Commander is great truck
Just purchased this vehicle a couple of weeks ago and highly recommend it. The interior comfort is wonderful and the saddle brown seats look very expensive. Truck handles great and is extremely agile for a 5,000 lb. vehicle. The limited model offers a lot of goodies standard. Even though the truck is fairly new I got a decent discount when purchasing. All in all a great truck and would highly recommend.
Awesome, especially for the money!
We just picked up our Jeep on 3/25. The loaded up base V6 is fine, but the Limited creature comforts are nice and it's not that much more money. We shopped vs used LR3's and GX470's - both nice as well. However, when you take into account the 0% financing and that fact you are getting "new styling" that won't be outdated soon, it makes it very affordable vs other competitive used $30-35K SUV's. It looks sharp and it's very comfortable - and quiet! Don't believe dealers who won't discount with the 0%. We got it well below invoice with the 0%. MPG is a drawback, but we really like it overall.

I want another one
This Jeep is awesome. It drives and handles like a luxury car, and not a truck. I love the stares I get when people watch me drive by. Jeep has truly outdone themselves with this hip new stylish SUV hybrid Jeep. My only concern is the gas mileage or lack thereof. I average 15 mpg back and forth to work, but dang. Did I say this truck is awesome?
Problems
We have had to take our Commander back for the following reasons; 1. Check Engine light....a hose had a split in it with only 1000 miles on it. 2. We had a loud whistle coming from the dash area; it was a bad seal on the windshield. 500 miles on it. 3. We are now having a problem with the passenger window not going up and down correctly...stops half way up and goes back down unless you keep your finger on the switch. 4. We have a slight dimple in the door protruding out from the metal. Dealer says they can fix it but may not be able to match up paint..
Very Disappointing
We had an ongoing issue with the engine stalling out. All 4 brake routers warped in the first 18 months. Needed a full brake job with 14,000 miles on it. Nothing was covered. Many electronic items have quirks; seat memory, outside temp, and others. Have replaced the windshield 3 times in 26 months for cracks from road stones. It seems to catch them all.
Windshield noise & engine quits
Has been at the dealer 5 times for wind noise coming thru the windshield at high speeds. Applying for the Lemon Law to have Jeep replace the vehicle. Motor has cut off several times, taken to the dealer twice.
Really Impressed
Looked at just about everything else in its class. The Commander just seemed like the best deal at the time. So far I am really impressed with the Hemi. H3 and BMW and Lexus had nowhere near the options that our Limited came with at even a $12K difference. We are truly in love with the versatility and comfort.
Third Jeep
The Jeep Commander is my third Jeep SUV. I started with the boxy Cherokee followed by a Grand Cherokee and now the Commander. The styling of the Commander reminds me of my first Cherokee which is simple yet very retro. The performance has been great, the ride is excellent, and the features inside are very user friendly. I went with the 6 cylinder to help me with the gas mileage and it is just enough power to haul my family around.
new Commander
Just purchased this vehicle a week ago. Best car for my money so far. Roomy enough for my family with 2 car seats for the kids.
First Jeep
Wow, This is our first Jeep and compared to other SUV styles for size and price the Commander won hands down. We were looking for a car for my wife to haul kids and groceries. It took us several months and drove a lot of cars before deciding on this SUV. After a test-drive my wife and I really loved the car. We both knew this was "the" car. This car is just right for a family of four and the occasional neighbor kids and friends.
Great SUV
This vehicle is fantastic. The styling is timeless and it gets a lot of attention when I drive it. Interior (saddle brown) is gorgeous and very comfortable. Lots of room inside but the back legroom lacks a little. All gauges and switches are conveniently placed. This truck handles very well for almost 5,000 lbs. and the hemi has good power. Fun features are automatic wipers, headlights and Sirius radio. All in all a great truck and I highly recommend it.
Commander Limited 5.7 4x2
Without a doubt one of the best vehicles I've ever driven. Love the power of the 5.7 Hemi. Fuel economy isn't bad for a big V-8, averaging about 16 mpg in mixed driving. Front seat comfort is great, rear DVD is a must have w/ wireless headphones. Rear seat passengers have a great view with rear sunroofs and stadium style seating. The rear seat is a bit snug, though, but great for children or smaller adults. Love the styling, it really stands out, mine is Inferno Red and love the way it looks with the chrome finish wheels. Rides great, especially on long highway trips.
Fun Commander
Have had the new Commander for a week and love it so far. I got to use the rain sensing wipers yesterday and they worked very well. The driver seat memory presets are awesome and the lumbar support makes driving very comfortable. I love the rear DVD entertainment system with wireless headphones!
