Bad Rear Differentials

Bad rear differentials, 08/26/2017
2017 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4dr Double Cab 4WD 6.1 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
39 of 39 people found this review helpful

My rear differential made a loud howling noise on the first day of ownership and showed signs of failure after 300 miles, so it was replaced. The new rear diff makes the same noise. Toyota states the noise from the rear diff "is normal for all tacomas." I then drove other Tacomas at the dealership. Guess what, they all make this noise that you can hear over the radio at 50-60 mph. If your looking to buy i would stay away from these trucks. Google tacoma noisy rear diffs

Beware of the the howling/whining rear diff

Bad Rear Differential, 07/02/2017
updated 07/08/2019
2017 Toyota Tacoma SR5 4dr Double Cab 6.1 ft. SB (3.5L 6cyl 6A)

On my second day of ownership I noticed a howling/whining sound between 50-60 mph and a gas pedal vibration that was quite irritating. The dealer found metal shavings in the rear differential and replaced the rear differential on my brand new truck. The howling noise improved, but is still present. At times I can hear it over the radio. The gas pedal vibration improved, but I am still not happy. I took it back to dealership again. There's nothing the dealership can do further without Toyota's permission. I have a case opened with Toyota. We'll see what happens. The dealership had me test drive their other SR5 double cab long beds and they all sound worse than my truck. So this dealer has a lot full of trucks with bad rear differentials for sale. I have serious concerns about this truck and don't have any faith in Toyota. So much for reliability. 2019 update - The rear shocks had to be replaced because they were leaking oil. I've never towed more than a row boat and never gone off roading. The rear diff howling is still present and Toyota isn't recalling the SR5s for this issue.

I’ve been using Toyota Tacomas as my daily drivers for the last 15 years. What has kept me coming back is the peace of mind of knowing that the vehicle has been built with quality and reliability at the forefront. I have now owned a 2017 double cab TRD sport for a year and I can attest that that is not the case anymore. In a year, my truck has been in the shop several times for issues with the drive train. First, the transmission was low on fluid from the factory and I only noticed once it would not shift. Bear in mind that the owners cannot check the transmission fluid level; this can only be done by a mechanic under specific conditions. Even after the transmission was topped off, the transmission continued to perform sluggishly which required a second visit for an ECU reflash. A third visit to the shop required replacement of the transfer case and drive shaft after it started to generate a whistling noise. Currently, the vehicle is scheduled for another visit to the shop for a rear differential recall for fluid leak due to improperly torqued bolts; bad quality control. In addition to that, the suspension is squeaking which I’ve only been able to solve temporarily by soaking the leaf springs and shocks with lubricant. I’m not a picky person and don’t mind the run of the mill features or regular glitches of the infotainment system but the constant visits to the shop are really frustrating. Truck looks great but I’m currently looking at the Colorado and F150 to trade in this piece of junk. This Tacoma is not worth the $38,000 sticker price.

2017 Limited Edition has its limits

Rear differential failed at 750 miles. Replacement recalled for leaks 3 months later. Harsh ride compared to other trim levels, combination of hard leather seats and dated leaf spring supension creates fatigue on long rides. Steering wheel adjustment is a joke. Acceleration is disappointing when operating in Atkinson cycle but floor it and Otto cycle is great. Have not tried E85 fuel. Six speed transmission shifts up early but sufficient torque is available when pulling 3,000 lb. loaded trailer. 4 x4 Hi drive with traction control is good on ice. 4 x 4 Lo will climb through 3 ft. snow banks. The power moon roof and power rear window is perfectly matched and provides excellent ventilation at any speed. After 23,700 miles and 3 winters commuting in blizzard conditions, it is obvious that someone at Toyota HQ needs to get out of their office cubical and try winter driving. NO REAR WINDOW HEATER is both annoying and dangerous. Power sliding rear window fails with ice and snow. 4x4 traction and good snow tires make this a good winter vehicle. At 46,200 miles engine hesitates under load. No check engine warning. Dealer confirms no on-board diagnostic codes displayed or pending. So no fix available. Paint is also dissolving on tonneau cover leaving bare metal.

