Been driving a '98 Explorer, '99 Olds Silhouette, (Pilot replaced), and my wife's '08 Tribute; what a change. Looking for something to give us driveability, comfort, roominess that could replace a minivan, but yet give us the versatility of a SUV. Enter the Pilot. After researching and driving the Equinox, Edge, Acadia, CX-9, Santa Fe, Murano, Highlander and Explorer, the Pilot just offered so much more for the value. Our first Honda, we have been very pleased. A much roomier, comfortable vehicle the Pilot is heads above the competition. Comforatable quite rider, great handling and reasonable mileage, I would highly recommend the Pilot.

I have owned my 2011 Pilot for two years now and have nothing but great things to say about it. The amount of cargo space and thought that went into this vehicle goes well beyond its truck like exterior. (Which I love) This SUV has places to store things behind every corner, and even has plenty of room when I have 8 people packed into it. IT never slips & slides in the rain or snow, and has been nothing but reliable to me since I purchased it in the summer of 2013. The only thing I have had to replace is the brake pads, but that's expected in any large 3 row crossover. Its get up and go is good, but I struggle to overtake cars on the highway without really hitting the gas pedal. Overall, I would recommend this vehicle to any family that does not want a minivan, wants a bang for there buck, and wants to ride in style. My rating for the Pilot? 10/10 best car I have ever owned.

Pilot A Great Ride

I hope I don't jinx myself.....my 2011 Pilot has been very trustworthy. I love that the seats go down nicely to give me a lot of cargo room...a great vehicle for those who need show dog transportation. The car is well insulated and keeps cool in summer and is free of outside noise. The instrument panel and tech stuff is very poorly designed and takes a bit of study to figure it out.

We looked at all the competing mid-size SUVs and we narrowed it down to the final 3: Maxda cx-9, Toyota Highlander, and the Honda Pilot. The Pilot was last on her list.(Don't know why) When the dealers gave us the cars to keep over night, the Pilot became the instant favored. The Mazda was a close second and the Highlander...well it didn't even compare. Sorry Toyota. The reason is simple. To us, the Pilot just felt like an SUV. What we mean is it drives like an SUV, it was comfortable like an SUV and it looks like an SUV. We are coming from a BMW X5 so our experience with the Pilot is not exaggerated, it truly is a wonderful car. Thank you Honda!!

Updates 6/27/16: We are up to around 60K miles now. I'm still happy with the purchase. The one disappointed piece is the fuel economy. It's just not great. However, the trade off is a heavy, sturdy vehicle with a lot of interior space. The other annoying thing is the ECO mode. This light comes on every time you are not pressing on the gas which engages only 4 cylinders instead of the 6 which is supposed to get you better gas mileage. You never really know if it's working or not and the light coming off and on is distracting. Aside from that, the vehicle has held up very well. Rock solid performer with great space. It's not flashy, but has the necessary components to make driving enjoyable and comfortable. That's all I am really looking for in a car. We purchased our EX-L with 29K miles on it. This is what you get. Solid, sturdy build inside and out. Smooth driving experience. I have not had any issues accelerating or braking. Lots of room, especially in the third row. You actually have room to put some suitcases in the back with the third row up which is something that can't be said for many SUVs. The plastic is plastic...it's not any cheaper than other vehicles. It is classy and very functional with no flash. That is what you get with Honda.

Love the Pilot. It replaced a 1999 Toyota 4Runner with 190,000 miles. What a dream. Great road presence. Love the color (Cherry Pearl). All I hear is "Love Your Pilot"! Comfortable, smooth, quiet ride. Found the MPG sweet spot, 75 MPH and set the cruise - 22 MPG is awesome for this size of a vehicle. Want better? - then buy the Highlander Hybrid.

