160k miles & going strong
I purchased my 2004 X-Type 3.0 in January, 2011 for $6k. It had 117k, was in excellent shape (except tires), and only one previous owner. The car has been great - routine maintenance, replaced compressor for A/C, couple of minor repairs, all done by local garage vs Jag dealer - less than $2200 in 4 years. Heads-up: rear seat leg room minimal. Fabric covering front roof supports has separated - used fabric glue to repair (easy fix). Requires premium gasoline - upside is it gets 25-27 mpg on trips, only 20 around town. AWD a plus however low ground clearance hinders going in deep snow. Been a great car - no regrets!
220,000 miles and still looks new
I have had a ton of cars and this is right up there with Mercedes etc. Still shines like new. Yes, I have had to replace some things - sensors and cooling system but the car never died. Repairs are not cheap but I'm still going on long trips without a worry. AWD is a big plus. I have so many miles on it the website won't let me plug it in !

So far, so good!
Bought my 1-owner X-Type locally, excellent cond., "Platinum" color, with 116k miles in January after reading all I could on-line & checking with another X-Type owner. Put all new Kumho tires on right away. I've driven close to 2k miles and absolutely no complaints. Super smooth shifting, quick acceleration, very quiet ride - except for hearing the transmission (apparently common) and a little wind noise at highway speeds if I have the interior shade for sunroof pulled back. Parts are outrageously expensive - found local Carquest can get OEM parts for a lot less. Paid $6k & dealer fee. Everyone amazed-beautiful, well-built car for the money!
Very Pleased With 2004 X-Type
I purchased the car new in August 2004 for my wife. She and I both love it. We also had a 1989 XJ6 at the time, and knew Jaguar's spotty reputation for reliability was for real with the XJ6. Not so for the X-type...it has had less problems than any other automobile I have ever owned. Only mistake I made was buying an extended warranty; all other cars I have done this with, this has paid off, but not for the X-Type..which has been nearly trouble free for the entire extended warranty period. I highly recommend this car. We always use Shell premium gas; makes a difference in engine running smoothly.
Autobahn driving
We have had our 2004 Jaguar X-type 3.0 for four years now and we love it. Have not had one single problem with it. We regularly drive it on the autobahn in Germany where we live. It is electronically stopped out at 126 MPH but anywhere from zero to 126 MPH, the car handles like it is on a city street doing 35 MPH. I would recommend this car to anyone. It is AWD and handles great in snow or in rain. We have videos of us driving 90 MPH on snow covered roads. Extremely comfortable on long trips. Heated seat for the winter. Love it!!
One of the best cars you can buy
This is my 2nd car I have owned in my 3 years of driving. I originally bought it because when I was a kid my dad had a Jag XJ8L and I loved it. This car has been outstanding for me. But I was given a offer that I couldn't refuse which made me put the Jag up for a little. I ended up driving a BMW 740iL (E38) Sport for about a year and a half. But coming back to the Jag was a great decision. I can't more pleased to return to a car. The only down side of that is the BMW had a V8 vs a V6 so I am use to a little bit more power, but I can get over that. This car is outstanding!

Great performance & dependability
Sadly, I totaled my Jag last week. It had over 105,000 miles and still drove like it was new off the lot! Whether in sport mode or regular this Jag hugs the road like a dream, stops on a dime, and accelerates on demand. Of course, I did service my car regularly- -which helps with whatever car you own. I had no doubt in my mind that the car would have rolled over 300,000 miles. I've owned Mercedes, Lexus and BMW and would (hands down) place this car above all of those on reliability and performance. I am currently looking for another X-type to replace it!
Pleasant Surprise!!!
Proves the mistaken reaction to owning a Jaguar. Most of the adverse reviews come from individuals that have never owned one. Normal preventative maintenance provides pleasant ownership.

So good I am getting another one
I purchased my 04 certified from a local Jaguar dealer. It has been nothing short of excellent. The car is 6 yrs old and still gets compliments where ever I go. I keep it mostly dealer serviced and it has really not cost me much in repairs. With the select warranty they have fixed the little things that have popped up, but nothing major so far. I like it so much that I am trading it back to the dealer for another low mileage X Type with more options. I was hooked the first time I drove it and the awd system is excellent. I can drive through anything with other cars and trucks are stuck on the side of the road. I wish that Jaguar still made them or came up with a gen II X Type. Hello Jaguar!
