Leaky Commander

I am very disappointed with the design and quality of certain aspects of this vehicle. Other than the faulty water pump at 10,000 miles, the Service 4WD message popping up in the dash display, leaky rear brake light assembly.... The worst problem is the leaky sunroof ... leading to stereo damage. The car has been back and forth to the dealership due to the above problems as well as the water leaking from the sunroof area. As I am writing this, my wife is taking the Commander back to the dealership FOR THE 4th TIME ... The first 2 times for a leak on the driver's side .. The last time there was standing water at the front pass. floor. This time water is dripping onto the mid console/seats.

Unbelievably fast! Love the Hemi. Well built. Awesome interior. 4x4 will go anywhere. Kids love it. Stadium seating nice feature. Hauls just as much as my Suburban. Sound system, navigation and back up camera are the bomb. If you never owned a Jeep this is the one that you must buy if you need to move the family around (in a hurry - if need be). Did I mention the Hemi! Oh, man...it moves!

Bought just off lease with 10K miles. Absolutely flawless condition. Had excellent care. Must have always been garaged. Think I know why. Previous owner probably never drove it. Same here. I hate driving this thing. I have had 14 Jeeps over the years. This one is the nicest appearing and the biggest disappointment. V6 Auto. It has the worst seats. Feels like I sit on top of them instead of in them. Short lower seat bottom puts my legs to sleep. Always hurts my lower back no matter what. Poor acceleration, awkward shifts. I usually shift manually when in hills. Found out if I stay out of overdrive and in 4th gear I get better fuel mileage. The sound system is sucky. Terrible sound. Junk.

My 2006 Commander is the best riding and most comfortable Jeep I've ever owned. With the incentives in place at the time I bought it, it was a real value too. The next time I'll be looking for: 1) A V-8 ... the V-6 is a bit underpowered; 2) Let's give the 3rd row seat some leg room; and 3) How about just a couple more inches of storage capacity when the 3rd row seat is opened? Would it help to hang the spare tire off the back, a la the Liberty?

I bought my Jeep in 2006 with 26 miles on it and basically have driven it crazy to the tune of 103,000 miles with no engine problems at all. Only negative I'd have to say is the Goodyear tires that came with the vehicle were awful, I replaced them with Fusion XTI and its been great since...keep up the scheduled maint. and it will keep running.

I did buy my Jeep Commander used, I should have looked it up first i bought in 2007 and it had 10,000 miles. Of course the salesman "fibbed" and of course i bought the vehicle. REGRET! since i had bought it in October of 07 it has been in the shop over 25 times! seat belt problems, slow pickup, wind leaks you name it. Though i never have had as bad of problems as the others i still definitely regret this purchase! I will always research a vehicle first from now on. The body style is awesome and i have never been a red fan until i saw the Inferno and red rock reds they are gorgeous, But, When you think Jeep you think dependable, durable and long lasting this jeep is none of the above!

I drove my 2006 Commander through about 12-18 inches of water, and wound up blowing my engine this past October. I had it 8 months and it had >9k miles on it. Chrysler refused to honor it as a warranty repair, they said I did not drive it as intended. (Please look up how they define "Trail Rated") What kind of trail is Jeep referring to? A bike trail? A bunny trail? What? Turns out the air intake is low on the vehicle. Just below the front bumper! The insurance company that the dealer finance department referred me to refused to pay for the repair. I had to pay over $8K for a new engine out of pocket. I got my vehicle back just before Christmas. Now the new engine is burning oil.

I Bought this Jeep Dec. 12, 2006. I drove it 785 miles and the engine overheated, so I took it to the dealer and they stated it was a small crack in the bypass hose which was leaking. I had an overheat problem again about 2 weeks later. I returned to the dealer, they stated I drove it too hard (which is NOT true). They rebuilt the engine and now I only get 12 miles to the gallon. I went to the dealer to complain they said it was due to the overheat. As for the water coming in after a rain, I am so angry that the Chrysler Company will NOT do anything to remedy this. This SUV is not a good deal at all.

