2017 350 GLE 4matic

2017 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class GLE 350 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 7A)

This review is for a previously owned 2017 I purchased in 2018. I'd give it a 4.5 stars but couldn't see how to do that so I filled out the subratings to help. I traded a 2010 RD E350 Sport for this essentially 7 month old 350 GLE 4matic a little over 9000 miles on it. My other car is a beloved 2014 Audi Q5 TDI (still the best power plant on the planet). The 350 GLE is big, heavy (4600 lb) 5 passenger SUV. It has a large cargo area (much larger than the Q5) and with the rear seats folded down at least twice as much. This review is based on the road trip of 200 miles to pick it up at an out of town dealer and trips around our hometown (mixed driving). I was motivated to do this because I felt the Edmunds video review was unfair assessment compared to the written write-up. The author in the video commented negatively on the ride, lack of road feel in the steering and the blind spots due to the pillars. This is not an off-road SUV though it has a "setting" for it. This is your classic MBZ ride (firm but not jarring with an overall soft feel that still leaves you in control). It is the car you would take on the long trip because of that and the excellent front seats. Yes the steering is like butter but what you expect from this class of vehicle. It is not hazardous soft. It goes where you point it and you don't have to work to park this large vehicle. I don't see the issue for the segment and target audience (more mature drivers looking for luxury ride and appointments). Yes compared to the Q5 the GLE side mirrors are smaller, but the side blind spot warning is excellent. So even if the car alongside me was not in the mirror, it was noted in the mirror via the warning lights. It is not a safety issue. I can see already that gas mileage is going to be 19-20 mph on the highway at the 70+ mph I'm usually going. Moving 4600 lbs will do that. Acceleration is more than adequate. I have played with changing to the Sport setting and it appears to make for smoother starts because in the Comfort mode you have to work the accelerator carefully to start smoothly. Sport starts in 1st gear rather than 2nd the acceleration is cleaner, at least to me. Braking is good, you just have to apply it harder than I am used to. Either the Q5 diesel deceleration or the E350 lighter weight required less braking to coast to stop. Just a learned skill for this larger car. While the screen icons are updated compared to the 2010 E350, the overall layout of the controls is essentially the same as the 2010 system but the system seems to respond better perhaps because of a better processor. The "mouse" pad is not my favorite so far as I use the control knob in the joystick mode to move around the screen. One comment on CPO versus non-CPO cars. We got this SUV before it was CPO'd. There was nothing stopping it getting CPO'd other than it was ready for sale. The dealer said if it had been CPO'd, it would have added around $2500 to the sale price. What you get for that is one year more of warranty without a mileage limit. Yes there is a checklist but the elements of the overall warranty remain exactly the same in either case. Given this vehicle had almost 3.5 years left on the warranty, I did not feel that it was worth the CPO. You should search and read the Edmund's article on CPO versus non-CPO. They pretty much lay out the reason to not worry about buying a pre-owned vs. CPO pre-owned under the right conditions. This car met them and I ended up saving the cash getting the car for $15K below its original MRSP. Car had P1, P2 and Parking assist packages, 20 inch tires with special rims and a towing hitch (which I won't use). You really must get the Parking Assist package because the surround view is well worth it.

Best luxury SUV.

You can read the reviews and buy a Volvo XC90 or Audi Q7.....or you can buy a car that exudes luxury and looks much more than it costs. The GLE is safe, luxurious, technologically advanced (it drives itself with adaptive cruise control and lane assist), and comfy. I test drove all of the major luxury SUVs -- Audi, BMW, Range Rover, Volvo, Jaguar, Porsche. I also test drove the SUVs that are considered best sellers in their class -- Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, etc. This car blows all of them out of the water in terms of value. The new Volvo and Audi may sound like they are technologically superior based on their Car & Driver reviews since they are new...however, the same technology is available in a more luxurious GLE for thousands less than the Audi, and the reliability is in a class above the Volvo. The Audi also looks like a boring Dodge minivan in contrast to the beautiful lines on the GLE. This is not a sporty SUV like the BMW X5....but I am not the kind of person who buys an SUV to replace my sedan....this is the large functional family car. It is also much more luxurious than the spartan BMW interior design (BMW X5 is plastic-like on its interior; the GLE is significantly more luxurious). I want comfy, luxurious, practical, and value in my SUV. The GLE fulfills all of those criteria. Additionally, it is significantly safer. Best purchase ever. Glad I didn't read the reviews and buy the Audi.

I drive about 20,000 miles a year for work, so I needed something that would be comfortable and also safe, and the GLE 350 is both! Not to mention stylish and sporty, its the total package.

