Good mid size truck with too many flaws
I just got rid of my 2017 Toyota Tacoma TRD sport crew cab I owned it for nearly three and a half years I absolutely loved it in the beginning but hated it the last year-and-a-half. My main gripes with the vehicle is there's no low-end torque when you have to merge or step on the gas the adaptive learning transmission just bogs down and there's literally no power which is definitely a safety concern of mine because if you have to merge or go through an intersection that low end torque is virtually nonexistent. To mitigate this I have to put the truck in the first gear and step on the gas to get any kind of out of a hole punch. The dealer reflashed the transmission three times which didn't fix it. Toyota was focused more on MPGs than actual truck features and trucks need torque even mid-sized ones. The constant upshifting and downshifting going up hills was getting ridiculous the transmission is the biggest issue with this truck. If they just made it a regular 5-speed transmission to this engine it be a whole new ballgame. The other issue I had with this truck the paint is very thin and the interior plastic scratch very easy. For the pros to me it was comfortable I'm not a big guy I'm only 5 8 average build once you get up to speed it definitely has good passing ability and acceleration, it was comfortable to me it was great off-road I use mine for a lot of surf fishing never got stuck went through the snow with ease. It was very reliable put 57,000 miles on it with no mechanical issues or breakdowns. I did tow a Toyota Camry with a car dolly it did tow it very well but it was a straight stretch of road 400 miles but if there was Hills I would probably have a different opinion. It did many trips to Home Depot it hauled my fishing gear and I used it like a truck and it did not miss a Beat. Overall the truck is fantastic off road with mediocre on-road abilities due to transmission and gearing. For the price of the truck this is unacceptable. I'm glad that Tacoma does hold its value so I didn't lose anything on trading in the truck. Toyota is very reliable but I can tell you right now I would never own another one just do the transmission and gearing in this truck

BAHA Taco
Overall the newly designed Tacoma is nice truck. Luckily I have a three year lease on this truck. With 26 months into the lease and only 13K miles on the truck it is starting to bubble rust on the rocker sills where the weather seal attaches to the sill ... (very disappointing). The passenger side speaker in the dash near the A-pillar rattles annoyingly. I had a water stream running down the inside of the rear sliding window up in the corner on the drivers side while raining. There were two different times I climbed into the truck with a thick frost build up on the inside of the wind shield. (Yes it was near zero degrees outside but really??) Final note, looking forward to the end of my lease.

DECENT TRUCK, WISH IT HAD A MANUAL.
I think the thing about the Tacoma I like least is the seating and the ergonomics. I'm short, 5' 2", and the side mirror is right in my line of vision making driving rather a little dangerous. I traded a 4L V6 Nissan Frontier for the Tacoma and I sort of wish I hadn't. (I wanted a manual transmission but I didn't want the trim level and price at which the standard for the V6 is available and I think the 2.7 L Tacoma engine with the 5 speed manual is quite underpowered.) The power in the Tacoma is decent but the automatic transmission feels a little, I don't know, squishy somehow...not as crisp and clear as other automatics I've driven, if that makes any sense. And the downshifts into first are weird. Come to think of it, to upshifts into first are weird, too. like the clutch slips or drags or something. (I don't know enough about automatics to know what it is.) The steering wheel position and distance are not optimal for me and not comfortable. MPG is kind of dismal but it's really about what you should expect from a V6/4WD and at least the tank is fairly capacious. I like the ability to manually shift (even though there's no clutch) and I like the automatic gear selection gait. The tailgait lowering damping in very nice but it's heavy to close and there's no help for that. I like the 4WD when the winter roads get snotty and in general the truck handles okay. I had an '02 Mazda B Series that had terrible corrosion problems so I had the Tacoma undercoated with some dealer-applied gunk but the jury is still out on the value of having done that since I have only 8K miles on the OD. I like the body styling, a vest improvement over the early 2000s which looked like warthogs on wheels. I think the dash climate control knobs themselves are a bit unclear and the blower is a bit weak. The power steering is great, very light. Overall, I like my Tacoma well enough but I'm not super impressed with any one aspect.

Poor shifting
2017 Truck is always searching for what gear to shift into between 45 and 52 mph. I have been to the dealership three times with no resolution.still kit resolved.purchased the Tacoma 12/17 and traded it in 10/18 due to the dealer not fixing the transmission problem

Oh what a feeling...Toyota
I waited to make this review after 1 year of driving. I love the high stance and ground clearance that have always made Tacoma’s stand apart. So far I love driving it. I am happy with the power and the peace of mind knowing it will last me many years of trouble free driving. After all, it’s the same engine found in Lexus, Sienna, Highlander and Camry. I agree the transmission likes to shift to the next gear quickly but I am getting decent mileage. Averaging 21-22mpg on regular fuel. If I get tired of the early shifting, I can press the ECT button and I’ve got plenty of power to keep or pass fellow motorists with ease. I can tell the interior material will last. The cloth seats and interior plastic feel very durable. I personally love the seating position. Toyota could put a little more features in the vehicle but the lack of cutting edge features is what helps keep Toyota reliable. Love the power sliding rear window. I get plenty of compliments. Update At 30k miles I have had a great experience. Still drives like new. So far I’ve had to replace the rear brake light due to a leak and battery died right at 2 year mark. Other than that truck has been very reliable.