I have been very happy with the Pilot overall. Seats are comfortable, I don't think they would be if you are overweight, I'm 6'2", 210 lbs. I don't find the ECO mode annoying, you can notice on the highway when it changes but, not after it rides the same, doesn't affect acceleration. It does have a rougher ride than I expected, more like an SUV than car or crossover. Gas mileage isn't great but you know that going in, we average about 17 mpg. The interior is nice and very functional. It is not a Lexus! To all the people complaining and comparing to other SUVs, spend the extra 10K, 20K or more and then you'll have what your looking for. Great car overall, no mechanical problems yet.

Very pleased with my 2011 pilot LX. I traded in my 2004 Honda Element for the new pilot. The element seated 4 people the pilot 8 people. The element had a 4 banger that got 25 mpg, the pilot has a 250 hp v-6, is getting 24 mpg on long trips. The pilot is smooth, tracks well, and spacious. The pilot tows my 3000 pound boat well. I like everything about the purchase. Sticker was 31,000, paid 27,000.

I have owned my Pilot for 7 months and 6600 miles. It just got the first oil change. The car performs very well on the Interstate. The MPG's are about 14.5 city and on the interstate I have experiences tanks averaging 18 up to 25.5 ( all with AC on). I have been only using Premium gas. I do not understand the large MPG variation on the interstate. It could be gas quality. The VCM engine has performed just fine without any complaint. I do notice when the engine is in 3 cylinder mode.

Bought to replace Toyota sienna. Owned two of those over 8 years. Never again. Bought for my wife but I use when taking older kids to games, trips etc. For long trips it's excellent. Great visibility, very comfortable. A bit of road noise. Good power. MPG is good, considering. I've characterized it pretty good over several trips. From Boston to central NY got 23-26 mpg @ ~75mph depending on weather, traffic. If I drop speed to 65 mph I get 27-28. Driving around NE I keep it at 60 and Consistently get high 20s. Around city it's more like 19, if I'm careful and 17-18 if not. My wife pays no attention to mpg and she averages 19 mpg over 3000 miles long term mostly city, some highway

We are expecting our 3rd child in December and neither my wife's 2010 Acura TSX nor my 2001 Honda Prelude Type SH is going to cut the mustard for our growing family. We need a vehicle that had 4WD or AWD, lots of cargo capacity, 3 rows of seats, but above all else have 3 sets of LATCHes in the 2nd row. The Pilot fit the bill perfectly. We've had it for 12 days and have already put over 1,000 miles on it. It rides comfortably, provides decent steering feedback, has tons of passenger space & cargo space. It doesn't get the best expert reviews, but look at the consumer reviews. Drive a Pilot and you'll see that it fits your lifestyle.

Had this a month now (EX-L w/NAV) and am enjoying it. Yes, there are a lot of buttons on the dash, but you have a CD changer, iPod connection, XM satellite, & AM/FM radio, so I would expect that. Fortunately, these controls are easily worked with controls on the steering wheel! Built in Bluetooth is a nice feature as is the back-up camera mounted over the lic. plate. Leather seats are comfortable and the 8-way driver's side seat is also nice. There is an issue with the moonroof not closing automatically, but I don't mind holding the button for it to close until they have a fix for it. Gas mileage is not great thus far, but I didn't expect it to be the same as my CR-V. Overall, very happy.

I drove literally a dozen different SUVs, domestic, foreign, you name it I drove it. The pilot is the best you can get, hands down. We thought we were sold on the Tahoe or suburban, or gmc and ford equivalents, but they are incredibly expensive and totally unreliable. We bought our pilot used with 44k miles on it and you would think its new. Transmission is smooth as silk and the 4x4 is second only to jeep. We take our 4x4's to the beach every year and the pilot can almost hang with the wrangler and would if it had a locker in the differential. If you complain about this truck, you are too picky and should probably buy used. My only complaints so far is the ridiculous Eco mode.

After years of hearing how everyone LOVED their Honda Pilot, we broke down two years ago and bought a 2011 EX-L with 22,000 miles on it. After 4 months, the sunroof started to leak.As soon as the 36K mile warranty ran out, transmission issues. 3 months ago, more transmission issues. Last month, brand new battery went dead 3x in a week. Took the battery back but it checked ok as did alternator. Dealership was stumped said it was fine. Left me stranded and having to call tow truck twice. Turns out - another dealership 4 hours from home where I happened to be stranded - found an A/C switch was malfunctioning causing battery drain. Can't wait to find a replacement. It won't be a Honda.