Ok for a first luxury car
I was 25 when I bought my X-type, my first "luxury" car after I finished grad school. The car is not perfect as it has been in the shop several times and I've spent about $2000 on little annoyances in just a few months, but I feel safe and its no lemon. Be sure to find a reputable repairman quick! The car is BEAUTIFUL to look at and after a year of ownership I still turn back and look at it. The interior is also nice but the seats are a little flat. Gas mileage is OK and my 3.0 in sport mode picks up pretty well. In sum if you're looking for a true luxury car you may want to look elsewhere but if you're young and looking for a eye-catching ride you can't go wrong with the X-type 3.0.
Great Car
I bought my X-Type new in 2004 and still have it. After over 90K miles there are only two problems - the interior cloth material falling away from the front and read roof posts (like several others have mentioned) and the headlight assembly breaking due to what I guess is the front end stiffness. My dealer in New Orleans has been terrific and fixed the interior cloth issue for free. The headlight repair estimate was quit expensive so I've opted to operate the car with less than perfectly aligned headlights. Overall the car has been one the best cars I've owned in 41 years of driving.
Why bad reviews?
I do not understand why Edmunds rates this car down, I nearly did not buy it in '04 because of that and it has been a terrific car! It handles wonderful in all types of road conditions, it has great pep and I always get 26+mph, if I slow down to speed limit of 5 above it goes up to 27+. Even after 5 years people still admire it and make comments. I always trade by 4 years but I can't find anything I like better. The only criticism I have is premium gas requirement. The ride is a bit stiff but the handling more than makes up for it. Listen to the owners Edmunds, we like this car.
Update On 17K miles Jag XT 3.0With High Speed Vibration Problem
Fortunately, the Dealer I bought this car from went the extra mile needed to rectify the problem. Besides new wheels and a few other replaced parts, they provided a second new set of tires, again alligned and balanced of course, and I took the car up to 90 on the highway with zero vibration evident, and a whole new ride overrall. Then when I went through my glove compartment to review the Registration paperwork, I found another envelope with my name on it -- inside was cash equal to my first month's paymment. The Dealer carries all highline and next to highline vehicles at bottom line pricing and obviously backs up the customer in regard to the New York State Warranty rules. Contact me at TGGaryVerizon.net if you are interested in knowing more - Good News! The dreaded high speed vibration in the X Type does have a fix. TGGary
Cat, Subies and Bimmers, 70K update.
OK, so said I wouldn't buy it out of the lease and I did anyway. It was the cheapest thing to do. Just put shocks, struts, tires and front brakes on it, all wear items. Haven't had any other problems other than a front axle seal leak, covered under warranty. The car's style stands out in a sea of styling mediocrity and angry kitchen appliances. Gas mileage stands at 23 MPG on premium fuel over 71K miles. Never any major problems, just a bunch of annoying small ones and it has never left us sitting, unlike every Japanese car we've ever owned.
has some faults
A few surprising build quality issues. center armrest console is rubbish and creaks and moans if you put any weight on it. The headliner/nterior fabric is coming off all over the place. There is no trunk button in the interior. I've never heard of a car without a release. Requires expensive premium fuel, for this price point, a really bad idea. This is not a $60k car. The rear leg room is ridiculously small for this size of a car. There's more room in my ford fusion. there's more room in an audi a4. The gas mileage is appalling. I drive 98% freeway miles and i get 20 mpg and i hear most people get much worse.
Good, but not Fantastic
The X-type looks great inside and out. To me it looks like a mini XJ. There are several items that I would like to point out to potential buyers. I have the 3.0 Liter but it is weak with hardly any torque. Gas mileage is horrible. Much less than the sticker says. I drive about 1/2 city 1/2 highway, and average only 17 MPG. Also, the car has alot of rattles, and the springs are very squeeky. The car rides very harsh, especially on dips or rough roads. Overall a decent car, but the lack of build quality really shows.
Scary at times, but so far, so good.
Got this in June 07 with 32k miles. Now have 55k on it, and the only repair has been a worn tie-rod end. I have heard horror stories about Jaguar reliability over the years, but I took the plunge and am glad I did. One thing I never get over is the odd noises that this car makes. Squeals, whines, whistles, bumps, woomps, thumps, etc. For one thing, it appears that every road noise comes inside. For another, wind noise actually makes a whistling around the A pillars. But, overall, I can't complain. 22-24 mpg, good looks, good performance, lots of features, and the cachet of owning a Jag for under $20000. Still keeping my fingers crossed, but so far, glad I bought this car.
great car
We didn't find the color or equipment we wanted at the dealer so he found one for us and actually, gave us a better deal on the one we now have than the ones he had on the lot. We have every option except dynamic stability control. It has proven to be quite a vehicle. While I hear the BMW's and Acura's are better buys, the Jaguar has a "je ne sais quoi" that the others don't and, there is an exclusivity about owning one. We have had no problems after almost 12,000 miles and it still has that like new feeling. Fun to drive, a real head turner and overall we are quite happy with the car. The all wheel drive has proven itself both in the winter and on the windy mountain roads of SW PA.
