Got this car with just under 6,000 miles on it and put 16,000 more miles on it in my first six months of ownership. It is sublime. Driving it like a normal car in normal mode, it feels . . . normal. In part because the automatic PDK transmission revs and shifts gears at fairly low RPMs in normal mode, there is definite, noticeable lag when you punch the accelerator while the car is … already in motion. In sport mode, the suspension becomes more taught and it revs a bit higher, and now when you floor the accelerator while the car is already moving, there is only very minimal lag and the car roars to life with little hesitation. Finally, in sport-plus mode, the engine revs significantly higher still and gear shifts with the PDK occur at a much higher RPM. In this mode, when you punch the accelerator while the car is moving, I have detected no lag whatsoever and the car instantaneously leaps forward like a bullet and just keeps accelerating.
I got the Carrera 4 GTS because I felt it was the sweet spot in the 911 model range--a great daily driver (and I do drive it almost every single day) that is a joy to take my kids to school in or to use for runs to the grocery store. But with 450 HP and 405 lb-ft of torque, it has as much power as I can ever imagine wanting in a sports car. From a dead stop and using launch control, the car hits 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. And when you put the pedal to the metal, the car instantly transforms from Jekyll into Hyde--suddenly becoming an untamed monster. I have hit 187 mph and the car was still accelerating when I had to let up on the gas because I was running out of track.
But the real thrill with this car is not high speeds as much as the phenomenal way it handles, especially on twisty back roads. As anyone who owns this car will testify, the way that it hugs the road while cornering at speed is thrilling. It is almost as if the car is glued to the road. This is particularly the case in warm weather and with high performance summer tires. But with high performance winter tires, the car also is a handling marvel on snowy and icy roads. This past winter, my son and I took it on a three-day road trip in the middle of a protracted winter storm, and the way it handled over four different Washington state mountain passes was mind-boggling. As cars and trucks cautiously ambled along in the right lane to avoid sliding out of control, I spent the three days flying past everyone in the left lane with confidence that only grew with each passing mile about the all-wheel-drive's handling competence in winter conditions with the snow tires.
But regardless of weather, this car is just a sheer joy to drive under any conditions. Immediately after purchasing it in Florida, I drove 3,300 miles in three days all the way to Seattle, and I was wide awake and in absolute bliss the entire time. This car delivers so much joy to the driving experience, I am so glad I got the car, cost notwithstanding. I bought it to drive it--not garage it--and I plan to pile on the miles with at least one family member with me as much as possible. Taking good care of it, I hope to be able to drive it for many years to come.