Toyota missed this mark with 3rd gen Tacoma

This is my ninth Toyota product, to include two previous Tacomas, a Tundra and a T-100, so I've come to expect a lot from Toyota based upon previous experience. This truck has been a big disappointment and has been at the dealership more than all my other Toyotas combined (talking weeks at a time). Beware of dealership modified vehicles. Toyota will not fix an issue with my front differential because the dealership installed a level kit. So I have a new truck with a 100,000 mile bumper to bumper warranty that Toyota will not fix; even though the dealership assured me the lift was covered when I purchased the vehicle. Issues with this truck are front differential grinding noise (which Toyota has a Technical Service Bulletin for, but refuses to perform on my truck), automatic transmission that wants to run in fourth gear instead of sixth at highway speeds, poor highway mileage of 18.5 mpg, squeaking rear leaf springs, etc., etc. etc. Now Toyota is recalling most 2016/17 Tacomas because of leaking rear ends that could cause a catostraphic failure. Toyota ain't what they used to be...... Update - It's been 10,000 miles since my initial review of this truck. During that time, my Toyota dealership has replaced the seals in the rear end (under a Toyota recall) and replaced the front differential under a recent TSB specific to 2017 Tacomas. On a good note, a recent 300+ mile trip yielded close to 20 mpg; an improvement over my initial review. Though I enjoy certain aspects of this truck, the quality issues and the gutless engine/transmission/gear ratio combo would keep me from purchasing another Toyota Tacoma if I had to replace this one tomorrow..... Update - Currently at 26,500 miles. Since my last update, the truck went into service to correct squeaking leaf springs and to receive the latest update to ECU/transmission software to address sluggishness at lower speeds in traffic; but still no help for the gear hunting at interstate speeds. For example, on a recent road trip where I experienced a 15mph headwind, I could not utilize cruise control without the truck shifting down to 4th gear and run at 3500 rpm. Sadly, I'm beginning to hear the familiar grinding noise from the front differential which was replaced at 14,000 miles. The fun never ends with this truck..... Update......Currently at 34,000 miles. Still of the opinion this engine/transmission combo will get you killed if you have to pull out into on coming traffic in a hurry. Transmission shifts to 3rd so fast, the engine just stumbles. During last oil change at dealership, I also noted a vibration when braking. They checked but blamed it on tire wear. So recently purchased 4 new tires, installation and alignment from dealership but still have the vibration. Guessing this will be my next battle with dealership/Toyota Corp. Also, grinding vibration from the replaced front differential is getting worse. This vehicle is really wearing me out. May be my last vehicle from Toyota unless their quality assurance processes improve. Update: currently at 44,000 miles. Still enjoying certain aspects of this truck but the engine/transmission combo is still a big let down. My 1996 Toyota T100 4x4 made less than 200 hp but felt like it could run circles around this truck. My wife’s Lexus RX with the same 3.5L engine as this Tacoma feels so much better as well. Can’t understand how Toyota engineers messed this truck up so badly and yet still sell them for up to $50K. Problem is, not sure I’d fine anything better from a different auto maker. We Americans have certainly lowered our expectations where quality And value are concerned.

After owning three other generations of Toyota Tacomas, I chose to get the newest generation. After three seperate returns to the dealer for transmission trouble, the transmission finally gave up out on a desert road in Mojave. Leaving me stranded with a $45,000 paperweight is maddening. These used to be great trucks. Now I cannot trust it to get me home. I had to lemon law mine for transmission failures.

Purchased this TRD sport in Blazing Blue Pearl in August of 2016. Highway driving I get over 24 mpg at 55-60 mph. Around this small town I am getting 19, which is much better than my 2015 Tacoma with the 4.0 V6. The truck is less comfortable and a little quieter. I have owned several Tacoma's and this one seems to have been rushed into production. The navigation works well as do all the apps. I am very disappointed with this truck. The transmission never knows what gear it wants to be in and going up the slightest incline will cause the transmission to downshift two to three times. I have been told that Toyota fashioned it this way to improve gas mileage but the improved gas mileage doesn't make up for the way it drives. They should have stuck with the old 5 speed which was impressive but I think they rushed this one through. For the cost of the vehicle I would think twice.

I have the 2.7 ltr 4 cyl and the truck was making a whining noise which I almost didn't take to the dealer because I thought it was no big deal.....well I was wrong for sure as the truck had a bad engine block from the factory and now Toyota is having to put a new engine in the truck. I hope this isn't the first of many problems but I have seen other issues w the truck from other owners such as the real diff going out etc. I would consider another truck and Toyota won't buy this one back and the dealer is refusing to swap for a new truck only saying if I give them more money then I can get the exact same truck I have.....I have purchased 4 other Toyotas and I am really disappointed with the lack of quality in this one....

Beware of the Recall for 2017 Tacoma

First off, my previous Tacoma was a 2010 model and only problems I had was the cabin fan acting up and getting replaced twice and put 170k miles on it. So I decided to move to the 2017 Tacoma and 7 months of owning it , I can say it's nice except, the transmission seems to slow down the engine with shifting. It did improve though but not 100% sold on this new type of transmission. On month 8, I went to dealer for noise issue on drivers side, then that turned into downing my truck for something completely different a recall. So month later, truck still at dealership and the recall has no fix yet for the leaking rear differential even though their letter clearly stated change gaskets and re torque.... I called headquarters and keep getting the run around about when they got a fix for this issue. As of today they say it can take up to 3-6 months to get a fix for recall. Now I don't know about ya'"ll planning to buy one but if it takes that long to fix a recall it's not worth buying. Nothing better than paying for a truck you can't drive due to their mistakes.... thanks Toyota you may of lost a long time customer after this mess....

Automatic Transmission sucks, shifting is wrong, manual shift does not work properly, cruise control / transmission over revs the engine even after topping hills wasting fuel and frustrating owner. Fuel mileage is poor for a Toyota partly because of the stupid transmission. when going down hill transmission downshifts to slow vehicle wasting fuel, cheap parts made in Mexico cab blower fan broke 11 months after owning, yah i have the one in a million defect. Poor hwy performance for a v6 again possibly the electronically controlled transmission. Comfortable to drive long distance, the extending steering wheel could have had more telescoping adjustment, Poor interior lighting, no bed lighting. you are not able to have accessory on without the dash lights on (and they are not adjustable) and it timing out and turning off, not good to listen to radio for more than 10 minutes without re-energizing the ignition. 18mpg hwy over a 3000 mile trip.

I was the 2nd owner of my 2005 Toyota 4Runner. One of the best vehicles I have ever owned. I bought a 2017 TACOMA SR5,THE WORST I HAVE EVER OWNED!!!!!! I lost sleep over it. I was up at night till 2-3am wondering what to do. The transmission was soo bad I thought I needed to get out and push, when putting it in drive there was a big clang, sounded and felt like I hit another vehicle. The suspension felt like I was on a boat with 6ft waves, and the idle was harindouse in the morning, up and down, up and down. When I hit any bump in the road, in front or rear, there was a clang. Sounded like metal to metal. TOYOTA SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THEMSELVES!!!!!!!!!! Not what I expected at all from Toyota. I only kept it for 6 weeks.