Awesome Luxury Car
I just bought my first jaguar A 2004 Jaguar x type 3.0 With sport package And love it..It seems to ride great good pick up power all around great car a little expensive for insurance and plates but the car is well worth it..Love the heated seats and the seats are very comfortable I have put 3000 miles already on it... A very dependable car. I love the looks that people give when they see the car - looks like a million bucks very sleek look. The gas millage is not as good as advertised but I get about 20 miles to the gallon. I did do a lot of research on this car before I bought it and seen a lot of positive stuff about it
Cats, Bimmers and Subies 70K Update
I bought it out of the lease only because it was the cheapest way to go. The tire wear was somewhat solved by using Fuzion HRi tires, good for about 30K miles. The headlights bulbs by going to GE silverstars, and the dash vents, superglue. Now the shocks all need replacement, and it's a good thing this car is mostly Ford because most anyone can work on it. The dealer wants an arm, leg and one or two other appendages to replace them. I will be wary of buying another Jaguar.
Cats, Bimmers and Soobies
Started out looking at Subaru H6 Outback sedad and 30K, then realized that this is Jag X/BMW 3 money. All the road test guys say buy BMW 3, and everybody does. Rather than be another mindless Bimmer driver, we chose Jag X- type 3.0. Rides smooth, handles good. 21 mpg so far. Stay away from sport package and 5 stick-they ruin the cars driving dynamic. Road test car you're going to buy-some have vibration at 55- 70 mph as stated by other reviewers. Classic Cars in CHerry Hill NJ was best buying experience ever!!
First JAG
After being a Lincoln man for years I'm snagged by the cat. Better ride than my Continental. Better fuel economy than expected!!! But the Premium Fuel Sucks. A real head turner.(a lot of the neighbors have 3 and 5 series) Fun to drive and manuver in the city. Had to have the dealer check the front alignment for some freathering on the front tires.(Wonderful dealer experience) The X won't be my last Jag.
who has a lemon
I was looking for schematics of the front diff. (pumpkin) and came to Edmunds and found this review of a lady totally dissatisfied with her x- type. I am sorry but I purchased a 04 with 40,000 miles for my wife and the car has been exceptional. Nothing but normal stuff...rear brakes. this lady who says it has been nothing but trouble must have received a Monday/Friday car and am truly sorry she cannot enjoy the luxury of a Jaguar. This is what Ford intended...to have a luxury car be affordable to the middle class. I am a GM fan, oh well can't win them all.
A fine car
The X-type 3.0 has been a pleasure to drive. Although we have not had the car long enough to experience any maintinence intervals however the dealership experience blew us away. The car has good power although acceleration is hampered by the AWD. Downshifts under full throttle could be quicker but this is a "touring car" isn't it? The interier is fabulous. It looks and feels richer than any of the other cars we considered (Mercedes, BMW, Saab, Volvo, Infiniti). This car is well worth a serious look.
Not the stereo-type Jaguar
I have a 2.5 X-type with 5-speed which I purchased new and it's now about 5 year old. This car has had one warranty issue in 5 years and otherwise it has been perfect. Handling is great although you must be willing to let the car lean into a curve on back roads. AWD has been great for trips to Vermont. I will definitely buy another Jaguar. The old stereotype of quality is way over. This is a very good entry luxury car for the money and it's not just as common as dirt like so many other makes either German or Japanese.
Great Car To Drive
Bought this from dealer as a demo with only 1600 miles. Car handles great and has never needed any major repairs. I am upgrading to the new XJ as a result of my wonderful experience with this model. X-type is an entry level Jag but if you want a car different from every other model on the road this is it.
Outstanding Car
This has been a truly outstanding vehicle. We have 22000 miles without a single problem other than the tires wearing out very prematurely. Service has been outstanding. Fantastic in snow.
Love my Jag
I have had my car for a few years now. I bought it used in 06 and now it is 09. I have just done the 60k tune up and I still love it as much as the day I brought it home. It is older, has some scratches but I love the AWD (main reason I didn't buy a Mercedes) and it suits me and my personality. I have never had any problems at all with my car... and now if I had the money would probably buy the new one!! Jag baby... Jag.
