no compromises. Dislikes not many but... I don't like that every time I start the car I have to disable the auto engine stop feature. I should be able to shut if off permanently. The 2018 model doesn't have the under front seat storage trays that the 2016 model had. I do miss the extra storage as the center console is very small. You really can't drive either models that I've had with the windows down due to excessive buffeting noise inside the car. On the SE model that includes with the sunroof open. Basically, I can only drive with an open sunroof at low speed under 30 miles an hour. For me it's not a deal breaker as I really love the GTI. 17,000 mile update- absolutely no mechanical or electrical issues to date and no problems with the technology on the vehicle nearly 3 years of ownership. 20,000 mile update - still no mechanical, electric or technology issues with this car. The GTI is absolutely a joy. Have newer Honda CRV and Mazda CX-5 which while we enjoy very much but have had problems with the technology in both. The Honda is just not very intuitive as the VW or Mazda. The Mazda had a bad SD card for navigation which was expensive to replace out of warranty. The Mazda Navigation is clunky to use, we don’t have factory Navigation on either the VW or Honda - probably not fair to mention.

The current Ultimate Driving Machine
My Autobahn: leather/heat/power seat, DCC, Nav, and ACC/Blind Spot/Cross Traffic safety features. Got an amazing year-end deal that I could not pass, so I will return my VW TDI earlier than plan. 1k miles total so far in 2 weeks. During past GTI test drives I always thought the ride was a bit stiff, so I decided to get the Autobahn with DCC. That way, I can turn the suspension to a softer mode ("comfort") when needed. Funny, after 2 weeks, I now prefer "sport" mode over regular "normal" or "comfort" mode. The GTI MK7 engine is very smooth as it happily rev up to its red line. Combined with its lightweight, the GTI can quickly and easily pass other cars at highway speed. You can get speeding ticket(s) if you are not careful with this car as it goes from 60 to 80 mph in no time. It makes me wonder what APR stage 1 or 2 mod will turn this car into ? As a manual trans driver in the past, I found the DSG pretty amazing on any street at any speed. I don't understand all of GTI DSG complaints out there. Nobody can shift the transmission as fast and smooth, aggressive when needed, than this smartly engineered DSG. The DSG in my 2013 TDI is good, this one is GREAT. As advertised, GTI returns 29 mpg combined. I am very happy with its safety features, they are excellent and work as designed. The bad news ? quality control is poor for a $36k list car. Back window does not roll up/down, driver door ambient light does not work, back seat bench still have wrapping plastic protrude out from its bottom, and worse, the infotainment system with Nav broke (known issue) after three days - new unit is in ordered. Even though CR predicts below reliability, I'd expected better quality control after almost 2 year of Golf/GTI production in Mexico, very disappointed. My GTI issues are being fixed under warranty. I gave VW GTI 5 stars mostly due to its interior luxury feel (very close to Audi, BMW or Mercedes level), its Ultimate Driving Machine characteristics, and its steep year-end discount. Aside from the quality control annoyances, I have my grin every day driving this GTI.

GTI for an old guy
2017 VW GTI Sport 6 spd manual. 20 months and 31K miles into the car that changed from a weekend driver to a commuter car. 4 oil changes at approx 8K mile interval and she is ready for new tires. The OEM Contis are not very good. However, if you want to smile when driving again, this little GTI does not disappoint. Can get up to 40 plus mpgs if you are not pushing the turbo, or if you are driving spirited you get about 25 mpgs. Flawless so far. Not one mechanical issue. Info system with Android Auto works great! I had the 30K service done this past weekend. Brakes are great, just oil and tires. Would I purchase again? Hell yeah!! When I am stopped and I meet another GTI owner, they always say positive things about the GTI. Choose wisely grasshopper. This GTI is a fun car! 01/17/19 42,000 miles in the GTI and she still kicks butt. Oil changes, new tires, air filters that's it for service. Runs awesome and just a fun car to drive.

Best daily driver under 30k money can buy
This car is a home-run. Turns like it’s on rails, very well planted on the road. Ride is stiff at times, especially on bad pavement... But it's the price you pay for the sporty suspension. Brakes are great. Safety features are great: forward collision mitigation is on point, as is blind spot monitor. Led lights are slick. Interior is luxurious : 8" touchscreen with Apple Carplay, leather seats, soft touch materials. Cabin noise levels are very low. DSG is bliss. Overall it's a very well finished car... Iteration number 7.5 so they have figured out the value proposition really well. Speedwise : it's got enough power to keep you interested, but it's no wild beast like the Golf R or a WRX STI. I'm very happy with the car and look forward to driving it every day. Got the SE because the Autobahn was not worth it to me. Barebones S with the manual is a sweet value proposition you should absolutely consider too. I drove other cars like the Subaru WRX, but went with the GTI due to better incentives and more civilized ride, plus that DSG. The Mazda3 is a good option too, but the GTI is one level above. If you live in an area with very bad pavement, don't get this car, otherwise you'll enjoy every minute. Love this car, gosh. BRB I went for a drive.
Best car I have ever owned
I have owned a 2010 500hp Camaro SS, a 2015 Dodge Charger R/T with all of the gadgets and technology, a luxurious 2014 GMC Sierra Denali, and a rocketship E46 BMW M3. This Golf GTI is far and away my favorite. It is economical, very quick and tunable, handles like it is on rails, has a fantastic interior, and has a great amount of room and storage for a hot hatchback. You can Google the car's metrics and performance data, but at the end of the day, it's how a car makes you feel. This car makes me grin every single time I drive it. Seriously, go take a test drive right now. You're welcome.

