A big car in a small wrapper!

Mercedes somehow squeezed a big car into a small car! This tiny SUV is classified a subcompact, but I'm 6'1 and have plenty of headroom, legroom, and shoulder room front and back. It's high enough that it's easy to get into and out of and to see out of. It's built very solidly, has a peppy but full efficient engine, and 4-matic for Colorado mountains and weather. And the Burmester sound system is just about the finest I've ever heard. The only negative is price, which rises quickly with options. Got mine for $47K and change with 4-matic, panoramic moonroof, premium package, and the Burmester. Feels a little high. But, hey, it's a Mercedes. And it feels like one, albeit in a small package. UPDATE AFTER 6 MONTHS: Still very happy with this car - - manages the mountain roads over Loveland Pass in bad weather, comfy, fun to drive, enough room in the back for ski stuff or german shepherd (but not both). It was this or the GLB and having driven a GLB loaner (while my wife's GL was in for service) I made the right choice, driving dynamics of the GLB totally different - - more like a truck than the GLA which feels like a GTI on the road. My only wish? A 5 speed manual transmission option. Alas, the manual transmission is disappearing.

Much like another reviewer here, we had test driven both the Volvo XC40 and Mazda CX-30 Turbo. While they were both great cars in different ways, they both had major flaws. The Mazda had bland interior options which really only allowed for choosing seat and headliner colors, the infotainment system was frustrating and was only controllable via the dial-interface, the headroom and rear passenger cabin is smaller than a Ford Focus's, the whole car's windows were tiny and hard to see out from. And for a $35k car, the cheap exterior black cladding was and odd choice. And the overall look of the car, in my opinion, is fairly bland. It genuinely looks like a Mazda 3 Turbo with a 3" lift kit. Still the interior looked and felt high-quality, and is a huge step up for Mazda in the CUV market The XC40 was a complete mess. The tire-on-road noise was very poor, the infotainment screen seems to be a cheap knockoff of Tesla's, some interior parts are really nice and some were sourced from Fisher-Price, the door cubbies are lined with bargain-bin RV carpet material, and all of the infotainment controls are buried deep in the sub-menus of the annoying touch screen. Great looking and powerful SUV, but that's about it. While the lower-tier 2021 GLA's lacks some of the features of these other two cars, the interior quality and design is far beyond what they offer. I understand some buyers loath touch-pad controlled infotainment systems, but the Merc's was fairly easy to use. Especially if you're an Android user, the mouse-style controls seem to mirror that of stock Android controls. But if you don't like it, the screen is easily reachable from the driver's seat, and is a touchscreen. The interior design is unique, but not entirely cohesive. I would say the Mazda's interior design is like a new/modern mountainside suburb, and the Merc's design is like those random housing communities near the coast in L.A. I like it, but to each his own. The seats are fairly firm, especially if you opt for the ventilated seats, but their design is fairly comfortable. The headroom will work for anybody under 7' tall, and mostly the same for the rear seats and rear legroom. The exterior looks like Mercedes took their GLC, and used a machine to shrink it by 30%, then added normal size wheels/tires. I personally think the car looks better with the standard 18" wheels than the Fast and Furious 20+ inch options, the base wheels make it look more like an SUV rather than a massive hatchback. It has fair power, and the 8-speet dual-clutch is great for shifting yourself, but can be sluggish in auto-mode in certain situations. Yes, this is far more expensive than other small SUV's made in Asia, especially when you start adding options. If you are considering the 2021 GLA, I'd suggest sitting in and driving your other considerations, then go take the GLA for a spin. The GLA we purchased had an MSRP of $45k, but we were able to knock off around $3k through a common "SuperCostShopperMart" auto-purchasing program included in the membership. The other factor is the auto-industry's poor supply of inventory at the moment, and finding other high-demand small SUV's is either difficult, or equally expensive. It's a decent option, and the base-model GLA's are a decent middle-ground between the economy options, and the spec'd-up versions of the luxury models. Reliability is a long-term question, and we're just not there yet...

Best kept secret in the automotive world

At age 74, I traded my ferocious '19 Z06 Corvette M7 even up for a loaded 2021 GLA 45 AMG. I immediately noticed the comfort and manners of the Mercedes, and decided I could live with a 12.6 1/4 mile instead of the 11.0 1/4 of said Corvette. Of the 17 new cars I've owned, this is the best. Comfort, sportiness, decent fuel economy, utility. And with Race Mode, it launches HARD. I had no issues with the new car, and it hasn't had to go back to the dealer for anything. And no rattles! Solid as a bank vault. Despite getting absolutely no press, I consider this as close to a perfect vehicle as there is, when you consider utility, comfort, efficiency, size, and performance. Is it more expensive? Sure, but it isn't unreasonably so. Have I mentioned that I love it??