Great value and a really solid vehicle
I didn't have much money and I didn't want to get a loan, so I got the 4 cylinder. Luckily I got a standard because you have to wind it out to keep it going sometimes. Very comfortable and a good drive. Strangely there is no intermittent setting on the windshield wipers. Otherwise I am a happy camper! Update 11-23-2020: I read through other reviews and it certainly sounds like there's an issue with automatic transmissions. Therefore, get the manual! I haven't experienced any of the problems mentioned. In fact (knock on wood) I'm nearly to 50K miles and the only issue was a recall for the fan in the heater/AC. I'm still really happy with this vehicle. Update 5-23-2023: Still good. Getting oil changes only every 10,000 miles now with high mileage oil. Passing can be a little tense with the four-cylinder, so I don't tend to pass as much as I would otherwise. Good mileage though. Update 11-23-23: 75,000 miles now and time for a comprehensive servicing. Gone through 2 sets of tires including the factory tires. Great truck and really good in snow. Update 11-27-2024: Got some body work done (misc dents, etc.) and some after-market wheels, so the truck looks really good again -- like new! Those factory wheels got a lot of rust spots and looked like crap. Apparently the new Tacomas are all 4 cylinders now, but I'm sure they did something to get more power than what I get from my 4 cylinder. But it gets great gas mileage. Happy camper still.

Toyota Tacoma TRD Off Road Access Cab
I have 25,000 miles on this vehicle ranging from off road, around town and highway driving including trips through the mountains. This truck is very comfortable for long trips. It’s easy to steer and park! The utility of it is great! I use everything on it. The 6 foot bed is useful to haul everything that I have put in it. It’s lower height makes lifting things in and out of the bed a breeze. It’s narrower than a standard half ton truck so it’s easy to get down narrow dirt roads without scratching up your truck. It’s built tough to last! Go buy one now!

So sad but leaving you Toyota!
we got a recall from toyota 4 years ago --there was rusting in the frame of the tacoma trucks. Took it in and the dealer said "No rust, but we will put undercoating on the vehicle" Fast forward. took our truck to our local mechanic--lo and behold--a rusted frame!! Seriously folks? So Toyota decided to put a bandaid on a hemorage and now we have a truck with less than 100k miles and a rusted frame--Dealer tells us "Toyota problem" Corporate says " how many ways can we say we are sorry but it will be about 10 grand to fix it" Well Toyota I have owned a Camry, Tacoma truck and two Prius--You used to stand behind your product--not any more--dependability is gone--so my next vehicle will not be a Toyota--One more lost customer!
Disappointed
Recently traded in my 2015 Tundra for a 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road. Paid almost exactly for the Tacoma what I paid for the Tundra two years ago (approx $37,500). I have driven Tundras since 2008 and loved them but I thought downsizing would be good since I rarely used the Tundra's full size capability and only averaged 15 MPG for mostly highway driving. So the Tacoma looks good and has a smaller engine, so I guessed better mileage and ease of parking at Wal-Mart. I have driven it about 800 miles so these are my first impressions. Driver seat is VERY uncomfortable for me and I can't adjust it to fit me properly. I am 5' 10" and 200 lbs. THERE IS NO POWER DRIVER SEAT. My wife's Honda CRV has a power memory seat for gosh sakes!!. C"mon Toyaota. Wake up to who is buying this vehicle. Printed pattern on the seats looks like a design from the 1980's. The engine is my other complaint. Again, I am used to the big V-8 Tundra, but the Tacoma just feels under powered. When you push down on the gas pedal it seems like it has to downshift to go faster, or entering the highway seems to tax it's capabilities. Mileage so far is about 18MPG while I expected at least 20. The electronics and navigation are easy to use. If you want one, take it on a much longer test drive than I did. I regret my decision to buy this vehicle. Next time I would look at the Colorado, and I hate any GM product and have told my wife to shoot me if I ever even considered a GM product. Please Toyota, help save my life and upgrade the Tacoma! ⁸ UPDATE: After driving the Tacoma for 9 months, I traded it in on a new Tundra and my life was back to normal.

Get a V6 period & watch for hidden costs
UPDATE 9-1-18- Truck still getting 16MPG avg. Paint job holds up to nothing- through to metal all over. Speedometer & Tachometer went bad immediately- had replaced under warranty. Truck stills drives sluggish & rough even when accelerating from stop. Local dealership- Mike Erdman Toyota- has been no help. Cannot advise to buy this truck. From before: I learned a lot. Toyota doesn't tell you a lot- and neither will the dealerships. Here's what I bought & why I am unsatisfied. We bought a 2.7 liter Access cab SR w cruise control for a power wash/window wash company/occasional personal use. We tow a 1500 lbs trailer that can be up to 3000 with full water tanks (will rarely do this- but that is the scope). The PW trailer is a great designed small trailer. The 2.7 liter 4 cyl is rated for 3500 lbs max towing, we "should be" good. The 4cyl is very sluggish even without trailer. Put on trailer & you're getting 10MPG & you can barely safely get up to 70mph. Put it on cruise control- in Florida on the hwy & your tach will be stuck at 3k RPM & you can literally watch your gas gauge drop. Also- TOYOTA does NOT provide a hitch for 4cyl. If your truck isn't a V6, you'll need aftermarket. Dealership will charge more. It is super easy to self-install, but our dealership charged for Toyota tow hitch & gave us aftermarket. Told us afterwards there is not aftermarket OEM Toyota hitch. Also- the Tacoma branded rubber mats are for 4 door trucks- they literally don't fit access cabs. There are NO mats included with the truck. Dealers charge for them- $299 for cloth mats! You can get amazing Husky mats for $180 front & back. Here's another thing- the 2016/17 Tacoma bodies have more weight to them making the V6 get the same gas mileage as the 4cyl. Tow something and now the V6 gets better gas mileage. I don't know why they even offer the 4cyl any more. There is NO advantage to the 4cyl. We have yet to get over 20 mpg without towing on a mix of Highway & city- mostly hwy & cruise control around 60-70MPH. Honestly, the 4 cyl driving feels clunky, sluggish & outdated. Get the V6- you will have more power & actually get better gas mileage overall- especially if you are going to tow ANYTHING. It actually feels similar to the acceleration on my 1982 Mercedes turbo diesel, not good.

