Everything We Wanted

2024 Honda Pilot EX-L 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 10A)

LIKES: Ample power; smooth transmission; very comfortable seats; cavernous room for passengers and cargo; quiet ride; excellent design and workmanship. DISLIKES: MPGs, but consistent with the published data; wish it came with Michelins instead of Goodyears; technology takes some learning time and sone of the safety systems are intrusive. We are in our mid-seventies so we’re slow to get used to all the safety measures and technology features. However, what Honda seeks to provide is generally acceptable. We opted for the EX-L and are satisfied with the extent of its whistles and bells. Looking forward to road trips.

Traded my American Made SUV with issues the shop said was”the nature of the beast!”!you pay $45,000 and the tranny hoops and bumps between gears? Nope, I’m Done! Bought a 2024 Pilot Ex-L. This Pilot rides great. Quick pick up, accelerates without tranny bumping. It’s quiet, comfortable on long trips (1200 miles one way) and gas mileage is improving as we drive it. I’m at 22.6 hwy. leather is good and the different drive modes will help with the AWD. If I had a suggestion it would be a power lift gate that opens and closes with the waive of a foot. I enjoy the infotainment system thus far. It’s the Ex-L so I don’t have every option but what I’ve got…I’m happy with. I had a long session of debate with the dealership to get my price (dealerships are dying and this is why) but I’ve owned 6 Hondas and this one was a gift so! Ride On, Red Pilot!

For those shopping Grand Highlander

2024 Honda Pilot Sport 4dr SUV AWD (3.5L 6cyl 10A)
70 of 74 people found this review helpful

Main use for vehicle is long road trips for family of 6. When shopping around I looked at the Pilot, Grand Highlander and Telluride. Main reason I did Telluride was to see what all the hype is about but in my opinion it's highly overrated. So focused most on the Pilot and non-hybrid Grand Highlander. It was hard to pick between the two because they both offer really good SUVs for those looking to use all three rows and having space in the trunk. They both also did a good job at making a vehicle that had families in mind. I would say if your looking for a slight advantage in third row leg room and truck space the Grand Highlander has the edge outside of that and having a larger infotainment the Pilot covers all the bases. Ride quality is better in the pilot, the engine is more refined, quiet and responsive than the GH especially at higher speeds. The pilot also handles better, the pilot is a large vehicle but when driving it it handles more like a smaller car, in the GH I could feel the vehicles size more. The interior in the pilot is very minimalist but fells of better quality than the GH. UPDATE- One year into owning the Honda Pilot and I have no complaints. Driven about 16k miles on it mostly in highway for long trips.Car is very comfortable, handles well and has plenty of power. We did need a little bit of storage so we got a cargo box. Only real con in my opinion is the range is typically around 450 miles would have preferred something around 550 miles, but most midsize 3 rows don't offer that type of range.

Beware Drivers Seat Uncomfortable

Dan T, 07/27/2024
2024 Honda Pilot Sport 4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 10A)

Seat comfort is subjective, but I found the drivers seat in this SUV to be very uncomfortable. This surprised me since I previously owned a 2010 Pilot and currently own 2019 and 2021 Pilots, all had comfortable drivers seats. The drivers seat on the 2024 Pilot has exaggerated bolsters all the way around, with a lower center. The effect is that one is sitting in a bucket. Possibly that’s why they’re called bucket seats, but these seats are overdone and uncomfortable. After five minutes my back was hurting noticeably. I’m 71, 6 feet, 230 pounds. If you are similarly sized and considering a Pilot, be sure to evaluate drivers seat comfort.

Love the look and size BUT already having issues!!

Liked the look of the 2024 Honda Pilot over other SUVs in the segment so decided to go with the Elite trim. Liked the size and look of the interior and it works for my family of five. 2 months in and we are already having issues. Passenger side window wouldn’t go down using the driver side control panel for all four windows. Now we are having problems with the A/C not working. Took it to the dealer and they said it was because it was over filled with Freon. They made the adjustment and it worked for about a week. Now the A/C isn’t working again and it’s back to the dealership. If this keeps happening we are gonna push for a dealer buyback under the Lemon Law. Probably should have went with the Toyota Grand Highlander.

