First hybrid, fascinated with the technology

I was not in the market for a car and certainly not a hybrid but a good friend of mine took a job out of state and his wife needed to get rid of her car; enter the 2010 Lexus HS250h. She was willing to sell the car below trade-in, the car has just over 93,000 miles, is in nearly mint condition, is current on all recalls and the new transaxle system was installed 2 months ago, all service has been performed at our local Lexus dealership. I’ve only owned the car about 2 weeks and so far so good. I’ve done a lot of research to learn as much as I can about hybrid vehicles and in particular this Lexus HS. I’ve read just about every review written since it’s release, some I agree with and some I don’t. The car I have has the premium package with more bells and whistles than I can figure out, it handles fine around town and is plenty quite and smooth for me. If your looking for a performance sports car this is not going to fit the bill, if your looking for s gas sipping luxury auto to cruise around town in it’s the ticket. Would I pay $40,000 for this car for any reason? Hell no! Would I buy one in great condition with less than 100k miles with a new transaxle system for less than $10,000, yes.

At first when I bought this thing I hated it,coming from a Lexus GS 350. The power was comparatively anemic and the understeer, forget about it. However after a few weeks I adapted to the understeer and was able to make the car work for me. In fact I've adapted to this car so well that a I've actually hadd a few passengers tell me that the car felt rather sporty. The HS 250 certainly has some advantages over a long wheelbase V-6 like the GS 350 its a more compact car so it has a much tighter turning radius. Front wheel drive steering isn't as sharp as rear wheel drive but it allows the driver to be a little lazier in high speed turns, you simply wait for the car to be ready.

I owned this car for 3 years and it's been the most reliable car I ever owned. Gas mileage has been excellent I average 28 to 33 mpg in the winter and 33-38 mpg in the summer. The only thing I had to replace was the 12v battery in the trunk in 3 years! Brakes are still really well and last a long time. Maintenance costs have been really low just changed the fluids, oil changes, inverter coolant, coolant and transmission fluid. These cars are rare and worth every penny. I also have the Mark Levinson sound system and still sounds awesome. The only thing is these engines have a oil consumption issue as it shares the same powertrain as the 2007-11 Toyota Camry Hybrid and some of them burn oil due to faulty piston rings but mainly in the higher mileage ones, mine has 160,000 miles and nothing different. My suggestion is too change the oil more frequently at 3000 miles instead of 5000 and shouldn't be a issue. Excellent car overall, highly recommend

I traded an 06 Acura RL which I adored but got in the low 20's mpgs and was looking for a good size tech laden high mileage car. I never fancied myself a "Lexus" guy but after test driving it, felt it had excellent "non Lexus" driving characteristics and incredible mileage for a 3700 pound luxo/sport (albeit for a hybrid) car. And with the December to Remember cash incentives from mother Lexus, the price became "reasonable." Have had the car since Jan 3 and have 4500 miles on it and am consistently getting high 36 mpg's. And with gas up $0.60 cents since January its been a big help! Also have two Prius's and this HS is no Prius! Prius is great but no comparison for a long drive.

Absolutely love this Lexus. Super smooth drive. I upgraded from a Prius to this, and it is well worth loosing a little mpg. LOVE the cooled seats and all of the extras on it. Bought it used with 100k miles, and have put 40k on it. Still runs like new!

When we felt we deserved a lot more bells and whistles and were watching the fuel prices start the most recent climb we researched the available Luxury Hybrids. Kathy wanted a higher seating position than the '99 Solara, BlueTooth/Nav/Heated Seats and she found it all. My working for a Lexus store didn't stop her from looking at the Prius, Altima and Lincoln Hybrids but she determined that the Premium HS suited her best. Now that she regularly exceeds the posted 35 MPG by 2 or 3 it confirmed her decision. A high point of her day is getting asked for a ride by various co-workers and showing off the cooled seats and verbal commands. That the dealer washes it every week is an added bonus!

I've had my Lexus HS250h for a year now. 23k miles. Getting 38 MPG! Very comfortable! I'm 5'2" so I'm grateful to find a car that "fits". Interior and exterior are wearing well. Performance has been fine. If you're looking for a sports car acceleration experience, this isn't it - it is a nice, hybrid ride though. Has enough pep to get you out of trouble if you need it (and you can always use the power mode). Brakes well and handles well. Very quiet. No problem to date. Great pick! Very happy!