So much for the vaulted Toyota reliability
Reading other reviews and it appears that the sluggish acceleration, constant gear hunting and rear end noise that I have are symptomatic for this vehicle. I've had the truck back at the dealership 4 times already for a reflash of the transmission firmware and the noisy rear end. The transmission still hunts all over the place when I'm on the highway and the rear end is still very noisy. I haven't experienced the leaking that others have complained about yet but I suspect it won't be long before I do. My brother bought a Colorado shortly after I bought this truck and after driving his I wish I had as well. I'd like to dump this truck now but I know I'll take a bath as I already have close to 10K miles on it. This is my second bad experience with a Toyota product and it will be my last.

Nice truck trans/motor combo is garbage
interior is nice and the truck design is sharp but the transmission is junk. It constantly shifts and it learns the way you drive which is a terrible option for a truck. The truck will cruise at 1000rpm which is way to low for that 3.5l. Not enough torque to pull that off. I like everything else but the driving experience is so bad i am forced to trade it in. Don't want to but i have never been more frustrated in a truck just driving down the street.

Good vehicle loce toyota But!!!!!!
So i have had many 2wd and 4wd and this truck is amazing ! But , the fuel efficiency is off, the trans is too slugish , but the overall feel and ride is perfect !! Its an amazing truck but let's face it ! Prices keep going up like an iPhone! Perfect phone at times , but because of the name, they think value shlould increase!! I think what toyota has done is good somewhat , but no different than the ipone ! If u going to charge 35+ for a truck, i best see leather, and it loaded! Lets face it , most of us are not rich, we dont care for our lives to be payments and banks! If u sell a product make it worth the damn cash!!product price is way to high! Toyota builds its prices off the name! Yes quality can be good depending on what u get but its name isnt everything!! I dont care to pay $40,000 out the Door the rest pf my life for a sr5 4×4 double cab.. i like this truck but u and GMC and all else are [non-permissible content removed]! Pay has not imcreased , but cost of all else is rising! I may be able to pay, but dont care to be strapped for this amount when my 98 chevy s10 can do most of! Great build , but pricing is horrible! Get off the high horse toyota!!!

Great truck, poor gas mileage
This is my first truck, after owning bars and small SUV. I have a model with manual transmission. I'm getting only 18 mpg on the highway. I expected a little bit better. I bought good stuffed tires and took the truck on snowed in mountain passes. In 4wd it holds the road like a champ. I have a full confidence in it. In 2wd it gets some fishtailing that is immediately corrected by traction control (I didn't have any weight in the bed). Breaking is great. I could feel ABS activating only once, when doing aggressive breaking from 60 mph on sheer ice. It partially may be thanks to good winter tires. Low beam headlights are good, high beam--best I've seen. Build quality seems to be OK. I found cross-threaded bolt holding belly pan. I have yet to address it with the dealer. I think materials used on dashboard could be better. My wife has 2010 Subaru Impreza and it feels much more refined, although cost just over 1/2 of a price for Tacoma. Telescopic steering wheel is a joke. I can't lift it high enough to comfortably get out of truck. It traps my right thigh between the wheel and the seat. The truck is also missing driver's side handle to assist in getting in and out of the cab (I'm fairly fit in late thirties). The biggest gripe I have is the fact that heated seats come only as part of $2000 package. I don't need parking sensors or moonroof, heated seats are nice to have in cold climate. All in all, I'm happy with the truck.

A very untrustworthy company
The trouble with being a small town part of Toyota ownership, As of today in 2023 Toyota has yet to try to improve or recall. So sad, Have not seen or heard of any improvements in Toyota quality, customer care or corporate concern, Toyota sells expensive lawn ornaments, and laugh at your misery, Worst experience of my life, don’t trust toyota motor Corp, corporate or any dealer, their complet lack of care for human life is appalling, this truck bucks, jerks and intermittently locks up the rear differential with a bang that stops or slides the rear sideways. Informed the dealer top mech that ford has the same 6 speed trans and downshifts to low at any speed, maybe that would help their diagnosis? Ha Ha, they did not even care, After 6 morning months of the truck sitting in my driveway or at the dealer waiting for s factory rep to drive, his only words were operational as expected???? I had to eat 14,000 dollars to move into a 4 Runner which I sold because of electrical issues, smoke from under dash, dealer said no problems??? Wait for the fire to start then call? I really didn’t want, or lose more because it was a (Used Truck). Alaska has no dealer support and corporate are hiding behind the brand. This truck is going to injure people and then maybe toyota will fess up. I am having a few issues with the 4 Runner but have to drive to Seattle to get warranty work??? Not happy . I have been a mechanic for 37 years and would not drive this unsafe truck. I’m currently in a 99 Durango that runs, drives perfect and has 98,000 miles on it. It is far safer and way more reliable than a new Toyota and has the same warranty [None], buy something else