Auto transmission issues

I bought a new 2017 Toyota Tacoma Nov. 2016. Transmission slips, mostly first thing in the AM. with engine cold (I live in SW Florida so it's not real cold). When I park uphill in my driveway (front first) overnight it slips first thing in the AM., when I park downhill in my driveway (back in) it didn't seem to slip. Doesn’t seem to do it after it has been running a while. It also downshifts with an audible CLUNK @ some stops early in the day. I read online that there were similar issues with the 2016 models. Some were saying the transmission fluid was lowfrom the factory and some would say it was a factory code that needed to be downloaded that corrected it. Either way there is an issue. Engine and transmission don’t seem to be in sync when taking off. Very sluggish especially if I’m turning hard at the same time. Hesitates, engine skips sometimes going down the road. Brought to the dealer, they check the fluid which was spot on and they downloaded the latest download for the transmission. Stopped slipping BUT the engine and transmission don’t seem to be in sync when taking off still. Hesitates, engine/transmission skips or I should say bucks sporadically going down the road at different speeds. Mostly on light acceleration. I brought it back to the dealer again and after them talking to Toyota techs they told me it was the characteristics of the transmission (flaring) and they could do nothing about it @ this time. I test drove another same model and it did the same thing. I am contemplating on trading it for an American truck now or I might hold onto it for a while longer to see if they come up with a fix. I know they had a PILE of same issues with the 2016 models according to some forums I read. I had a 2006 Tacoma for 10 yrs with absolutely ZERO issues and loved it. I would say the total redesign was an error on their part. Why did they ever change something that wasn't broken?

I was very excited to buy this truck, and thought it would be the perfect vehicle for me. Everything is great about it, except the power-train. I cannot pinpoint the issue to fuel delivery, mapping, engine stuttering, misfire, or transmission, but it can be horrible to drive at certain speeds and RPM's. On top of this, the rear differential howls at certain speeds, and began leaking fluid with under 2K miles. My vehicle was not on the recall for this known issue. When I brought the truck in to a dealership, I was told it is "normal characteristics for the vehicle" The power delivery is so unpredictable it can be borderline dangerous, and the rear differential is leaking fluid and apparently that is "normal" I am seriously considering taking a huge financial loss on this truck and trading it in for something that is not so horrendous do drive. With this many issues so early in its life, I am seriously questioning the reliability of this truck, and will be looking at other manufacturers in the future. Other than the POWER-TRAIN! the truck is great. Awesome off road, comfortable inside, and does everything I need.

So many of these reviews focus on Off Road performance but like most of us it's a too the store or work vehicle. When you test drive this vehicle please find a roadway that you can travel 65 - 75 mph. Hills and curves will also help with this. I'll get right to the point. This transmission will shift constantly. Especially when Cruise is on. I mean a lot. Too the point that like myself you'll think something is wrong with the vehicle but according to the dealer it's normal. Thankfully I don't travel Highway miles all that much but the few long trips I did make.....WOW. Other than that I'm happy with the truck. It's my 2nd Tacoma. I can say that a 3rd may not happen unless Toyota takes care of this issue. It's definitely a game changer.

Faulty SPS, causes roll backs

The truck rolls back when stopped on an incline (ie red light, stop sign) on dry roads & the SPS kicks in. The truck then doesn't allow the operator to move forward, it just keeps on rolling back and clicks. I almost had a couple of accidents because of this. I brought the truck to the dealer & recreated the problem with a technician in the vehicle. He said that he's never seen anything like that. I left the truck to get fixed. Later that day the dealer called me back and said "they have recreated the issue with other new vehicles and also contacted the Toyota engineers. The engineers advised that it was designed like that and I would need to live with it."...What??? I need to live with this? This is totally UNACCEPTABLE. This is a MAJOR SAFETY ISSUE!!! The dealer also said they can't do anything about the issue and referred me back to Toyota. I have made repeated calls to Toyota to get nowhere. They say the truck was designed that way and has no manufacturing defects. I tried to tell them this is a major design flaw but they are brushing me off. I asked them "Are they waiting for someone to get killed" ?They didn't respond. For a automaker to know they have a major safety issue in their product and do nothing about it is very concerning. Just like the airbags...they're waiting for people to die before they do anything!!!!!

Below is a previous review I wrote. I would not purchase this truck again. Some time back I was contacted by Toyota saying that this vehicle was at risk of rust to the frame. They had this issue at least 20 years ago as well--- you mean they have not taken steps to fix it? Is it cheaper for them to do after-sales stop-gap repairs than address the issue at the source? Point is, how many other corners have they cut? Obviously many. Not the same truck they used to make. Don't be fooled. I started to hear engine knocking at less than 30,000 miles, and at times the automatic shifting is noticeably rough. There is a lot more road noise in this than in other trucks I have had. The head rests are VERY uncomfortable. I will think twice before buying a Toyota truck again. The truck is just loud, and I will never buy another Toyota until they fix the head rest issue. I am not happy with this truck. My Ford was more comfortable and quieter.

Before your purchase please check out the owner forums and reviews - specifically regarding the engine and transmission. After owning many long lasting and fantastic vehicles from Toyota, I never thought to do much research given my ownership history - my bad and lesson learned. My truck's issues included a transmission which continued to hunt for the proper gear regardless of grade or terrain, a hood which vibrated constantly at highway speeds due to multiple broken welds which could easily be seen from underneath, and unexplained engine power loss at high speeds. Dealership was never able to help with the transmission or engine glitches. After four weeks of driving in frustration I had enough. I know I am not alone, just read the forums and reviews from others.

