Great SUV until the brakes failed

I owned my Highlander for 10 years. I bought her used from a dealer in San Jose, CA in 2005. She drove just like a new vehicle. I loved driving her, took on trips to CA, WA, Portland, Idaho. She was a great vehicle until her brakes failed in November of 2015. I hit a parking island on a dark rainy night in an unlit parking lot. When I stepped on the brakes to stop, the vehicle kept going. I hit 2 other vehicles then a tree before she finally stopped. I am grateful for the safety features of the front bumper and crumple zones on the body. I was wearing my seat belt. However, there was no logical explanation for the brake failure. The vehicle had just been serviced the week before, and I had had no squeaking or problems with the brakes. I still suffer pain in my left shoulder and leg from the accident. My insurance company paid my medical bills for a year, but now the cost is on me. My insurance company also later researched the vehicle and found out there was a recall for the master brake cylinder. Toyota Motor Company never notified me of this recall. For anyone buying a Toyota Highlander, I would highly recommend having the brakes checked thoroughly.

Very solid vehicle. Good fuel economy. Pulls a trailer well. Comfortable front seats and very roomy back seats - great for family trips. Adequate power. Center console design is not very good. Overall a well built family SUV. Oxygen sensor replacement is the only unscheduled maintenance I have had to do.

I tried many other SUV's like Pathfinder, Explorer and Passport before buying this great vehicle. This is oen of the best products from Toyota, It combined the ruggedness of a 4 Runner and comfort of a Camry. I really like my HIGHLANDER

Best I've Owned So Far

We shopped around for an SUV or Van to tow our new tent trailer, and we looked at the Tribute, Pathfinder, XTerra, Liberty, Sienna, and possibly the Odyssey (which was selling above MSRP at the time). One night we came close to getting an offer on a Liberty, but to our great fortune the dealership wasn't seriously negociating. So we, on a lark, tried the Highlander, and I just about fell out the seat when I drove it. It was just out of our top price range, but there was no doubt about getting one. Within 24 hours we made a reasonable deal considering it was new to the market. Then within a week we took it on a 9,000 mile road trip around the US.