16 days of ownership / 1,000 miles driven
Rent this car before buying! Test drive the actual trim multiple times. Make sure you love it because it has a lot of perks but some major annoyances. Overall, I'm stoked about my purchase and I love my new GTI so far. I'm coming from an older Jetta so it feels intuitive and familiar but much nicer than my old VW. The GTI is everything you expect it to be...fast, fun, practical, affordable, and seemingly reliable. It truly is a lovely car. The reviews out there are fairly accurate. The tech package is modern and very nice. The car is sneaky fast and the exhaust notes are great when driving in sport mode. THIS CAR IS FUN!!! Here's what I learned in my 2 weeks of ownership. The leatherette seats are not the most comfortable, especially for long trips. Interestingly enough, I didn't experience the same problem when I rented the base model with cloth seats. I just assumed the leatherette would be nicer and more comfortable...they're not. They just *look* nicer. My biggest complaint is cabin noise. My brand new GTI has more creaks and rattles than my '08 Jetta with 157K miles on it. I took it to the local VW dealership where I purchased the car and the service advisor told me it's the norm with these cars. For a car that looks & drives amazing and costs $28K - $35K, the noises make it feel cheap and not well assembled. After Googling the issue, it is clear that my GTI is not unique. Lots of people out there reporting creaks and rattles with a lack of support from the VW dealerships. I absolutely love the car but would I make the purchase again...I'd probably lease because it doesn't feel like a keeper. On a positive note, the GTI ownership community is pretty amazing. Tons of tips, tricks, and DIY solutions for almost any problem. The aftermarket world is rabbit hole of goodies.

Best Car I've ever bought!
I tend to be a serial car buyer. This isn't a good thing as I'm not wealthy. I've tend to go between sporty cars and trucks/Jeeps. After multiple back surgeries I decided to move away from trucks as I don't need to be loading and unloading things. I have 2 kids in college so being affordable is a plus. My previous vehicle was a 2016 Ram 1500 diesel that was around 50K. Great truck but I was tired of parking it and paying for it. It didn't help that the fuel economy dropped quite a bit after the last update to better meet emissions standards. I had owned a 2013 Fiat Abarth 500. I liked the concept but it was just too small and had a funky infotainment system and a tiny gas tank. That led me to the GTI. I had just bought a Jetta GLI that my wife drives. I really liked that car. The GTI is similar but a lot better. I got a red manual SE without the lighting package for a little over 26K. It has leather and the Fender audio system. I am about 7000 miles and 5 months into ownership and I love the car. I have carried 5 people a fe3 times with no complaints. It is quick and fun to drive but also feels absolutely rock solid at all times. Mine has all season tires. I was gong to replace them but so far I have no complaints. Interior is really nice. It feels like a much more expensive car.It has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay which works great with my Note 8. Near perfect phone integration. I have also used it with a couple of iPhones. I would never use factory nav if it had it. Mostly have used Google Maps but also Waze. The audio system sounds really good for what it is. Subwoofer adds some punch. There is some harshness to the sound but for a factory system it sounds good. The clutch is light and the shifter is really good. Power is way more than adequate. I live right by Texas 130 with an 85mph speed limit and it feels great cruising a little above the limit. It is smooth and quiet. Very little torque steer. Every now and then I notice a little but most of the time you can barely tell it's FWD. I have had no issues so far. I shopped Golf Rs as well but in retrospect I think I made the right choice for me. The Golf R was about 15K more. I feel like I got a ton of car for the money with this GTI. Since I've owned it it has average 28-31mpg and I drive it fairly hard. The only complaint I have about the car is the lack of cargo room with the seats up. Compared to the GLI it's not much. Fold the rear seats down and there's a lot more room. They don't quite fold flat though. All in all a great car that really may be the best car you can buy for the money.