I am very disappointed and unhappy with my 2017 Toyota Tacoma. Having owned two previous Tacoma's, Toyota really missed the mark on this truck. The truck has very poor acceleration and the transmission constantly shifts hunting for the right gear. This is very annoying on the freeway. Went on a 900 mile trip and the truck and averaged approx. 15 miles to the gallon. Everything else about the truck is outstanding.

After doing a lot research and talking to people who own other tacomas, I decided to get one. After previously driving a 13 Camry se and 14 RAV4 limited, I've got to say for a truck, Toyota has done an incredible job. Everything seems more durable and a lot easier to keep clean than my previous Toyotas. The look of this vehicle I can't stop looking at it. My parents just bought 16 Chevy Silverado 2500hd and although it's an amazing truck as well but impressed that a truck that's $13k less comes with a bed liner. The ride is great and people complain about the seats, I'm 511 and body builder build and I'm perfectly comfortable. I do wish there was height adjustable but I'm still comfortable. I love that the speed limit pops up on the instrument cluster. Gas mileage, this is a truck, not an unibody vehicle, but averaging 20.4 in mixed driving and lots of Boston traffic. Wish I got tech package with blind spot etc like rav but can't have everything. After test driving a 17 Colorado, I feel I got more bang for my buck. Bedliner, bed power outlet, keyless ignition, and the best resale value of any value on the road and it was kind of no brainier. Everyone I ask how you like your Tacoma always says I love it. I couldn't be happier and can def feel this truck will last a long time. My daily commute is hour to work and back and I don't regret getting rid of my rav. I'm comfortable and just love the ride after all this is a truck and seems to me lot quieter than I thought it would be. But this is my opinion do your research and test drivers, ask people how they like their tacomas and make your decision, personal preference is key these days....

I wanted Toyota reliability and quality and the offroad capabilities. Tacoma seemed like everything I wanted. but my daily commute on the highway is very frustrating. it's severely underpowered and difficult to keep steady speed as transmission is shifting gears constantly. acceleration is poor and even other cheap low end cars pass this truck all the time. I have to floor it to climb even the slight uphill. it's really a bad driving experience. update 2 years later: that auto transmission is pathetic. the worst is when I drive around 60-70 mph and the transmission can't decide which gear to stay in. feels very under powered. my opinions are unchanged.

Great Truck with transmission issues

Love the looks, interior and exterior of the Tacoma as well as the comfort, bells, and whistles so-to speak! The only issue I have is with the transmission that is constantly shifting gears even at freeway speeds. Signed on to the Toyota Owners site and see that others have the same complaint although some owners have posted a specific computer fix for the transmission program which I will insist on at my first service appointment. Have had the truck for over a year now. The salesman who sold me the truck spent some time with me and explained the alternate transmission option (+S-). This has somewhat alleviated the downshifting problem as it acts, more or less, like a stick shift without the clutch. When driving around locally, keeping the transmission in gear 4 works fine. When doing freeway speeds, keeping the transmission in gear 6 seems to almost eliminate the downshifting issues I had when using the automatic "D" . Driving this truck is now a more pleasant experience!

Worst Truck I've ever purchased

I purchased this truck in October of 2016. At 500 miles I took it back in and told them the truck had no pull and was shifting terrible. After letting the dealership look at the truck the only answer I got was it's a "Toyota Problem". I called and got Toyota involved and got a case brought on the truck. At 1000 miles I was still complaining about the performance with no help from the dealer or Toyota. I kept taking it back and at 15,000 miles I had had enough of the run around and wanted to just get rid of it and try again. The dealer offered me $4000.00 less than what I owed. This is after the Service manager had told me that I was not the only one complaining about the truck. I've been driving the truck and now at 55k my son can run faster than the truck. I wanted to stay with a Tacoma because I've still got a 2004 double cab 6 cyl that has been one the best trucks I've ever owned. After all of the time and run around I'm getting away from the Tacoma because of no one wanting to own up to the problem I'm having with the 2017.

Beautiful Car, Terrible Engine

I recently sold my 2002 Ford Sport Trac and purchased a 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road. Boy oh, boy do I regret that. First off, this truck is not very cheap with a sticker price around $38,000 you expect a top quality truck. While the appearance of the truck looks sharp the engine and transmission are an absolute disaster. I live in an area with lots of hills and this truck struggles to conquer even the most minor of hills. I find myself having to mash down on the gas pedal to get to the top of any hill. Merging on the freeway is an ordeal as well and once you finally make it up to the highway speeds good luck maintaining that speed. The transmission is one of the worst if not thee worst transmission I've ever come across. (and I've owned Ford, Acura, Honda, Chevy, and Nissan vehicles). I cannot even begin to tell you how aggravating it is just driving around town. The transmission feels the need to downshift whenever it can and sometimes after accelerating from a stop the transmission struggles the find a gear and the RPM's shoot up to 3.5 and thats with an easy acceleration. The downshifting is by no means subtle either, you will rock forward and back and know when the truck is downshifting. I am completely disappointed and baffled. How, after all these years of making trucks has Toyota manged to ruin a perfectly good truck. If it was up to me I would've purchased a Chevy Colorado. Overall, I regret my decision to buy this truck.

This is a truck, not a truck on a car platform like the Ridgeline. I like alot of what reviewers don't like about it. I like the high step in - 20 inches...which means it will get through the snow drifts at the end of my long driveway. Its a smooth ride as trucks go. The bed is deep, where the Ridgeline is shallow. The instrumentation display is much better than the Chevy/GMC IMO. Sure you sit with your legs a bit straight in the front seat, but once again, I know it will get through anything without bottoming out. The resale value, and reliability are a the top of the segment. Its a blast to drive. Sure it can be a bit sluggish if you are trying to maximize the MPGs merging on the freeway, but all you have to do is either press the ECT button, or push harder on the peddle to overcome it. My 16 year old did that and actually improved the MPG. Go figure.

