New is not better!
be sure that you know the changes for the new style. the console glovebox is now useless because it is too far back. the truck is WAY to high. the bed is way to high. wish I had my 2012 back...………...I DO NOT LIKE THIS TRUCK AT ALL.

First time Tacoma Owner - Love it
I love this truck. Gas mileage is OK, but it's a truck so I didn't expect to get super mileage. My only complaint it there is not trim package that has a power seat or a manual way to raise and lower it. After 4000 miles, I'm used to it. I considered a Ford and Chevrolet that are bigger, but went with the Tacoma because of the styling, resale value, and I don't need a full size. If you are very tall, this might not be the truck for you. Or any mid-sized truck.

Replaced a 2001 Tacoma TRD. It was a great truck that was very dependable. If this Tacoma is 1/2 as good I will be very satisfied. 1 year later still very happy with it. Nice riding and great power. Now 1 1/2 years. Still love it. Now 2 years and still love it. Now 3 + and still love it. No problems.

Could Be The World's Greatest Truck
I just love my Tacoma SR5. For starters, I live in S. Florida where there are no hills, so I don't have any issue with the Transmission shifting. I hand wash my car, so I don't have any automatic car wash concerns or regrets. I have 2wd and don't like to get my truck dirty, so not at all concerned with off road capability issues although the general consensus is that the 4wd Tacoma is capable in that arena. There are approximately 4,071,000 miles (6,552,000 km) of roads in the United States, so why out of your way to off road? The truck carried approximately 2,000 lbs of tile from store to my house without issue, and without bottoming out the suspension. The truck carried a whole pallet of paver brick to my house without issue. The truck is fun to drive, keeps up with traffic, easy to park, gets decent mileage at 20mpg, and can get to 90 real quick on the highway. I can pass cars that are passing cars (when I'm road raging California Style, LOL!) I have owned/driven Ford, Nissan, and Honda trucks, which in my opinion were not as fast, did not handle as well, and were not as fun to drive. For me its the experience and Tacoma has it. Ultimately it is your decision, but frankly some of the comments are real nit picky. You either like it or you don't.

Love my Taco
Had this truck for 2 months and I am in love with it. The ga she mileage is mediocre averaging about 17.5 in town and 22 on the highway but it's a truck. Nobody buys a truck for it's excellent gas mileage. I've been off roading once and the 4WD system in 4LO got me through the local trail just fine but I did use the crawl control feature just to say I tried it even though it's not necessary. The crawl control and Multi terrain select features are great toys to have for off roading which is one of the reasons I went for the off road over the sport model. Some have been complaining about the transmission shifting gears to often and I did experience it early on but now that my truck has 3k miles on it the transmission is more in sync. Once the truck breaks in its far more responsive. I'm 6'1 and I fit just fine in my taco and my family members fit all fine in the backseat. I love my 2017 taco and I will drive her to the wheels fall off and don't care to own any other pickup truck on the market.

Just sold it thank God
We had a 2017 Off Road 4x4 we luckily just sold it. Boy did I want to like it but no way. The transmission on this truck is the worst- see all other reviews. Just got a letter from Toyota that the frames on these may rust out & need to be replaced... uh didn’t Toyota already have this problem several years ago & now it’s happening again?!? Yes mine was already showing rust. The drivers seat sits so far down it makes one feel like a midget. Not to mention the truck’s payload is squat (check it on the truck before you buy it!!) couldn’t even put a small topper on it without maxing it out. And good luck towing anything with the crappy transmission. Worst of all is the Boise dealership- any complaints & you’ll be met with that it is normal, nothing is wrong. That was the reply for everything even when I complained about the rust - then 3 months later I got the letter from Toyota about it. The lame Boise dealership will also totally lowball you if you try to sell it back to them. Was able to sell it for over $5000 more than their offer. Used to own a 1987 Toyota truck & would pay anything to get another truck like that. These Tacoma’s are way overpriced pieces of ****.

4XFUN
Very comfortable ride and quiet. Large screen for the navigation and audio. Beautiful metallic blue color and black wheel trim. AC doesn't get as cold as my other vehicles. Sound system is weak in quality and sound volume. My other vehicles have better speaker quality and volume can be made louder than the Tacoma. Since it is my newest vehicle I would expect higher standards. Door molding on driver side needed to be replaced and took over three weeks at the Toyota dealer in Escondido. Not impressed with durability of parts at such an early date. Recently replaced the OEM tires, much better ride.