Again, so much to like in one "sports" car!
I looked at the 2016 Passat and reviewed it so well my wife let me buy an E300 MB, but I can explain. I got the 1989 GLI itch all over again, so I purchased a silver 2017 GTI SE. Yep, same stuff as the Passat except in a SPORT verses luxury bent platform. I didn't want another E300, but a car that excelled at the opposite end of the car spectrum. I had to have a car that was as economical, good or better at hauling stuff, more fun to drive and had a better stereo than my 2008 Focus SE. Slam dunk with the GTI. The E300 drives you, you drive the GTI 6 speed manual (shifts like butter spreads on a warm day). I can't wait to DRIVE this car, same as the 1989 GLI! Something about VW handling that is addictive. The engine is a sweet thing. At idle it simply goes away on you, nothing, not a quiver. But give it the gas and it talks really nice things to you, shift me now. Power with the manual is electric motor linear and STRONG. The front limited slip differential drive system keeps both wheels pulling in snow, wet or dry with excellent throttle modulation. The engine is a tiger or a pussycat. Drive it like the 2008 Focus and I get 38-45.5 MPG. Yep, same 34 mile route each way as before with the Focus. Drive it like hard like a sports car and still get 28 MPG. The best way to explain this car is that all the pieces are seemingly of the exact same quality level. Nothing irks you to say, "wow, that's seems cheap". OK, except that the rear view mirror should be auto dimming, weird it isn't. The odometer goes away when you set the cruise as the set speed takes its place, weird but not a problem. The instruments are clear and a German conservative white on black LCD illustration. I like it that way, too. Everything ergonomically falls right into your hands. I will also say that the interior of the SE NEEDS those Clark Cloth plaid seats or something other than red stitching and a few red lighting accents, big time. I am not a fan of black interiors, but it is a good black interior. Still, give us a two-tone option, PLEASE. Oh, the seats are superlative for my 155 LBS frame. BIG guys may want to try before you buy. I needed the stereo (OK, wanted) and a few other bits I know would make long term ownership nice (ya, I paid cash for it). This is a sports car, so the ride is heavenly responsive to the road without being harsh. If you think it rides harshly, this isn't your car, or any other sport type car. For a sports car it is sublime. Not only does it go really well, with near no lag in the turbo (I have the manual, so I can drive around it without thinking) or torque steer (the 1989 GLI had PLENTY of that) but it STOPS like NOW with the R series brakes. The green house is WONDERFUL old school lower belt line, like the Passat...so you can SEE yet it has five star safety ratings. Bi-Xenon lights are very good, not the LED's on the E300, though, but way over average. The entertainment is just like my Passat review. It is fast and easy to use with the jump buttons on the side and 100% intuitive touch from there. I've never felt it to be slow or unresponsive. I use a 128GB SD card with WAV file music and the USB for the phone and carplay apps and navigation. I'm smitten with the overall assembly of this car. OK now the negatives. This is maybe the third EA888 engine iteration. Fixed are the cam chain tensioner issues. Left are likely the longer term carbon on the intake valves common to DI injection engines (no fuel across the intakes to clean them anymore) so a 80,000 mile cleaning is in the cards. Not a deal breaker as it is cheaper(~$800.00) to do than a rubber belt cam chain maintenance interval. The PCV valve can fail (this is the latest version that is again, supposed to work) and pressurize the crankcase (rear crank seal goes) or pulls a vacuum (oil is pulled through the intake). Turbo engines can be hell on the PCV valve with the boost pressure. But, this is a $200.00 part and an easy hour in the garage to fix at 50,000 miles. Fix it like an airplane BEFORE it fails. So I'll replace the PCV valve every 50,000 and not ever know the original one would have lasted the life of the car. Pity me but it is cheap insurance. Otherwise this engine is to die for. This is a poor excuse for a mid life crisis car, it is way too affordable, way too practical, way too sublimely sexy in appearance, and yet still way too much fun. Count me in. The GTI is still the best, I drove the rest. 01/20/2020 - @31,000. This car has been flawless. NOTHING has gone wrong. Oil consumption has been ZERO in oil intervals. I get 40 MPG on backroads in the summer and 37 MPG in winter (worse gas mix for mileage). The car is EXACTLY what it says it is, a small fun zippy car. Yes, it is stiffer than the GOLF. My wife liked the physical layout of the car so well she sold her 2012 Focus and bought the Wolfsburg automatic edition. She wanted the same car minus the bumps. Her language, not mine. Same reliable car as the GTI. Now have 2020 GTI Autobahn!