I took it on two long trips and it performed flawlessly. My wife and I love the navigation system. It is well worth the extra cost. Gas mileage could be better. I love this car.

Great alternitive to a minivan and it has 4wd (on demand AWD I guess). The only issue was the cheap tires that came with it lasted only 28k miles. It is very comfortable and can tow my 20 ft boat pretty well. Love the SUV rugged look even though it's more of a soccer mom crossover. We have had great lck with this vehicle and plan on keeping it forever.

Purchased vehicle brand new. Drives quietly, smooth and very comfortable. I'm 6'2" and fit very well in the driver & Passenger seat. Haven't tested full fuel range but I'm sure I can get a good 375 miles from a full tank. Many complaints about comfort, Fuel economy, gadgets. Perhaps if one test drove the vehicle first, they would see these faults and move on to something else. As far as Fuel, I didn't pick an SUV because I wanted Fuel economy, I picked it because it felt strong. If you want better gas mileage DON'T BUY AN SUV. Get a Camry or an Accord; Duh. No problems with braking; I don't tailgate or expect to be still doing 60 mph in heavy traffic. I'm lovin' my Honda.

Took a few miles for the VCM to settle in but after @200 miles it seems less jerky. I'm 5'11" and wish the seat went back a little further (leg room may become an issue on long trip)Will have to see how that works out. Moved from a 2000 Tahoe V8 and don't expect this to have the same acceleration or power. I am pleased with all else so far. Drives like an SUV. I've owned many Hondas in the past and hope this one lives up to the reputation of my previous Hondas. It rides great and is quiet running. Goodyear tires. Lots of room. Like the fold down 3rd row seats. I'll be towing a Motorcycle trailer soon. Will see how that works out too.

Had car for 9 years and intend to keep another 5. Recently started burning oil and local garage said this is a known issue. Previous gen Pilots had recall, this one has service bulletin. Honda knows about it, but won't fix unless it's already under warranty. I now have to pay to rebuild or replace the motor. Extremely disappointed in what was supposed to be a reliable vehicle. Switching to Toyota. The good: Style - Instruments, knobs, switches, are all specific to this vehicle, not shared. All have distinct persona of being "handsomely rugged". Boxy shape means you can actually FIT things inside without dealing with a sloping roof line. Also, the back glass opening is fantastic when the car is loaded up with stuff on long trips. Can reach in without opening tail gate. Comfort - large and supportive seats are great on longer trips - width of vehicle helps with spacious feel. Reliability - yes, things do break on it. But overall, the most reliable vehicle I've owned. Mileage - for a car this size, weight, power (250hp), full time 4wd, getting average of 21mpg is better than expected. 4wd - recent snow storm incapacitated most vehicles but Honda went through 8" of unplowed roads, even up steep hills. Note I have new Michelin Defender all season tires. The not so good: Materials - Honda used some "less expensive" plastics and the interior fit and finish is unimpressive. Cargo side panel never fit right even after having 2 dealers replace it (twice). Panel in passenger foot well dislodged and dealer told me it was made that way. Subsequently discovered it was because they broke it when changing the cabin air filter. Power - 250hp is sufficient, but weight of vehicle makes starting from standstill a chore. When car is loaded with people and cargo, you really feel a need for more power. Other notes - tech in car is very good for it's age. Has navigation which works well, dvd entertainment which was useful when my Daughter was young. Came with wireless headphones which are okay but we used them twice. Do prefer knob/button interface to tech rather than touch screen, though I think that's gone in new cars - too bad, much easier to be accurate.

