People who purchase in this range tend to be pickey. I've had mine for three years now, and while the 99's did have niggling little problems, all in all this is an extremely fine vehicle. It has spirited accelleration, corners with grace at higher than expected speeds, has a cavernous hauling area in the back, and an excpetional ride. And it IS a Mercedes. I'm very pleased with mine, and would highly recommend you give it a close look. Mercedes has loaded a tremendous amount of GOOD ENGINEERING into this vehicle. Read their brochure, and this will all become very clear. Well done MB.
mercedes 2002 m class
HANDLED GREAT WAS SMOOTH WITH HARDLEY ANY EXTERIOR NOISE. CAR FELT TIGHT BUT SMOOTH AT THE SAME TIME. THE SEATS ARE VERY COMFORTABLE TO RIDE IN. THE INTERIOR DESIGN IS CLASSIC BUT MODERN. THIS CAR FEELS MORE LIKE A SEDAN NOT AN SUV. THIS CAR HANDLED GREAT AT HIGHER SPEED TURNS WITH OUT THE FEELING OF SWAYING OR TIPPING OVER. WAS A FUN CAR TO DRIVE DROVE AND FELT MORE LIKE AN EXPENSIVE SEDAN. RECOMMEND BUYING THIS CAR.

2002 ML320-Love it!
Also owned a 1998 model...love this one!
ML500
Love the ML500. Park Place gives excellent service.
THE SUV
The ML has a lot of minor annoying build quality problems and this distracts from the capability of the truck. A good dealership makes the difference between frustration and having an excellent ownership experience. Now, the ML is a great deal in the market. The drive is great and it's offroad prowess is really second to none, not even the Cayenne can keep up!! The ML500 is the choice and the best SUV deal anywhere, period.
NO REGRET
I JUST BOUGHT THIS ML320 FOR LESS THAN A MONTH, SO PRETTY MUCH NOT REALLY MUCH TO COMMENT ABOUT. BUT OVERALL SO FAR SO GOOD, I LIKE THE INTERIOR DESIGN, VERY LITTLE ROAD NOISE, ITS EXTERIOR DESIGN, DRIVING COMFORT, ERGONOMICS, TELE-AID AND OTHER PERSONAL FEATURES. I HAVE NO REGRET.
love my new ml320
My new ml320 is everything I expected it to be. The ride is solid. Mercedes qulity from front to back. Don't believe the whiners. It's a great SUV.
I LOVE IT!!!
After going back and forth between the ML320 and the Lexus RX 300 I feel we made the best decision. The free maintance more than makes up for the price difference. It drives very smooth and easy to whip into parking spaces. We are now a Mercedes-Benz family for life.
ML500 - Excellent buy
Bought used with 25,000 km. Great deal, had depreciated a lot and bought it through a broker - Royalty Auto for $42k CDN. Great experience. Had it for 6 months now. Needed winter tires (we're in Calgary) and it handles well in the snow. No maintenance issues so far. I am not using a dealer for the maintenance, prices much better. We have 2 large dogs and a new house and have hauled lots of stuff with no problems. The versatility of the rear seats is excellent. The 5litre engine has plenty of power and a good roar, but gas use isn't as terrible as I'd expected. Had it inspected by 3rd party before I bought. Brakes squeak when cold
Great vehicle
Dependable every time you get to drive it.

Chrysler side of the Family
I own an SL500 and was impressed with the quality and craftmanship so when I need and SUV the ML was a logical choice. That is what I used to think. This think has been in the for service 6 times for electrical and cosmetic issues. My SL never has been so I am not unreasonable or a motor head that covers it etc... Overall do not buy this car for the money you can have an BMW X-5 with out the headaches!
Much better than a minivan.
Needed all wheel drive and 3rd row of seats. The small turning circle diameter is great. This was the best handling and most nimble suv we drove. The interier hardware is fragile and we have replaced rear cupholders/vents 5 times (all under warranty). The moonroof had broken twice and the power steering feels underboosted when making sharp u-turns. The accelerator pedal is s-l-o-w to inputs. Our dealership does not have enough loaner cars. Our local BMW dealership is much more responsive but X-5 does not have 3rd row of seats. We tow a boat with this and it works much better than our Tundra pickup truck for towing.
Superb, Enjoy every minute driven
My 3rd ML after a 98, 2000. This is it! All bugs fixed, hardly goes to the dealer for any problems. Best part is the free Service for the warranty period. If people buying a cheaper fors or GM would add the service cost they would find it cheaper to own an ML and safer too. Advice; Don't miss the convenience option, I love the lights under the rearview mirror, and the folding outside mirrors
Beware of the brake!
This ML55 was meant for my wife, and she does love this SUV. But the biggest problem with it, is the braking system. It was a nightmare! The disc only lasted less than 10k, over the 4yrs of ownership. We have spend over $4k on the brake job alone! As I have found out that MB has one of the worst braking systems in the world, and the worst part is that they insisted there are nothing wrong with it! I strongly suggest all consumers not to purchase MB, until they resolve the problems. Most of the other problems are minimum, as it comes with all luxory cars. We drive BMWs now, its a step down. But at the least, we don't have to worry about the maintenance!
