My 3rd Tacoma
Picked up my 2022 Tacoma TRD Off Rd 4 weeks ago. Had a 92' and a 2012 previously. The Tacoma has come a long way. Comfortable and practical. I didn't need the big Silverado anymore and wanted something with known reliability. I plan on keeping this for a very long time. For a midsized truck it seems much bigger to me. Maybe because of how high it sits or the hood but it feels only a little smaller than a full size truck. If I got the long bed it would be even closer. The v6 loves the highway, 24 mpg, but stop and go in the city and I'm probably only averaging 13 mpg although if I baby it around town 17 mpg is attainable. Overall I'm very happy. On a side note many dealers are marking up the Tacoma $5k or more over sticker. DONT PAY IT!!. Look around there are many dealers selling them at msrp you might just need to travel a little but it'll be worth it.

Still strong
This is my 4th SR5. My only complaints are minor: the temperature panel is too small. The arm rest console is also too small. They took away the change compartment on the drivers side and also took away the second storage compartment in the bed. Else another win for Toyota. Rugged, excellent electronic display, power and size!

Horrible fuel saving system.
We were so excited to get the 2022 TRD Sport 4x4 Tacoma. So excited we drove from NW FL to Tampa. This Tacoma came off the production line on 10/28/2021. We picked it up Nov. 25 2022. We did a short test drive around the dealership and all was well aside from the very loud engine and road noise. It’s a truck so it wasn’t a deal breaker. We drove around Tamps for a short bit, heading home the next morning. We noticed a odd vibration on the way back to NW FL. Once home it became my daily driver. I can drive anywhere between 15-100 miles on any given day. As of Dec 22 2021, the vibration worsened and it seemed to be hesitant to accelerate and seemed as if it had bad fuel. We made an appointment and took it to our local dealership only to be told there’s nothing wrong with the system but there was something wrong with the rear axel and bearings. The vibration and hesitation continues. An engineer rode with us and explained this was a known issue with the 2022 Tacoma and they’ve not yet figured out what to do about it. It’s possibly something to do with the Government regulated fuel consumption regulations. This “known” issue has almost gotten me creamed on HWY 98 a number of times. If we’d have know this issue before getting it, we’d of stuck with the amazing 2017 Camry. We’re very disappointed as Toyota is our go to. Honestly, I’d call it a Lemon. I strongly dislike this truck and feel like we should be able to renegotiate for a different vehicle.

Toyota is Toyota.
Just make sure your sales man don’t push you to get all the unnecessary extras warranties. It’ll increase 15k to the price
Nice truck and deals can be had!
Each dealership gave the appearance of not needing to make a deal in your favor because of supply and demand. But I'm here to tell you, this is not true! The supply of new trucks might be tight, but the flip side of this is that the dealerships are not moving very many cars. So despite their bravado of appearing to be in the drivers seat, they still need to move vehicles. Just bought a 2022 TRD Sport, 4 door 6' bed for $42k. Be nice, but be aggressive. Walk in prepared with your Fico score in hand, and comparable internet truck offers printed out. They will deal. For the last 16 years I have been driving a Ford F250 4x4 crew cab, and just didn't need that towing capacity or 9 mpg any longer. The Toyota is a nice tight truck, with tons of features. Ironically, I just paid the same amount for this new Toyota that I paid for the F250 16 years ago. How crazy is that? Good luck!

Glad I got the V-6
There were no V-6 Tacoma's in stock just 4cyl. so my salesman let me drive his. I'm really glad He did. The 4cyl seemed unpowered to me. The gas mileage is only 1 or 2 mpg difference. Also the V-6 model came with extra features like a factory installed hitch and wiring connections. So to me it was worth the extra money. Thanks to Mark Doyle my salesman!

