Well Balanced Luxury SUV

I bought a used CPO 2018 GLA 250 AWD. I had a new Hyundai Kona which I mostly loved but wanted more luxury. I use the GLA for work at 600-800 miles per week for sales work and just finished a 5025 mile road trip to Florida. For the road trip my mileage was 30.5mpg and never varied much. For work I get 28 mpg which is about 2/3rds hwy. The main positives are it is quick well modulated acceleration, effective distinct drive modes to choose from, good gas efficiency and the ride is nearly perfect to me. It’s not super stiff like many sporty cars are and the sound insulation is good for a vehicle this size and price. I like little things like the automatic rear lift gate and keyless touch entry. I feel the seat space both front and back is good. I took my parents out to eat and my stepmom says she usually hates back seats but was comfortable in the GLA. I recommend you get one with blind spot monitor as the side mirrors leave a large blind spot. I also recommend the Apple Car Play which is indispensable to me. I also enjoy the lower roof line for easily throwing kayaks and paddle boards on top. I got mine without the panorama sun roof which makes the ceiling higher and the ride quieter. Last, the A/C cools the car super quick and heat works great, as well. I recommend the all-weather matts if you live in a place like Colorado. The negatives: The USB ports are in the center console which is idiotic to me. There are no recesses to let the cords hang out so you sort of crush the cords over time. Silly error. There are no USB ports in the rear, either. To get all the tech you have to buy several different packages. I also found the front seats to be a bit uncomfortable on the long road trips. I am thinking of getting a gel pad. The rear storage is not great but I rarely need much and for this subcompact size I’d rate it neutral. The final negative for me has been MB dealerships who make maintenance costs extremely high. I just paid $933.00 for a B (even year) service. Another dealer charged $550 and an independent was just $359.00. Just watch out and don’t take the salesman’s word (I asked when I bought the car). The car also runs on premium but is offset with good mileage. Insurance is a bit higher than others, too. In summary, I love the car for comfort, performance and appearance. I am not as jazzed about cost of operation nor Mercedes dealerships who seem to take every opportunity to empty your wallet. However, I do not factor that in to my rating for the car itself which is a nicely engineered piece of work.

Overall a very nice ride.

Performance was less than I expected. Mercedes should increase the horsepower from 208hp to at least 250hp on this vehicle. The same 4 cyl turbo engine in the MB 300 series is rated at 240 hp. I had to bring the car to a performance tuning service to have the ECU reprogrammed to about 270 hp to get the performance I expect from Mercedes. At the 270 hp level the performance is what I expected. The other problem is the Android Auto would not connect with my Samsung S7 phone. The dealer uploaded the latest MB software and it still would not connect. My S7 was able to connect with other 2018 MB vehicles, so it was not my phone or cable. I finally gave up and had to buy a new S10e phone for almost $800 to be able to use Android Auto.

Loving my GLA 250 4MATIC

I recently purchased my 2018 GLA 4MATIC after having a hard top Miata for a few years. I LOVED my Miata but it was time for a more luxurious ride. I first looked at the Volvo XC40 and while I really liked the car, there was a huge blind spot and none of the dealers within a 100 mile radius had any in stock and I would have to order one and wait until the new year for it to arrive. No instant gratification there! Then I started to consider the GLA, the Audi Q3 and the BMW 1 & 3. I test drove the GLA and really liked it but thought I'd look at the other brands before purchasing. The Audi didn't have Apple Car Play and that was a deal breaker. And I have never liked BMWs (I know I'm weird) so after looking at them in Palo Alto, I crossed them off my list without a test drive. (I sat in both the 1 & 3 and didn't like the interior on either - both felt cheap and cramped.) I decided on the GLA 250 4MATIC and I've had it for a month. I really like the way it drives and handles. I like a car to go and pick up quickly, so I was concerned it wouldn't be zippy enough, but that isn't an issue. The front is very comfy and I love the support the seats offer as well as the layout. The tech systems was very easy and intuitive and I'm not a techie so I was worried about that, but again, not an issue. I'm short and the head room isn't the greatest but I have the first seat position button set to very low and the second button set to where I drive, so entering and exiting isn't an issue. The back seat is small and I wouldn't want to sit there, but I don't have to, and I rarely have passengers in the back. As for the cargo space, don't buy this car if you're looking to haul big or large items - it's not built or meant for that. I love this car and it fits my lifestyle perfectly - beautiful exterior and interior, great ride, great pick up, and I think it handles great. Also, the dealer experience at MB surpassed all the others except Audi - they were very good as well. Bottom line, I'd totally buy this car again.

First Merc - wanting a small sporty luxury SUV

The styling of the GLA-250 caught my attention, absolutely loved it. I was in the market for a small sporty luxury SUV and was looking to trade in my 05 Infinity FX35. First time leaser, and wanting to keep the monthly cost as low as possible, it was between the GLA and the new Infinity GX30. Several competitors didn't make the shortlist: BMW X1 looks like a cheap/inferior BMW. Lexus NX styling is bizarre. Land Rover Evoque looks like an elephant sat on it and is super expensive. Audi Q3 was close to the shortlist but didn't have time to fully research. Lincoln MKC is American, say no more. I researched, test drove and received quotes for the GLA and Infinity, which are essentially the same platform. The GLA (just) won every category on my comparison checklist, and the dealership experience was much 'classier' and less 'salesy'. And after a couple of rounds of negotiation I was presented an unbelievable 3 year / 12,000 mpy lease for under $300/month, including service costs. Absolutely love the deal, the car and the buying experience.

I love the way this car looks, I think it’s really the prettiest car on the road. Mine is midnight blue with white leather interior and it makes me smile every time I see it! I paid way more than the regular MSRP, I probably should have bargained a bit on the price but I was so excited about the car I didn’t bother. It has all the bells and whistles, very fun car and I feel incredibly safe in this thing. I feel like it knows when I want to turn, the handelling is almost intuitive it’s so smooth. It feels like it floats instead of drives and I would say it is way quieter than any car I have ever driven aside from a Prius. It took me a while to get used to the shifter, I kept using this instrument to signal instead of shift. Of course nothing happens when I do that, it’s all safe, just frustrating to get used to a shifter like this. It does have a few dash board rattles occasionally, not great for a car this expensive. But it’s usually only on rough pavement. It’s a lot smaller than it looks on the inside. Coming from driving a true mid sized suv this feels like a sedan. I leased it in case I would feel it’s too small for my daily needs, but really my only complaint is that I may want to get the AMG as I love speed and though this car is faster than any other 4 cycle coming from my previous car that was 264 hp this feels slow. Sport mode definitely helps a lot though and when I’m not feeling thrifty about gas consumption this definitely gives it a big boost!! My butt gets a little numb on long drives so I bought a gel cushion and that is definitely the way to go! Over all I give it 4 stars. For five it would need to be a little bigger (more head room), a little faster, and more padding on the seats. Everything else is pretty great, I’m very happy with it.