A great baby Jag
I purchased my jag new in 2004, and still own it and love it. After comparing it to BMW 325, MB C240 and others, it was the best car for the price. I still get lots of on lookers and the car looks / runs great with no problems after almost 5 years. It also came with a "no cost" maintenance for 4 years, so all I paid for was gas until today. :-)
Bitter sweet
Unfortunately I have fallen in love with this car! It is a beauty to look at and I get lots of compliments. Always asked do I want to sell it. However, I am always nervous. The reliability is a big question mark. It has been repaired twice since purchase (9 months ago) and the check engine light is on as I type. I'm afraid I will have to part with her, if I have any more problems.
This is a ridiculously under-rated sleeper
So many of the professional reviewers have complained that the X-Type was Jaguar's low-point. They complain that it's a Ford Countour/Mondeo underneath. Here's the problem with that reasoning: other than being "common" there wasn't anything wrong with the Ford. Jaguar took a good car, gave it all wheel drive, a 3 Liter V-6, and a body by Geoff Lawson, which made it an excellent car. It's fast (much faster than one would guess looking at it - topping out around 145), it's quiet, it does very well on corners and in the snow, it has a large trunk, and it's comfortable for 4 adults. And now 15 years later these are dirt cheap - frequently under $5,000 on used car lots for a decent one - why buy a Subaru when you can have a Jag for less? Mostly they're easy to service, your local mechanic can handle 95% of the problems. My only complaint is that last 5% that has to be dealt with by a Jaguar dealer are very expensive and Jaguar-specific parts can be slow to arrive. In other words, the car is excellent, it's Jaguar that's the problem.

2004 Jaguar
The odometer on my X-Type just turned 60k w/ no major problems to report. The car has had a loud squeal which appears to emanate from the underside of the car since the day I brought it home. The dealer told me it's normal, that all Jaguars make noise and the decibels are acceptable. A sound shield was installed to muffle the noise, but I still hear it. Aside from that, the dash vents popped off. The dealer replaced them, citing a defect in the plugs that secure them to the dashboard. Overall, the car is nice and is a pleasure to drive. Relatively short money for a luxury vehicle. I'd likely buy another, but will make certain it doesn't squeal before I drive out of the dealership.
Great Car!
I have done a lot of review prior to purchasing this car. I have had a few in my day and this is by far the best car I have ever had. Runs great and the handling is by far superior to anything I have driven. The only thing I needed to do was replace the windshield wiper motor which was very very easy to do. Took all of 30 min. Very stylish for the money and fun to drive in any weather! My wife loves it way more then the Volvo S70 she had. Two thumbs up for me!!
Jagau X-Type 3.0 - WARNING !!!
I bought a new 2002 X-type 3.0. Although I really enjoy driving this car it has been a maintenance nightmare. The car was delivered with three Continental and one Pirelli tires (should have tipped me off). Selected problems over the course of 30,000 miles: transmission seal has been replaced four times, transmission has been replaced, master computer has been replaced, cooling system main valve has been replaced (car had to be towed), brake pads replaced, trunk latch is intermittent. Spoke with jaguar repeatedly about this car no help. STRONGLY RECOMMEND AGAINST BUYING THIS CAR!!!
excellent choice & value for money.
excellent road grip & control makes it a driving pleasure. The advantage of having AWD , all leather. wood interior alon with reverse parking sensor in the price bracket is awesome.
A typical Ford
I am so unhappy with this car. It has had so many problems, I hate the fact of even getting in the car. The transmission went at 9,000 miles, the car has been at the dealer at least 7 times in one year. Thank goodness they offer a free loner car. I have had every color X type in my driveway The sad thing is they all seem to drive like my old ford tempo. Sad because they are a nice looking car. I am not usually one to complain, but I am going back to Acura when this lease is up.
Great driving car
This car is everything I expected it to be. My X looks good and handles really great! I feel like a race car driver when I'm on the highway.
Very Nice Used Purchase
I recently purchased a 2004 jaguar x type. It runs great and is incredibly roomy. The trunk is huge and the rear seats fold down for skis, and other large objects in the trunk. I paid $18,300 for a 2004 (3 years old) and am happy with my deal. The car is quiet, comfortable and fast. I also have been averaging close to 25 MPG on the highway. I have checked out the BMWs and find as new and used cars they are very expensive. The Jag offers a less harsh ride, and a far more economical used purchase. All amenities work well, and the car is really a value. It also offers a slightly more individualistic and eccentric statement than the BMW.