We've had nothing but problems with our 2006 Jeep Commander. It was 1 year old and had less than 24,000 miles on it when we bought it. It looks great, but a pretty vehicle hides lots of problems. There is a design flaw in the drain tubes from the sun roof. The drain tubes are so small that they clog very easily and are very difficult to access to clean. When it's clogged, the water backs up through the hand-holds and drips into the cabin and soaks the floorboard. The door handles are attached to the plastic back of the door panel and they break easily and you have to replace the entire door panel. We've had to replace 3 of the 4 door panels to fix the doors so we can open them from the inside. Both front seats wear unevenly and cause the plastic panel concealing the seat adjustment mechanics to break. The leather seats crack and require custom seat covers or you'll have to shell out over $800 for a new replacement seat. In short, Jeep should be ashamed of this product and we've decided that we will NEVER buy another Jeep product again!

Real 4WD

I was trading in a Town and Country AWD. Snowy winters in Northern PA. made 4WD a requirement. Room to haul gear was also a necessity. With the discontinuation of the AWD minivans (Caravan and then Town and Country) it was time for a new choice in the lineup. A Grand Cherokee? Too small inside. The Commander looked OK but I wondered if it would ride like a truck. It does not - actually quieter, smoother and more comfortable than the minivans were. A real 4WD system for the winter. And the Command View sunroofs (three of them) for pleasant weather. A long option list and nice interior packages round out the bill.

Day 1 Feb. 17, 2006: I drove it home and noticed it was smoking, and I was losing oil. It turned out the problem was caused at plant during assembly; some of the valve-cover gasket screws were left out causing the oil to seep from the engine and onto the exhaust and undercarriage. May 26, 2006 I drove from NNJ to VA Beach for Memorial Day weekend; there was hesitation on acceleration, and periods of rough idle. On the way back I started to hear a whistle type of sound like wind noise in the cabin; it only sounds while vehicle. is in motion, even though all windows, doors, and sunroof were shut tight. Today June 15, 2006 with only 2,500 another problem! Drivetrain thumping noise.

Well where do I start... OK when I pull up to a stop light I should not have to lean forward to see the light; when I have a passenger, he/she can not get into the glove dept: your sun roof water ports get clogged and leak to the floor board, REALLY: why would you only put on map holder behind the driver seat and not one on the passenger side: the off road handle why put it way from the seat, the sun blinds totally useless for the side use: navigation completely non user friendly, the updates are $300 for a disk: cup holders for the back seat with 3 passengers total count ZERO! fold down seat for access to rear seats only a kid can get in and out. then all the common problems that come with the commander. why send such a p.o.c. car out I will never again buy a JEEP I will tell everyone see NOT to BUY a JEEP !!!!

We made mistake and bought this car in used in 2006 at the base model. Right know it has 186,000 miles on it and is a piece of crap. About a couple of months ago we were driving from the veterinarians office and their was a big boom and it would go into all of the gears but, when we put it into drive and press the gas it would just roll back and start making these popping and cracking noises. So we got it towed and the mechanic said it was the drive shaft and to fix it would cost $500. So we got it fixed and now we are trying to buy a sequoia, but it has to get fixed first. Anyway it is great in the snow, and amazing going off road. Now it’s the end of August we bought the sequoia back in February and we love it. The is just sitting in our back yard and we use it for moving dirt in our trailer, and moving our camper around the house. We were going to sell it but we think now is not the right time.

It will shut off all dash lights make a lot pop and come back on. took it to the dealership and they can't find anything wrong. Then the way home from the dealership it happens twice. But the dealership said everything is fine... Yeah right!