Went to buy a Prius, wife said no way would not drive an egg. We've had the car for about 9 months, bought used (demo) with 18k miles. Have about 28k miles. Very nice car, but the into gas miles are not close to want Lexus states. On flat surface drive it might get 30 to 31 miles. With slight hills in area around 25 mpg. On the freeway at 60-62 mph will get over 40 mpg!! But bought the car mainly for in town driving. Wife does not like to drive because she can't see front end because of the way the hood is shaped :]. I have no problem. Seats a a little narrow for those of us over 230 lbs.

When I purchased this car in February, I was getting 37mpg. I live the Chicago area and with the winter cold, it has dropped to less then 30. I took it to the dealer who said it was normal due to the engine running more for the emissions. Seems like too big of a drop to me. the car itself is fun to drive, handles well, although the grunt of the engine turning on does seem to be a little underpowered. Trunk space is diminished due to the batteries and the stereo is not what I consider top of the line for a Lexus, particulalry in the back seat. I also wish there was a wee bit more headroom in the front and the center console does intrude.

I bought this for its hybrid drive and it's beautiful interior. The leather and wood panelling , though artificial, is very appealing. The size of the cabin is spacious compared to most cars of its exterior size. Getting inside an LS 250, by contrast, feels positively claustrophobic. This is a very important and attractive feature. Fuel economy is 30.5 to 32.5 mi/gal in mostly highway driving. I had to replace an air conditioner fan, but everything else has been flawless mechanically. Compared to Lexus LS series cars it is not as smooth riding nor as quiet--even after adding $900 of soundproofing. (That was a waste. I don't recommend it.). This is a mild disappointment. Acceleration is quite good. I did not give it higher marks due to a one to two second hesitation when accelerating to pass. I love the continuously variable transmission. I can play MP3's using a memory stick. This is good, but one cannot reliably or easily navigate to to the song desired due to the balky interface. The rest of the radio/CD interface is fine. The sound quality is good but not great. I added a subwoofer, and that made it great. It is the regular premium sound not the Mark Levinson. Interior comfort is quite good. I can go long periods of road driving with no back strain. It needs more storage space, however.

I'm impressed by this Lexus Hybrid, get close to 40MPG, can use regular unleaded fuel, fully loaded with awesome technology found previously in a LS600. It is pricey almost $50K but for the mileage and contributions to the environment, I'm pleased with it. Nice comfortable interior and yes, the brakes does get some getting used to. The navigation is easy to use, head up display on windshield is helpful and the front angled camera has saved me many times. Not to mention the lane keep assist for those late nights in the office when you are tired, it can save you from an accident and tickets. Awesome car and I recommend it.

I went from a Mercedes S500 to this car and I love the difference. The HS has a nicer ride and the difference is gas mileage is great. I paid about $90,000 for the Mercedes and about $42,500 for the Lexus and I actually am happier driving the Lexus. The HS has almost all of the luxury features my S500 did with the exception of a little more room and an electric trunk which isn't a big deal. I would recommend this car to anyone looking for a hybrid vehicle and even to anyone who is looking for a luxury vehicle. I've had Mercedes and BMW's before and nothing compares to the quality of Lexus.

I had a Camry Hybrid Special 50th Anniversary Edition, which had a lot of luxury and high tech features. This Lexus has all that but in a better designed package and it's more fun to drive. It feels more "European", tighter and more solid than the Camry, better handling, brakes and a zippier response and torque. The console is a triumph of ergonomic design and aesthetics. It has more trunk space than the Camry, and a better, stiffer suspension. So far, I'm very satisfied with it and also saving money because of the special December deals at Lexus!

I was looking for an Infinite buy this Lexus caught my eye. I glad I did decide to get the HS 250, best buy of a car since my 2000 Grand Marquis. The ride is really smooth, the sound system could be better, and since it's a hybrid I see the gas savings. Filled it up Sunday, and it's Thursday and not even a quart tank yet. Get about 34 city 39 highway, a real plus. Could have gotten a Prius, but this 250 is so luxurious and I get so many compliments that it's worth the price.

I have owned the HS for two weeks now. I enjoy the quality of the car. I ordered the base model instead of the premium model. The leather seats are not perforated and tend get you hot. The seats are perforated and would keep you cooler. The base model also does not have the ability to retain the seat position, if you have more than one drive you may need this. If I had to do it again I would purchase the premium model. There is virtually no storage the large manual takes up 75% of the glove compartment and the middle console is extremely small. It may sound like I have a lot of complaints but the car is the best car I've owned. Love the drive, interior most everything. Getting 35+ city/Hiway.