Surprisingly good car
I wanted something everyone else doesn't have that was stylish and had AWD. This car fills the bill. Despite what reviewers say, I really like the JGate shifter. Haven't had any problems at all, except the re- programming of my key remote. Great in the winter...and the car always turns heads.
Wow and more WOW
This is one of the funnest and most sexy cars to drive I just fell in love. I was choosing between this and a Mazda 6 and hands down I am so happy I chose this car. It just makes ya feel like you are better than you really are and that is something you can't put a price on. I get out and just stare at it and have tripped on things from not watching where I am going. If you are EVER lucky enough to buy 1 DO IT!
Jaguar Xtype 2004
I purchased this car as a pre-owned model. It was approximately 5-6 years old at the time. The aesthetics of the car is awesome. However, over the years ,I have found that although it is "technically" a jaguar, it is a cheaper model which has needed repair after repair. I rebuilt the transmission a few months ago. Also antifreeze was getting low and I was not seeing any puddle under the car, so I took it to a mechanic, after the transmission rebuild. The whole part with the hoses had to be replaced(seal was leaking). so I had to get this replaced. Now the engine light is on, so back to the shop. The engine is leaking oil, the drive belt needs to be replaced and on top of that I need to do normal maintenance (brakes, rotors, tires). This car is a nightmare. I know that it isn't new, but I take care of it, and only have 78,880 miles on it. I need a car and a new car right now is sort of out of the question. Over the years it seems like this car has required more than its fair share of repairs. If I could do it again, I would never have purchased this money trap. I believe this car was manufactured by Ford, so why are the parts so impossibly expensive? I can't wait to push this model off a cliff

LEMON !!
My husband purchased this car for me for my 40th birthday. Not a day goes by without regret. It has been nothing short of disastrous. It has been in the shop 7 times for the same two problems: 1)grinding noise located in the right front 2) at about 35 mph the engine begins to vibrate - best description: feels like you are driving over a washboard. They actually REPLACED the engine and it still is not fixed. The interior is falling apart. The lining surrounding the front and back windows is peeling off. The visor mirrors are broken. The back seat seat belts have broken. The glove box will not close properly. Electrical side mirror adjustment switch is faulty. HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE!!
Piece of junk
I bought this car brand new in 2004. I have only 35000 miles and this started giving me problems before even it reached 20,000 miles. I have spent over $2500 on repairs. Now I hear whining noise when I drive and my dealer says it needs all new hoses $2000. I must say quality of Jaguar is far worst than any other car in the market. It's not worth $10,000 I can't believe I paid over $32,000 for this junk. I would never ever buy any Jaguar ever.
Awesome car!!
I saw this car and fell in love with it. Love the awd and the sport button, fast. Great horsepower. My first jag and so far am very impressed, the awd is great and the pick up power is nice to have.
First class car!
This car is an excellent value version. The looks are like those of a traditional jag. Performance is awesome with good punch. The interior is very comfortable and even if it looks compact from out, it is spacious inside. it is solidly built. But I would have loved to go for the S-type. Anyway, I am happy with this car!
fun, fun, fun
This car is great and fun to drive. I purchased it w/navigational system (the british accent is great too). The ride is smooth and very comforatable, pick up to enter the highway is great and the braking is smooth and not awkward.
Nice Car
I don't see how anyone could really complain about this little Jaguar. The engine has good power. The all wheel drive makes the car handle well. It has every feature you would reasonably use or need in a car. It has it's own personality which makes it feel different from other cars. I like the wood shift knob and lack of a button you have to push down to get the shift out of park. I even like the hand break between the seats. I read a review that said the engine lacks torque. The cars goes 0 to 60 in 7 seconds and has a top speed of near 140 miles an hour. The engine can't be that weak.
fun, fun, fun

Forget about everything you ever knew...
This car is tremendous and leaves everything that I've ever thought about Jaguar quality at the door. I'll keep everyone posted but the last 4,000 miles have been exiting and the car handles like a dream. This is AWD and you will not find that in any car in its class (for this price). The car has a terrific sound system and the Nav system is awesome. I actually look forward to driving in it as the same day it was purchased. You owe it to yourself to at least test drive one!
Unbelievable Deal
At the year-end closing prices, this vehicle was impossible to pass. Interior is put together very, very well, just as any luxury vehicle should be. The 2.5 manual has a healthy accelaration and is very quiet. The road feel is typical of a European sedan and cornering is outstanding. The AWD makes you forget about snow, rain and gravel. The manual takes some getting used to, especially shifts from first to second. It is not a large car, especially in the back, but the trunk is larger than most competitors. I am looking forward to many months or years of fun every time I put the key in the ignition.