Have had my 06 Commander now a month, am about to hit 50k miles and think I have finally found a vehicle I will keep for a very long time. After reading many reviews I hope I got one of the good ones as it seems that most either love or hate this vehicle with very little grey area for this SUV. I have had more trouble dealing with the dealership on things promised in the deal than with any other part of this purchase. It is NO wonder that the American car industry continues to be in the tank when they still seem to lack in customer service. Up until now I have owned Japanese and have had far better service. Now onto the Jeep Commander-I LOVE IT! All but the gas mileage. :( Fix the mpg's)

I'll never buy a Jeep again

I bought this vehicle for my wife and son. It was the right size (not too big not too small). The problem is quality, I've had the computer replaced, spark plug replaced and the body molding around the wheel well is loose. The vehicle just cut off for no reason (replaced computer), then a ignition failure light came on and we took to the dealership (replaced the spark plug) but said we needed to get the fuel injectors cleaned (16,000 miles) to fix the problem, $300. I had a Mercedes SUV with 58,000 miles and never had to have the injectors cleaned. When I complained about the moldings being so loose the service department said "we have new Commanders that are worse" that doesn't make it right.

I bought this vehicle for its nice size (no to big, no to small) for that it is great, interior is great and very functional for a small family. My problems are mechanical. We have had to replace the main "computer" which was covered by the warranty. Next it was misfiring, they replaced a spark plug but said that we needed to get the fuel injectors cleaned with only 15,000 miles ($300). I had a MB ML500 with 59000 miles, never had to get the fuel injectors cleaned!!!! The wheel well plastic is really loose and the dealership said "we have new ones that are worse then that". Excellent family vehicle, poor quality and even worse customer service, I have reported Jeep but no response from dealer.

I traded in my 2001 Trooper with 156,000 miles for this brand new Commander. Fuel tank is a big disappointment - only 17.2 gallons. However, I have increased my highway mileage to an average of 20.6 MPG by adding in a bottle of gas treatment or fuel injector cleaner with every other tankful. City driving is approx 16.5 MPG. I have a possessed passenger window. Not thrilled about gas cap - anyone can open it, no safety lock. Not much cargo room (Trooper held a sheet of plywood with ease) and the loss of 3"-4" because of 3rd row seat now folding level with tailgate. Molding not glued to back door frame. Replaced windshield which also took part of factory molding with it!

I love this vehicle i feel very safe in it. the only issue is the design to access the 3rd row seating. other then that i love it. I love the power when you need it. If you have to merge onto the freeway or interstate quickly that is never an issue. I will be sad to see that under our new administration in the white house that our safety on the road's will be comprised over the new large lie's about the EPA. So with that said i hope to hold onto my commander for a long time.

After a test drive and a great dealer price we have a great vehicle that is safe and fun to drive. If it wasn't for my son and his study of the vehicle I was looking at an GMC Envoy. Try this one and you will like it.

I've been a Jeep owner since 1985. I've loved and trusted them until Jan 2007 when I was sideswiped by a van while traveling 35-40pph on the highway. As the Commander spun, rolled, and violently hit the pavement, the driver seat and the top of the pax seat had no protection from the outter elements. Neither side airbag deployed. It was a horrifying incident which totalled the Jeep. The only life saver safety item that did its job properly was the seat belt. Had I not been wearing the federally mandated basic seat belt I would be dead.

I purchased this vehicle under 3 weeks ago, and it's been in the shop 4 times already, and it going back in another few days. I purchased it with 1200 miles on it, for a 3-year old vehicle, that should mean it's in like-new condition. The transmission died the 2nd day I had it, had the PCM and solenoid replaced, the auto-headlights and rain-sensitive wipers don't work, there is a break in the wire in the headliner (getting that fixed in a few days), the passenger window doesn't roll up on it's own, and now the sunroof is leaking. A regular piece of junk.

My parents bought this car in September after my sister and I begged for it. My mom was very hesitant at first because she thought that it was a Hummer. She also didn't want people to think that she was a gas guzzler. On the other end my dad, the typical manly man, loves Howard Stern (Sirius was a major plus), loves sports and he loves his new manly car. Also it was a huge improvement from our purple minivan. As a young person I was attracted to this car for the sunlights in the back and I also liked the silver handles on the door. When we went on our first big trip with this car we went to Palm Springs. Interstate 10 down there is very windy, and we could hear all of the wind!