Perfect SUV in so many ways

Coming from an older E350, I expected similar luxury and strong engine. Nope, it is far superior. Owned it 1 month, and I drive a lot. Fantastic ride (no body roll or dips), excellent over NY bumps, powerful V6, and top notch interior. The only thing I don't like is that the 2 cupholders in front are different sizes, one for a normal size water bottle, and one for a smaller coffee cup size. Riding with my wife, we each have a water bottle and hers doesn't fit. Crazy. But EVERYTHING else about this baby is great. Mercedes tend to not hold their value, which is great - the sticker on this was $68K in 2017. I just bought it in June 2020 for $32K! I'm sure glad it didn't hold its value for the first 3 years. For that price it had 44K miles but it's dealer certified. My E350 had 178K miles and was still going strong - nothing major ever happened to it, but the MB-Tex was ripping badly. So I have no doubt I will own this puppy for a long time. What I Like Most: 1. Leather seats - mine had the $1,620 option, very hard to find. 2. Large gas tank (24.6 gal) - means not stopping to fill often. 3. Ride - just smooth as can be. 4. Appearance - what a beauty. 5. Sound system - Harmon Kardon isn't great but it's good enough; has Satellite, Bluetooth streaming, single CD player, HD radio, SD disk, USB, and CarPlay. 6. Ride height - not too high (like a Jeep). What I Dislike Most: Cupholders, that's it. Actually just 1 cupholder. The other is fine. And they heat and cool at the touch of a button. It won't chill your drink, but it will keep it cold if it already is. There's no real difference in the model in any of the years 2016-2019, so grab one in that range and you will get a luxury, quality SUV. In 2020 they went to a 4-cyl turbo. It's prob fine but the V6 is very quiet and doesn't hesitate at the least. Compared with the X5 (top heavy with body roll), Macan (too small but rode great, terrible sound system). Cayenne (rode like a nice boat), Q5 (small and noisy), Santa Fe (2020 had tons of features, but body and front seat springs made creaking sounds), F-Pace (rough ride test drive over bumpy NY roads), Discovery Sport (basically a junior F-Pace).

This car is nothing but class. Previously I owned an ML 350 2012, and this one is more superior. While the Mercedes ride is as smooth as ever, the navigation system is much easier to work with and the 360° Camera for backing upis wonderful. The interior of the car is soft very I appealing to the eye and has very nice ambience lighting. Acceleration is terrific as is the sound system. Five stars for sure. Pricey, but worth every penny.

This replaced a BMW 328i as my daily driver. I needed/wanted a larger vehicle for highway driving as well as more storage and space. I am shocked at how well this drives and how sporty it is when in Sport or Sport+ mode. I find it quicker than the BMW and nearly as capable in the curves. It is unquestionably heavier and it is not a true sports car but the driving experience and sportiness are far exceeding my expectation. I love the semi-autonomous driving features for long stretches on the highway. This is an incredibly versatile vehicle.

All going well with purchase, BUT tried to download the Mercedes Benz Apps that comes with the 5 year mbrace Connect. Nothing. Mercedes and mbrace say there's no current fix. Of course, you can't check this out until after you buy the car and register it with mbrace. Dealership says, not our problem, mbrace says you aren't paying for it, so we'll fix when/if we fix it. Two months and waiting. Mercedes shouldn't advertise it if they're not going to back it up. Otherwise, a tad stiffer than the 'comfort' mode would lead you to believe, but quiet with nice interior. It comes with a spare tire and jack. (I hate run flats.) +Seems about 3" higher than similar SUV's. It does, however, have limiting feature for the lift gate if you're parking it in a garage to prevent scraping from the overhead The Premium 1 package has the basics you need. Suggest the Parking Assist package just because having the surround view is a hoot.

So Far Very Very Good

This is my first "luxury" car. So far it definitely fits. Mindful about a couple of reviews slightly downgrading this car's roadholding capabiliy, I got the Night pkg option which includes the 20 inch sports tires. It grips/handles just fine around all the many curves I've gone around. It steers & shifts like a dream. The ride at all speeds with the 20 inch tires is not overly soft or firm, about right for me. Comfort inside is outstanding, most notably for 238 lb me the front seat. Quality of workmanship is the highest. Except for some tire sound, noise inside is virtually non- existent. Exterior & interior styling with the polar white paint & black Night pkg & black anthracite interior trim is fully satisfying. My only quibble so far is the transmission shifting, a stalk on the steering column which takes concentrated effort to get used to - most especially you must remember to push the little button into Park before you exit the car, or it will automatically shift into neutral & possibly start moving! I've got the hang of it now. Being an older geezer, I'm also on a learning curve re the Nav, Media, etc procedures. In sum - truly so far very very good.