Now that I’m older and facing health issues I needed something more suitable than the 63 AMG I had and loved. This is it! Power and handling are almost as good. Comfort is as good or better. MBUX is okay so far. Build quality is exemplary. While I have happily owned SLCs, Corvettes, Carreras and Macans in the past I am perfectly happy in my GLA 45 AMG.

Finally Found The Right Car for Me

What I Was Searching For, 01/18/2021
2021 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class GLA 250 4MATIC 4dr SUV AWD (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 8AM)

I had been searching for an upscale small SUV for much of 2020. In early summer I researched and did 1-2 long test drives with a BMW X1, Volvo XC40, Audi Q3, Lincoln Corsair, and Mazda CX-5 and CX-30. At that time the all new 2021 Mercedes GLA was not yet in US showrooms. None of the luxury brand vehicles available in early summer sold me for the price. The Volvo, Lincoln, and Audi were all lovely inside and feature rich but lost me on the test drive. The BMW had the ride, handling, and powertrain I liked best (and the most straight forward infotainment and nav system to use when driving), but I couldn't find one equipped the way I wanted and was also concerned that that it was nearing the end of its model run and lacked some of the available features of the more recently redesigned competitor vehicles. The Mazda CX-5 was too big for what I wanted, but the Mazda CX-30 came closest to the feel of the BMW X1 at about 35% less MSRP so I bought one in July (you can see my review of it on this site). I had electrical system problems with it and was stranded three times, and was getting nowhere with the Mazda dealer who implied it was somehow my fault. I was frustrated and did not trust it, so I resumed a search in December that brought me to the GLA 250 4matic. I have had the GLA 250 for about six weeks and absolutely love it. Zero issues or criticisms. The powertrain, steering, handling, and ride are exactly what I was looking for in a small, sporty, luxury SUV. I bought one pretty well loaded with most everything except the panoramic sunroof and AMG trim. Infotainment, navigation, and safety tech are all state of the art. The new MBUX interface is easy to use while in motion after a couple hours of study. While the Mazda CX-30 was good value and had a handsome interior, there is undoubtedly more content quality and features in the Mercedes GLA 250 that clearly differentiate the two. The Mercedes dealer experience was probably the best of my life, and I am a senior and have purchased a lot of new cars in my years. I hands down would have bought the 2021 GLA 250 in July had they been available, and I am fortunate that I got a great trade value on my Mazda (only about 10% less than what I paid) that spurred me to proceed to flip it so soon.

I bought a 2023 GLA35, what I thought was my dream car. Boy was I wrong. The experience I have had with the brand new vehicle I bought from Carriage House of New London CT, has been excruciating. 9 month old car has been in their shop for 6 weeks and it took that long for them to figure out the issue. They took that car apart every which way from Sunday and put it back I don’t even know how many times, and now they want me to take the car back and everything is ok? Everything is not ok. I am working with Mercedes USA in an attempt to get my money back because how can a brand new car be in the shop for 6 weeks. Merc USA has the abject worst customer service experience I have ever had. The only good experience I had was buying the thing and that HAD to be good because how else do they get you to buy an overpriced car. The dealership gives you the option to email everyone that works there, so I emailed the owner about my ongoing (I think this qualifies as a lemon) issue, only to be called my the sales guy; I guess I am not worthy of the owners time. Trying to reach my ERM is like pulling teeth and when I was finally assigned one she told me it would take up to 8 weeks to review. So I get to continue to drive this deathtrap till Mercedes as a cooperation feels that I am worthy of any their attention. Never ever ever buy a Mercedes. Ever. Anywhere I can post this review, there it will be. I have got nothing but the runaround from this company. The absolute worst.

Love my AMG GLA 45

I had the 2019 GLA 250 and in 2021 upgraded to the AMG GLA 45. The difference was enormous. This is such a fast car that you really need to be a good driver with lots of experience to handle it responsibly. it’s definitely tempting to speed constantly because the car wants to GO!! No complaints other than I wish the seats were more comfortable. By the time you get all the upgrades you are looking at 70k+. There’s no such thing as a $250 monthly lease unless you put at least 30k down, so who ever came up with the economics on these vehicles hasn’t bought one. But compared to the cost of other AMG’s that go slower but cost twice as much, this is a great value. The way the engine sounds is probably my most favorite aspect of this car. The handling is incredible, brakes are sharp, love the auto high beams and the cascading effect when they turn on. I havnt seen another one of these on the road so I like that it’s rare and I can find it in the parking lot very easily. I actually get 30 miles per gallon on the hwy if I stay in comfort mode and don’t go over 70. Lots of high tech do-dads that actually improve your driving experience. Sticks to the road like Velcro, I added a sub woofer (how can you not) with a powerful amp, tinted the windows really dark, put all weather tires on it, my husband calls it “The Beast!” It definitely is!! Beauty and the Beast