The commander is an excellent vehicle. Right away I was able to test it on snowy roads and it performed well. I have taken it off-road on a trail that I would never have gone in any other vehicle that I have owned. The problems that I have are with hthe braking system and the engine fan. Certain quality issues are problematic as well, arm rests are bubbling and the chrome trim is letting loose. Vehicle performs well when pressed and is comfortable to drive, very comfortable and a fun vehicle to own.

The best Mother's Day gift I ever received besides the love of my Children. Only problems I have had was the Factory installed windshield was done incorrectly so when I had the window replaced due to a crack the entire frame had to be redone - the dealership was great in handling this. I have been experiencing a slight loss of power when turning street corners. I thought it was me but my brother in law and husband noticed the same thing. It is in the shop right now because yesterday my instrument panel went wacky and lost all control of gauges off and on during my interstate drive. I am sure this is minor though. My kids hate the seat belts. They are hard to clip with a booster seat in place

Love the vehicle. Great bang for the buck. Only problem since purchase is dashboard's exterior temperature gauge faulty and has been since purchase June '06. Dealer's excuse is faulty software problem and waiting for Chrysler to correct. Lame excuse if you ask me since this vehicle has been in production for over a year now. Also dissatisfied with exterior room when 3rd row seats are folded down. They do not recess into the body but rather take up valuable vertical space. Would rather have not had the 3rd row but unfortunately it is mandatory; they go with the vehicle rather than being an option as they should have been for us who never will use them.

"Just right" size. Not a teeny, dinky suv and not a 'boat' that minimizes the driving experience. It is nimble and fun while also offering great storage and passenger carrying options. Visibility is really good, I can clearly see the front end and all around the vehicle. The seat adjustments along with the pedal adjustments create a more than comfortable arrangement for my 5 foot nothing size. I admit it is a little high for loading my 2 year old into her carseat in the back, but I love the height when I'm on the open road and feel the trade-off is worth it. I can get 18 mpg on highway, but I have to work at it a little. Wish the MPG was better.

I love my Black 2006 Limited Jeep Commander. I traded my 2000 Lexus SUV for it. I had planned on buying another Lexus but for the price and quality I felt like giving the Commander a chance. I had to have a 4 wheel drive and a vehicle that was wheelchair friendly. Sooo, it works out perfectly. It is tough but yet stylish and safari looking. I have owned it for almost a year now and love it thus far! My son traded his Z-3 for a Wrangler. So, you can call us a Jeep Family now. Thanks to all who helped make this vehicle possible. ;)

Loved this darn truck since the first time I laid eyes on one. It is the classic Jeep style that won me over. Then after I drove one that was it...had to have. Traded my Durango and here I am...owner of a Limited Commander with the hemi. The truck has a great ride and extremely comfortable leather seats. All gauges are easy to reach and have had not one problem so far. Would highly recommend!

The Commander

A lot different than what I'm used to in a Jeep - the old type was based more for off road. And to me had a rough ride to it. The new Jeeps are still for off road but my Commander has a lot more room inside and more of car like ride. A wider stance and with the wider tires and 17 inch wheels adds to a more comfortable ride. Has a lot of nice features for the consumer. And the back up sensors come in handy on the SUV. Overall I'm very pleased with my Jeep and the third row seating makes it nice for smaller children; they have their own cup holders, AC with controls is a big plus and they have a place to plug in their favorite games.

We bought this for my wife to haul our new baby around. We were quite happy for the first year, but then it started needing more and more repairs. The frequency and severity of the repairs has increased over time, and the warranty is about to run out. We no longer trust the vehicle, and are nervous about what happens after the warranty expires. Sadly we feel we have no choice but to dump it. issues: 4WD system solenoid failure, dead battery after 1 year, brake rotors warped at 25K, stalling issues, glitchy climate control, tranny doesn't shift correctly when cold, transmission seal leak, numerous tire leaks, AC no longer gets cold, door latch fell off, etc, etc....

I have had the truck almost 2 years. Thank god it is a lease because it is not good and I can't wait to turn it in. The wind noise and whistle sound is annoying. The mpg is a joke. Jeep said 15/21. I am lucky to get 13.5 at all times, highway or city. Today the moonroof blew off of the car on the interstate at 70 mph. I turned to see where it was and it was gone. Lucky it didn't kill someone. Look at everything else. This truck is a lemon.