I have had this car (brand new) for 7 months. It has been in service 7+ times for an issue. The AC smelt within 45 days of purchase, sunroof had to be reset by dealership because it wouldn’t close, coolant tank cracked with first freeze, 4 check engine lights for varies reasons and repairs. Mercedes has fixed all repairs under my warranty but has had no reasonable undestanding of why I am upset about the trouble and inconvenience. MB USA has the worst customer service and impossible to reach. I would NEVER recommend Mercedes to anyone since this is how they treat their customers. Please don’t assume that because it’s a luxury vehicle, it’s a luxury experience or reliable.

Great ride and handling as you can expect with German Cars in general. I owned the ML350 before and I thought it had better ride than this one. Gas mileage is decent and consistent with specifications. Roomy interior but higher seats seem to interfere with tall person getting in and out. Pros: looks sharp and has a great road feel. Lane departure warning is excellent and highly recommended. Cons: electronics user interface are extremely poor, even dangerous. Voice command is decade old technology. Don't waist your money on Smartronix package it is useless at best - Does not self park as you might be led to believe and the cameras do not activate automatically when you pull into a parking spot. Small screen without touch screen option is a HUGE miss considering the cumbersome user interface.

Great buy, my wife and I have own a M class since MB began making them. We now own the GLE-350 AWD 3.6L. We love the interior and exterior, the car performs well in all weather conditions, we are formally from Virginia where weather is very seasonal. Our cars have performed well in the snow as well as the rain. I’ve seen the rating on the Lexus and Audi also have friends that own these cars. Once they road in our M class or GLE they were thinking they may have made a mistake. Test drive at least once and you’ll buy it. We’ve been fortunate to live near great dealerships especially the one in Fredericksburg,Va.

I buy a new car just about since a year, have had everything from bottom of line models like Ford all the way to the top of the line Mercedes. When this model came out I had to have one and not a disappointment. I had a 2015 ML 350 for about a year (only because I missed having remote start) until I traded it for a 2016 Escalade, huge disappointment and couldn't wait to get into another Mercedes. This vehicle is a dream, you get power, comfort, space, and true luxury all wrapped up in the perfect size sport SUV. I would recommend this (or any Benz) to anyone looking to buying a new car.

Luxury suv with goods, bad's and ugly's

I rent the base model when the car rental ran out of cars and gave us an impassible upgrade deal. Car looks great as I caught many glances from passerby like am a rich guy, funny it was when people judge me by the look, oh well!!! Here is the good, bad and the ugly. Good: look, very quiet, feel slow like 55 mph but actually fly at 85, parking assist with great view even in low light, great interior and fitting, really cold a/c, big trunk area, good space 2nd row. Bad: slow acceleration, only use super unleaded at least 91 octane, gas guzzler when use cruise control, no 3rd row, keeps asking me to rest with night driving almost every hour. And the UGLY are: rain activated wipers that wipe like I dance on hot charcoals with no option to control its rate (make visibility nil and very dangerous; better with slower swing so I can still see in between the beats; too fast and the water can't drain off the windshield); next is the rotating selector and the little screen that I can use my finger to write, instead I wanted to give it a finger; an absolutely waste of time, unless Benz replaces it with touch screen than I will call it AWESOMENESS, not yet Benz. The next troll is the seat design. Worse than an "economy" car. Not only my butt but all passengers ended up with butt bruises, well that is a little exacerbated but it was a "pain in the butt". The seats are tooo firm, Benz, unless Germans was spanked so much when little that they have better tolerance. And lumbar support for front seats are bad that I had to snug a small blanket there. Ok, I rant much now so need a break. Until next time...