I bought a 4x4 2017 Tacoma thinking I can use it as a outlander vehicle but before I could use it, the front bumper valance was washed away during the tax day flood here in houston. I bought a replacement and installed it and even drilled the underside to mount two bolts and nut to secure it. But when hurricane Harvey came it was washed away again with my plate number with it. How in the world would you consider this a an offroad vehicle if a foot deep of water will rip the front bumper valance out. I emailed Toyota customer care and was told to call but when I did, I was informed that I was the only one who was complaining about it. So I went to sterling McCall Toyota dealer and again was told that I should only drive my vehicle on roads with less water, for 4x4 is only good for traction but not for a foot deep of water. Frankly , I'm very disappointed!!

I am a 60 year old man. I have bought and owned 5 Tacomas in my life time. Never any problems with the ones I owned previously until now. I traded in a 2006 Tacoma Extended Cab for a new 2017 Toyota Extended Cab with the 3.5 L Atkinson motor and 6 speed automatic transmission. Something is terribly wrong with this truck. It feels like I am towing something all the time and the gas mileage is horrible. Going into a head wind or up a incline in the road causes the motor to down shift constantly. I drive this truck about 75% of the time on interstate I135 to my job which is a 41 mile round trip. We have our fair share of wind here in Kansas so I usually catch having to drive into the wind going to work or home. Driving into the wind with the cruse control on is disturbing to me. The truck is constantly down shifting and seems under powered or geared too high. I never run the truck hard and always drive the 75mph speed limit but my gas mileage on the interstate has been as low as 11.8 mpg on windy days to 16.7mpg on normal days, a big difference in the 23mpg listed on the window sticker for highway mpg. Yep! this ones a real dog. I don't know what the final outcome will be with this truck but I do regret that I bought it. NOT AS ADVERTISED... I have been a Toyota man since 1985, never any disappointment in the vehicles I have owned before now. I hope they can fix it or make it right soon. This is not what a Toyota Tacoma should be like. I have always bought them for their performance, durability, longevity, and trade in value. Toyota should be ashamed!!! After owning the truck for 2 years, I am still disappointed with the vehicle. I can get better gas mileage not using the cruse control. I think Toyota should go back to making the Tacoma's with the 5 speed automatic transmission. I own a 2013 Highlander with the 5 speed automatic transmission and the 3.5 liter motor and love the vehicle. The third generation Tacoma's are not the same pickup as the earlier models.

2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road, 3.5L Manual

Mileage: Approximately 1100 U.S. Miles to date and climbing OK, so I’ve owned Toyotas in the past, so some of this review relating to reliability and resale is related to my previous Toyota experience with safety, maintenance, and reliability, which were all totally awesome, by the way. Toyota is the Gold Standard when it comes to reliability and resale. This truck was purchased as an immediate replacement for a European lemon I had to offload quickly. Since I didn’t have that much time to shop, I went with what I knew and trusted from my younger years: Toyota trucks. After reading the reviews on this site, and elsewhere, I chose to go with a manual transmission. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier with a decision! This truck has a great manual…it does feel “sloppy” when compared to a sports car, but this is a truck and for a truck, it is second to none. You can shift with your pinky and the clutch is smooth as a baby’s butt. Paired with a manual transmission and that 3.5L V6 is a fine sized engine for this truck. All truck owners have horsepower envy (part of owning a truck), but we all have to work with what we’ve got and for a mid-sized truck, this engine is perfectly fine when paired with the manual transmission. With the manual I have experienced none of the complaints I saw in other reviews; this truck, when paired with the manual, keeps up just fine on the highway. I am a bit worried about towing, since it doesn’t appear to reach peak torque until 4600RPM (that’s pretty darn high), BUT that’s really just a clutch wear issue and I am 100% confident that the geniuses at Toyota managed to install a heavy duty clutch that can take it. Other benefits of a manual: You embrace your masculinity, you remove the nannified computer installed between you and the transmission, you have superior control off-road or in inclement weather, you will cast aside those millennial stereotypes, you can downshift to third and comfortably blow past that big rig on the highway, the manual has better low-end torque in first, you’ll know how to drive a rental car in countries besides the U.S. and Canada, etc. Really, the list just goes on and on…I believe there are dissertations written about the benefits of a manual in any off road vehicle, many likely involve Toyota trucks as the subject of said dissertation. Drawbacks of a manual: You’ll probably have to special order it or spend countless hours searching online. I had to fly 1000 miles and drive it home to get one. The manual Tacos literally fly off the dealer lots and the dealers won’t even swap them…they’re guaranteed to sell. Most of the dealers who are allocated a manual Taco mark it as already spoken for just to avoid dealer swaps. lol. In fact, if you do manage to find one on a lot, its more than likely it was a special order that someone backed out of and you’ll need to be prepared to pay MSRP (I didn’t, but that’s because the folks at Sonic Automotive in Columbus, OH are cool cats and, at least from my dealings, were great to work with). Otherwise, if you have the patience, just order exactly the truck you want and wait a couple months. If I hadn’t had to immediately offload an unreliable lemon daily driver, I would have gladly just ordered one. Especially now that I’ve had a chance to drive one…well worth the wait if that’s what you have to do! Note: Basically, the only drawback is trying to find a manual…that’s a darn good drawback to have! I bought a base model TRD off road. Only option was the tow package and a few minor accessories (rubber mats, etc.). The base model has the PERFECT amount of onboard technology. Bluetooth for hands free phone, basic navigation that is reasonably intuitive, a basic touch screen infotainment system, and…AC and cruise control. The interior is nice, but not so nice you worry about getting the inside a little dirty. It is a truck folks. The vehicle controls, in true Toyota fashion, are logical, and give excellent tactile feedback. Yes, knobs on the radio ARE important, despite the opinion of one reviewer. It is very important to be able to turn the volume up without being required to take your eyes off the road. Regardless, there are also steering wheel controls that serve this purpose as well. Knobs for climate control are important for the same reason. In my opinion, there is nothing more dangerous than a driver having to take their eyes off the road to perform constant and simple tasks such as adjusting temperature or the volume on the radio. This little truck is solid and, so far, lives up to, and exceeds, my previously pleasant, happy, and satisfied Toyota truck experiences! While it won’t be my daily driver for very long (again, this was an emergency purchase), I intend to definitely keep this baby in the family for quite some time. I simply cannot imagine a better vehicle for a teenager to learn in and drive.