Exactly what I wanted
2.5 years later update: Excellent vehicle still. I'll be keeping this one for sure. I just traded up my 2011 Tacoma 4cyl, 5 spd manual, 4x4 to a 2017 TRD Sport 4x4. This truck is great so far. I'm currently getting over 21mpg in the city. The engine and trans are set for economy, not power, unless you use the ECT power button. I haven't experienced any issues with my Tacoma as I've read about here. This is our 6th Toyota (my third Toyota truck). I have never had any reliability issues with any of the Toyotas I've owned. I had my first Toyota truck (1982 SR5 4x4 pickup) for over 13 years before I sold it. I expect to get at least 10 years out of this newer one. Update: 8/2022. Truck is very reliable and comfortable. Currently averaging 17-120 mpg depending on conditions (I did go up one tire size which had an affect on the mileage). Still very happy with this truck.

Traded 2008 Taco for new 2016 TRD Off Rd
After 5 years driving this 2016 bought new after trading in a 2008 Taco SR 5 and getting 85% of original price I am still enjoying. I have had battery issues and Toyota replaced 1st one after only 6 months use. 2nd one has been dead after truck sat for over 7 days. After 36 month service they suggested it was my driving habits or not driving enough causing battery issue. So, now I put on trickle charge if not driving often. Just had 60 month service and said battery good. Don't like transmission searching gears or heighth of driver side handle with window controls that my knee hits on. But, still enjoy driving it and has great aggressive appearance.

2017 double cab TRD sport
Review of 2017 double cab TRD sport. Great looking truck, alot of compliments. Interior materials very good and lots of interior storage. Truck vibrates at all speeds. You can feel in thru the floor, pedals and steering wheel. Hands will go numb after 20 min on the highway. A lot of similar feedback thruout the internet. Dealer tried to fix once, but more or less gave up. Toyota opened a case, had many discussions, their final ruling was "the truck falls within specs". So, specs let my hands go numb after 20 minutes. No help at all from Toyota and the Dealer. This is my 4th Toyota truck and my last Toyota product. I now have a truck with 5000 miles I cannot drive. After a lot of discussion and traded it in for a Chevy Colorado. I have had the Colorado for 6 months now, great truck, 100% better than the Tacoma. Smooth ride, fantastic ride. I will never own another Toyota.........I have had my Colorado for a year. 100% better than the Toyota, I will never own another Toyota when there is much better out there.

The real deal
The newer engine shifts more frequently. For a small truck it does get good mileage. Have not seen less than 18 on average with a heavy foot. Great ride. Snow and traction is fantastic. This is my never to get stuck truck. I went with this truck because of a locking rear. This really helps in the snow and crawl control is amazing. But everything works so well that i probably will never get to use it. Now what they don't tell you directly. Locking rear is for top speed 5mph. No Power seat. But once it is adjusted you tend not to move it. The reason i went with this truck is it has the highest resale value of any vehicle. I am tired of buying top of the line truck and 75,000 miles later it has no value. Not true for toyota. I also looked at the overall fitment and construction both inside and underneath and nothing comes close to attention to detail. It just looks and fells more well thought out.

JUNK - Worst Vehicle I Have Ever Bought
JUNK: I just bought a brand new Toyota Tacoma from a dealership, here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. It is a 2017 Tacoma - Limited.... I have never DESPISED a vehicle so much in my life and totally wish I could take the damn thing back. A. GAS MILEAGE - gets 13-14 MPG, doesnt matter if you take the interstate or backroads. The thing is a gas hog and JEEPS and other full-sized trucks get better MPG. Absolute total JUNK B. The so-called new Electric Transmission B.S. - Absolute JUNK - it shifts weird, it is slow (okay I guess, if you are an old man or old woman that loves to cruse at about 30 mph. HORRIBLE - and I absolutely despise it. C. Software onboard - absolutely TERRIBLE. THe GPS lags, it is NOT user friendly and they don't use Android or Apple iOS friendly software so, you have to get used to their CRAPPY TOYOTA SOFTWARE. Bloat/Junkware is what it is. D. Drive - the Drive - Feels like a LINCOLN or a Cadillac. Might be okay if again: you are an 80 year old man or woman that loves the feel of a slow, squooshy cadillac that feels top heavy and bouncy. Absolutely a TERRIBLE drive and feel to it. E. Handling - The steering wheel feels like that of a big TRACTOR. Reminds me of when I was back on the farm, in IOWA... Loose steering, you can't take your eyes of the road for a split second or you are swearving into the other lane or onto a curb... F. Oh, and only one door handle unlocks the truck... Keyless entry will only unlock the POS if you are on the drivers' side... and there is NO KEYLESS Start... It is a Limited, with no extra features, but sold as if it is Fully Loaded... Totally not - it's over priced JUNK... MY VOTE FOR THE WORST VEHICLE: the Toyota Tacoma... I hate this darn truck more than any vehicle I have ever driven in all 36 years of my life... JUNK!

the new taco rocks
just traded my 2013 taco limited for a 2017 model. i hated to see the old one go but the more i drive the new one the more i am knocked out by it's performance and features. everything i didn't like about the 2013 model seems to to have been addressed by toyota in the past four years. as i understand from my salesman, toyota brought in lexus engineers and they made improvements in noise control, quietness, and the ride - and it works. if you have ever fantasized about lexus making a pickup, this is it.