Got this car for my wife about 18 months ago, trading in a BMW X2 Xdrive when she fell in love with it. Pros: Beautiful car; best luxury and beautiful interior in the category out there, nice tech, powerful motor, excellent torque and handling. Cons: Uncomfortable hard seats (compared with my other car, an Acura RDX); transmission jerking and clunkiness particularly at low speeds. Heard this is mostly due to a normal issue with dual clutch transmissions, which I was not accustomed to, and will eventually get used to it. But coming from an expensive luxury car, MB would have done better with it. Hard cheap plastics in door panels and B pillars. Bumpy ride. Very noisy motor, it sounds like an old crappy coffee maker machine. Sound system is not even a joke. The depreciation for this car is a huge disappointment. The BMW X2 did not have this kind of beauty and luxury, but definitively was a way better balanced and performer in the road. Well..... will enjoy it a couple of years more while the value gets near the debt, and will get something else as soon as my wife gets bored with it. Update: after 30 months and only 15k miles on the odometer: 1) wiper and washer motors broke down, 2) the driver seat cheap MBTex ripped itself (no abuse or misuse, we are very careful with our cars), 3) the fuel door does not close. That is with so little use, imagine 3or 4 yrs from now and with warranty expired! No way, The love is over, already traded in and got rid of the thing. The lesson was: if you want a Mercedes, go to Cs and up, do not waste your money with the entry level cheap models.

Turned in my beloved '19 GLA on the 2021 due to space concerns. The Good: ride quality (no longer feel like my joints are being dislocated when hitting a pothole) seat comfort phenomenal MBUX entertainment system (it's really easy to figure out, so don't listen to the haters) MUCH more interior space increased visibility edgy front grill ambient lighting augmented video navigation many high tech features acceleration The Not-So-Good: substandard audio system sound as compared to previous generation (upgrade to the Bermester sound system) gone is the fun, rally racer, almost WRX quality ride - it's now a true compact SUV

I am not impressed by this vehicle. My S clinked on me and I had to buy sthing in a cinch. I wanted a Tesla but decided to stay with Benz for one last try. This car could not have been built in Germany. I know the cheaper models aren’t. This seem like it was made in Detroit at the old Ford factory. Not fast, speakers suck, takes a few to respond. The app sucks as well. Remote start doesn’t respond every time. For what they charge a month it should start whenever I think abt it. Just a poorly made vehicle that they charge Benz price for American quality. Stick with the upper models. Oh, one good thing is it doesn’t cost much to fill up- it ok on gas.

The engine and transmission are as advertised. The car is a little rocket, and the shifting is rocket fast. The combination of economy and speed is hard to beat, I don't know how the Germans do it. Consistently get high 20's combined, and the car is 3.9 0-60. The safety algorithms are not good, the car safety tech supercedes the human input, causing dangerous encounters regularly. The Burmester sound system is top notch. The manufacturing is less quality than expected from Europe, many nagging rattles inside the vehicle, even when brand new.

Where to start? Waited six months for delivery and was crazy excited when it arrived. Fully loaded with just about every option. After a week I despise the car. Turbo lag when you first accelerate...the $840 Burmester audio system is totally underwhelming...the Augmented Reality Navigation impresses friends but is distracting due to having to repeatedly take your eyes off the road to look at it...the MBUX is complicated. If I could return it I would in a heartbeat.

2022 GLA 250 models were manufactured during the 'chip crisis' and are without power seats. You get a $700 credit to make up for manual seats that are only found on the most budget of rental Hyundai's. Funny how dealers don't seem to mention that and that fact is never listed on a dealer website. Even on the original MSRP sticker. Stay away from 2022 or you'll end up with a luxury Hyundai

If you want a SUV that is safe elegant as well as fast from the word go. This is your machine... When getting on the highway an ever so slightly pressing of the gas pedal sends that vehicle over 80 before you actually get off the on ramp. Be careful too much will send that turbocharged 4 cylinder fully loaded over a 100 and it won't feel like you're going that fast until you look down at the speedometer and see the blue lights in your rearview mirror... That 4 cylinder makes her easy on gas 32mpg around town 36/37 on the highway. My own calculations 75 with cruise control. The 2021 is also more roomy than the 2018... It is very comfortable for anyone over six feet tall front and back especially good for long trips... It has every safety feature from four front air bags to blind spot warning both lights and sound.... Your phone play list can be easily accessible... For the guys sorry ladies it has a female voice commands you have to merely ask Mercedes to change radio stations connect blue tooth or make a phone call and she complies in a female voice which immediately gets your attention by asking you how may she help you... Wow...