This has been a great truck as far as handling, 4 wheeling, and the amenities inside the cab. My biggest complaint with it is that it spends way too much time gear searching. Especially on the freeway. If this rig was a manual, it would be a 5 star rig across the board. It has sufficient acceleration off the line, but as son as you get to about 30-35 MPH it lugs down. It seems to be geared toward fuel conservation. There is an option called the ECT(electronically controlled transmission) that you can push to eliminate some of that. But it still shifts up way too fast. I just bought it 3 weeks ago so I'm still getting used to it. Everything else about it is great. If you don't mind lousy gas mileage you can always use the ECT. However the combined fuel mileage has not been anywhere near 22.5. It's more like 17.5 city, and 20.5 highway. Time at the pump sucks, but the rest of the truck makes it totally worth it.

Previous truck was tundra and as expected the Tacoma is much less comfortable on long trips. Tacoma handles well, and is much easier to maneuver in tight spaces in town, but suffers in driving experience because of engine. Does not feel like anywhere near 300 hp and with maximum torque way up near redline does not accelerate well at all. If I drove it without knowing I would say about 180hp. Seems to want to cruse at 60-65mph. Will do 70 but mileage suffers dramatically. Otherwise I like the truck just fine, but I hate the engine. Update: 5/18: Well, traded 2wd for tacoma with 4WD after getting stuck 3 times. So, no more issues with that problem. Engine with no change same gearing complaints. The 2018 has been upgraded so now has lane assist, automatic braking, and worst of all - adaptive cruise control. Wish I had somehow traded for a 2018 with 4WD. Also, tailgate stays locked if truck is locked, so you can't just go out in driveway and put down the tailgate. Nannying me to death....

Truck has no low end torque. Up and down shifts with slight road grade increase. If cruise control is set truck never attempts to power through wind gusts or small hills-it simply does not try, it responds to change by immediately down shifting screaming RPMs. Truck acts like it has baby squirrels under the hood singing "I think I can, I think I can, hell no I am taking a break" . Will never ever by Toyota Again will never ever support Toyota. Toyota sells trucks with marketing lies not product value or performance.

To be honest, I was not in the market for a mid-size truck when I started shopping for a new vehicle, but after a ton of research, the Taco offered the best "bang for the buck" so to speak. My 2007 Avalanche was stolen, so I was forced into the new vehicle market. That Avalanche was the best truck I ever owned hands down, so I was pretty biased going to the various dealer lots. After driving the new GM's, and Fords and in seeing their cost, I opted to go to a used car lot. They had a 2015 Tacoma TRD PRO that I test drove and I felt really good in the truck. Since the cost of the 2015 was only $4k cheaper than what a 2017 brand new one was,(gotta love how these hold value) I went for the new. After 4 months of ownership, I thought I'd throw this review out. First out, the truck is really a good truck. It does the daily commuter routine really well, and the V6 has the oomph to get out in front of traffic when you are merging if you really get on the gas pedal. The off road capability is incredible and really impressed me on some back country fire roads on my occasional fishing trips. I haven't used it yet, but I really do like the piece of mind the "Crawl Control" gives me. The gas mileage is as advertised, but I'm a bit of a lead foot, so you may even beat the estimated if you are light on the gas pedal. All the "technology" features are user friendly and intuitive. The real problem I have with this truck is the size. I'm a pretty big guy, 6'1" 240, so the truck with me, the wife, kid and dog makes for a pretty cramped feeling that I never got with the full size truck. If you are coming from a full size to this class of vehicle, definitely work with the dealer to see if you can test it out over a weekend so you fully grasp the space you are going to lose. My other big issue is the carpet is a pain to clean dog hair out of. For some reason it acts like velcro when you try to vacuum it up, but that isn't that huge of an issue because duct tape works wonders for this task. It just takes a lot longer to clean out than my old vehicle did, so again, I'm biased. My third gripe is the seats. I've tried every setting they have and I can't get that comfortable, its almost like I'm between settings - either my back is too upright or I'm too laid back. Also, not being able to lower the seat brings me to bump my head on the roof on bumpy terrain. This is annoying but not overly so. Toyota really needs to have a power seat function. For the money, you can't beat this trucks functionality and of course they hold their value really well. The amount of accessories you can get from both Toyota and 3rd parties is incredible, and they add even more functionality to a very capable and functional truck. Overall I'm happy with my purchase.

The 2017 Tacoma is Very, very, uncomfortable getting in and out of vehicle if your 6ft tall. The steering wheel cannot be adjusted to allow you to get in or out comfortably. Head room needs to be at least a couple inches taller. The muffler is loud and noisy inside the vehicle. Acceleration from a stop is sub-standard; the six speed transmission at times will cause you to accelerate fast, other times not catch-stall then over accelerate. On the freeway with just slight hills the transmission does not know what gear it wants to be in, constantly surging and slowing. Gas mileage has gotten better with age/mileage. New I was averaging 13, now with 28000 miles on it, I average 18. I wish engine had a little more power and towing capacity were better, maybe 7000 to 7500.