So excited, but slightly disappointed
I bought my brand new 2022 Toyota Tacoma in January 2022. I decided to drive, live and be in my new Tacoma for a year before I put in a review, so I can give an honest review. Positives: I love the 4 wheel drive, my rear locker, and all the amazing off road features. When I go off road, I’m confident that I’ll be able to get out of most (maybe ANY) situation that befalls me. I love the safety tech package. BSM, lane departure and the auto high beams makes driving almost thoughtless. The stereo system is great with all the newest tech for syncing your phone and more. Now to what I don’t like: The oh sh$& handle on the passenger side makes zero sense. It’s located in the front on the right hand side of the passenger door. While off roading over rocks or anything bunny, there is no way to adequately hold onto the handle. If you do somehow grab the handle, it puts your arm in an awkward straight front position that will more likely assist in jamming your arm rather than help stabilize you. It is seriously a horribly thought out component for the Off Road trim. Mapping doesn’t come with your Tacoma tech package. Not a huge deal with being able to connect your phone, but with a button that says Map, but no way to install the feature without a trip to the dealership, it doesn’t make a lot of sense. I own a 96 Land Crusier, a 99 4Runner, and a 2006 Lexus. This Tacoma feels beyond cheap. It’s been one year and the panels aren’t flush with the vehicle, specifically the driver side panel closest to the floor. I keep the back seats down so I can use the back as a type of trunk. I only have transported groceries, but there are scratch marks on the plastic that should be way more durable for a $45,000 truck. My biggest gripe of the Tacoma are the seats. The drivers seat is fully automatic, but the passenger seat is fully manual. Another way Toyota cheaper out. My drives seat is beyond uncomfortable . As I’ve stated, I’ve owned Toyotas all my life, and I had to get a pillow for the Tacoma. If you plan on any road trips (which you should if you get this type of truck), comfort will be an issue. Overall, as excited as I was for a new Toyota, I’m disappointed in the lack of attention to details that I’ve had in every other Toyota I’ve owned and still own. I don’t see this truck having the longevity of previous Toyotas. I hope to be proven wrong.

Issues to consider
The Edmunds review is not accurate for vehicles being shipped in 2022. There are issues with these trucks that need to be considered. Edmunds failed to point out that these trucks have a terrible throttle lag caused by the new drive by wire technology. That along with the awfully bad shift points in the transmission make this truck miserable to drive. The seating compartment also feels terrible cramped compared to previous models. The resale value is still going to be good. I recommend buying a different vehicle until Toyota fixes the throttle and transmission issues.

LOUD and NOT fun to drive (manual)
I have been dying to own a Tacoma for upwards of 20 years (or whatever they were called before Tacoma). I finally bit the bullet, ordered mine before it was even at the dealership, and drove from Atlanta to Charleston, SC, to buy it. I really wanted to like it, wanted to drive it into the ground, wanted to use it for the next stage of my life in a colder, more mountainous climate away from Georgia when I move next year. But....I couldn't. I've already traded it in after literally 3 months and 5k miles (did get back just about what I paid for it, though, a definite plus with Tacomas). As far as looks goes, I loved it. Rugged TRD Sport 4x4. One of the coolest looking trucks out there. I would only consider a Toyota. The new Frontiers look pretty cool but the backseat is like sitting on an awkward concrete block. And the new Rangers and Colorados, LOL, I don't want to spend my life in the shop. So, moving on from the good part, its appearance..... Now the bad or not so good. It's NOISY and UNDERPOWERED. Only a few cars in my life have been automatics. I've driven mostly manuals, and I've driven so many that I have a good frame of reference for this review. This is the 2nd worst manual I've ever driven (#1 spot goes to the worst car I've ever owned, a manual 2016 Honda HR-V. OMG). Anyway, for a V6 with 270something horsepower and a 6-speed manual, this thing felt like it had no power. In order to get it moving, you had to laaaaaay into the accelerator (and watch the fuel efficiency meter on the touchscreen drop to single digits for a while). I was scared to pull out of my neighborhood at times if cars were anywhere nearby, as I wasn't sure I'd make it. For a truck with this engine, it should feel stronger than this. It felt like I was constantly begging it for more power. A result of this was the LOUDNESS. Even once you got it going up to speed, like 75 on the interstate, it still had very pronounced engine noise up in the cabin. You'd think there'd be some kind of insulation between the cabin and the engine compartment, but it seemed like there was very little. I expect more noise out of a truck, of course, but not this much. On to the interior....the seats, while a little better than the previous gen, are still not very comfortable. There was plenty of room for 5 passengers; they just wouldn't be very comfortable for the trip. Also, the touchscreen. It was fine overall but could often be quite slow to change over to whatever you selected. There were times I'd be yelling, "C'mon", waiting for it to switch to sat radio, bluetooth, whatever. A final note I'd give is about buying it new. There was definitely a break-in period that was awkward. By the time I traded it at 5k miles (for a 2011 4runner, which I love and is super quiet), I think I had broken it in fairly well. But for the first several thousand miles, it was weird. I know all new cars require a little breaking in, but I've never seen that period quite as strange as it was with this Tacoma. All of the loudness and underpowered things I've mentioned above were even more pronounced during the break-in period. I was driving my daughter back to her college one night from a fun day at Cedar Point, and I felt so bad because she couldn't even nap on the ride back because of the noise, awkward shifting, and rough ride. Sooooo, all of this to say, if you want a dependable, cool-looking truck, the Tacoma certainly will fit the bill, but you better be prepared to put up with a vehicle that has all of the above issues. It was simply not the fun, enjoyable experience I'd been dreaming of for upwards of 20 years.