The Jeep I was waiting for
As a previous owner of an XJ Cherokee, I am partial to the boxy styling. The Commander is what XJs should grow up to become. I have the HEMI. Bought it used with 38K. Has the comfort and ride of a luxury car, but has the power of a sports car. I needed more comfort, room and power and boy did I get it. While there are some squirrelly issues with it, I think it is nit picking. Any major issues have been addressed with TSBs or recalls. Know that any enormous SUV will have bad gas mileage. That aside, this is another keeper for me for some time. Do your homework if you want one, and just pony up for the HEMI. I would not buy new - buy used and take advantage of the depreciation.
life long Jeep momma
I've only had my new Jeep Commander for a month, but I can tell you - have driven Jeeps for 25 years and I just love mine. The ride is so smooth and it takes turns great. The gas mileage is better then I thought it would be. The only thing that I have seen wrong is I should of gotten rain guards for it because I like to drive with my windows down. The price on the 2006 I just couldn't pass up with the deals that they have right now.You can't buy a small car for that price
Nice ride for a change of style
I got tired of all the look alike cars out there, with all the curves and bumps. Now this one stands out and is a better choice for a guy with a family than a minivan. The price is under a Grand Cherokee which is nice. I like the smooth ride and the tight turn radius, I don't like the gas mileage, but this car is bigger and heavier than my last one, the oh so feminine Jeep Liberty. I also like the fact that the third row is there if needed, and that there are lots of standard features like rear sensor and side curtain bags. Makes a lot of difference in terms of safety. I have had it now for a month, and we like it a lot.
Commanding Review
I could not be more excited about a car! This is more than any soccer mom could want. I love my new Jeep. We have three kids, and we all fit perfectly. The kids love the back seat. We have the Limited with the HEMI and there is a huge difference between that and a regular 4.7L. I loved it from the minute I drove it. Plenty of power for a mom on the go and always in a hurry. The DVD and wireless headphones are great, not to mention the SIRIUS radio ready, and great sound system. The leather is great, the roominess is great, I love the chrome on black. It's one sharp ride.
Better Fuel Mileage PLEASE
Unique atyling. Outstanding ride for an SUV. Big and roomy for my three children. Performance is good for the 6 cylinder. This Jeep definitely is a head turner. But fuel mileage is HORRIBLE-16 MPG on the road and 14 around town. My 2000 4Runner got 20 MPG consistently.
My New Jeep
I've driven 3 Jeeps now: a Wrangler, a Liberty, and now, the Commander. Without a doubt this is the best of the bunch -- and I loved the Liberty. The room, the ride, the value for money are all exceptional. I recommend the Commander unequivocally to any potential buyer.
Love my Commander
I have owned my Commander for 3 months. I am thrilled with the look and design of the vehicle. I have already taken a road trip with 4 kids and 2 adults; there is hardly any room for "stuff" once the vehicle is full of people. Also the 3.7L v6 engine is a little lagging, I should have gotten the V8, but it has not spoiled my enjoyment of the Commander. I plan on getting another one after this with the 4.7L V8.
I love my new Jeep
I bought a fully loaded Limited 4x4 with the 5.7L V8. Total cost just under $39K before taxes. I was looking at an H3 ( its V6 is a joke, otherwise nice) originally and also considered a Tahoe, Armada and Sequoia. Then I drove the Commander and knew that was the one (although being me I still had to go test drive it 2 more times to make sure). Smooth ride, great acceleration, very beautiful styling inside. 1000 miles on it so far and no complaints. Still waiting for snow to use the 4X4.
WOW What A Ride.. and SAFE
Had a 1999 Jeep Sahara. When I traded it in, only had 1170 miles (no typo error). Had a great fear of driving except for dirt roads. Got the Commander 2 weeks ago and haven't stopped driving since. I feel so safe in this car. I thought the fear was all in my head, never thinking I didn't feel safe in the car. I love driving again and all fear is gone.
Love my new Commander
Just purchased this Commander (dark khaki) and love it! I traded my Audi, which all of my friends loved, for this vehicle and am extremely happy. My husband was even pleased and I researched and chose this myself. It has clean lines (I like the square look-couldn't bring myself to buy an Element), a smooth ride, and low price with Jeep dependability. Again, I love the look and am happy with the ride and thrilled with the navigation, back-up camera and sunroofs (3). The mpg is not that great but it is still worth every penny. I highly recommend it thus far.
Best of Them ALL
Trade autos every year. Chrysler/Jeep, this is the best. Fun to drive, quiet, handles great. Mileage 17.5 road, 13.5 city. Everyone that's in the market for a SUV needs to test drive and look at the Commander.
Great Vehicle
I have been 2 weeks with my Commander and it has being a great ride so far. Mine is a Limited fully loaded and is really entertaining to drive. This is my third JEEP and it just keep better and better.
Larry
I love my new Jeep. The only problem that I've had with it is the windshield would make this weird noise. So I had to take it back and they fixed it. I enjoy driving it and I love the looks you get.