2024 Honda Pilot EX-L 4dr SUV w/Rear Captain's Chairs (3.5L 6cyl 10A)
12 of 13 people found this review helpful

I purchased this Pilot new about 9 months and have driven it 14k miles. Overall, it's a very good vehicle, but I have a few gripes, and I hope Honda is reading this. First, it drives and handles well. It's much quieter than the 2006 Odyssey it replaced. Fit and finish is typical Honda, practical and well executed with elements of upscale. The engine is powerful and smooth, and it gets a consistent 27 mpg on the highway. The Honda manufactured 10 speed transmission is solid and shifts smoothly. However, 10 speeds seem excessive, and it is busy at lower speeds and sometimes a bit slow to downshift. The Pilot has an excellent torque vectoring AWD system which is the primary reason I opted for this vehicle over a roomier minivan or a more economical sedan. Mechanically it’s been perfectly reliable other than the adapted cruise control radar unit mounted in the grill needed to be replaced twice. It now seems to be operating as designed. The front seats feel comfortable at first, but after a couple hours they are not nearly as comfortable as the seats in the Odessey that I have driven 340k miles and 18 years, or other vehicles that I currently own. The leather may be too stiff, and I wish cloth was available on mid-trim models. The second-row captain’s chairs are as comfortable, but the third row is a compromise. It may be ok for children or a couple smaller adults, but again, it doesn’t match the comfort or space as the Odyssey third row. Cargo space above the floor with the third row up is smallish, but there is additional space in the sizable well under the cargo floor. The driver information and entertainment systems are a mixed bag. Wireless CarPlay works well. The screen is big enough for me, but I wish it were integrated into the dash rather than standing above it. The keyless entry and auto start work well. The backup camera is bright. The driver instrument cluster is not so good. First, the text is smallish and not bright enough when driving with sunglasses. Once again, the 2006 Odyssey has a much more readable and more attractive gauge cluster. And Honda, why no temperature gauge? There is plenty of room for it and it provides peace of mind when towing or driving in extremely hot weather. The driver controls are mostly ok. The push button shifter took some getting used to, but I am now ok with it. I hate the auto stop-start feature and I am now in the habit of turning it off each time before driving. There may be use cases where is make sense, but where I live and drive all it does it put additional wear and tear on the engine and starting system. And then there is the steering wheel. Like most current cars and SUVs, it has a three spoke style steering wheel design. I much prefer a 4 spoke design, the kind that allows you to lay your hand comfortably at the bottom, or 6 o’clock position of the steering wheel, for long cross-country drives. Honda, offer a 4 spoke wheel like the current Odyssey and Ridgeline as a dealer installed accessory and I’ll pay for the upgrade. The lane departure system needs work. The vehicle tracks extremely well so the system thinks you don't have your hand on the steering wheel when you do but don't need to make course corrections. Overall, I hold Honda in high regard, and I am mostly happy with the 2024 Pilot. Would I buy it again? Maybe. Will I drive it a long time? Probably not.

Terrible car

I have had 2 other Honda Pilots before with no problems and drove them to almost 200,000 miles. Bought a brand new 2024 Pilot and had it for 3 months before things started going wrong. Remote start would not work - car kept running and would not shut off and was locked out of the car. Needed a part for the door sticking. All engine and other warning system lights came on. Auto lights stopped working. Car won't shut off. Have to press the start/stop button at least 10 times to get it to shut off. Been driving a loaner for 3 weeks and they will not have a part that may or may not fix the problem by the end of April. I am paying monthly car payments for a car that I can't drive. I am currently in a loaner since my new car is unsafe to drive. I do NOT recommend! And Honda customer service at corporate and dealerships has been terrible

We just bought 2024 Pilot and are very disappointed. The cabin climate system can’t keep up in the cold weather. The heated air on max only gets lukewarm and the leg area of the cabin stays cold no matter how high the heat is. We took it into the service center, and the head mechanic came out, felt the air, and immediately looked at me and said yeah that’s very cool. When they tested it though, he said it was within range, and there was nothing else they could do. My 7 year old Nissan Versa heated up quicker and warmer than this vehicle. The heated seats barely function. You have to keep them on for 20 minutes on full blast to even feel anything. If you have them on any setting below full blast, you can’t feel anything. The average gas mileage is 17.1, and that’s with more than half of our 800 miles being driven on the highway. The phone charger doesn’t actually charge the phone. It will keep the phone from losing charge, but it does not gain charge. In addition to that, it makes the phone very hot and because of that you can’t leave it on for long periods of time. This car is definitely not worth anything near the price, and it’s very disappointing that Honda is just shrugging their shoulders at all of it. I am stunned that with so many strong options in this class that Honda came out with such a subpar offering.

Trust worthy on traveling. Great engine. Steering wheel noise is annoying but it seems like common to the new Pilot. Now, I am more used to it. Not comfortable ride, but it is built like a truck.

I traded in my 2012 pilot for my 2024 pilot touring model. My 2012 was the best car I ever owned and was still a very good vehicle. They gave me top dollar for trade in. The 2024 seems to have more space. I’m 6’5” and I have plenty of room, even more than the 2012. I shopped around and found the pilot to be a very good value. Also my 2012 treated me right so I stuck with something I knew was dependable.