Bed Cover
The trifold bed cover that comes with the truck, even if you do not want the $650 add on, is not worth the money. It Is advertized as water resistant, however I find it is resistant to nothing. It simply leaks. Also, I don't understand for the top dollar you pay why the seats are manual adjust.

TRD Really stands for turd.
I bought this thing for a contract of almost 60k off the lot in Flagstaff AZ. Traveling on the I 40 between Flagstaff and Winslow (54miles) to my home the truck developed a slow leak in the tire. I suspected the leak from the dealer which they denied any responsibility. Super offroad tires couldn't make a 54 mile drive on the interstate. Second issue was the constant shifting of the transmission. The things couldn't hold the legal speed limit. Often it would jump from 6th to 3rd. Again Toyota dealer stated that's the way it goes. While at the dealership in thier care someone stole the tailgate and the 200 plus dollar spare tire I was forced to buy. Dealership told me to just drive it home and they would take care of the tailgate. I called Toyota before the loan was finalized and completed. I told them I wanted to just return the truck or agree to some kind of trade. They told me basically to eat a peach. I returned the truck regardless. It literally was that bad. I promptly went to my local Ford dealer. Explained everything in detail about what was happening. He explained that the Toyota was basically worthless to dealers because of thier reputation. I simply bought an f150. 2.7ecoboost. Over 60k miles on it without a single issue. Superior fuel mileage and performance. Larger cab. End of the day? I'm still fighting Toyota over this boondoggle. I'm still liable for 12k over this deal. Aaannnd my f 150 is an absolute dream truck. Be warned......

Best Truck on the Planet!
I'm still very excited to own this Truck. It is everything I expected and then some. There's nothing I have found bad to say. It's still doing well heading towards 60k miles and still doing everything I asked it too. Much more refined than the previous Tacoma I owned.

Rattle trap
This is my 4th and last Tacoma it has several interior rattles that make driving it (especially off road) very unpleasant. I took it in several times and the dealerships were not willing to try to find or fix any of the noises. I was able to fix just one of the rattles. Also all of the off road modes (traction & crawl control) only work in 4 low - not very helpful in the snow or on slick roads.
Good car but it's lacking a lot
It is a great car to have if you need to haul big, hopefully not to heavy, stuff around. To use as a daily driver it is pretty annoying due it's lack of power. The Engine/Transmision are slow, and feel like they lack a lot of power for a car that size. Nonetheless, it is a nice ride when on highway. Honestly, it is a good car but they could've added a bit more power and a bit more quality to the materials.

2017 Taco Limited 4x4
Pros - Nice ride, solid feel driving, steering, handling great, power is fine for V6 3.5 (had a Chevy V8 5.3 previously so no comparison there), interior finishes are nice, leather, controls etc. Cons- left knee hits door panel, radio with flat screen can be dangerous while driving (radio controls - driver must look away from the road to see it, mover higher and to driver), the front end has too much bounce/travel over bumps, has some minor engine or trani vibrations coming through the pedals and steering, 6 speed shifts more than i would prefer - I would still recommend it for a medium size 4x4 truck - well built. 4 of 5 Kevin M.

Waited all my life for a Tacoma
I have had my truck now for a year and a half. This review is for a 2017 Toyota Tacoma Limited SB with a folding bed cover and leather interior. I took a 2 week road trip last year and the truck is so comfortable and GPS was fantastic. My 92 year old aunt is able to get in and out of my truck with little assistance. The temperature control is very good. Great heater, great air conditioner. No mechanical issues. Backseat passengers report it's very roomy and comfortable. I'm super happy with my truck.

2017 Toyota Tacoma - Tranmission Problem
I am very disappointed in my 2017 Tacoma. Because I only drive manuals, I went with the Tacoma and ordered a TRD Sport PRO with a 6 speed manual. When going up a slight incline in first gear, the truck wants to drive in reverse. So, I have to avoid driving on a incline and make sure that I drive on a flat surface only. This is a problem because my drive way is on a slight incline. I have to drive in reverse to leave my own property. I have taken it to the dealership twice for this problem and they say that they can not find anything wrong with it. Since I do not have many miles on this truck, I will sale it because I am afraid to drive it. I wish there are more trucks that come with a manual.
New truck. Great so far.
I've owned this truck a little over a month. It is definitely a good representation of why the Toyota brand (especially pickups) have been so successful over they years. This is an excellent vehicle.

Great Truck for the Money
I love the beefy look of the new Tacoma SR. They have the style and size of the much more expensive TRD models. The 4 cylinder motor doesn't provide much power for acceleration, but I like the gas mileage. The road noise is much louder than I expected in a new car. The ride is very stiff, and again not as good as I expected. But for a few sacrifices, you get a great looking truck that is about $6,000 less than the TRD models.