Great Truck - Tech Is A Little Dated
I just bought a new 2022. I have had it for a few months and I love it. It's great as a daily driver and has performed flawlessly in the light off-roading I have done so far. I don't like the infotainment system - it's dated, clunky, and non-intuitive. But I didn't buy this truck for the gadgets. I bought a great-looking, reliable truck that's a highly competent off-roader and I basically couldn't be happier.

My little upgrade at this weird time to buy 😕
Like the truck very much very similar to the 2019. But more features like keyfob, intermittent wipers, backseats and back sliding window. Lost the CD 💿 player but a better audio system.
Mediocre Truck at best
Bought a 2022 access cab 4x4 tacoma truck to go to a single vehicle since consumer reports had showed the Tacoma at the top of the list with a reasonable 70 plus overal rating. Currently I have a 2016 Chevy 2500 HD 4x4 diesel with 76k and had a 2014 honda civic lx with 140k I sold for the down on this piece. Both the Honda and Chevy put this truck to shame in terms of comfort and driveability. Now at 4000 miles on the truck, I actually wish I had my honda back as a daily driver, and I am definitely keeping my diesel and selling this to get a used civic or accord and will put the rest of the money back in the bank to see if toyota gets the Tacoma right in the redesign in 2024. The reason is the truck cannot hold its overdrive gears when trying to maintain speed on the freeway and it requires alot of throttle input which is straining the heck out of ankle and knee. Also, its shifts are clunker then the 73 k10 pickup my dad owns as a fun 4x4 truck. Further, beware, in test drives I did, I could not notice the freeway shifting and thought Toyota resolved the issue bc the multiple dealers I went too only allowed me to drive the truck to one exit on the freeway on flat ground which truck drives reasonable on flat ground and it has improved from earlier years which I test drove and were terrible even on flat freeway. Now owning the truck I can see this is a selling tactic there using. Nevertheless, I drive alot of freeway and am finding no matter how I position the seat my leg and ankle cramp bad in this truck from constantly having to give it throttle to maintain speeds with traffic between 70 to 80mph on the freeways. As such it's miserable for me to drive it and would not recommend this truck to anyone that drives alot of freeway. However, city driving it does decent, and shifts are reasonable with ECT pwr on. Also, city mpg is reasonable for the truck even in comparison to the diesel, so would recommend it for city drivers that dont drive on the freeway for long periods. Additionally, the main reason I went with the tacoma over others was because of its know solid reliability, but with how uncomfortable this truck is to drive I relealize now I should have rolled the dice on the Ford Ranger which was my second choice bc I will never be able to drive this piece for 5yr or 60k to get the warranty/ mileage out it and sadly was praying that cyclone we had in Santa Cruz would have flooded where I had it parked to get the insurance money out of this truck to save me the hassle of selling this truck in order to try and recoup back as much as I can from this piece of junk.

2022 Tacoma
Solid truck. Coming from a full size this truck has a lot of room with the double cab. The 4x4 is top notch for getting up muddy hills. Fit and finish is great and the truck does not feel under powered.