I initially had my heart set on a Durango, but also had my eye on the Commander. The first I drove a Commander was in my test drive (I usually try to rent a potential purchase for a weekend) and was impressed. I think the quality of materials and assembly are on par with its cost. Not luxurious, but comfortable, particularly with the leather like mine. The back-up sensor is a must, given that the stadium seating limits rear visibility. If you require all 3 rows plus a lot of storage, you might look at something else, because with those seats up, there's only about 8" of storage space. It meets my needs, as I only occasionally use the 3rd row. One really bad thing is the awful mpg.

After much research, I decided to buy the Jeep Commander Limited 4x4, mostly for safety features and comfort for my family. We have driven this vehicle from East to West Coast, North to South and absolutely love it! The safety of our Commander was tested recently and saved my families lives. Though the vehicle was totaled, the Commander took all of the impact, we were able to walk away from this vehicle with minor injuries. I will be purchasing another! One tough SUV! Gas mileage is not so good, but is made up for in safety, need the steel to be safe.

The tank is small and the fuel mileage is terrible so I'm at the gas station quite often. Also because of the stadium seating it is hard to see through the rear mirror. The upside is pretty good though. It's the best driving SUV I have owned and it is extremely comfortable.

I love the way this vehicle drives and the roominess of the interior. The engine is quiet as well as little road noise. Off-road the Commander is just that -- commanding. It is a very capable off-road vehicle and it performed better than I would have expected. Whether the Commander is for work, play or comfort this vehicle has it all and I love it.

I fell in love with the model on the showroom floor. Refused to pay $820 for the chrome wheels; didn't need the hemi engine; didn't want the back seat entertainment system. LOVE the heated leather front seats. Lots of extras I'm still learning to use, but they are worth the cost. The car runs so quiet I have to listen to be sure it cranked. Cruises powerfully at 80 with great road handling in the curves. Only bad thing is it needs a bigger gas tank. I want to go about 350 miles between fill ups. Gets around 17 on the interstate, better if I go slower. Highly recommend this model. Plus I feel important driving this impressive SUV.

After owning many vehicles since I started driving in 1960 I have found a real comfortable and fun vehicle. I have made two trips to South Carolina and have enjoyed the over the road trips and ability to go off road when I needed it. I look forward to this winter and driving in the snow as we are going north for a vacation in January.

This thing can Tow!

I was on my way home from a wedding on 07/08/06. About 10 miles from town (Gillette, WY), there was a 23 foot motor home that had run out of gas along side I-90 that was towing a full size, extended cab Chevy truck on a vehicle dolly. I didn't have enough room for a passenger and needed to get home. I hooked up a tow rope and hauled the motor home and truck to town. I didn't drive any faster than 40mph for safety reasons. I pulled up to the gas station towing that 23 foot camper and full size Chevy truck. I unhooked the tow rope. The guy shook my hand and offered to give me some money for my troubles. I told him that all I wanted was a hand shake and a Christmas card.

I have owned just about every model Jeep prior to '06 so I know what to expect from my Jeeps (or so I thought). I have all service performed at the dealership. This car has spent more time in the shop than every other Jeep I have owned COMBINED! I have had 2 computer modules replaced, had the transmission replaced, had 5...yes FIVE new nav radio systems (each time I have to pay Sirius another transfer fee), had the 4wd wiring harness short out, dead electrical system left me stranded, a burst fuel line molded through the firewall (that was a doozey of a repair bill), and now I find myself stranded 900 miles from home because the 4WD system decided not to talk to the main computer any longer

This isn't my first JEEP product, nor my last. I have owned Comanche, Cherokee 4X4 (and still own a great little `97 Country) and two late model Grand Cherokee Laredos. All have had the venerable 4.0L inline six to pull my 24ft offshore boat. This one has the 4.7L V8 which makes a ton of torque and gets much better fuel economy than any of the old sixes did. I have never been unhappy with my JEEPS; they have been extremely reliable and have never failed me.