2017 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road - Lease
The Mid-Size Truck Market is very interesting and great if you are interested in buying a new Vehicle, that is a little bit bigger than your Typical SUV, but can still handle the load and look aesthetically pleasing. I am a Civil Engineer and I travel to a lot of different Construction Sites. I used to own a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee (8 Cyl - 4WD), but it had A LOT of issues. The cost to repair its major flaws almost equated to the same amount I put down toward my lease for a new 2017 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road (Highest Premium Technology Package). To be honest the Toyota Tacoma never interested me because I wanted to stay with American Cars... After visiting the Philadelphia Car Show one weekend, I was looking forward to purchasing a GMC Canyon Denali or a Chevy Colorado. Though the Full Size Trucks looked great (Ford F-150, Ram Rebel, etc.) they were just a bit too large even for a person of my size (6'-2"/250lbs). However, after facing dealership issues trying find the GMC Canyon Denali, I decided to visit a well-reviewed Toyota Dealer to see the Toyota Tacoma, and my view point changed completely. The Tacoma Off-Road Package had (4) Doors, so I can still have my co-workers, family, and friends get into the vehicle. The Toyota Tacoma off-Road came with all the Technology Features (Navigation, Bluetooth, EnTune Radio, Wireless Charging Pad, Push-to-Start), Sun-Roof, and it also had Toyota's Safety features (Blind Spot mirrors, Rear-Collision Detect, Stop-Sensors, etc). In addition, compared to the other mid-size truck companies Toyota actually came with a lot of accessories that the others would force you to buy separately. Even with all the good new features there are some flaws, like the manual seat adjustments, weird placement of steering wheel, and sometimes sluggish acceleration. But even with that I still love this truck. I do a lot of volunteer work with my church, and I can haul equipment just fine, and the Short Box, which I preferred allows me to still park in Normal Parking Conditions. Plus the look of the Truck is 'Manly' and Aggressive so you get people to move out the way when you come donw the road, or turn heads when you drive by. Sometimes I feel like the best part of my day is when I wake up to drive and come home from work because the Truck is that enjoyable. If you previously owned poor vehicles of any kind you will greatly appreciate this one no matter what. In addition, I decided to lease my Tacoma because to own the car was a bit more expensive and if they upgrade the car in the future I can move on that vehicle instead. Toyota Tacoma supposedly has a good resale value because the Trucks are tough. I do not go Off-Roading, and I predominantly drive on the Highways of NJ. I usually like to cruise and enjoy my rides, so I do not keep up too well with my fellow fast pace drivers. But my MPG is 17cty, and 21.5hwy and when I get to the job site the conditions out there are far different than the normal road. But even then, rocks, curbs, or big logs cannot hinder this Truck from Moving. A Crawl Control Feature is included if you really like going Off-Road. Overall, If you are still judging between which mid-size truck to purchase I highly recommend you look at this Toyota Tacoma and take it for a Test-Drive. [Lease Info: $375/mth; 3yr – 12,000mi]

Not worth it
Worst driving vehicle i have ever owned. mpg never got even close to what they claim. best I averaged for the close to two years of ownership was 19 mpg several highway trips. Transmission and programming is irritating and not safe. the engine and transmission cannot figure out how to work together.

Great off road but cant hold 70+ on the freeway.
When I purchased this truck it was based on always wanting to drive a Tacoma. Historically I have driven full sized trucks. To be honest I feel like I’m driving an ATV. The truck is wonderful off road, but sometimes I feel like I’m going to get killed getting into traffic. Additionally, holding freeway speeds is an incessant downshift nightmare. The speed limit on the way to the mountains where I frequently travel is 80 mph. The Tacoma can’t handle it. I do not understand why Toyota can’t fix this. Not everyone lives off road. I think long term If I lived on a ranch or off the grid this truck would be ideal, but for the weekend warrior I would rather tow this truck to my off road location, like an ATV, than drive it there. Good little truck. Very reliable. Just wish it had a freeway mode. I purchased a 4 cyl. Turbo Wrangler Sahara for my daughter. In comparison to the Tacoma it has tons more torque, similar off-road, and better gas mileage. I’m not sure what Toyota is thinking

Honda Ridgeline Pricing and Value
NOVEMBER 7 2021 UPDATE ON HONDA RIDGELINE RTL-E versus TACOMA SR5: Honda has gone and priced the Ridgeline RTL-E with sky high prices vice the Tacoma SR5. The chip shortage has made prices even higher for all vehicles. The Ridgeline is more of an in-town vehicle and is popular with the older folk as it is easier to climb into due to its lower ground clearance. I went with the Tacoma and the gas mileage is around 15 to 18 in town and 20 to 23 on long highway trips. I have a friend with a new RTL-E and he is getting around 18 to 20 MPG around town and 25 to 26 on the highway. Both are great vehicles and the choice is up to you! May 2021: All you Honda Ridgeline prospective buyers take note. First, I am a Honda guy and believe they produce solid vehicles. I purchased a 2017 Ridgeline and was not impressed with the overall quality of the "truck". As far as value, my belief is the 2021 Tacoma gives you more truck for your buck. You need to compare the Ridgeline RTL to the Tacoma SR5 and determine what is the best value for you. Don't rely on Consumer Reports as they believe the Ridgeline can "drive on water" despite the shallow bed, the lower towing capacity and lower ground clearance. Compare the MSRP of both vehicles and what you get on the SR5 for your money. To date this year, Honda has sold around 13,000 Ridgeline's while Toyota has sold around 67,000 Tacomas (Source GoodCarBadCar.net). Clearly the Tacoma is the choice for drivers who want a truck that can do the job a truck is supposed to do. The SR5 comes with more standard equipment than the RTL. Judge for yourself depending on what you need a truck to do for you. If you just want to drive to Home Depot and bring home mulch, then buy a Ridgeline or a Pilot. If want to be able to go off road and need a tough truck that is durable and reliable, buy a Tacoma.

