Not So Bad After 13 Years

I bought my Galant GS (manual) new in Jan. '94. It has had no ultra-major issues over the years, just the tie-rods problematic were and it need frequent alignments (and tires). I replaced the timing belt and a few weeks later the water pump died (always get them replaced at same time). I had a valve break off a piece; which cost about $2,000 to replace. I now have about 155,000 miles on it and I'm getting around 27 mpg in city driving. The power is missing from the good ole days but my milage has improved. It burns a little oil but otherwise I expect I could run it up to 200,000 miles. I have the original transmission (but it's a manual and even after grinding numerous gears over 13 years it still shifts fine - though sometimes first is a little sticky to get into).

Bought the Galant LS model new in '94. It's been a really nice machine to drive. It gets great gas mileage and has good handling. I have made several long trips with the Galant and its very comfortable and reliable. The only problems have been with the window motors and lately starting problems. Even though it now is a little rough looking due to lack of care and several teenage drivers, I would still hate to part with it.

I drive for a living, hi-way and streets, doing warranty work for computers so I put 100-200 miles a day of hard driving on my car. I did my first repair at 372k miles when a hose ruptured. Made a "hose" out of duct tape, secured it to the radiator and engine block and drove to the auto parts store where I replaced the hose. The head gasket was replaced at 448k, lower control arm at 537k, original starter at 579k and the engine siezed at 597,893. I did tuneups every four months, fuel filter changed when I changed my clocks, used only hi octane gas (preserves the catalytic convertor this way) Love Galants

I am a mechanic and after a rediculously reliable Honda I bought a Mitsubishi Galant with comfortable seats. This car has comfort and good looks, but I am glad I am a mechanic. I have managed to fix most problems relatively cheaply. I have tips for owners if the central lock stops working - replace the window switch cluster. If your car turns off and won't go until you a few minutes or it maybe turns off then on when driving you need a crank angle sensor on the distributor. The lower ball joints failing make a gunching sound when turning. I had to replace both. Overall this is a nice looking touring car. It has comfort, style, and modest performance, but poor reliability with high milage.

8 Yrs & Still Going Strong

Overall has been a great car and I've more than gotten my moneys worth with over 8 years of continued use. Only major mechanical problem was replacing a transmission at 110k miles which was a bummer because I am rigorous about regular maintenance and checking and changing fluids but other than that the car has been rock solid reliable. I had some minor electrical problems with the car during the first year but everything was repaired under warranty. I’ve thought about “upgrading” the last couple of years but can’t bring myself to spend $25k to buy a comparable vehicle when this car offers similar features and comfort and is still going strong.

I bought this car as my first car in Nov. 1998 with 43K miles in NYC when my daughter was born. Then move to NC with 139K. I still drive this car daily to work. It great on gas and for a 4 cylinder it has the power like a V6. It has 201,500 miles and still pulling strong and quite. Change oil every 3k on time, change timing belt every 60K and tune up on time. Shocking but true. It still has the original rear breaks from factory.WOW I can't believe it either. The only problem i had was alignment, problem solved after i replaced all 4 shocks, no camber kits required. Great car, reliable, quick, fun to drive. I'm expecting to get 250K before my next timing belt change. Then I'll let her go.

Unbeatable Value

I bought a 1995 Mitsubishi Galant S in 2000 with 79,000. I beat the hell out of it but it kept going. This was my pizza delivery car. I put 240,000 city miles on the original engine until it burnt so much oil I got pulled over by a cop because he though my car was on fire. (Cold starts in winter would look like smoke bombs going off.) I recommend this car with the manual transmission if you can find one in decent shape. Despite my criticisms, this car is a really cool car.

I bought the car used at 82000 miles The car is just plain out horrible mechanicly, aesthitically its decent for its year but under the hood its just a huge money pit at 85000 miles it needed a new trans $2,500 to replace (for the auto's) and at 94000 miles my timing belt went has caused over another $2000 worth of damage total this is more than i paid for the car. A long with the recalls and other problems with this car its just an outright horrible buy.

Within the first year I replaced: starter, alternator, transmission, belts. In the recent year, I've replaced the radiator, water pump, 3 alt./pwr. string belt, battery, distributor cap, etc. I've had doors lock/unlock by themselves, and motors on windows go bad. This car stinks.

I had to replace the water pump @80,000 miles And the transaxle torque converter went out @ 143,000 miles other than that those were the only defect items I had to fix. considering what other buyers have said about their trannys i got a good one.

Engine has great torque (155 ft-lb) for a 4 pot & still gets good mileage (24 cty/ 28 hwy w/ auto.) Front coil-over shocks and fully ind. setup is great! – pre 94.5’s have a lower arm recall though. Also the rear arm upper bushings fall apart at 100k miles – 94.5 upgraded. Also killed the rear wheel bearings @ 120k miles. Front inner/outer tie rods replaced @ 100k - Trade-off longevity for handling. Change the balance shaft (small) belt when the timing belt is replaced even if not specified! Engine runs strong at 130k miles with no smoke or leaks. Super reliable. Great value only dampened by the shifty automatic, which also drops your mileage.

Bought used from a friend. Garage kept, routine maintenance, had 100k when purchased. Rode great for the first year I had it. Then I experienced electrical problems--power windows' motor breaking (wasn't able to roll them up,happened in december, great timing!!!),power locks had a mind of their own (got locked out several times).recently (133K) had big problems, water pump needed to be replaced along with heater core. heater core part only existed in JAPAN!!! and costs $700. so i warn you about certain foreign cars...they could cost you big bucks to fix.