Excellent vehicle - solid secure
I sell real estate in the Finger Lakes. I must have a very reliable strong 4-wheel drive automobile. My Commander has out performed all the other SUVs I have ever owned. I could use more room in the back for my signs. My little ones love the back two seats. I can not get them out of the Jeep as they want to stay and play. Front seat capacity is very comfortable. Ride is quiet, no road noise. Solid heavy vehicle.
Nice Ride
My wife and I went looking for a midsize SUV. We looked at and test drove several makes and models. The Commander was, by far our favorite. I could feel the quality right away. The ride is very smooth and quiet. The sound system is more than adequate. We were used to driving a little 4-cyl. What a difference the V-8 makes when in traffic and on the highway. The gas mileage is terrible but we expected that going in. The third row seat is convenient for our 2 small children, but they won't stay small forever. Other than that, I see no reason not to keep buying Jeeps in the foreseeable future.
HEMI Commander
I was looking at Range Rovers before stumbling upon the Commander. For the money this SUV is way better, unless you "need" to be seen in a Range Rover. Mine is fully loaded, I mean everything pretty much. It has really been great as far as comfort and fun to drive. Endless power with the HEMI. Aren't we all a little sick of the predictable styling from other manufacturers?
Commander Review
I love this car. Everything about it, from the boxy outside, to the spacious and almost luxuriously rugged inside. It is great. Dependable, awesome!
Owned 3 Jeeps - May want to keep looking
Gas mileage of 15.5 mpg combined city & highway driving on the V8 model much worse than expected or advertised. Gas tank is small and only goes about 200 to 225 miles on a tank of gas. If you have small children that require a car seat(s) it will be difficult to fold the seats down to reach the third row. This is the 3rd Jeep I have owned; Cherokee, Grand Cherokee, and now Commander - Commander by far is the least desirable (if you want a Jeep buy the Grand Cherokee instead).
What a Wonderful Jeep Commander
I purchased a 2006 Jeep Commander Limited with a 5.7 liter Hemi engine with every accessory. This SUV is a dream to drive. It has all that you need: comfort, style, with unbelievable driveability. After a long trip of about 600 miles, my wife and I felt relaxed and enjoyed the trip. This SUV is fun to drive and just clings to the road with ease.
Commander Luv
I am extremely impressed with the ride and handling quality in this vehicle. Also, the retro type of design is first rate. The 4.7 liter engine is impressive in such a heavy vehicle.
Got Gas?
I have the HEMI and am getting 12 miles to the gallon. The gas tank is small and I am forever filling up. Child seats are difficult to fit into 2nd row and impossible to fit into the 3rd row. I traded in a Durango for this Jeep and all I can say is I want my Durango back.
Top Notch Danny
Upgraded from our Liberty to the Commander. SUV is secure and handles great for a its size. Leather seats and drivers area are generous and comfortable, kids and seats fits great in the second row, plenty of cargo room. We like that the third row is not a bench but 2 indepedent seats that ultimately allow for multiple cargo configurations. Controls are easy to use, the 5 speed transmission is seamless and efficient. Kids love the command view skylights and we love the moonroof. This vehicle also gets a thumbs up from kerKernel saying that this vehicle provides me with the lifestyle my family deserves.
So why the Jeep?
The first car I ever owned was a 1980 Pontiac Phoenix and it was nothing but trouble. Unfortunately it would never "rise from the ashes" after it literally caught on fire. Since then I have only owned Japanese cars and the last three cars I've owned were made by Lexus. All great cars! So why am I abandoning my American car boycott and buying a Jeep? First, my wife and I just love the styling. Second, and more importantly, it's a great value. We opted for the 5.7 Hemi with all the trimmings and the sticker was $10,000 less than a similarly equipped Lexus GX470. Throw in the deep discount we got off the sticker and it was a no brainer. Don't forget about the two years of free gas. :)
2006 Jeep Commander 65th Anniv. Ed w/4.7
I was excited to finally upgrade to this new Jeep from my reliable but old 95 Dodge Ram 2500HD 4x4 reg. cab P/U with over 150,000 miles. Excited to see the 3rd row (more family friendly then the P/U), and Jeep's backing of off-road performance and quality. However this is not the case. This vehicle has been a problem child since day one. With the whistling sounds, staining cloth seats, breaking vent covers, etc. and of course the poor mpg with a small fuel tank. Too bad the diesel isn't released yet with approximate mpg of 20+ as seen on the Liberty/Sprinter. On the plus side: tight steering, drives like a Caddy, pulls a trailer of 3,000 lbs with no problems. Can't wait for snow&go extreme off road to see what it can do.
fun ride!