My family has always owned a honda we have owned 4 honda's my pilot it great for looks and rides smooth. We have had nothing but trouble from the very beginning with the stereo and the temperature on the air and heat. The stereo has been replaced completely because all the CD's were stuck in there. Never did retrieve my CD's. The volume will not go up and down with out using the control on the steering. You cannot change the different cd's you have to take the Cd out to be able to change to the next one. The air we have had it in probably 5 times and its still not fixed. It will all of sudden blow out a gush of cold air in the winter or its not the right temperature. We have even video taped it with a temperature gage in the air. They say its because we aren't using the air correctly. Cannot get the head of the service to call us back. We got the extended warranty and its a good thing. So very disappointed in the quality of the Honda they just don't make them the same anymore and the service is really gone down.

My wife just bought it. I went for a test ride and a good first ride in it. I was pleased with everything I saw, heard and felt. I've read about sunroof issues but this is to new to tell. I drove the Traverse and didn't like it. Other reviews will talk about acceleration. Well if you want to jump off the line you should get a sports car. These are family haulers. Yes, gas mileage should be attacked by the Honda engineers. 25 to 30 highway. The technology is out there. While everyone will not be pleased, take a good test ride and shop around. You'll find the Honda fits your needs and that's what counts in the end. It's about what you require in an SUV.

Overall, we are very happy with our Pilot. Traded 2007 CRV to get more space. Also considered GMC Acadia (thought the 2nd row captains chairs would be better). Turns out actually liked the Pilot second row bench better because it is more comfortable. This SUV is very roomy inside. I also have an Audi A4, which has a quiet ride. I don't understand others complaints about road noise in the Pilot. It's quiet. Its great for family road trips and has a comfy ride; rear entertainment works great for kids (DVD and can connect to gaming system). Honda really needs to give the Pilot more power and better fuel economy to compete in this class. We get 20-21mpg AT BEST on highway.

Bought back in 2012 with 45k on it, has about ~80k now. Very reliable, all I've done is perform scheduled maintenance. Gets around 19 mpg but if driving with a light foot you can get around 22 avg. I love the ECO mode that will switch the engine to 4 cyl when driving on highways. I just the rear had A/C vents in the roof as opposed to having them at knee-level. It's a Honda, so I EXPECT it to last for years to come! Great car, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good reliable SUV. One thing that is weird that might be unique to mine is that the buttons on the radio will occasionally not work, but the volume and tune nobs work fine.

Recently purchased 2011 Pilot Touring for my wife. She loves the vehicle. Drives great, quiet inside, great technology with the NAV and voice recognition system. Contrary to some of the reviews, the seats are very comfortable and we do not notice any engine shifting when in ECO mode. The RES is fantastic particularly given the fact that the kids can operate it from the back. In fact, they can change the stations on the radio from the rear seats which saves us from having to surf their preferred channels (and when it gets too much, we lock out their controls). We have owned a Range Rover and GMC Yukon in the past and quite frankly, we are enjoying the Pilot more.

Its bigger and definitely more comfortable, excellent ride even when your in the car for more than 8 hours, quiet inside climate control keeps the inside cool. Fuel mileage isn't bad for the size of the vehicle. Entertainment system works well for all the rear passengers.

We bought our Pilot used in 2016 with around 100k miles on it. We're now up to 190k with very few problems. We did have the timing belt replaced, and had a camshaft sensor go out. We've replaced the windshield several times because of stones thrown up by other drivers, and have been through several sets of tires. We had the AC relay go out and drain the battery. This is an easy fix and the relay is available at any auto parts store for about $12. Luckily it was in the driveway when the battery discharged. The leather seats and other interior parts are high quality and have held up well. We get around 20 mpg even with the car loaded up for long trips. it's maybe not the most exciting car, but it's sure nice to have a car that's so reliable and trustworthy.

I've got the peeling paint blues

I've got an appointment to take my Pilot in a few weeks for peeling back bumper. What's up with that? I've been a loyal Honda owner for over 20 years and I've never had an issue with the paint peeling. For the most part I love my Pilot. For me it's much more comfortable then my 2007 CR-V was.