POOR CHOICE ON SELECTING A VEHICLE, FOOL ME ONCE..
This truck has no power and can't seem to find the correct gear. It bogs down so much that I use the manual select lever to change gears. It's been to the dealer twice who tells me that this is "normal" operation. The electronic control module went bad at 200 miles. The drivers seat is uncomfortable and hard to get in and out of. The 4 wheel drive doesn't work correctly but no need to have it checked at the dealer as I'm sure it's "normal". The 3.5 engine is a POS, they should have stuck with the 4.0, much better engine. I want to test drive the next vehicle I get for at least a weekend, not just a trip around the block. The problem is there are no such thing as a mechanic anymore. You have part changers at the dealership who only know what the computer tells them and can't diagnose a real problem. Glad I leased this pile so I can give it back in 36 months.

TOP NOTCH TOYOTA
Great truck. Truck replaced a 2003 Tacoma. Totally different truck from that one; different in a good way. Very comfortable ride, tows better, more power and better fuel economy. More creature comforts. Even though I miss the old one I am totally happy with the new one. Plan on keeping it for years.

Tacoma TRD Sport
I bought this Blazing Blue Pearl Tacoma used. It was 3 years old and had 15.300 miles and just came off lease. The vehicle was immaculate and came with the Toyota Certified Used Vehicle warranty. The vehicle has performed flawlessly. I have changed the oil once, replaced the wiper inserts and had the tires rotated and balanced. The mechanic at the store that rotated the tires asked me why I had brought the truck in, I told him because Toyota said so (recommended service interval). He said the wheels were carrying the original weights and didn't need balancing after the rotation. I've owned the vehicle 10 months and have no reason to take it to Toyota and have a repair done under the free bumper-to-bumper warranty. This is a fun to drive head-turner that is inexpensive to operate and worry free. Extremely happy.

Tacoma Exceeded Expectations
This was my first ever truck purchase as I have owned over 15 different vehicles in my life, but never a truck. It’s a comfortable ride, perfect amount of technology and accessories and looks great. From the Entune radio system to the overall interior design I am truly satisfied. I put my Tacoma to use the first week, picking up a refrigerator, making trips to the Salvation Army, to recycle cans and to the local landfill and it was perfect for the job. The tie downs it came with made the jobs even easier. I do recommend a bed extender on the short bed as you will use it more often then you think, I could have used it already. Overall great purchase and worth your money no matter what trim you go with.

howling and whining noise on rear differential
i have this problem since the first few months of ownership and to fight it out since it was only like 22000 miles on it and finally they were able to duplicate at 44000 which is out of warranty but after months of complain they finally fix the problem for free without records/paperworks but still after a few thousand miles still whining noise still there, i dont know whats going on with toyota? this is not a chevy differential in whining sound is normal for them.

My 4rth Tacoma.......Nothing holds its valuse mor
Love my Tacomas...they just do it all. And are comfy, quiet and have plenty of power even when towing. I am on my 4rth Tacoma now, and they get better every time. I am waiting for the 2018 with the extra safety features like auto braking, cruise control self adjusting, etc. The TSS system will make me feel much safer. The combined mileage is pretty good and I actually am averaging about 22mpg, and I do a lot of around town driving.
Love my Tacoma
Vehicle has a fair ride, gas mileage okay for a midsize pickup, electronics okay, logic behind locking the vehicle if you open with key fob but don’t put key in the ignition it then locks you out?

Best In Class...Except...
This really is a best in class vehicle. Ride, handling, comfort, well thought out in all respects except one. Why Toyota cant get this right is a mystery to most...still underpowered but now we have a transmission that cannot hold a constant speed going up a hill. Even the slightest incline causes the transmission to downshift, upshift, downshift, upshift and so on. Only way to avoid the constant shifting is to manually downshift and keep the lower gear manually used and not depend on the automatic transmission. Unfortunate as this vehicle is outstanding in almost every other aspect of a light truck ride. Wishing and hoping Toyota someday brings the Helix (diesel) platform to the USA. Overall happy but when going uphill the transmission is really annoying.