I looked at everything. Drove everything, after about 6 months of looking I finally went for the Commander and have no regrets. It is awesome in the snow. The traction control going up and down slick roads works great!
great suv
I have the 4.7 v8 limited black with every option. I've had it for 4 months and I still get a lot of looks. I do recommend the hemi if you like driving faster than most. I purchased the chrome side steps and it really fills the look of the vehicle out. This is a smooth riding vehicle and is fun to drive. you will get a lot of compliments owning this vehicle. The great thing about the Jeep Commander is there is no other body style like it.
Commander is the way to go
I am an enthusiast of the grand Cherokee and have owned several jeeps. The commander is the best model yet. With my ever growing family the third row seating makes it a lot easier when transporting friends in addition to my two kids without having to go the minivan route. With the ever unpredictable gas prices I was hesitant about getting the HEMI but did anyway and given the size and power of the engine it doesn't do that bad on gas mileage. Everyone says how terrible the gas mileage is on it which I found that if you use the power it will eat your gas but if you drive conservatively you will get maximum mileage. I get about 15mpg on ave. which was the same i got when i had the good 4.0L
Great Truck!
So far so good! I have owned my Commander for about 3 months. The only issue I have had was a wind noise from the windshield. I took it to the dealer and it was quickly resolved. I have just performed my first oil change and the truck runs beautifully. I average between 14.5 to 16.7 miles per gallon. Anyone who buys one of these shouldn't get to complain about something like that (mpg's).
love the Commander
Recently came back from a long trip where we averaged between 20 and 22 mpg. City driving gas mileage comes in around 17 mpg. Certainly gets a lot of admiring glances. The teenage boys love it. It's great that this has that third row for unexpected riders, but there is no storage space when there are 7 people. Over all we love it!
Looks great but watch out for glitches
The style and performance on the Commander is great. However, our Commander is headed back to the dealership for the 4th time because of glitches with the engine's computer. In the 8 months we have owned this car the check engine light has been on more than off. Last time the dealership replaced the entire engine computer which kept the check engine light off for about 30 days. Now it is back on yet AGAIN and the engine is running rough. I have been pleased with everything else but this one problem necessitating numerous trips back to the dealership makes me wish I had spent just a bit more money and purchased the Lexus SUV instead.
Very pleased so far
We have had our Commander about three weeks. Our Limited really looks sharp in black. Rode and handled well on a 4 hour trip to the beach. The 4.7 is more than adequate for power. The Limited package adds a lot of nice goodies that we have never had before (like heated seats, sunroof, rain sensing headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, reverse sensor, etc.). I did not get navigation -- IMO you can buy a ton of paper maps for the money. I would definitely recommend checking out the Commander before buying a competitor. I like it much better than our previous 04 GMC Envoy -- handles better, tighter steering, slightly better ride, better looks. Mountaineer and 4Runner ride like 2 horse wagons.
I love this SUV
This is a great SUV that provides the rugged feel that is associated with safety and a comfortable fun ride. We bought this SUV right before Christmas and drove it over 400 miles for holidays with the family. It drove great and I felt safe and comfortable driving it. I would recommend this SUV for any one thinking of buying one.
Very pleased
Very pleased to date. Was considering an H3 and the Commander is much more comfortable, has more interior room and I don't have to deal with the Hummer Haters.
My Red 4.7 L Commander is top notch
I love it. Looked long and hard for a safe vehicle, 4x4 with 5 star crash ratings. Best ride, quality, look and you can't beat the price. The 5 speed is wonderful. I did splurge for the 7yr/100,000 mile warranty via Chrysler. As big as a Durango, a whole lot safer! The 4.7 v8 has enough pick up and pull also.
Hate the seat belt sound
Got the car in September of 06, i love it has great power on the 4.7 eat a boat load of gas if your doing a lot of city driving. the tire light went on for no reason, hate it when the dash board looks like a Christmas tree. the dealer ship blamed it on the weather. the seat belt alarm could stress you out big time make you want to brake something its very very annoying. and it wont stop until you buckle up. but for highway driving after like 2 min it shuts up. over all the jeep is a monster and a lot of fun to drive. get a pair of shades and cruise its a lot of fun
Amazing and Fun!
Since owning this vehicle (2 weeks at time of review) I have put over 1200 miles on it including some off-roading. I can honestly say that Jeep has provided a ruggedly refined vehicle with ample room for everyone and the great off-roading prowess we have all come to expect. The vehicle let out a few loud groans but those were mostly due to the engine putting out some more torque to get up those hills. Surprisingly I am getting similar mileage to the Jeep Liberty (14 in city and 19 - 21 on highway). Overall I am very pleased and impressed with this vehicle.
Jeep Commander Limited
Easy to drive. Has every amenity. It is really hard to believe that the car is as big as it is. The interior is also beautifully appointed. We put it up against SUV's from Volvo (V90), BMW (X5), Lexus and Mercedes and it was clearly the winner for the money.