For $136K with tax and license I expected something better. Opinions vary on looks, but I think it is a great, impressive looking car. It is fast, quiet, and feels very solid and comfortable on the road. The airmatic suspension is wonderful in leveling out the ride even in turns. The upgraded B&O stereo is amazing. It's failings are many. I cannot get the seat comfortable. The problem for me is where my legs leave the front edge of the seat. There is no thigh support extension on the AMG GLE 63 Coupe. I have the multicontour seats. You can adjust the side bolsters and front edge. Like blowing up air bags. The side bolsters will hold you nice and firm. The front edge of the seat with the air cushion is just plain uncomfortable. Like sleeping on a blowup air mattress. It is hard at any inflation level. Really, really annoying to me. The navigation system is totally worthless. I don't even want to detail all the problems with it. From laboriously putting in an address to a voice control that functions only with exact addresses, if it understands you at all, and I mean exact. If you manage to get your destination in, navigation can be a problem as well as it tells me to turn when I am in the middle of making the turn, not beforehand. Thankfully Android Auto with Google navigation functions great on the car, but then you have to plug your phone in and out everytime you come and go. An annoyance. I am thinking of getting a cell phone just to leave hooked up to the car. All the safety electronic stuff is worthless. The Active Blind Spot Assist and the Lane Keeping Assist work only at certain speeds and with specific road conditions and markings. So it is totally unreliable. The Stop and Go cruise control is also problematic and not the convenience it is advertised to be. Even the Eco engine feature only works under certain conditions. If too many electronics are on, it won't work as to not drain the battery. Too many electronics as in AC, stereo, and ventilated seats!!! So this car excels as a Sport SUV car, but really, really fails as a luxury coupe. I would not buy another one, and I find the seat so uncomfortable, I am considering taking the loss and trading it in for some other car.

I just want to point out that I’ve never bought a used car before and I absolutely love my 2017 GLE350 4Matic AMG-Night Sport Edition. It has all the creature features that I’ve always wanted such as massaging seats, light up front MB emblem, panoramic roof, soft close doors, temperature controlled cupholders and so much more. I know there is a brand-new model for 2020 and I’m looking into hopefully purchasing another in the next year or so.

There aren't many SUV's out there these days that even look like SUV's - more like wedges with wheels. The ones with decent styling, like the GMCs or Jeeps have their own set of problems. I really was trying to avoid a "status" symbol, but at the end of the day, the Benz had it all: styling, comfort, reliability, safety, utility, and quality. It has excellent acceleration and a luxurious, quiet ride. Love the sound system and the parking cameras. The outside dimensions are perfect for a mid-size SUV with an excellent turning radius, along with plenty of cargo space for my needs. I'm not a fan of the steering shift selector and you better remember to press "park" (or it stays in neutral and will roll), but you get used to it. It takes awhile to learn all the features and they are not particularly intuitive. Fuel economy is not great (I average 18mpg), but like the large gas tank that comes with it. Routine maintenance is expensive, but so far no problems. In summary, I am very happy with my purchase and still look forward to driving it even if it is a "status symbol" (and that's not all bad either!)

Acceleration feel like this car is making a sound to overcome inertia or friction. My Honda accelerated better than this. We want touch screen else keep on using goggle maps on my phone.

Worst Car I Owned

This is the worst car I drove in 40 years. At first, when I drove it with the dealer sales rep, I was impressed of the technology, i.e., navigation, Attention Assist, Lane Assist, etc. Perhaps, the salesman was very convincing that I did not pay attention to other important factors I have to consider before closing the deal. It was too late for me to realize that the car I got did not have a spare tire, but instead a run-flat tire. The run-flat tire is a small tire compared to a spare tire. This means that if I got a flat tire and used the run-flat tire, I cannot drive normally as the tires will not be balanced and I will be prone to accident if I travel for a long distance. And in case I got accident because of this run-flat tire, I will file a lawsuit for a manufacturer's defects. This GLE 350 was manufactured without taking into consideration that a car should always be DRIVEN WITH ALL FOUR TIRES OF SAME SIZE AT ALL TIMES.

We stumbled upon this 2017 GLE AMG 43 fully loaded with every option except designo interior and B&O sound. The Active Curve is wonderful. Added a RennTech tune to this and it is a rocket that has great acceleration and handling for much less than the AMG 63 sibling...Insurance costs are also less.

I love everything about my GLE-350 from the exterior to the interior. It's a very nice and easy ride with all of the nice safety features from Blind spot assist to Lane departure assist 360°surrounding view camera, and folding side mirrors.

Very elegant car overall. The seat and all the tech features are nice. Only it is a little heavy to drive.

Previous owner(s) had not been faithful in maintenance. The vehicle, once a few maintenance refreshes, is enjoyable.

2017 GLE 350 3.5L V6 engine failed on 22K miles

My 2017 MB GLE 350 3.5L V6 4MATIC engine failed on 22k Miles only – it makes ticking noises and some metal debris were found on oil filter, and the local dealer suggested to replace the engine – in the case the car has been driven normally and oil changes were done on the normal schedules. Since it has passed Mfr warranty we have to pay big money to solve the vital issue, which means we have a big loss on the investment. So the comment is: the car isn’t a reliable one and isn’t a valuable long-time investment for sure. Trying to switch to a more reliable Japanese Brands (e.g. Lexus) soon for a long-term satisfaction and money worth.