PERFECT SO FAR
No problems after 12,000. powerful, comfortable and safe.
Big Hassle
When our ML 320 works, it drives great. The problem is we have had about eighteen separate malfunctions in a little over two years. The power seats continually come unplugged and don't work; the CD changer is not reliable; the window washer container cracked; the rear view mirror fell off while driving. I would never purchase a car like this. It is terrible.
2001 ml 320
9000 miles on a new 2001 ml320 has been uneventful. no service of any kind has been required.
ML320 cure for Jeep
Former top of the line Jeep Cherokee owner. The ML320 has the cure for disatisfied Jeep owners. No SUV yawl. Solid, luxury ride. Excellent brakes which do not fade on windy coastal roads like Jeep. Interior is quiet.. no wind noise.
More UTE than SPORT
This is our first Mercedes, but not our first SUV (we have had Jeeps in the past). We stepped up for lots of reasons - Safety, performance and Status (this car is used in a sales environment). The ML500 is simply an amazing vehicle. It is comfortable and FAST. I would prefer a smoother ride with less jostling over the bumps in the road, but the trade-off for that kind of safety seems well worth it. The ML500 has had its share of little picky issues - namely a touchy fuel gauge and mirrors that do not adjust with the memory seats. Again, small potatos for that kind of peformance. It feels like a car that will last forever!
ML320
Poor dealer service. Dealrs don't treat this vehicle/ customers the same as they do for their cars.
Great Car
I tested the Lexus RX300 (lacking power) and LX470 (too big), Cadillac Escalade (for sports stars and rappers) and Acura MDX (cheap interior; sluggish). None of those cars could compare to the ML500. I love the navigation, comfort and all of the amenities. Great car. No rattles and no regrets.
ML500
Terrific SUV that has shown zero quality issues other than the brakes squealing in cold weather.
7th mercedes owned
Owned Mercedes since 1976. From 190E thru stationwagons. By far the best appearance since 1979 Wagon, great ride, show stopping appearance. Hard dealing to get acceptable purchase price with trade (Mercedes). Would do it again in a heartbeat.
We got what we paid for
This truck is the third Mercedes-B in our family but it's the first one that was made in USA. We were very concerned about the bad reputation so we researched some information on the X5 and Land Rover as well. We talked to the Land Rover dealers in VA and they told us that the truck was over-priced. And we agreed that we didn't like the shape of X5. ML 320 is the best pick for both of us. It's very nice, comfortable, safe and reliable. We don't have any problem so far.
RE cars
I am a mother, very good handling
needs redesign
The use of a spacesaver spare moves this car to a nonreliable vehicle status. The tire used for this vehicle is not readily available from a tire dealer, and must be ordered. Delivery: 2 to 7 days. If you trash a tire on your vaction trip across the USA you won't be able to pick up a replacement along the way, and you can't drive an extended time on the toy tire. Bad move on the part of the manufacturer. Also the location of the spare: under the vehicle has problems. Can be damaged, and hard to get to except in ideal conditions.
Dme cars
very good handling, 4wdrive sytem
POOR CRAFTMANSHIP
I had my SUV for 3 months and been to deeler couple of times due to poor product design: First the astray failed and have to keep the car overnight co, they have to take apart the median console area. Second the driver side sealer pop out they to replace the section that hold the fancy mercedes name as you step in the car. But its fun to drive, the luxury feature are great then again it drink gas. Overall I'm happy, as long little things will hold.
Love the SUV
Very elegent and powerful SUV. A definite Headturner. Afterall - a Mercedes is a Mercedes. Nothing compares to it. Someone has rightly said - Life is too short and the roads too long to drive anything else except a Mercedes-Benz. Lots of Safety features - comfortable interior seating surfaces. Very nice and thoughtful small features. Love the SUV.
ML500 Review
Surprisingly good build quality considering all of the negative press
Nice Powerful Utility Merc
Besides better economy of fuel what more could I ask for?
Review
This car is good, I like it. I recomend it to everyone who is thinking about a luxury SUV. I like its off road capabilities and smooth highway ride.
I Love It More...
My 89LC was mint & incredible off- road, but was severely underpowered, handled like a ship, fatiguing, had no safety features, and got 10mpg, but I still loved it for what it was when I sold it after 9yrs. The ML55AMG's engine has an exceptional powerband, a fantastic interior, handles like a sports sedan, is extremely comfortable, has all the gadgets, can consistently get 15MPG (combined) if I don't "floor it" constantly, 18MPG on long trips, and is incredible fun. The cup holders are too flimsy, its has limited cargo space, and it has too much wind noise, but short of the Kawa ZX11 and 69 BMW 2002 I once owned, I've never loved a vehicle nearly as much
not competitive with other suvs in class
Mbz Doesn't hold its value at trade in time. Kind of tank like in ride and handling. Cheap interior and parts inside will fall off and don't feel good to the touch. Tiresome ride after 30 minutes.