I have had this car for 4 years and it is now 7 years old. Great car. Well made and well laid out. New ones are even better, except that they dont have the fold down seat of these older ones. My 2.4ltr 4-cyl engine has 160,000 miles and no problems made a couple of east to west coast round trips. Its also easy to work on yourself.

right after I bought the car I had transmission troubles, wheel bearings gone, cracked crank case - all of which was replaced under warranty. But now my AC is gone. The Transmission is again slipping/hesitating and the car 'feels' like it has other things planned for me. I just wish I had bought the Used Altima I was comparing it against.

I was deciding between this model and the Nissan Altima and, even though I had a Nissan Sentra (which had been a perfect car -operationally) I read the reviews (some of them here) and bought the Galant. To my disappointment it was a lemon and Goldstien service sucked! The transmission was replaced along with two wheel bearing and all four brakes. Now the AC is gone and the new transmission is slipping and it's only got 53,000.00 miles on it give me a brake!

I just bought the car a few days ago and it runs beautifully and handles like a true sports car should. I found it to be very stylish and affordable and it also seems very easily serviceable. The only thing is that there is no power anything except steering and brakes and The A/C doesn't work well.

I bought this car used (it was an off- lease vehicle) several years ago. I have not had any problems (except the typical maintainance) with it, except for a recall notice on my gas tank. It rides fairly smooth. It does burn about 1/2 quart of oil every 1000 miles or so.

I bought my '95 Galant with 19,000 miles on it and drove to about 150,000 (and that was after being rearended by a semi around 60,000 miles). The only complaint I had with the car was expensive timing belts and finally a fluke that caused me to sell it. My wife took the car one day, she called me and said it was running funny. So,we had it towed to a local shop. They said that the a/c belt had come off. When the a/c belt broke, it got sucked up under the timing belt cover. The shop replaced the timing belt and the pulleys, but it never ran right after that, so I sold it. Had it not been for that fluke I'd still be driving it today.

This car was what I was looking for. Business suit grey and 60k miles when I bought it. About 2 months after owning it, someone hit me head on about 20mph (each of us doing around 10mph) The airbags never deployed. After the 'fenderbender' the car quite literally began to fall apart! The clock/radio quit working (half the lights worked, but they did not function properly). The engine light would come on and smoke at stop lights. Transmission started to slip about 2x per month. The exhaust broke w/NO warning. The power window switch bundle on drivers door caught fire when I used the auto-down feature. ---Very upset about the lacking quality.

I bought the car used with 46k miles and it's been very reliable. Having the timing belt changed could be a bit expensive at $450 each recommended service change. Warning! Somewhere around the 96K, I started seeing blue smoke coming from the tailpipe. The dealership told me it was the valves and it would cost $3000 to repair. A friend told me it was common problem with most late model Mitsubishi vehicles. And to take notice on my way home, I took notice and it appeares that all the late models I saw did smoke.

Trouble free auto 144000 miles. All power accessories work fine. Double wishbone suspension at all corners make this car very agile. With H rated and traction A tires this baby loves to be tossed through the curves, and at it's limits sliding is predictable, smooth and controlled with minimum understeer. A drivers car! Four valves per cylinder, sequential electronic fuel injection and factory headers for intake and exhaust translate into tire spinning low power torque when the pedal is stomped. All original power train and exhaust (stainless steel) Real reliable car. All paid for and not interested in a new car.

95 Galant first car

For my first car, I ended up buying a 95' galant. I had looked into many other cars, and when I finally test drove the galant, I decided to buy it. The car is incredibly powerful for only 141 horses and a 4 cylinder, especially mated to the 5-speed manual. The only problems I've had were with my alternator, which froze because i left the car sitting in the cold, through snow in the winter for 3 months without running it. Otherwise, the car has been extremely reliable, and already, I have a potential buyer when I sell it.

I bought this car as my first car in Nov. 2002. The car has been great to me. Many people said that Mitsus were unreliable but so far, that seems not to be true. The car runs perfectly and the engine sounds smoother than most newer cars. The only problem I had was that the alternator froze over, but that's because I left the car sitting in the cold for over 2 and a half months.

I love this car. It's been in my family for about 8 years (survived 2 undergrad colleges) and we've had very few problems with it. Right now it's at a good 155K mi and it seems like it can't wait to start up in the morning. I figure it's good for another 50K with regular oil changes. It's a good buy- I would recommend this car to anyone.

I bought my 1995 Galant with 68K on it just about 2 years ago. I put 40K on it to date. I found it very comfortable compared to my Tercel, and the engine, even linked to an automatic, was acceptable. As the miles wore on, things wore out: the engine and tranny are suddenly developing some severe problems, the trunk leaks, the moonroof motor burned out, the fuel door latch doesn't work, the power locks don't work, the power windows are badly aligned and struggle to move along their track. On the plus side, the car has been rear-ended twice by BIG SUVs. I wouldn't buy another Mitsu, though.

Last week after 3 months - $3,023 and 6 transmissions later all within the same 3 months I finally gave up on it.... now I face only getting $750 back for my rebuilt transmission and my car will be left without a transmission practically not worth anything. configuration(1994), My car has had a total of 10 transmissions in the 6 years i've had it.

On the whole, this car has been great! It is very dependable and I get approximately 25 mpg. It still runs well at 133,000+ miles. I have had to replace the timing belt twice (per manual recommendations) and usual maintenance such as brakes, belts, tires. The only major repair that I had to make was to replace the distributor. I intend to keep driving this car until it starts costing too much to repair. I would recommend this car to anyone.