The perfect balance.
The Sport trim offers you the best value in your GTI I feel. It is almost like the Autobahn compared to the SE, just spend the $1500 or so more, you won't regret it. I got a great deal on my GTI Sport. I will get the negatives out of the way now since the list is still really short after 1 month of ownership. There are no fog lamps on this trim level. This was quite troublsome the other night in a white-out snow. THe road holding wasn't the issue, visibility was, and fog lamps would've been really nice to have. You get the lighting package, however, which gives you the lovely and aggressive looking xenon headlights and LED DRL lights. Ties the front together nicely, every GTI should have these. The adaptive lighting when turning at slower speeds is also much better than in was on my 2012 Golf TDI. Quicker to respond, quicker to turn off, and better at throwing the light. Second negative, rides a bit harsh I feel for normal driving, the last generation of GTI was a bit more comfy in a straight line or during casual driving, however, it also didn't turn like the Mk7. This car's new MQB platform from Audi is a MAJOR improvement in the Golf/GTI lineup, and handling is bliss in a corner when you throw it around a bit. Sharp, direct, and almost like an extension of your arms when you hold at 3 & 9'o clocks. Also, you could teach someone with getting comfortable with a manual transmission, or at least the principles of it. Super easy clutch, almost too easy, I plan to do some aftermarket work in there anyways but for the masses, it is decent. I have had one defect so far, a piece of cloth that forms the backing of the rear armrest fell off, and the armrest is back-ordered, minor detail. Can't even see it unless you look in from the rear. I am not concerned with it right now. The positives go on and on and on. But, I will let you find out for yourself! Update: One thing I have noticed in the almost 10k miles of owning the vehicles, is that the paint is far too delicate. The piano black decorative trim on the door B-pillars is liquid and even fingers leave marks that require abrasives to remove. If you are very picky about your vehicle upkeep and like it perfect, like me, be prepared to work hard for it! 1/5/2019: Recently, at 34,000 miles, the water pump began to leak. As a wrench at a VW dealer 5 years ago, these were a fairly common issue on some models with the 2.0L TSI engines. I was sorta disappointed to see they are still an occurrence at such low mileage, and even more so that I got stuck with one. But repair was fast and done neatly by the dealership. I have also replaced all 4 tires at 34,000 miles. The Golf/GTI platforms seem to devour rear tires, even with a 5,000 mile rotation frequency. I have owned two Golfs/GTIs now, and both had significant tire noise by 30,000 miles, even with 5/32 tread left. The front tires seem to wear just fine, until they spend some time in the back. Alignment specs are perfect(per OEM), trust me. But again, this is an issue I have lived with as a VW owner for 7 years now. I sorta expect it before the buy, so I can't really hold it against the car, however I will be fair and honest and update the review as such. I plan to hold onto the vehicle for at least the life of the front brakes, at which time the loan and my checking account will hopefully be ready to climb the Golf family tree further. Being Golf R brakes, OEM parts will run me around $500. Would rather put that towards a new GTI or possibly even a Golf R.

Nimble Rocket
I rated acceleration 4 of 5, not cuz it's slow (it's actually really quick), but because there is a bit of turbo lag. But once you get the swing of how to work with it with the manual trans, it's not a problem. This car is so solid, confidence-inspiring and neutral feeling, yet it feels ready to play at all times. And it's an absolute monster on twisty roads. All that, and it's as sedate of a cruiser as you like when you want it to be. Amazing all-arounder of a car.

Great car!
Love this car! So much fun! Many great things about it: acceleration, steering, cloth seats, gas mileage, small size, etc. I got the manual but would have been just as happy with the automatic. I own a 2009 & 2015 BMW 335, but I prefer to drive the GTI.

This car is AWESOME!
I was skeptical about buying a VW - I had set on one of the following: Mazda 3, Honda Civic, or a Ford Focus. Since I was out shopping anyway, I decided to check out the GTI; it was love at first acceleration. This car is awesome - you can select Eco mode, drive it responsibly, and get 39mpg; or you can select Sport mode, let the turbo do its thing, and have a lot of fun. I like small cars; this one fits the bill while taking 4 adults around very comfortably. The interior is nice, instruments are well positioned, the seats are snug and firm (as you would expect from a sport car), and the driving position commanding. I got the standard speakers, and I'm happy with them. The dual clutch transmission is something out of this world - it switches gears quickly and seamlessly. All in all, this is a fine specimen of German engineering at its best.

falling in love with my GTI
The car is only a month old for me but I absolutely love driving it. I commute 100 miles a day and this car makes it much less of a chore. Acceleration on the highway is amazing and the nimble handling makes it a blast to drive around town. The only knock that I would give it is that I am struggling to get close to the advertised MPG. That might be attributed to a heavy foot though. :-)

A Brilliant, Sport Hatch
The GTI Sport, 6 speed manual, is extremely docile yet responsive in city traffic and a beast on the back roads. Rarely have I driven a car on a daily basis that is as sorted out as this one. I have plenty of space for four adult passengers, great visibility, room for all my stuff, a delightful engine and transmission, strong brakes and solid, timeless styling. I could put down the rear seat, crawl into the back and curl up to sleep through night if I needed to. It is a solid vehicle that drives way above it's class. It's a breeze to park, reliable, and I will say it again, quick in real world conditions. The OEM tires leave something to be desired and I look forward to replacing them in due time for a set that is more tactile. VWs depreciate faster than Toyota and Honda. The only way to offset this is to drive the car for many years---which I plan to do because I do not see anything else on the market or coming to the market at its price range that comes close to the current GTI. Update 2/19: Now two years into ownership and the VW GTI continues to be a solid, problem-free performer. I am very pleased with the car. Update 2/20 Three years into ownership the GTI remains rock solid. No issues and my mechanic reports very little wear and tear on the car. My tires and brakes for example are holding up exceedingly well. Car is a delight to drive. Solid and safe. Nothing compares with it if you like small cars and dislike SUVs as your daily driver. When I bought it, the GTI was considered one of the ten best cars in the world. Three years into it I agree.