Good truck but not great
We purchased it for the resale value, but not sure what all the hype is about. The pros are its fun to drive and does very well off road. It has a good look and it is popular. The off road premium has a lot of features like safety and off road features. The cons are I would hate to get hit in that truck. Its not a solid truck. Everything is made light and cheap. The skid plate will dent as soon as you bottom out. The doors have no weight to them. The plastic trim is very thin. The seat position is very uncomfortable on long drives because it feels like you are sitting on the floor and your heads touches the ceiling. I don't feel I got what I paid for and if you want a true off-road vehicle, you have to spend $20k to replace the suspension, tires, and the skid plates. I would rather have a Chevy Silverado 1500 or a F-150. UPDATE: Other than the seating position I like everything about the truck except it’s reliability with 4x4. I got stranded in the snow and could not use traction control because it would not ingage. Wouldn’t go into 4wd low. Had to tow out. Today I am furious. Went to the desert put it in 4wd and got 2wd- 4wd mode malfunction stuck in 4wd. All mode indicators stopped working, once again no traction control or any switching abilities. Could not even get it back in 2wd. I have less than 5500 miles on it and can’t seem to go off road because that’s where it always breaks down. I think I’m done with the Tacoma! Done!

The Grey Lady rocks!
From it's unbelievable gas mileage for a midsize 4x4 truck to it's overall fit, finish and quality my Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport 4x4 is an amazing piece of engineering. I've owned two Ford Rangers, and was ready to buy another until I wandered into my local Toyota dealership, boy am I glad I did, my Tacoma rocks! you won't go wrong getting one, and L&S Toyota of Beckley WV is the dealership to deal with!

4 cylinder is a more refined driving experience
Bought the 4 cyl base SR double cab after renting two V6's and one 4 cyl, because the 4 cyl a more refined driving experience. Contrary to expectation, the 4 cyl is quieter than the V6 and has no vibration when sitting at a stop light. The transmission is not undecisive like it is on the V6. So overall the 4 cyl is more pleasurable to drive. Hurried suburban drivers will not like the 4 cyl, however, because it's acceleration is too slow. Hurried mountainous terrain drivers may also not like the 4 cyl because it loses speed on hills unless the driver uses a heavy throttle to cause the transmission to downshift to 4th gear. On level highways the 4 cyl really shines because you will find the truck's speed drifts up to 70-80 MPH despite just barely depressing the accelerator pedal. Ride quality is busier and more truck like than a car, but not to a bothersome degree. Engine exhaust noise during hard acceleration is noticeably more subdued on the double cab model vs the access cab. Road noise is low with the standard Toyo tires. Wind noise moderate. Seat comfort is good as the seats are well padded by modern truck standards and much better padded than late model Toyota cars.

Smooth
I like everything this truck has. I made my decision by talking to different folks on what would they buy if they were buying a new truck, and the history of the Toyota Tacoma.
Great truck, best midsize on the market.
I own a 2022 Tacoma 2x4 SR5 v6 double cab that I sold a 2021 Ranger for. While the Ranger was faster and had a few more useless features, it was a tin can and I had zero confidence in the resale value or longevity of the truck. As a result I quickly got rid of it and purchased my Tacoma. After owning the Tacoma for a year now I can confidently say it is a far better vehicle than the Ranger. The common gripes with the Tacoma include that the drivetrain, technology, and design are "outdated" to some people. I believe they are perfected... not outdated. The v6 could make more power down low in the RPMs and the auto trans could have better shiftpoints but even for how particular I am with vehicles these things are totally livable for a reliable and solid vehicle like the Tacoma. These trucks hold their value insanely well which cannot be said for any of the competitors like the Ranger, Colorado, Canyon (which I also owned and was a huge pile), and the Frontier (puke emoji). Tacoma has been the gold standard for midsize trucks since its inception and there's plenty of reasons why everyone else is playing catchup. I'm not a Toyota fanboy but let's face it, Toyota makes high-quality vehicles with excellent resale value and you cant say either of those things about the competitors. The Tacoma is a truck, it rides/drives like a truck, not a Cadillac... and I'm fine with that. With the insane prices of new vehicles I wanted to put my money in something that was tried and true and that had historical data of maintaining its value... both of which Tacoma offers unlike any of the competitors. I'm very happy with my truck and am fully aware and accepting of its shortcomings for QUALITY.