Love my Tacoma
This is a truck; the off road model rides a bit stiffer than a GMC or Chevy or even an SR5. but it really shines when you get off road, and the toyota crawl function is absolutely fantastic in sand and dirt. And the resell I got on the Tacoma I traded in was fantastic! In the beginning the 8-speed transmission seemed to shift a lot. But I dont notice that anymore. Once it was broken in I have really loved it.

New Ride
I bought a new TRD Sport 6 cylinder 4X2. It's perfect for where I live. Houston has cracked up roads and potholes everywhere. Since getting this model I have been spending less on gas than my Honda Accord four banger that was a 2012 model. If you drive without getting down and punching it the gas mileage is great. In Houston you drive light to light or sit on the freeway. It's nice to have the power though when there is a slow poke to get around or someone being an ass. I'm like the truck very much!

A catchy mid-size ride
I really love the truck. This is my 3rd truck. The other 2 had a 6 & 8 cylinders. This handles well on ice, snow and it's just rear wheel drive. I'm mid sized so the interior fits me. I have a lot of hills around me and it does feel fine. You do have to get a feel for the accelerator. Just stomping on the gas at the bottom of the hill will drop you down the gears and cause excessive shifting of the transmission. It is a 4cyl, so it's not going to throw you back into the seat. But it accelerates fine on a grade. The braking is a little underwhelming. What I like the most is the value. Stepping up to a 6cyl can set you back 2500-3200 bills. It has really good ground clearance and gets decent MPG. If your going to haul a lot of heavy-loads at speed, get a bigger engine like an 8cyl. But if your hauling stuff like firewood, refrigerator, etc, this truck will do. The biggest selling points on the truck are comfort, looks, handling, reliability and price point. And lastly the dealership was a thumbs up for me. This is my 2nd Toyota and have had nothing but good things to say about both. I did get the utility package.

Excellent
This is my 3rd Truck and boy does it drive much better then the 1970 Toyota truck or my 1983 Dodge Rampage. That saying a lot since the dodge rampage drove like a car with nice bucket seats. The truck takes a little getting used to but like any new vehicle it going to take time to adjust to different settings. I was thrilled because my insurance only went up 10 bucks from driving a 2006 Acura TSX and I was not paying all that much for great coverage under 400 every 6 months. The truck likes to conserve on gas yes but when you need power just push the pedal down firm and you got full on get up and go power. If your taller then 6 FT you may end up hitting your head on the ceiling. For the most part though the ride is smooth and compliant especially on freeway. If your looking to get some extra weight under the wheels definitely get the Tonneau cover. It helps with getting more grip on the tires and improves gas mileage. Also the engine is much more compliant between gear shifts or maybe the computer just learned to adjust to my drive style. Either way it should be a boon to you because you can now lock your bed and lock the tailgate. Which is one of my concerns since the tailgate is so easy to remove.

Well worth it
Looking for a reliable 4 cylinder truck? You can’t beat a Tacoma. Drives smoothly and don’t expect to much horse power. This is a truck that will save you $$ in the long term as long as you keep up with the basic maintenance. I have friends you have older models and they have 200+ miles.
Transmission doesn't want to go into high gear.
2017 Tacoma does not want to go into high gear on the hwy when doing 60 to 80 mph. I just took a 260 mile trip and 90 % of the time it ran at 3500 rpms and my hwy gas mileage was 15.2 mpg. I took it to the dealer before this trip. They hooked it up to the computer and took it for a short drive and it did not do it at that time so they did nothing. Now I have to waste more time to take it back and have them check it again. This time I have a video.
2003 tundra a good year
I wish this truck had power seats or that the steering wheel pulled out 2 or 3 inches more and that it had a better ride.

Great Truck
I have had my TRD off road 4x4 for 3 months now and it has been great so far after 4500 miles. The low end power could be better but once the engine gets to 3000-4000 RPM's this truck takes off. The power is there but the engine likes higher RPMs. I have no issues with the transmission when I push the ECT button even though fuel economy suffers. This new transmission is tuned for better fuel economy and that's why many are quite irritated with this transmission but the ECT fixes that. Overall I love this truck and I plan on driving it until the doors fall off.