Great Purchase, best year GTI 2017
The Sport (hard to find here) model is everything it was advertised to be. Owned 13 days, driven only 200 miles. Learning the new technology, and much to learn yet. I know one thing: every VW I've ever owned, I regret selling/trading. This will be the end-all of my dreams. I still drive a 1999 Jetta TDI...so reliable and economical. I've decided to drive my GTI Sport like I want to drive and disregard "economy". I am going to enjoy this fine piece of machinery. Oh, retired law enforcement officer, 18 high-speed pursuits (successful), Vietnam Era Vet. I just want to make sure I can handle this superb vehicle supremely before I unleash her. Will do. Now owned 6.5 months, just under 4000 miles. (3/18/18). Still everything I had hoped it would be. To avoid tickets (none thus far), I have experimented with "economy". Filled up today, 32.7 mpg driving locally (mostly 4-lane trip to and from work, 55 mph zone), two traffic lights, 40 miles round-trip. Occasional bouts with 70-80 mph spurts. I think on a real interstate trip, I can achieve 37-39 in flat-terrain (as in going to the beach & return). Mountains? I expect 29-31. This is NOT my 1976 Rabbit (which I loved). Torque steer could be a major problem for less than professional (retired police officer) drivers. It's the "poor man's Porsche", in my humble opinion, with front wheel drive. (I wish I had my 1974 Westphalia camper van back, too). I could do without a few of the electronic gimmicks, and wish navigation was standard. Also, the special "xenon" lights limit visibility on these hilly roads locally on "dim", with very low, flat-line reach. I would opt-out for them. Brakes are excellent (two incidents have already prevented a collision). Overall, I expect the 2017 GTI Sport model to hold its value better than many cars. I look forward to owning at least another 2 1/2 years. Three years seems to be the breaking point for devaluation on most cars. I'll be looking to the future to VW and other German engineered vehicles for my next winner. This is a winner! Update: 9/19/19 Fantastic vehicle. Consumer Reports rated this the most favorable year of GTI until this time. Now with 13,600 miles, has even better performance all-around! More acceleration, better fuel economy (even had a trip with 41 mpg); the wind must have been with me! One problem: must buy replacement oil-drain plugs...they seem to be disposable according to my service adviser. Carry extras in glove box, he says. Performance: Engine just gets stronger and stronger. Fantastic little car. Rides like a go-cart, but that's the sports-car result. Wife, (69 next month) has a difficult time getting in & out and complains about the rough ride. Oh, well...been married 50 years in March; put up with it! Sooooooooo, many times we take my 1999 Jetta TDI (which rides better than that go-cart). Oh, it still gets 53 mpg, and 49 local. Just repainted and a wonderful VW too. 134,000 miles. Go figure. Other vehicles: 2000 Ford F-250 7.3 turbo diesel, 2002 Maxima SE 3.5, 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer (for sale) on Classiccars.com. 9/20/20. Three years young now. Out of full warranty. 16245 miles. Only complaint: Re-setting service reminder @ last oil change. Service @ non-VW service station failed to reset @ my request. Other computer monitors not functioning as a result (mpg, trip, etc.) and I (age 69) have not conquered that yet. I have paperwork, so......... Otherwise, this is one mean Son-of-a-gun! Wife can't stand it for sports car ride characteristics, but what a performer! One trip last year averaged 42 mpg!!!! Outstanding. So, you see, I can treat her very gently at times. She seems to be holding her value very well. Checked asking prices a few months ago and they were asking $22k-$23k with many more mile than mine. Not bad. Being retired law enforcement officer, I cannot say I've tested her limits; only can say there were "targeted areas" of testing. Way above the performance of my last Police Interceptor Crown Vic! Enough said? ******************* April 12, 2023 ******************* In Aug, will have owned GTI Sport six years. 21,177 miles. Super dependable; Recent 800 mile round trip, I was disappointed fuel economy, but I think the Premium gas (93 Octane) may not have been 93 octane! Performance gets better and better, however. (Wife's previous complaints about uncomfortable ride has been fixed by buying 2022 Equinox for trips that she accompanies with me. Disappointing VW news (see previous ratings reports) My 1999 1/2 (2000 body style) Jetta TDI bit the dust....broken timing belt 8000 miles before one recommended to be replaced. Could not find anyone (in time) to evaluate damage. (had just repainted, tires, etc.....nobody wants to work in this area! In 2022, I believe I could have sold this car for what I paid for it (while car lots were vacant due to the chip shortage), but I"m keeping this VW!

