For a better car, avoid high end options

2005 MINI Cooper S 2dr Convertible (1.6L 4cyl S/C 6M)

The Cooper S convertible really DOES feel like a go-kart, it is a blast to drive, and people all want to make friends with such a cute little car. But the dynamic stability control is wildly overassertive (slammming on the brakes at the slightest chirp of wheelspin), the optional automatic climate control is a disastrous triumph of cutesy (shaped like the Mini crest) over ergonomic, and the optional Harmon-Kardon stereo upgrade is only marginal at best. If you delete these options, you'll not only save money, you'll have a MUCH better experience of the car...simple, direct, delightful. Mini gets into trouble when they try to get too fancy..but when they just go for fun, they get it right!

This is the most fun car I have ever driven. I like to discribe it as a " fast go cart". The car is new ( less than 700 miles), so I have not had any problems. Everybody who has driven the vehicle, has fallen in love with it.

Flawless -- so far

I find it odd how some people claim to have such bad experiences with car. I think they are the ones who write reviews, and the others (the vast majority) are out driving. I'm in the latter category. I have had not one single breakdown, broken anything, or even a rattle develop in 6 months/7,000 miles of driving it. In fact, I can't believe I've already put 7,000 miles on it. I had one defect from the get-go, but it's so minor, it's hardly worth mentioning: the driver's-side door handle's LED seems to have omitted at the factory (the passenger-side one is present). Oh the horror! I can recommend this car without qualification as one with the best build, quality, fun and value out there.

CVT Engine has flaws

I had to have a MINI! I purchased it one month ago, the S with the CVT engine. It has been in the shop twice in one month, still is at the time of this review. Both times I've been told it's the DEM/Computer. It had to be sent to New Jersey, I'm in Dallas, to be reprogrammed. Not good! It's been a week since it stalled on my in traffic. Bad safety hazard! I would not have purchased the CVT engine if I'd known of the problems with it! I have one more time to have this problem before I can file the Lemon Law paperwork in Texas. In addition, there are not enough certified MINI mechanics to keep up with the demand. Poor, Poor, Poor turnaround time on service!