I have only 1000 miles on it and I'm getting 37 - a lot better than my 9 yr old Camry V6 (25 mpg) which I traded in. I'm very technical and I observe all the activities happening very minutely. In short, this is the car of future, this car will not have been possible 10 years ago without the advancement in computers. I now realize, its a paradigm shift in automotive transmission technology. Even when its just rolling, which I can see from the engine display monitor, it can go more distance than any other cars I've driven. When braking, generate power and reuse that later. When going through busy areas, use most of the battery power (that's when gas engines burn most fuel).

Yes, 37,000 for a car that does not possibly "perform" like a luxury car sedan can be a bit strange. BUT, listen, you're just not going to get excellent fuel economy in a car that has a sportscar like drive. I guess the BMW 3series is the gold standard in this class for the car that's a fun driving experience and I guess it is. BUT, try driving in a "fun" way in that and appreciate your 20mpg and exhaust that is not as ecofriendly as it can be. This car is one of only about 14 to receive the EPA highest rating for environmental impact. Car drives pretty good, handling is great. Quiet drive, but does have some weird winding noise when breaking -- you get used to it.

Purchased this car CPO after one too many bad experiences with my beloved 2007 BMW X5 4.8i. Repairs too expensive for my college student budget. I know I'm comparing apples to oranges here, however, in everything that this car intends to do, it exceeds my expectations for it. While smaller than the TCH, it's shared powertrain move this car pretty decently. Electric/gas transition is very seamless. Well put together all around, and after driving around Naperville, IL for two weeks, I have averaged 40.2 and 41.6 MPG on the last two tanks respectively. After reviews on here, was hoping to get 30. Overall, a very good value for a used car as they are discontinued (unfortunately!).

We went to Reliable Lexus in Springfield MO to find a replacement car for our old 2005 lexus 300. We have become older and no longer have the buying power we once have but found a 2010 250HS Lexus that turned out to be the most amazing car we have ever had and so was the deal we got with it. We had the payments on every two weeks, the car was still Lexus certified and they even give us a special deal that allowed us to bring the car in for a once amonth car wash free. The warranty covered twice a year coating for the paint, the car had brand new Michelin tires, and oil changes. Plus all the other things warrenties have, The people at Reliable Lexus in Springfield, MO were outstanding, Unfortunately the car was totaled out when another vehilce pulled out in front of my wife just 7 months after purchasing it. We cound not find another like it and had to settle for a lesser car with less of a warranty.

I upgraded from the Camry Hybrid. This car drives MUCH better. You can really feel the difference in the power (even without using the power button) I get better gas mileage in middle speed (40 - 60). That was always an issue in the Camry. One frustration is the fuel tank is 3 gallons smaller so I have to fill-up every 6 days instead of 8. I am getting the same mileage overall as the Camry Hybrid. The luxury features on this car put the Toyota to shame and you get what you pay for! But increasing the lease payment by not that much moved me from Spartan Hybrid to Luxury Hybrid and that is the best decision I ever made.

We got this to replace our IS 250 AWD. Seat comfort is wonderful as is the ride. Rear seating is entirely adequate for a smallish car. Trunk holds golf clubs and luggage and is adequate. Features associated with the NAV system just make the car a joy to be in. Very good visibility inside. Acceleration is adequate and even generates a bit of torque steer. The car is pretty cool looking and, in other words, a hybrid that satisfies someone who enjoys a nice car with a lot of features.

I've owned mine now for about 3 weeks. I came from a 2010 Prius which was too low to the ground for my back problems. Ironically, the dimensions are almost identical but for some reason, the HS seats are higher and the car is easier to get in and out of. I also owned a Camry Hybrid for about 4 months. Hated it. The gas mileage was terrible, the quality was awful and the door sill was low and I frequently bumped my head getting in and out. (I'm 5'10") I don't have any of those problems with the HS. As for luxury and quality and ride - TOP NOTCH! Made in Japan. Camry, Made in Kentucky....(I think) My biggest complaint is lack of storage space up front and the engine whine when braking.