I purchased this vehicle to replace a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Sport that had a 6 speed manual trans. The Tacoma was purchased with a 6 speed manual transmission for more control for driving on the beaches in Delaware to surf fish. The vehicle with only 500 miles on the odometer is getting 21 mpg. The performance, ride, handling, quality.....everything is outstanding. I guess the big plus is that I purchased a 6 speed manual transmission, and not an automatic which many reviews complain about shifting and being sluggish. Not so with the 6 speed manual. My recommendation is buy with the manual transmission. Toyota is on the cutting edge for safety and technology. The Tacoma comes with the Qi Wireless charging pad built into the tray area in front of the floor shifter. I have a iPhone 6, so I bought a Benzalel Latitude Qi Wireless Charger Case for my iPhone 6. It works perfectly....wireless charging. If you have a Samsung you should be able to wireless charge your phone in the Tacoma without having to buy a special case. I have no issue with the seating height of the front seats being 6'1". My wife who is 5'4" loves the passenger seat height. I did get the factory Toyota Predator Running Boards installed at the dealership so that my wife could get in easier. The higher height of the truck makes for driving on the beach and crossing sand dune entry points very easy. Zoom, Zoom. One year later, I still love my ‘17 Tacoma Sport TRD 4x4. Love the 6 speed manual transmission. Love the ride and handling. The extent of my off reading is riding the beaches of Delaware Surf Fishing. Now have 9000K on my vehicle. Update.....December 11, 2019 My ‘17 Tacoma Sport TRD 4x4 is now 2 1/2 plus years old, and has 21,000 miles. I still love the truck. Some minor issues have been addressed and corrected under warranty. I still highly recommend the Tacoma, and still love having the 6 Speed Manual Transmission.

The engine has been a point of contention so I will make this short, normal every day driving you would never notice and by purchasing a manual transmission I am not subject to the "indecisive" automatic. I will say that it could do with a little more low end torque and wish there was a supercharger/turbo option. Overall I love the truck and off-road comfort is amazing without sacrificing the on road sensibility. Update Nov 17: Still love the truck and no major issues to report. Only one thing that I need to follow up with the Service dept. is a noticeable humming when cruising in 4th gear as the accelerator is just being engaged/disengaged. Nov. 18 Etune system does random reboots usually when using Bluetooth audio and a call comes in. Need to get to Toyota to diagnose. An irritation for sure, but I still love the truck. April. 19 Toyota fixed the issue with the Entune head unit in December and it has been solid since. No other issues or concerns. May 2021: Truck is still going strong after 4 years with no major issues or irritations. Been all over Nevada, on and off-road with nary a complaint.

Should Have Had Longer Test Drive

I purchased this vehicle based mostly on Toyotas reputation. I have 13500 miles on the vehicle and the engine has always had a stutter during idle, and it seems to be pulling itself apart from its motor mounts on acceleration. Toyota should not offer a 4 cylinder on a truck this big. It is downright unsafe. I can hardly merge into traffic. The suspension is overly stiff and has about thrown me off the road before when hitting a series of small pot holes on the interstate. I know it is a truck, but there needs to be some dampening. It does a poor job of handling corners. This is all unloaded. I have not even bothered to put any type of load in the vehicle. Today the blower fan went out completely and suddenly with a horrible noise in 95 degree weather. I pulled the part out and of course a cheap plastic insert connection to the drive shaft sheared off. This type of connection should be reinforced - unacceptable, and cutting corners in a bad way - of course made in China. Dealer is back ordered on the replacement. Did I mention I only have 13500 miles on the vehicle. As I was complaining this morning my wife showed me a recall for the rear drive coupling. Really!

do not buy 2017 toyota tacoma. severe shaking, transmission is all over the place. they acknowledge the shaking but say its normal. NOT! As for trans. they cant replicate it so( the end.) They will not do anything about it. This is the worst experience buying a new vehical. Especially since so expensive an now im stuck with it.

Worst POS mid-sized truck out there

Consumer Reports named this POS "worst mid-sized truck"...they are right on the money. Bought a 2017 TRD Off Road V6 manual in November 2016, had problems almost from the beginning. Among the many I've had or have: stumbling/hesitation on acceleration, horrible fuel mileage (under 16mpg combined, no towing, no hard driving), horrible pinging/knocking/clutch shudder in first gear when cold (whole car shakes), very weak brakes even with upgraded rotors and pads, clutch pedal squeak, scratched up instrument cluster, high pressure fuel pump whine, noisy windows, sound from gas pedal when under heavy acceleration on freeway, howling noise from rear differential, now my suspension is creaking too. Two dozen visits to local dealers, almost every time everything is normal or operating properly...they refuse to fix anything. Toyota and their dealers are inhuman monsters, I will never buy another Toyota and I tell everyone I meet to stay away from all Toyotas!

Owned a Tacoma with an automatic transmission. I felt the transmission algorithm was not optimal. I traded for a manual transmission model. Very happy with my decision. It's a great truck all around.

Researching mid size trucks I tested the Tacoma. Poor acceleration, gears changed like for no reason, bouncing back and forth. New vehicle? My god. I wanted to scream. Decided to have a sit down with sales. Told him was shopping and would be in touch. Will try another dealership and drive. Thanks to this review board this buyer is very aware. PS. I previously tested a Colorado and none of these problems were present. These problems may just be the roll of the dice. When I make my final choice (from on line inventory) my test drive will resemble the scene from the flick ‘Used Cars’ where the race car driver poses as a buyer and takes the ‘57 Chevy for a test drive. BTW, I do all my negotiations via E mail, I pick my exact vehicle and go from there. I don’t let them treat me like I’m buying a timeshare property.