GTI Sport - Perfect Drivers Car
My 1st experience with a VW, and I'm pretty impressed with the quality of the interior/exterior. Car is reasonably quick and handles extremely well. In addition I'm getting over 30mpg, pleasantly surprised especially since more of my driving is not highways . Its a fairly small car but is bigger inside than you would expect - plenty of room for 4 passengers - 5 in a pinch. Trunk is a little small but works well since it's a hatchback. It's certainly hard to find a "drivers car" anymore, especially one that is practical and reasonably priced - if that's what you like this is about the only game in town.

A perfect car?? if not as close as you can get!
I traded in my 2015 GTI coupe last week for a 2017 4 door- i got almost 4K over what i owed on the car- plus an additional 3 K off - promotional deal - not only is this a great car for the money - it is just a great car period- I have owned over 25 cars in my life- almost all new and kept for 2-3 years- i have never been more satisfied with the driving experience - comfort- performance of any car i have owned- on my last long drive - about 500 miles in my previous GTI i averaged 40.7 MPG- yes it uses premium - fit - finish- refinement- i honestly do not know how they do it at this price point- i do not like gadgets and my car is a S with a 6 sp manual and NO OPTIONS- i love the apple car that now comes with it- so intuitive even for me - i did add the wheel tire protection as i had a bad experience with tires and wheels on the 2015 and for $1200 for 5 years if i use it once a year to refinish the wheels it will pay for itself- if you love to drive- love the connection of car and response - i highly recommend this car to anyone!

This is a blast to drive and own!
I purchased this vehicle when I returned my leased 2013 Passat SE. I liked the Passat, but I really, really like my new GTI - Autobahn and I'm glad I purchased it. I've owned a Mustang GTs, a regular GTI, and other vehicles. I must admit that this is car is the most fun I've had driving! Handles great, acceleration is surprisingly quick and responsive! The Autobahn has tons of features and options!

The Full Package!
I knew I wanted a sporty hatchback coming from a 2002 loaded Passat GLX wagon that I loved and hated giving up. But when the heat goes and you're dealing with single digit winters, you don't have much choice. I didn't need quite as much car as the Passat, and it wasn't fast or sporty enough for my needs now anyway. The choice was narrowed down to the GTI or the Mazda 3 with the 2.5 engine. I was also on the fence about an auto trans or stick, since I was missing a stick for many years but have a 30 mile daily commute in traffic. So the choice was clear finally. Get a 2017 GTI Sport DSG. For essentially the same price after discounts as the Mazda, you get a better motor, suspension, brakes, and interior. You give up a few gadgets and get a big smile every time you push START and give it some gas. I'm torn as to whether I'll mod the car because it drives exceedingly well stock. I bought new a '97 M3 and kept it 7 years because it drove so well. Nothing could touch it for performance or practicality. Nothing that is until this car! It matches it in performance and handling at half its price. So yeah, I like this car.

2017 GTI Sport DSG
Like most people in this segment who are shopping for a fun to drive affordable sport car, it was hard chosing btw the GTI and the WRX as both car diving dynamic and performance are excellent. I chose the GTI for its quality interior and DSG as a daily driver over the WRX CVT. However, if you need awd, then get the WRX.

Good car but not perfect
I've been driving an autobahn trim for the past four months. Overall, I think this is a very good car for daily driving but it's far from perfect. The DCC in comfort mode does improve the ride quality significantly, giving a firm but smooth ride around town. However, the ride deteriorates at high speeds (70 to 75 mph) and becomes somewhat rough and bouncy. It wouldn't be my first choice if I was going on a long road trip. I think the blind spot monitor system is unsafe. The warning light comes on late, and I can often see a vehicle in my blind spot before the light turns on. I do think the adaptive cruise control is useful and easy to operate. For everyday music listening, the Fender system does not offer much more than the lower level 8 speaker system. For comparison, my daughter drives a golf sportwagen with a base sound system, and I think it sounds just as good. For what it's worth, my recommendation to VW is to offer both 17 inch and 18 inch wheels so drivers who want a more compliant ride can choose the smaller wheels. Also, VW needs to work on their blind spot detection system.

First and last VW I will ever buy! (S, 6 spd man)
The water pump is made out of plastic. Why would anyone make one of the most vital parts of the car out of plastic? I have already had the plastic thermostat housing replaced at 34k miles. The clutch makes a growling noise after the car has warmed up, when you take your foot off of the clutch and the car is in neutral. The dealer says this is normal for all of their GTIs. So apparently dysfunction is the norm. First gear sounds like a tornado siren, but again, this is considered normal. The blower motor makes a loud chirping noise when it is cold outside. (Replaced at 35k miles). I can't wait until the car needs to have the intake valves cleaned because of the carbon buildup issues with these direct injection engines. The steering wheel is an awkward shape and is uncomfortable on long trips. The road noise is so bad at times, people cannot hear me when using the phone through the car's audio system. Every tiny imperfection in the road is transmitted from the wheels to your spine. This car is terrible for long trips. When the car is cold, there is a misfire that can be heard and felt yet the dealer could not duplicate. The fuel door says 87 octane, but unless you run 93 octane the engine knocks horribly when accelerating from a stop or just patting the gas. You cannot actually disable the traction control or stability control. Why have the buttons? The positives: the car comes loaded for the most part and it is quick and agile. The gas mileage is surprisingly good (32 mpg avg).