I purchased my Prem HS 250h with navigation, backup camera and rear spoiler in APR 2010 and got the 1.9% APR special. (Starfire ext/Black int). I found that I was not able to get the 35/34 MPG from the 1st tank of fuel. From the 2nd and 3rd, it just gets better and better. I am now on my 3rd and getting 36.7 in 50% city/50% hwy driving. The navi menus take some getting used to as well as the predictive text for voice command. Destination Assist and Lexus Enform is really handy (which I thought I would not use). One thing that is a little irritating is that some menu choices in the navi menus are not available once the car begins to move. As soon as you stop, they are workable. Safety issue? :)

There is no other car like this on the market. I drove both Toyota hybrids and the Ford Fusion and they simply are not in the same league in terms of either performance or comfort. It is obviously more expensive, but in this case you get what you pay for; you don't even have to drive them, you can just sit in them--though driving will further substantiate the differences. If you want a diesel, get a diesel; the A3 and 335d are different cars that meet different needs and expectations; I live in an area where many of their advantages are mitigated by traffic. This is the paradigm of the car of the next 5 years.

Ever since I’ve been driving the Lexus HS250h I never had any issues with it. Its performances and reliability is off the chart, an amazing car to drive Even though it’s an hybrid and you save tons of gas but runs like a V6 engine. Only concern I have is how the Edmunds website appraisal estimates the trade in amount so Low and I’m perplexed with that decision, the need to do better.

I am getting over 40 mpg in combined city/highway driving. The seats are very comfortable. The acceleration is fine. I purchased the car for $2000 below the sticker price. I am thrilled with this car!

Great Value for a Hybrid

Going into third month driving what I believe is the best value hybrid on the market. I have the base model, with driving split between city and highway. It excels in city driving, and, once up to speed on the highway, is terrific, with a very comfortable ride. The "PWR MODE" works well in getting up to speed on the highway. This car should be compared to other hybrids or cars which deliver good gas mileage; not against performance cars (although the HS is no slouch in that area). Comparing the quality and the features which come with the HS, it is easily the best of the new breed of energy efficient vehicles.

Luxury Hybrid that actually saves fuel

Unlike some of its Lexus Hybrid siblings, the HS is actually saving fuel. Regular gas and 31MPG in luxury automobile is fantastic. The car drives well and has surprising get-up when mashing the pedal - perhaps a reason for my "low" MPGs. The look is quite and classy but with enough there to make you go hum? Think a Talbot suit with Victoria Secret undergarments.

I now have 600 miles on my 2010 Lexus HS250h and am very happy with it. After test driving the Ford Fusion hybrid and the Camry hybrid, this one won out on so many fronts. Comfortable seats, stylish, power when needed in power mode. It has all the power and luxury of a fine car while also fuel efficient. It's a genuine pleasure to drive and continues to teach me to be a better driver. MPG ranges between 35- 37 in terrain that varies from flat to very hilly. This is the first Lexus I've owned and I am completely satisfied with every aspect of this car.

I have had my new wheels for almost a week and really like this car. I am a first time Lexus owner and so far i have been blown away by the service. I am getting an avg of 35mpg on my first tank of gas with equal city/highway driving. I have not been disappointed with power to get on the highway etc... The destination assist has already proven useful when traveling on the road. If you are looking for something upscale, green and cool then look no more!

I upgraded from a Convertible to buy the HS250. I was pleasantly surprised with the technology inside. I think the Navigation could be better. My biggest qualm is that there isn't much mpg esp for city miles. For the price I got with the low mileage was a plus for me

I've had my HS250h for almost a month and just love this car. Reviews likening it to a "Prius with a trunk", suggesting you'd be better of with a Camry or other negative comparisons just demonstrate ignorance. They clearly haven't driven the HS, the Prius, the Camry, or any of the above. The ride, comfort, fit and finish, technology and overall driving experience are outstanding. I went with the full tech package and have found many of these features to be incredibly helpful and contribute to an overall sense of safety when driving. They are not just bells and whistles! Cabin noise is very low, and I am getting the advertised 35-36 MPG around town and closer to 38 on the road.

This is our third Lexus, and with 900 miles on this one, could not be more satisfied. Car is quite, comfortable, and solid. I am averaging 35 mpg, and I like the fact we can use regular gas. The Lexus navigation and Lexus Connect is well worth the money. Call Lexus Connect in the car, ask for any destination and they will send the address directly to your GPS.

I bought my HS250h after months of deciding what vehicle I want to be in for the next few yoers-this is THE ONE. I came out of a BMW330Xi which was by far THE WORST vehicle I have ever owned. Lousy ride on RF scooter tires, AC NEVER WORKED for 4 years and 14 visits to the dealer under "Free Maintenance." Anyway, this vehicle is superbly engineered and the interior is superbly executed, performances is perfectly balances between lux and econo. It got mostly bad reviews which proves the bias to anything German made.even if they are overpriced and underperforming. the Lexus badge more prestige and cachet as the star and the propeller in my book. Great car. this is also my 2nd Lexus (RX/2004)

Getting 40.7 for first 7,000 miles. The large display with the very functional mouse is a hoot. Get my stock updates, team scores, etc. Love this car. It certainly is not a slow car and is very capable on the long road.