I waited months for this truck. I could hardly hold my excitement in when the dealer finally called and said it had arrived. I now have 4500 miles on it, and am considering selling it. This truck cannot maintain highway speeds in Montana (80MPH). The constant shifting drive me crazy. I have two 4.0 V6 Toyota's, they are far superior to my new truck on the highway. I love the rest of the truck and would be 100% satisfied if it had a better engine. update: traded it in on a 2018 4runner TRD PRO. love it

I have had a 1996,2006, and now a 2017 Tacoma. All were access cab v6 4x4. This one is by far the best. The ride difference from the 2006 to the 2017 is unreal. It feels like you are riding in a sedan and not a truck. The engine is noticeably stronger than my 2006 which also had a V6. All of my trucks have been manuals. I was pondering switching to the automatic this time but I was reading way too many negative things about it. The manual on the 2017 shifts amazingly smooth. There is minimal to no driftback unless you are on a steep incline. My 2006 would scream at 70mph. I have to let off the gas on the highway with this one because before I know it I am doing 80. I average anywhere between 18-22mpg depending how heavy I am being on the pedal. The fuel mileage is the only negative thing I can at about the truck, and it is not even that bad. The seats are comfortable and controls are simple yet efficient. I would highly recommend the truck to anyone looking for a beefy midsize. I would go with the manual as it is a breeze to drive.

Good truck, weak transmission

The truck is well equipped and the ride is quiet. The steering is a bit mushy, but acceptable for the offroad suspension. The biggest issue is that the tranny blows. It seems to default to 4th gear at a stop. Hard acceleration results in a huge lag while it performs multiple downshifts, then slams into action. At driving speeds, it has a tendency to hunt for the right gear, often unsuccessfully. The "sport" shifting mode helps, but is more of a gimmick to me. This is with the updated firmware TSB applied. Hopefully, Toyota will improve this firmware. I should have tried the manual, because otherwise the drive-train feels tight. The engine does not seem to have alot of low end torque, but it is hard to judge with the weak transmission. I also had an issue with a defective fuel injector on day one, but Toyota handled this acceptably for me (I live close enough to dealership). Also, the advertised mileage is pretty unrealistic. What I have seen is around 16/19 (as opposed to 18/23 on the sticker). Update Feb 2019: I've had the truck for over a year >10k miles. It has been solid. It is hard to say if the transmission has "learned" my driving habits or I have learned it's, but it does not seem to hunt for the right gear as much. A few issues with dashboard squeaks were addressed by the dealer. Same mediocre mileage. Pretty nice ride though.

Absolutely no power at all. This is 7th Tacoma-- worst ever. Lucky to do 60 passing, then is wound so tight. Shifts all time-- crazy. Lost power 3 times now, computer at dealership showed no codes first time, has done 2 more times ( total 3 ) goes back Mon. Trying to find a answer from some one in states-- cannot only be mine. Like the black/ red design interior first ever.

Recently traded in my 2015 Tundra for a 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road. Paid almost exactly for the Tacoma what I paid for the Tundra two years ago (approx $37,500). I have driven Tundras since 2008 and loved them but I thought downsizing would be good since I rarely used the Tundra's full size capability and only averaged 15 MPG for mostly highway driving. So the Tacoma looks good and has a smaller engine, so I guessed better mileage and ease of parking at Wal-Mart. I have driven it about 800 miles so these are my first impressions. Driver seat is VERY uncomfortable for me and I can't adjust it to fit me properly. I am 5' 10" and 200 lbs. THERE IS NO POWER DRIVER SEAT. My wife's Honda CRV has a power memory seat for gosh sakes!!. C"mon Toyaota. Wake up to who is buying this vehicle. Printed pattern on the seats looks like a design from the 1980's. The engine is my other complaint. Again, I am used to the big V-8 Tundra, but the Tacoma just feels under powered. When you push down on the gas pedal it seems like it has to downshift to go faster, or entering the highway seems to tax it's capabilities. Mileage so far is about 18MPG while I expected at least 20. The electronics and navigation are easy to use. If you want one, take it on a much longer test drive than I did. I regret my decision to buy this vehicle. Next time I would look at the Colorado, and I hate any GM product and have told my wife to shoot me if I ever even considered a GM product. Please Toyota, help save my life and upgrade the Tacoma! ⁸ UPDATE: After driving the Tacoma for 9 months, I traded it in on a new Tundra and my life was back to normal.

I waited to make this review after 1 year of driving. I love the high stance and ground clearance that have always made Tacoma’s stand apart. So far I love driving it. I am happy with the power and the peace of mind knowing it will last me many years of trouble free driving. After all, it’s the same engine found in Lexus, Sienna, Highlander and Camry. I agree the transmission likes to shift to the next gear quickly but I am getting decent mileage. Averaging 21-22mpg on regular fuel. If I get tired of the early shifting, I can press the ECT button and I’ve got plenty of power to keep or pass fellow motorists with ease. I can tell the interior material will last. The cloth seats and interior plastic feel very durable. I personally love the seating position. Toyota could put a little more features in the vehicle but the lack of cutting edge features is what helps keep Toyota reliable. Love the power sliding rear window. I get plenty of compliments. Update At 30k miles I have had a great experience. Still drives like new. So far I’ve had to replace the rear brake light due to a leak and battery died right at 2 year mark. Other than that truck has been very reliable.