LOVE w Blue Truck - 2017 TRD SPORT Tacoma
Traded in my 2011 Trd Sport Tacoma for one reason and one reason only the ride was rough I loved this truck. Then came the 3rd gen. Tacoma in 2016 saw it and heard about all the trans problems of 5th and 6th gear confused so I waited for this BLAZING BLUE 2017. Get looks from everyone and everyone comes up to me saying beutiful truck...which I think is absulotely true. Now the ride is like riding in a big F-150 or a Lexus it is so queit and comfortable. It get better: Averaging 24 mpg in the city. I drove it on a 33 mile freeway drive the other day with about 3 stop lights got 29 mpg... I am so so stoked. Open the door w/o pushing key button then push start the start button and your off to a smooth quiet comfortable ride luxury all the way. Is so so easy to start and go. Look forward to driving this luxury truck and easy to park. Can't wait for my next drive.....get one for yourself.

Drivers seat low for someone 5' 7" and not adjustable for height. Side mirrors obstruct my view as they are directly in my line of sight. At some time in the near future I will raise the seat. That's it for complaints. I love this truck. The seat is very comfortable and I would not hesitate to take it on a long trip.

Very Happy!
I have owned my 2017 TRD Sport 4x4 for 6 months. Have 15,000 miles on it. Mostly highway. I have been very pleased with almost every facet of the truck. The gas mileage is a little lower than advertised, but not too much. It is a fun truck to drive. Very comfortable, although I could see where taller people may not be as comfortable. Have not noticed the shifting issues that some reviews have. I am anxious to see how it gets around during winter weather. I really have no complaints. For the price, it is not exactly a steal, but I would definitely buy the same truck again.

Consumer Reports is all wrong!!!!
Don't believe the reviews that say that this truck is uncomfortable and driver's seat is not comfortable. Admittedly the back seat would not be too good for a long trip. The ride height is wonderful and the view of the road is great. Rides like most cars except, that it feels much more solid than anything but an expensive luxury car. The overall quality of the Tacoma is head and shoulders above any other truck in it's class. Why the Ridgeline from Honda is rated so high ,I'll never understand. I recommend the Tacoma to anyone who asks. Far superior to the competition!

A real truck
I've only put 1,000 miles on this truck, but so far its been great. You may get a more comfortable car like ride with a Canyon or Colorado but these two trucks lack the truck feel that I wanted. The TRD Off-road is awesome looking and is a real head turner. We took my wife's Mazda in for service and the whole service department was staring out the window at it in awe. I feel like I can tackle any terrain in this truck and the double cab with a 6 foot bed it actually looks like a practical balanced vehicle compared to the 5 ft bed. The only read complaint I have is the transmission. It does seem to lean towards low rpm which can make it feel sluggish at times but the manual mode and the ECT power button overcome this issue.

Too much money
Getting a Ford rapture or Chevy 2500, Tacoma has only 3.5 v6 no power at all truck is too heavy for engine size radio is poor mileage is poor not a good drive train at all, at 7000 miles had 3 suspension repairs, engine light on, two windows failed to roll up, cheap tires that come with it also, glad I went lemon law and got my settlement, never buy Toyota buyer beware...after 7156 miles settlement done, some Toyota reliability don't buy a Tacoma had mine from April 2017 new till February 2018. 2017 Tacoma failed my opinion on them, buy american.

BEAUTIFUL, DURABLE, AIR-ASSIST MANNY 4x4=PURE JOY
Toyota created my dream truck and I was fortunate enough to actually get it! The dealer where I purchased it, TOYOTA WEST, COLUMBUS OHIO provided superb sales people (Chad and Michael) to help me work out the details. It is a color called Quicksand and to this day people stop me to compliment me on my truck's beauty. But its features are superb: it is both rugged and technologically brilliant. The engine purrs. The driving experience is glorious; you can really feel the power in a manual. The style was created by some artists: just gorgeous. Here, 3 years out, my truck has proven to be my consummate driving experience. I am an elder: it will likely be my last vehicle for I do not plan to ever trade it in. UPDATE; This is the loveliest and most responsive, durable and phenomenally well-appointed vehicle on the planet, in my opinion. Everything which i wrote two years ago holds true today, entering my fifth year as owner. I get between 22- 25 miles per gallon still, with 4 -wheel drive. I absolutely love my Tacoma. TY TOYOTA!!! and by the way, ADVANCE TOYOTA IN HUNTINGTON WV IS AN AWESOME LOCAL DEALERSHIP that Cares for my truck as it deserves, and provides impeccable service.UPDATE : MARCH, 2024 BEST TRUCK IN CREATION and STILL RUNS LIKE A TOP; AMAZING OFF ROAD PERFORMANCE AS WELL AS i STILL GET 23-26 MPG on AVERAGE ! BRILLAINT BEAUTIFUL FABULOUS ACCOUTREMENTS ! TY FOR MAKING A MANUAL TRANSMISSION AND ENGINE THAT IS PURE JOY TO DRIVE: RESPONSIVE, USER-FRIENDLY, GREAT ON GAS, AND POWERFUL. IT has also held up well to my big dogs sharing it with me! NOTE: 2/2025 This is all still true except we have a brand new dealer time will tell how that goes.I LOVE MY TRUCK AND IT IS HOLDING UP BRILLIANTLY