GTI Sport 6M - Most fun I've had in a long time
I purchased this Sport 6M after a long search for the right manual transmission car. As one of the dinosaurs who still likes to shift his own gears, my options are getting more limited. I previously owned two BMW 328i models that I loved, but as they grew older, they became a lot less reliable. I wanted to find a car that has a strong track record for reliability but is also fun to drive. Every comparison test that included a GTI mentioned that these are near-perfect cars. The more I read, the more I realized I'm missing an opportunity. This car is such a blast to drive. Enough power to get me through my commute, but also makes weekend drives so much more fun. I forgot how much I love to drive and feel that connection to a car. The interior is better than I expected, the Clark Plaid seats aren't just a talking point, they're comfortable and so supportive. The shifting is easy and precise, although it took me some time to adapt. It took me a minute to get over the fact that I'm a 40 year old who drives a "hot hatch", but it's not a mid life crisis car. It is practical as much as it is fun. Overall I am thrilled with this choice. I have a 9 year old car enthusiast son who is begging me to keep this car until he is old enough to drive...he may get his wish because I see no reason to move on.

GTI FAN
I bought this car new in Feb 2017. It was the GTI autobahn with the 6-speed manual. I just traded it in for a 2019 GLI autobahn. Mainly to get the 6yr/ 72000mi warranty that is already being reduced in the 2020 models. It had under 33,000 miles and was the best car I’ve ever owned and I’m 68. Did everything well and still got 35-37 mpg on the highway

GTI on the Fly
The car is a driver's car, a real fun car to drive. The ride is somewhat dependent upon the type of tires that are on the GTI from the manufacturer. We have Hankook all season tires which are a harder rubber compound and a nosier tire so the ride is a bit nosy and you feel the bumps a bit more although not a deal breaker. But that's to be expected with a performance car and this car DOES perform. The interior looks like that of a luxury car and is much more than one can expect for a car in this class. Fit and finish is excellent and the quality of the leather and other materials is excellent and rather plush as well. It looks like VW has finally turned the corner after "diesel gate" and brought a quality and impressive car to the market. If this is things to come for VW, I believe they'll be back in front as a premier auto manufacturer.

Why was it shipped with a broken switch
I can't do a review Justice like all of those available elsewhere. It's a perennial top winner for car and driver and Motor Trend and other magazines. I was in a 2016 M3 which I traded out of because it was a colossal waste of money. Super fun car of course just no where you can possibly drive that car living in the city. I actually enjoy driving the GTI more. The GTI is like a magnificent go kart and while not as fast, at all, as the M3 it doesn't feel like driving a really heavy missile. Steering feedback is better. I hate it when it arrived it had a broken window switch and the dealership never bothered to call me to tell me that the part was in, and my annoyance at that lack of customer service and initial quality forces me to give this for stars. This car is so much fun to drive
I have owned probably 10 VWs, including numerous Jettas, a convertible Rabbit, and a Quantum. This is by far the most fun to drive. A couple of months ago, my sales guy sent me a text and told me he could upgrade my Jetta and lower my payment by $100 a month. I told him I did not want another Jetta, I wanted a Golf GTI. I have wanted one for a long time. I ended up with the 2.0T SE with beautiful titan black leather with red stitch. The exterior paint is deep black pearl metallic. I love it!!!!! The first time I really hit the gas to get on the freeway, my neck actually snapped back. It is so fast and small and zippy. I also have a 2004 Land Rover Discovery (which I really love), but I don't even want to drive it because the GTI is so much fun. I love the trim and the fact that it has 4 doors and the hatchback. The two things that I don't like as much as the Jetta - I like the temperature control system in the Jetta over the GTI and I really miss having an old fashioned navigation system not connected to a phone. Buy this car - you will be very happy!!!!!