2023 GLA 250 Pros/Cons according to me

Pros *vehicle has a nice pickup for a small suv *love the style and look of the 2023 GLA 250 *price was really good for a small luxury suv *very roomy inside Cons *have to use premium gas which is expensive *no maintenance warranty on new vehicle *small gas tank *premium pkg does not have auto on/off headlight switch. Have to do it manually *stereo system is not the greatest for a luxury suv Before buying the Benz I test drove a Lexus nx 350 suv and it was surprisingly so tight inside that it was not a good fit for my family. I also drove an Audi Q5 which was nice but I wanted a smaller suv. I have owned my 2023 GLA 250 for 5 months and I love it so far even with the cons. It’s fun to drive and I feel good driving it. Fingers crossed that will continue for years to come 🤞🏼

The GLA250 AMG35 is quick and FUN!

I loved my 2019 GLA, but wanted more speed. The GLA 35 gives me that. The new body style, interior, and technology are impressive. The AMG grill is fierce, as are the 21 inch wheels. The pick up and handling are smooth, but also exciting. The leather interior is beautiful, the seats are comfortable, and the heated and cooled seats are great! Getting in and out of the seats is easier than the 2019, which helps with a bad knee. I still do love my puddle lights! The large center console has a split opening which is much nicer than the single door. Even the glove box is improved. The new technology (touch screens, display, and ambient lighting) are beautiful, and are not too tall, as I’ve seen in other makes. I am still learning the touch pad and menus, but they seem to make sense. One thing I miss is my sunglasses holder! Overall, I am enjoying this vehicle immensely!

This vehicle will surprise you it handles like a car and if you're standing in front of it looks like a SUV she's really Thrifty on gas on the highway I get between 38 and 41 Mi to the gallon on the street 29 to 33 miles to the gallon the first one is at the speed limit the seats are very comfortable I could drive longer because of the lumbar setup for the front seats not to mention all the safety features when she finds you getting tired she tells you to take a break she's like a good wife need I say more

I will say that Mercedes-Benz motorcars convey a distinction of character and quality such as no other. Appreciating a special experience driving my 2021 GLA 4Matic SUV and the interpretation of Mercedes Class structures while understanding the timeless heritage ingrained within the build, engineering, and impeccable materials. The integrity that silently secures the confidence and performance of these superb automobiles. A free-spirited model that may be a smaller Mercedes-Benz yet is all that the three-pointed star delivers. Swift agility, Refined integrity, Intuitive cockpit, a body crafted to behold with grace and beauty amid the banal-cloned motoring culture. Never ordinary and always a Mercedes-Benz.

Why buy a more expensive Mercedes when you can get this vehicle with panoramic roof , heated seats , upgrade sound system , satellite radio , heated seats , premium package and rear adjustable seats for under $40,000 . Sounds like a great price for a fully loaded Mercedes Benz , of course this is after you get a discount which you can get significant one if you know what your doing

Owned several Mercedes since 2008. Had a 2023 GLA250 as a loaner for a couple days. It's....fine. Much bigger than my GLA45. Feels as big as a GLC; not sure how close they are in size but it's absolutely bigger than the earlier version of the GLA. There's absolutely nothing wrong with it. The interior is several steps up from the previous versions. Lots of screens to fiddle with. Lots of "tech.' I'm not sure that it would be my pick at the $40k price. Just seems like there would be better options. Again...not bashing the car at all, but it's absolutely nothing special

The GLA 250 is an absolutely amazing car. So many unexpected features especially the safety features. My daughter loves it.

Car has Night Package and AMG styling. Red upholstery stitching and WeatherTec floor protectors. All the bells and whistles one might want with AWD and quick response.

I love this car ..it is beautiful and elegant. The ride is smooth, easy to handle and the interior is classy. In fact, I was surprised to find that the price for the Mercedes GLA 250 was in the ballpark of less luxurious cars like Honda CRV.

I bought a 2018 gla250 on a whim and I enjoyed it tremendously, at 53k I decided to replace my 18 with a 21 gla250 and I have to say as good as the 18 was this 21 is light years ahead in every aspect. The engine is way faster 8 speed transmission not 7 engine stays in the power band all the way up to 110. The interior is absolutely gorgeous and I love the light show from the indirect lighting. I read all the comments from the haters in here and I have to laugh. This is fine car no matter what name is on the front I say enjoy your ride and stop with the hate. I’m