Absolutely the BEST
If you're reading the negative comments posted here and wondering wether or not to buy an ML, trust me...... BUY ONE. This has got to be one of the best driving vehicles I have ever driven. After over a year of owning my ML 320, I still giggle at how smoothly, quietly, and comfortably this vechicle really is. I have owned other SUV's and believe me, there is no comparison. You have to experience it to understand.
Love the SUV - Hate the minor repairs
The car has been perfect for us in terms of design, comfort, features, durability, etc. Our gas mileage has been better than expected at 18.6 city and up to 23+ highway (I confess to having a heavy foot so it's often only 22). Brakeware has been super too; 45,000mi front and rears are still OK at 72,000mi. But, had to replace fuel pump, windshield washer checkvalve, "baby safe" seat sensor, and an instrument panel bulb. Nothing major, but even with good service (and free loaner cars) it's been a hassle some time.
poor quality ML320
too many serious mechanical problems, including replacement of shocks, steering mechanism, ac motor and switch
Excellent Car
Good work MB,, Good Truck after the update.. Lot of well design features..
Just got one
Looked at buying a used 00 or 01. GLAD we went with an 02. FAR nicer vehicle. Smoother, quieter, many nicer features (climate control, vents and controls for the rear seat passengers, etc...). The vehicle is very easy to drive. I would recommend it for someone who likes the additional room an SUV provides in the rear, but doesn't want to drive a huge vehicle.
excellent
Great car,Great to drive, Great in snow,Great gas mi.Good power,Fun to drive
The new ml 320 2002
I love my new ml320 2002 model. It's fun to drive and it's loaded with features. Nothing beats a Mercedes Benz. I don't think I will ever go back to either a Japanese or American car ever again.
Mercedes ML500
I'm thoroughly pleased with this vehicle. The SUV provides a comfortable ride and feels safe in all weather. Great and comfortably priced introduction to a Mercedes.
good suv
I am from scotland and have the ml270cdi, I have read all the problems with the old model and do not like its look inside or out but the facelift modle is very good and mated to the auto mated to the 270cdi is one very smooth drivetrain. I have the rear spare wheel holder that makes it look very tough.Like an suv should.I just wish I could have had the 400cdi. I get 33 mpg and found the x5 easy to dicount. I need the low ratio gears and also the $6000 price differnce. Anyway love the car.`,
Should have bought the Wagon
Nothing but problems. Great concept but pretty poor quality. I bought this with the understanding that quality issues were resolved, unfortunately (for me amd MB) not the case.
its the best
i have just purchased an ml500 with all the options and features its amazing it drives like a luxury sedan, its roomy, comfortable, powerful and capable
Great SUV!
We recently purchased the ML500 and have extremely pleased. Build quality is excellent, contrary to prior models. Engine is smooth, powerful and very fast. Very comfortable interior and ride. Good handling. Plenty of luggage space. Bose sound system is phenominal. Nvatigation system is excellent and very accurate. Overall, a great car.
Nice SUV
I've owned a Jeep Grand Cherokee,Chevy Tahoe, and now the best damn SUV on the market. What's not to like now that the bugs are out of it. Quiet, smooth, comfortable, and I hope it's as dependable as my C220 with 130,000 miles and very minor problems as compared to both my former SUV's. Time will tell.FOr now I'm thrilled.I drove the X-5 and if you like driving your couch, buy one.
NOT WORTH THE MONEY...
Mercedes benz sales people are talented in their B.S. but for the money this one is DOG! Buy something else, Mercedes has cut too many corners to make this car affordable however it must looks like a Mercedes and acts like a Dodge! Happy hunting!
Sad story
In 1998, after watching Jurassic Park featuring the original ML320, we headed towards town to wait-list and buy it. Big mistake. They were so rare that we weren't able to test drive. Only through broshures. Our #1 ML was full of problems, so Mercedes offered to trade us to a '99 ML320. The instrument panel (lower) collapsed mysteriously, and the trunk hinge rattled like crazy. Traded in for a '02 ML320. The new bumpers look worse. I should have got an X5 or RX300. I currently also own a 2002 S430, and it's WORSE than the ML
Think Twice Before Buying a BENZ!!
The truck was billed as Top of the Line with Mercedes Quality-While the engine performed well it was a PIG on as consumption!! The brakes went out after 11000 miles-unheard of for an American car let all the "top line" Mercedes truck- Also a number of minor problems such as a cracked storage bottle for washer fluid easy to break cup holders. Moreover, the service stinks-Mercedes was unwilling to assume any responsibilty for the brakes and wrote a letter saying in essence I was lucky to be driving a Mercedes. An underwhelming experience - Never again will I buy a Mercedes!!!!