Ready to sell after 12,000 miles
Had two Tundras prior to this Tacoma, so I am used to power when I need it. The Tacoma does not have that. If you want a burst of power on the on-ramp or for passing, the engine has to down shift to find it. The is no power drivers seat at any trim level, so it is had to find a comfortable seating position when driving. I am currently looking for a new Tundra or Dodge Ram to replace this. Toyota engineers better get busy with some upgrades or be left behind by Chevy Colorado.

2017 Tacoma traded in for new 2019 Tundra Lmtd.
9-20 -20: Since my prior reviews, I continued to experience the constant transmission shifting on any incline which causes the RPM to jump, in my case from around 1800 to 3100 RPM, which is annoying. I have also discussed the problem with a number of other owners i'd see around in similar Tacomas, and also to service staff and to a person they had the same complaint/issue or customers w/the same complaint/issue, but like me all said the otherwise "liked" the Tacoma. I should say other than that I was also very pleased w/the 2017 overall. Anyway I have now traded the 2017 Tacoma with only 5434 miles on it and purchased a 2019 Tundra Crew Max Limited in October 2019.and while it is considerably larger and gets less MPG I so far love it and it got 4700 miles on it ! End of story/ PRIOR REVIEWS: I am a long time Tacoma/Toyota owner - traded a 2012 Tacoma Sport 4 liter for a 2017 Tacoma Off-road - the mismatch between the 3.5 liter Engine and the 6 Speed Transmission in the 2017 cause this vehicle to be continually downshift with the least bit of road incline - It is difficult to maintain a constant highway speed with any kind of minor incline. When I took it back to the dealer I was told there was a Tech Bulletin to "fix" the problem - after 6 hour "re calculating" adjustment to the computer was told mine already had the "fix" - nothing changed - When warranty is over w/b trading it in for something more acceptable. Also had to have the plastic front bumper insert replaced as it kept "popping out" ! Finally the ceiling knob controlling the extended tracking levels are NOT named so when U R turning the ceiling 4 wheel knob to change the traction from say low 4 wheel to say the climb traction level, U had better have the owners manual memorized as there R NO names or #, just an until dot to indicate what U R - this ended up NOT being a problem as I don't use it Reviews by Customers B4 purchase as tranny/engine this is apparently other folks' problem too as it was profusely commented on by buyers. starting in 2016. Currently the air circulating system in the cab has an annoying fan noise like the card pinned to a bicycle wheel. Haven't returned to have it checked. Believe it or not I am LIKING the vehicle better than when I first bought it, but at highway speeds the engine/tranny continual downshifting and engine revving (1800 RPM to 3100 RPM ) still is annoying. NOT MUCH HAS CHANGED THO I AM DRIVING IT MOSTLY IN AND AROUND THE CITY SO I AM "LIVING" W/THE TRANNY AND ENGINE THO I MET 2 WEEKS AGO WITH DEALER TO TRADE THIS VEHICLE FOR A 2019 TUNDRA BUT i PASSED ON A REALLY GOOD DEAL.....MONTHLY PAYMENT A LITTLE STEEP FOR NOW. -As I advised after my previous review I traded my Tacoma in because of my dislike of the engine transmission configuration esp after I talked w/about every newer Tacoma owner I would run into in parking lots and they ALL had the same downshifting high RPM complaint otherwise both they and I liked there truck !

Amazing Truck Right From The Start
Most Tacoma owners add aftermarket modifications to their trucks. I will be another as the options are endless and fun. However, without these modifications, this truck is a comfortable beast right off the lot. It has power, stamina, just enough clearance to get you through most obstacles, and great looks. I do wish however that Toyota would have given more luxurious options (for example: interior with brown leather seats and trim in more than just the Limited model). I am so far very happy with my new Taco and believe I will continue to be happy for many years with it. In the first 1000 miles of driving, I've already taken this truck through the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California twice with no complaints and I plan on many back road / off road adventures through the years.

Traded after 3 months POS
This Toyota IS TRASH. The engine is so sad and the transmission matches it. No power at all unless the engine is screaming. The seats are trash and hard to get out of. I have owned 2,3,4 gen and still have two 1991 models. The 4 cly in them pull better and get better mileage . Sad day when Toyota sells junk like this. I bought a Nissan

Horrible acceleration
My worst purchase in my life, much below my expectations . It requires very high RPM, sometimes it goes above 5. It often it in pain, labor pain without epidural . I bought 2015 Tacoma v4, weak, so I traded it on for v6, all wheel drive, limited. Not huge difference in performance from his brother v4. Will sell it

Taco # 4
After buying 4 new Taco's we know them pretty well. We had issues with the transmission on our 16' that have finally been resolved with an update to the computer. Now we love it. It tows an Edge Water 205CX powerboat really well. Its close to the limit of 6,800 lbs but really pulls strong. We use the ECT button and keep it out of 6th by using the manual option on the shifter. This one is the best yet. Our last being a 15' limited. Very quiet and smooth. We easily get 24 mpg with a fairly heavy foot on the hwy. Like many others we wish the seats were power and with more adjustments including the steering wheel. All in all it's another winner Taco. Update 5/29/17 Running great. Seats still need more adjustment. A bit short in length and too low. The steering wheel will not telescope enough for my long legs. The leather is a bit stiff but then I'm comparing it to a Beamer so its really not fair. The GPS is very user friendly. The JBL sound really rocks. Nothing else to report.