This is my 4th Lexus. Traded in 07 Acura MDX 14-16mpg city so 35mpg is welcomed. Car handles well and has a smooth ride. The controls on the steering wheel column are not illuminated, nor are the garage open/close buttons on the rear view mirror...it's the little things! The tech package is fun to use. Storage is a problem. With all the manuals in the glove box there's not much room for anything else. Center console box is very small. Steering wheel feels cheap. Fit and finish is what to expect from Lexus. Navi system is easy to use as is Bluetooth. The map screen & the audio info will not display @ the same time, ie: station and song info, etc.. it's the little things.

For those looking for a luxury hybrid, this is a great car. It has all the features you could want and then some. The interior is beautiful and very comfortable and spacious. It does not have the impressive fuel efficiency of a Prius, but I'm willing to "settle" for the 35mpg for quite a bit more power with this hybrid. It is easy to drive on the freeway, quiet and smooth. Overall a great car.

It is extremely comfortable, and I especially like to air conditioned seats and the entire AC system in general as I live in Florida. The car is quiet although having had a BMW previously I would not call it Fun to Drive. I am getting between 37 and 39 MPG have had no problems to date, and feel I made an excellent purchase. Car is roomy, well appointed and receives numerous favorable comments. Try it I think you'll like it.

Somehow, early reviews of this car were negative, and the mean girls piled on. Those who own the car have a different opinion. I bought my 2010 HS250h in 2016. The last 7 years and 80,000 miles have been trouble free. The car is quiet on the highway, and very comfortable to drive. I have saved $thousands in gas compared to my old car (38 avg mpg summer; 33 avg mpg winter). It's fun to drive. I would prefer if it turned a little tighter when squeezing into a tight spot or doing a U-turn. Some cars have better visibility out the front. That said, I feel safe in this car and enjoy taking long trips in it.

My first new car was a 1959 Chevy. What a ride in the last 50 years to a Lexus Hybrid. Can you imagine a 72 year old woman with a spoiler? I have never had a car I was this excited about. It is a dream to drive and handles easily. I am excited about saving fuel costs since I went from a 2005 Lexus 330 using premium fuel to this gem. I, too, miss the cubby storage and trunk area in had in my 330, but I have pared down on what I carry, and that is a good thing. I would highly recommend this car to anyone!!!

I have been a long time BMW fan (2 decades) and have recently picked up my new Lexus Hybrid. First off, I was very impressed with the Lexus service - from basic research, answering my questions, responsiveness, comfortable not overly aggressive sales people. The new hybrid drives very smooth, quiet and I love the interior design. I have much more room, storage space than the BMW 325i. The gas mileage has been great so far. I'm happy to have chosen the Lexus over the other hybrids (like the Altima).

Hats off to the design and engineering teams at Lexus. After a little over two weeks of driving this amazing hybrid,I'm impressed with what appears to be a winning combination of luxury, technology, comfort, and handling. With 4 driving modes, all of which work flawlessly, this car is a "lot of fun" to drive. I'm getting about 35 mpg which is the expected and welcome result. I think, with a little more practice, I'll be able to improve that to about 38-40mpg. The remote touch controller for the nav system is a wonder. It manages a very intuitive and simple interface with the audio, nav, climate, and phone systems thus enhancing the overall enjoyment of driving this well executed automobile.

This is my first Lexus. Generally, I'm very happy with the HS250. The car is comfortable, handles well and is a delight to drive. I love all the gadgets! Fortunately, the Lane Keep Assist alerts me if I spend more time on the accessories than concentrating on driving. Gas mileage has been exceptional! Highway driving is consistently in the area of 42-45 MPH. City driving falls to the mid 30s. Unfortunately, the car is a bit noisy on some roads and during rapid acceleration. Also, the cabin lacks storage "cubbies" and convenient cup holders. All considered, I'm glad I bought the HS250 and feel comfortable in recommending it to others.

Nice car, like it. But mpg is not what I had hoped for. I owned a Camry hybrid for last 3 and average was 39mpg for the 75k miles. So, I know what to expect from this hybrid with the same horsepower, gas and electric and the torque. EPA rated slightly better than Camry but working to get 34 mpg...not good enough for a light footed conservationist??? All else is well but would like a few more storage cubbies tucked into the car.