Traded an '08 RDX for an '11 EX-L 12/22/10. Came close to ignoring the Pilot after reading the editors review. We had an '05, so visited the local Honda dealer for a test drive. Bought it immediately after. Here is my take after a 1200 mile round trip from GA to FL (7.5 hrs ea way). Performance, acceleration, handling, and braking are fine. It is relatively quiet, quite comfortable, and a pleasure to drive on a long trip. We got 22.8 mpg with a new engine & cruise set @ 77-83. Center stack does have a lot of buttons; but, the layout is quite logical rendering it a non-issue. The vehicle also features outstanding reliability and owner satisfaction over the long term (check Consumer Reports).

Last November 2010 I bought the new 2011 Pilot. In the first weeks of owning the car I got a recall notice for the front wheel axle. It was fixed and now it squeaks loudly. I have owned Hondas for 20 years and I expect better. The dealership asked me to fill out a survey after I brought it in again for the squeak and they could not fix it. I filled out their online follow up survey and have not heard back. I am now very disappointed in my Honda Dealership in Louisiana. A good alternative to this car might be the Jeep Grand Cherokee…just had it as a car rental and the gas mileage was far, far better… as a long time Honda owner I am so disappointed this is my second time writing.

Pilot sometimes hesitates at highway speeds due to complexity of interaction between cylinder changes, transmission and torque converter. Pilot had been on lot for six months with 200 miles of test drives. Body had several minor dings which dealer fixed. Interior had several minor dings on hard plastic which could not be fixed. Tailgate is slightly off center. I purchased the Pilot with a $5000 discount and 1.9% financing.

Purchased 4 months ago and I absolutely LOVE my 2011 Polit! This is the perfect family vehicle. It handles like a car. Very smooth ride, sharp turning capibility (no more 3 pt turns), and great acceleration. I feel completely safe transporting may family around. All of the seats are easy to operate, even my 5 y.o. can pull the levers. The middle row can slide forward to give the third row more leg room. We have comfortably fit 6 adults & 2 kids, also 7 teenagers & 1 mom. Last weekend I drove 5 HS sized football players to their game. All of their hemlets & pads fit in the trunk area! I'd like to see the Highlander do that! I HIGHLY recommend this car to anyone!!!

This vehicle is an outstanding family car, work horse, luxury car and is a pleasure to drive. It has excellent performance, great features and is a very comfortable ride, not to mention it's reliability and the low cost of maintenance. The third row of seats, roomy enough for 3 adults, puts it over the top!

Between my wife and I we have had 5 Hondas. Gas milage in the previous four models exceeded the MPG window label. With the 2011 Pilot which is advertised at 16 to 23, I am getting 13 to 19. Owned the car just a month and had a recall already...bolts on front end needed to be tightened...wheels might come off they said!!! To be fair...I love the car. It rides like a dream and has so much room. But I will hold Honda to a high standard...I expect no more problems...if I do I will make certain to let everyone know. Honda lied about the gas milage on this car. Shame on them!

Being a previous Honda consumer I knew the resell value that Honda brings considering all the problems that Toyota was facing we chose the Honda.. I love the boxy body style, the interior design is not too bad once you get used to the layout. I DO NOT like the quality of the interior. Cheap... Styrofoam in the door jam??? What is that about?? Noise?? The leg room is great for tall people. Front and second row. The gas mileage is average for an SUV of similiar size, no surprises there. It was in B&W. Some complained about road noise. Yes, you do hear it. I was told the tires are to blame. Smooth ride though. Seats are firm, not as plush as some I test drove.

Sold my 1999 Pathfinder and purchased the Pilot. It's larger in every dimension, has full time 4WD, has 70 more horsepower, is heavier, and still manages to get better gas mileage! Car has great unique style inside and out, decent power, good braking (Edmunds review is off the mark), and a usable 3rd row - boxy design allows for headroom. No middle hump and extra width provides for 3 across comfortably. Drove on vacation 250 miles to destination (highway) - got 26+ MPG. Tire pressure monitoring saved me twice. Second row windows roll all the way down, optional built in sunshades are great, flash drive for music, hands free cell phone interface works well (clear).

had several hondas in my time so I expect great quality and got it. the Pilot has great space and features and is a sporty drive with excellent handling. i found out it shares the same platform as the Acura MDX and it's no surprise. looks chunky and big on the outside, incredible space inside and drives like a crossover. some great technology which the dealers never seem to highlight like drive-by-wire accelerator, the 3-4 cyclinder shut-off for economy, tri-zone a/c etc. got the EX at invoice - $1250 after starting out looking at the CRV, the Pilot is so much more for a few extra $'s.