No limits with my Limited trim
Love my truck! I know some say that they do not like 6 speed transmission and how it changes gears at times, I say big deal. You may also hear some win noise from the windows or experience bumps more at times, yeah, it's a truck. What you will get with the Limited is a very nice vehicle that has great safety features and good craftmanship. The motor does run a bit loud, but I love that. The JBL system will not cause your ears to bleed but it is good enough for me. I know some may say the infotainment screen is dated at this point being late in the third gen's life, but I personally could not care less. The knobs are large, and the features are good enough for a redneck. Did I say I love this truck? Because I do!

Absolute Must Have!
Traded my 2017 SR5 for an allocated TRD off road dbl cab in the new blue crush metallic. Such a big upgrade in terms of drive ability, technology and comfort. The seats are far more comfortable than previous years plus the driver side has the electronic controls. Wish it had been passenger as well. The steering is much upgraded and is easier to maneuver. The throttle is more responsive to acceleration and the transmission does not lag as much as older years. The off-road features are amazing. Very easy and fun to use. Audio is far improved, love the apple car play. Very fortunate to be able to own this truck.

Little things that weren't included
Overall, great truck, but the tailgate does not lock with the doors, there is a kit you have to have installed to do that. Should be included in the premium package. And a 4x8 sheet of plywood does not fit flat in the bed like my old 2004 Tacoma. Very disappointing!

Below Expectations - way below
Excited to take delivery of my new 2022 Tacoma. These are made in Mexico, and the quality shows. There is trim on the back of the steering wheel loose and rattles. Open any of the windows, and the window tracks rattle in the wind. The painted fender flares show small indents from manufacturing (all four). The passenger seat rattles, this is loud and very annoying. Its like the seat floats in the track and any bump causes it to rattle, it stops when someone is in the seat. This truck has leather seats and the pass. seat leather also rubs on the centre console also making noise (I fixed it with a cloth). The Toyota service manager said if I can't live with the seat rattle, I should bring it back and he would fix it. I took it back, he said there are 2 other trucks in that day, he inspected them and they also rattle (works as designed and no repair is possible or needed. He said it looks like the seat is physically too big for the space). The radio has issues, no sound comes from the rear speakers unless the fader is 1 setting from being completely set to rear speakers. The heater on the left front footwell has barely a trace of heat coming out. In the winter, your toes go numb from the lack of heat, again, works as designed. I don't understand the love that people have for this truck. I hate, yes hate driving it, I put my 21 year old VW back on the road and that is my daily driver. The truck is strictly used a few times a year for towing the trailer or a dump run. The engine nd transmission are a bad combination, it hesitates, is slow to down shift on the highway. I had visions of buying a Lexus the next year for my wife.... bought BMW instead. NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A TOYOTA. I thought Toyota knew how to build cars, they should be ashamed to put out this crap. I could go on, but you get the idea. Now it's 2 years old, very low mileage, looking to trade it in.

Pretty solid truck
I have no serious concerns, other than the clutsy, uphill ride. It cannot seem to find an appropriate gear and as such revs too high. The only other issue is a popping sound from the front end, right side. Evertime i start the truck and have driven a few feet after turning out of my driveway or a parking spot. I've taken it to the dealer a few times, but alas "nothing wrong", is the given answer.

Disappointment and anger 👎
Unfortunately I sold my 2007 Tacoma and purchased a 2022 Tacoma…Mistake…My 2007 with 170k miles did everything the 22’ does and better!! Thank heavens it’s under warranty! Already had the transmission replaced at 40k! Disgusting!! From the very beginning it’s always been something. A noise, a whistle while accelerating, the steering linkage clinks and clunks while navigating reverse, bad transmission and more Bottom line, I sold a vehicle that I owned outright and picked up a $475 monthly payment for what? A warranty? Meanwhile, I owned my 2007 for over 8 years, put over 90k miles on that thing and the most I ever had to do with it is replace a U joint. That’s reliability To say that I’m disappointed is the understatement of the year! I’m pissed! And I’m about to go back to the dealer and ask them to put me in a vehicle that is trustworthy and worth the money I’m paying.