So much joy from such a little car!
I purchased my 2016 GTI Autobahn used with around 20k miles and drove it from Albuquerque, NM to Traverse City, MI in a little over 26 hours. Needless to say I had a chance to bond with it over nearly every road condition you can imagine. With almost every option minus the lane / cruise assist and DCC, the car is extremely comfortable with a well laid out interior. I have minor gripes with the cruise and window buttons (I really liked the previous Mk6 stalk mounted cruise which you didn't have to look away from the road to adjust and window buttons on the upper slant of the door handle where your fingers can easily find them), but overall everything is where you expect it to be. The quiet, well insulated cabin helps make the most of its ample Fender (Panasonic) sound system. With just over a year and 20k additional miles I can honestly say the GTI is about the best all around car I've ever owned. I just nails it's main objective of being a fun to drive hot-hatch really well, while doing everything else with the effortless grace of a car well above it's price range. Even during a brutal stretch of northern Michigan winter, it was still a blast to drive. Whether hauling ass around a bend or bikes to my favorite trail the GTI is eager to please. The only changes I've made have been slightly wider Michelin P4S on wider rims for summer and narrow rims with tall Michelin Ice-X's for the cold which I highly recommend. Having dedicated summer and winter tires expands the cars envelope exponentially.

The Perfect All-Around Vehicle
I was looking for a daily driver, so I needed a car that checked a lot of boxes and was comfortable, versatile, a strong value, and had great fuel economy. And yet as a car enthusiast I wanted something with a little personality and character, too. The GTI has delivered in spades. Given the practicality requirements I chose the GTI S in the four-door version with the automatic transmission. I'm having a hard time imagining how I can possibly list all of the great things about this car and the tremendous value it represents. Visibility, ride, comfort, and quality of interior and exterior materials are all excellent - you never feel like you're in an economy (read: cheap) car. As opposed to the fastest or best-handling hot hatch, Volkswagen decided to create a great all-rounder, which is actually one of the things I most appreciate about it - it doesn't beat you up over rough roads, or seem to always be wanting to rev, which, while fun, can get annoying if you're just trying to get from point A to point B (I have another more performance-oriented car for high-performance driving). I consistently see 28 mpg in town and 37 mpg on the highway. The only faults to note are that the transmission can hunt around a bit between shifts at low speeds, and the CarPlay system (which, overall, I love) sometimes isn’t smooth when opening or closing apps, or when using iTunes – occasionally I have to turn the CD player on first for the volume to work, though that may be because I have an older iPhone. The car’s driving modes actually create a noticeable difference in its overall character; in Sport mode, the steering becomes tighter, the ride firmer, and the shifts more crisp, for example, which is a lot of fun. I decided to purchase the car new for the warranty, as past GTIs have arguably had some issues, and I wanted to know it was maintained correctly from the get-go So far, I haven't had any problems at all. I also skipped the sunroof as I heard they leak and are complicated to repair. In all, the GTI - a sedan, station wagon, sports car, and economy car, all in one - is even better than I'd hoped it would be. I couldn't be happier with it. UPDATE: The car now has 16K miles on it and no problems at all. After a year and a half of ownership, I'm still really happy with it.

First German car!!
I was iffy about getting into a vw due to the reliability issues I have heard about in the past with other different models. But I did my research and I found a lot of good reviews. So I went ahead and bought mine with over 28,000 miles. It has been a good car so far. No issues as of now. It handles amazing, and feels so nice driving. I totally recommend the manual transmission due to the Automatic transmission sucking in these cars. Plus with manual you feel the car way more..

VW GTI
No issues as of yet. Smooth ride, good on gas. Fun car to drive. Price point set regardless of the model, meaning the lower level trim priced in same range as the top level trim.
160k miles and still going strong
I gave VW another chance after having trouble with my 2013 Passat TDI (anyone else have repeated heater core issues?) and I’m glad I did. Can’t say enough good things about my GTI. I drive a LOT for work, mostly highway, and I never get tired of driving this car. I bought it for $23k new, and I don’t see how I could have found a better car. The seats are great on my bad back, the handling is fantastic, good gas mileage at 34-35 mpg, and Apple CarPlay works well. I got the S version because I liked the look and feel of the plaid cloth seats and they weren’t an option for the next trim level up. At about 20k miles I spent $1200 and installed an aftermarket downpipe and had Unitronic tuning software installed, which beefed up the HP to 337 and torque to 369. So yeah, put it in sport mode when needed and it flies. To be sure, this is not your grandfather’s plush riding car, it’s sport hatch and rides like one. And it shifts like one...the DSG has a bit of a learning curve. That said, every time I get in a rental like a Camry or Sonata and drive it for a few days, I can’t wait to get back into my VW. Last note, my car has been 100% reliable. Incredibly, I’m still on my first set of brakes! Tires, on the 4th set which I think is about average. I religiously follow the owner’s manual maintenance schedule. Might sell it at 200k but maybe not if it keeps running like new, as it does now. I’m not brand loyal at all (next car will probably be a Subaru) but I’m really glad I bought this car. If the R wasn’t so much more expensive, I might have bought it next.

Fantastic Sports Car
I have owned other sports cars and I was surprised at how much I enjoy the GTI. It is powerful, fun to drive and fuel efficient. On the highway it runs as if it is on rails. With snow tires, it performs incredibly well in poor driving conditions. The interior is well set up and the sound system is excellent. With the rear seats down, it can hold a huge amount of cargo if needed. I don't think a better price/performance car can be found in this class.