Lot of searching, analyzing, reading reviews —mostly Car and Driver— we settled on r EX-L 8. Cargo space for us is enough. Got it with roof rails if we want to mount a carrier. Rides pretty good and our mechanic gave it high marks. He steered us away from the Acadia, Explorer, and Terrain. We liked the Grand Cherokee-L and the comparable Highlander, but the trim. Packages we wanted priced us out. We got a good trim package with the Honda, Not much room for haggling, though. 3rd row is kids only. Just bought it.

Ok so we had it for 3 months. It’s a 24’ EXL. It’s just ok. I will break this in half and give the good and the bad. Good: More room in the middle, 3rd and cargo than anything else, it is comfortable and fairly quiet. The radio sounds good and the larger screen is easy to operate to find what you want. The BAD: It EATS GAS!!!! 18MPG average! Our pathfinder from before with same engine size averaged 21MPG. Just terrible. You would think it has power for that but no. It just kinda lumbers up to speed because the thing is so heavy. The climate controls are difficult to operate. It forces you to have the rear air on all the time every time you hit sync which I find annoying. The heat doesn’t perform well when realy cold out due to a draft from poor insulation around the doors that it can’t keep up with. The rear air lacks in its ability to circulate due to being on the console only and not in the roof like others. For some reason it has paddle shifters. Why?? They are in the way and hit your hands while trying to drive highways. Other than that it has an overall weak feel. It doesn’t feal solid or mechanically sound. It already is making clunking noises when backing out of the driveway and then going into drive. I don’t feel it will last a long time like I hoped. I should have stuck with the Toyota.

Updated review. Initially, I gave Pilot one star because its transmission was failed to be replaced and the ride on bumps seemed harsh. However, after getting used to it, I like this SUV, it has all I need to live or travel. Engine is great.. ride is good, utility is great, style is great too.

Defected part and bad quality control

I have 2024 pilot 9 months with 4.9K. I have vibration issue on some concrete roads with certain speed. After 1st oil change and inspection, tech found oil leak at timing cover which indicated the factory defected part or bad installation in factory. I never have those problems from the past and lose confidence at US made Japanese car. Beside, I think it is heavy and it needs more time to break. It mixed feeling at pilot and maybe better buying MDX instead of pilot.

Purchased my 2024 elite pilot in march of 2024. After having a very expensive repair on my Mercedes. We traded it for the pilot I like the vehicle. To my disappointment my struts are already making a noise. I’m sure they are under warranty. I do not like the back compartment. The part you lift up moves and takes some work to get it back. Unfortunately it not on some kind of hinge. I’m over all enjoying it. It has a lot of features.

Have not driven it much yet but like what I see and feel so far. This replaces our 2013 Pilot Touring 4x4 which was a great car (destroyed in vehicle accident). Replaced with 2024 Pilot Elite AWD. Getting used to the different drive selector (econ-sport-snow etc.) Lots more features, much quieter cabin than previous model.

We purchased this 2024 PILOT locally, I find that one needs to do one's homework before entering a dealership. I will not partake the FREE initial oil change at the dealer, I don't trust them! The vehicle is nice, albeit the electronic wizardry is a bit much! What happened to simple? Lots of information, learning the protocols and processes are a challenge. This SUV is one of a few that offer a 6 cylinder engine, most offer a 4 cylinder, which I felt would lack power. The vehicle performs well, the CVT seems to me like it continually shifts through the gears, like a semi tractor trailer, different from our 2016 Pilot, that we still have and love. Gas mileage is similar to our older PILOT at ~ 24 -26 MPG. The vehicle is comfortable and more aggressively styled than our 2016. The power steering is effortless. What has taken us the most time to adjust is the features that shut off the car at a stop, shimmy the steering wheel when one crosses or approaches the street lines ( inconsistent response on this, know not why). Cameras provide better visibility, mirror blind spot warnings are helpful. There seems to be more road noise, so the ride is not completely quiet. The most annoying feature is the push shift that replaced the gear shift column. I have to be very careful selecting DRIVE or REVERSE, one can push the wrong one. Several folks who own Honda complain about this, not just us. We don't regret purchasing the PILOT, it is updated and different, so there is a learning curve with the DASH, information available and sequence of processes. All and all the Pilot, with under 6000 miles performs well, no real problems. The vehicle is comfortable and rides well.

2024 White Honda pilot from a repeat buyer.

The pilot is a solid vehicle with lots of features. Drives very well, with smooth transmission. Mileage is predictable. My only regrets are in the seats, having owned two odyssey’s and still own a 2018, the 2024 pilot seats are a let down. The passenger seat is terribly uncomfortable on long trips. The infotainment system is harder to use than previous ones. The removable second row seat turns a 7 passenger into an 8 passenger which is nice. Love the looks and interior, however the carpet materials are not top quality.

Nice vehicle with smooth ride. Did not ask, nor check regarding the spare tire. After having a flat tire I became aware it's a donut type spare. My previous two Pilots had a full size spare. Not a deal breaker but I wish I had known.