I love my Honda Pilot touring. It has never left me stranded. The only thing is that I have gotten the hand rest and console reupholstered. I see in the new ones the material was updated though to be more durable and won’t rip but I love the design of the older one. I will wait until Honda makes one more square looking again. Honda is the best car I have had so far! Even the service team is awesome.

Great family car with some quirks

I have had my used 2011 Pilot EX for the seven years. I bought it used at 36,000 miles. I have since driven close to 100k miles and it is still going strong. It’s not without it’s quirks though. The A/C would put out a squeal which was repaired 20K miles ago. Now the squeal is back. I had a new timing belt, plugs, etc., at 120K miles and new struts earlier this year. Other than brake pads and general maintenance, it is a great family car. Though, I wish I held out for the EX-L w/leather seats. The cloth seats are not easy to clean and the cheap material Honda used for the drivers side armrest and center console is wearing fast. Now the kids are growing and have their own cars, I may look to trade and downsize in the next year or two.

Pilot Touring

Our second AWD Pilot (2003 and then 2011), both purchased used with very low mileage (less than 12k). The 2011 body style provides additional cu ft of cargo capacity, allowing for easier loading of larger objects. The only issues we had with the 2011 had to with both of the front wheel cowlings in the front axle. Per Honda dealer, the rather loud creaking was not a mechanical or safety issue, but would cost upwards of $1,300 to replace each one. At 114,000 miles, we are tied of the creaking, and with trade in value of $9,500, not worth repairing.

Had this vehicle for about a month now. Love it so far. Got it for the 3 rows that seat 8. It can fit our family of 5 with no problem with the 3rd row folded down which leaves plenty of room for cargo for our trips. AWD Sienna only seats 4 without third row (captains chairs) and Highlander was a bit narrower, had less cargo room and was more expensive. Didn't take to the Sorento or Traverse - which were also more expensive for the same options.

Great car to own, very fun to drive excellent road handling, very quite &smooth ride, excellent acceleration, very powerful among cars in highway, all instruments are within reach, mostly highway miles so far (with distances of 300 + miles average 19-21 mpg ( ecomode is great, ( once average 55 mpg on a down hill ( at least for 1/2 mile, just thought I can share that :)), owned a pilot exl 2004 but this one just great, for crossover lx gives many extras with lot of space, (I added chrome side bars, starter, fog lights, all season mats, roof rack) in black color lx looks great, (if you don't want to spend too much initially lx is the way to go), many extras from Honda to add (light int/wood trim, steel trim

I just turned in a leased saab suv 97x and purchased my Pilot. I purchased the LX model and was concerned I was going to miss all the "perks" of driving a luxury suv. I haven't missed my Saab at all! I love my new Pilot! It's roomy, rugged looking & very comfortable! It is also extremely fun to drive. It's perfect for my family. I had 3 Honda accords and then in 2005 purchased a Saab 95 wagon, and then in 2008 leased a saab 97. Both were complete headaches! They were both in the shop constantly! I couldn't be happier to be back in a Honda! I can hardly wait to take a road trip!

Honda Pilot Sunroof problem

After getting a lot of hassle from purchasing a Honda Pilot, the sunroof still does not work well. Dealer reset once and worked for a while now I got the same problem again: sunroof can not be closed all the way when it opened. Driving this Pilot for a month, too much noise, specially the road noise so terrible. I did a drive test again on Toyota Highlander and so much quiet. Gas mileage is not so good ~ 15 mpg in city, ~20 mpg on freeway. Well, thinking of trading this Pilot and get the Highlander. Wasted my money on his Honda.
