2017 Toyota Corolla iM
As a motorhead, I was braced for the worst in reading all the reviews about how underpowered and slow this car was. After driving it for the past week, I'm pleasantly surprised. Are you going to win any drag races in this? Nope. Can you get on a freeway onramp at a healthy and safe-to-merge clip? Can you play around on a twisty road? Can you chirp the tires in 1st? That's a yes, yes and … sometimes. :-) Seriously, what I have found, and I have the 6MT, is if you keep the RPMs in the right band, you have access to adequate power and torque. Combine that with the independent rear suspension and you have a peppy, fun-to-drive car. As the saying goes, it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow.
Add Toyota reliability, great safety features (lane departure warning, collision avoidance, automatic highbeams), some other features not normally found on this class of vehicle (alloy wheels, backup camera, dual zone climate control, touchscreen controls, bluetooth connectivity, etc). The sound system sounds surprisingly good.
So, my take? Can't go wrong with this it you are looking for an efficient, practical, cool-ish styled hatch that's easy to live with.
PRO: fun and peppy, lots of features, reliable, safe, unlikely to have been modded and/or abused
CON: it is objectively slower, but unless you are tracking your car, how fast can you (should you) really go...