Get a Manual Like a Real Driver
This is a truck. Moreover, mine has 4WD. Anyone who buys a 4WD offroad vehicle with an automatic transmission is .. How to put this? Not very smart. Not a serious driver. Not really interested in being in control of their vehicle. Automatic transmissions have one valid use: commuting frequently in traffic. If you are doing that, you shouldn't be driving a truck to do it. If you drive in water, mud or snow; if you drive uneven rough surfaces - like you will in a truck - you need control of your transmission. If you want to control your engine torque for any of a dozen other excellent reasons, you need a manual transmission. The fact that the only new manual transmission 4WD trucks availble today in this stupid f'd up country are the Tacoma, a Nissan and a Ram Cummings Desiel is clear evidence of our vapidity, venality and utter decadence. Americans are a lazy stupid people willing to cede autonomy and control over the most important things to morons and computers simply for the sake of flaccid bland ease and convenience. We want everything unchallanging and easy, even when it means losing efficacy and potency. So: All you knuckleheads who bought an automatic and have discovered the stupid computer doesn't know how to drive (hah! what a bloody surprise..) - well, you have absolutely zero sympathy from me. I bought this truck because it is a manual 4WD with 6400 lbs towing capacity. It does what it is supposed to do, it is adaquate to its task. I just towed a 5000 lbs rv travel trailer across country with it, and it took other vehicles on the right going up into the Rockies with relative ease, even with that weight in tow. The only drawbacks to it are mediocre fuel economy and awkward access (I'm 6'2" and I have to duck to get in). I would prefer to drive a larger truck, but the Cummings Deisel is overkill for my needs, and I will not ever drive an automatic. No computer is going to decide what gear I need to be in when it really matters, when things are on the line. All you chumps who let a computer drive your truck (your TRUCK!) are simply pathetic. You are wrecking this country. Please stop before you've let them lobtomize you, implant you with a chip and enslave you to Hive Mind.. Because I bet that's what you all are gonna do next, where this is all headed..

Great truck in need of transmission reprogramming
I've been looking for a midsize truck. I was originally set on the GMC Canyon but after seeing all the safety recalls and consumer complaints I decided to pass. I ended buying the 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off road 4x4 double cab short bed, automatic, towing package and JBL premium tech package. My biggest complaint was the shifting problem with the transmission. After having the 2016 TSB for the issue applied (and transmission fluid filled to the correct level) at the dealer the issue is now resolved. I couldn't be happier with the truck but miss the HP and torque of my old 2004 GMC HD2500 with the 6 liter V8 (but not the gas mileage or rough ride when not towing). I do some offroading, and minimal towing (3000 lbs or less) with two kids and this was a great downsize from the "big" truck. Not to mention Tacoma reliability and resell value.

2017 Tacoma limited
Don't recommend. Had to sell it and take a loss. I didn't like the Atkinson cycled engine at all also the transmission had a very harsh shifting and the rear axle slammed when shifting. New technology to save gas that made it worse ever.toyota said it's normal but it's not at all. Also they don't hold the value since Toyota co.holds that in their hands by giving best offers to buy new Tacoma and too many are available. I don't recommend. END...

Great truck
I have liked almost every part of this truck! I have never owned a truck with greater off-road capability and reliability!! There have been a few issues like any vehicle but mainly recalls like 3rd brake light leaking water and a fan but both have been fixed with ease at the dealer with no complaints or fights. One big issue was the rear leaf springs squeaking and Toyota saying there just that way and that’s a joke no other truck I have owned made that noise but it finally a wore it’s self in and no more squeaky leafs. Overall though I would not go for a different truck great reliability and it holds it’s value!