Very poor acceleration and shifting
2017 limited, V6 AWD, top the line. Very poor (slow and jerky) acceleration. You feel the engine working hard when RPM change from 2 to 3 to 4. Small slope requires high RPM. This is so different from my previous Lexus RX 330. The rear camera alarm stopped alarming within a month. Will sell it.

Under-powered & transmission in Tacoma Disappoints
Make sure you don't expect the mileage on the window sticker. I have purchased three other Toyotas, and one in 2016, they have always met the mileage ratings this one falls at least 20% below. Transmission is seems to shift all of the time, and unless I am going down hill seems to really suck the gas. The truck is clearly too heavy for the engine. I had a Dodge Ram with a 318 back in the 90's and this is better than that but this is disappointing. I added 200 lb fiberglass SnugTop cap and added two leafs under the rear springs because when on highway on corners the truck pulled hard on corners traveling on highway - the rear end suspension designed for Off Road, so says and mushy. The added 2 aftermarket rear spring leafs made all the difference for another $450. I blame engineers that probably didn't drive this after they worked up the specs. You should be able to make an off road that handles highway curves better. I wouldn't buy the Tundra because the gas mileage is even worse. In 1994 I had a 1989 Chevy Silverado pickup with long box not extended cap but was every bit as heavy as this truck actually heavier and would get avg 19.5 mpg, I get 17.3-17.5 avg on my Tacoma with Atkins cycle engine and thats with a lot of highway miles. I have the fabric seats which are tough but do not clean easily. Truck is solid, ride is good for 4-wheel. Found keeping Kevlar tires that were on vehicle pumped to 38-40 helps mileage vs 32-34 psi the dealer likes to inflate.

Fantastic vehicle but Gen 3 takes a few steps back
Pros: It's a Toyota truck. I fully expect it to run long after the body falls off. Utility & capability are both great, and it can go pretty much anywhere with 4x4 terrain modes and a locking diff. Though its got a long wheelbase meaning tight trails or steep drops will pose issues with turning radius and break over angles. Cons: Even though the engine has plenty of power it feels gutless. This is likely due to gearing choices and an overly aggressive shift pattern intended to improve gas mileage but it can be annoying in stop and go traffic. Finally, the entertainment system is a complete joke. I understand that touch screens are all the rage, but this is a truck, I can't use the screen wearing gloves or with dirty hands. Second, Toyota has decided to build their own interface instead of allowing Apple Car Play or Android Auto. Toyota isn't a technology company and nobody wants yet another app (especially a poorly made one) to control the infotainment in their vehicle. To add insult to injury the navigation system is horrible. It's hard to add an address and when you do it often can't be found. Traffic conditions aren't usually accurate so there's little value in the built-in system. My phone sitting on the seat has none of those problems. Overall: If you're looking for a great, capable midsize truck, this is about the best there is.

Still the best truck
This is my third Tacoma...clearly I love these trucks. The TRD PRO has great off-road capabilities...that I probably won't use. I don't go "rock crawling" or anything crazy. The PRO package is slightly over-priced in my opinion...but I still love it, which says alot. I know I could have opted for the TRD Sport or Off-Road...but then it wouldn't be a "PRO." (I'm kinda a sucker). I also lease...and the PRO has very high residual value which kept my payments low. I wish I would have gotten a manual transmission because the automatic seems like it is searching for gears too much. But manual tansmissions are incredibly (and frustratingly) rare. Wish Toyota would make more manual transmission PRO's. The interior is a big upgrade...heated leather seats, quiet ride, solid feel, love the instrumentation. I love this truck. If pressed to find a complaint, I would say I wish it were manual and had a moon roof (available on other packages). I love the blue tooth features, but not a fan of Toyota's navi...I just use my iPhone app for that. Some "Entune" apps are junk (Movie Tickets and restaurant reviews), but others are great (Pandora). I don't like XM/Sirius...not going to pay for radio. The radio knobs are bad...I use the steering wheel controls. (really...radio knobs??? pretty minor complaint, I know). I don't tow anything, or haul excessively heavy loads. I can easily handle half a cord of wood...which is about as heavy as I get. I also shopped light trucks from Nissan, Honda Ridgeline, and GM's Colorado. Honda Ridgeline was great, but felt too much like a car. Didn't care for Nissan. Colorado felt "plasticy" and too lightweight. (fair disclosure...I don't care for GM vehicles, so not sure I gave it fair look. But it seemed like it would be typical GM junk before 5000 miles). Considered a Tundra (because it was at the dealership), but I didn't want or need a full-size truck. I love this Tacoma PRO. Only have 4K miles on it...so things could change. But right now, I love it, highly recommend it, and would totally buy it again. UPDATE - End of my lease. Turned my Tacoma TRD PRO in. Residual value was set by Toyota about $6K less than what it was worth. So the dealership PAID ME a check for (almost) 6 grand. These trucks HOLD THEIR VALUE. I totally would buy another. BEST TRUCKS ON THE MARKET!!! If you need to know...I bought a Jeep. I have wanted one since I was a kid. Leased the Tacoma b/c I used to be a responsible person and I had 2 kiddos...baby seats and open tops didn't seem to go together. I love Tacomas and will own one again...hopefully a 2017 Tacoma TRD PRO.
