Honda Crosstour - It is not an SUV - it is a versatile mid size hatchback sedan

mwatsky, 03/16/2013
2012 Honda Crosstour EX-L 4dr Hatchback AWD w/Navigation (3.5L 6cyl 5A)

The typical auto industry reviews I have read of the Crosstour simply do not get it. It does not fit neatly into their ideas of a sedan, so they lump it in with SUVs and wagons, and the say it is lacking because it has less cargo capacity than square SUV designs. I spent 22 yrs driving mini-vans and full size SUVs. My kids are grown, and I could shop for what I wanted. I did NOT want the SUV, or just a smaller version of it (CR-V; RAV-4; Mazda 7 or 9; Ford Edge, etc etc.) I wanted a capable, comfortable, sporty, sharp looking mid size sedan but with the versatility of a hatch back so that when needed, I could open it up, flip down the seat backs and have the space. I got it!

Four years after owning a Honda Crosstour

As a senior citizen I have owned quite a few cars, My 2012 Crosstour is one of the best, or maybe the best, I have owned. Some reviews complain about the rear vision as it is divided into two sections and takes a little getting used to. However, the back-up camera is flawless and a great aid when scanning in back of you. I bought this car new in March 2012 and both my wife and I have been more than pleased with its economy, versatility, reliability, comfort and room. Lowering the rear seats is as easy as pulling two handles and the seats flop down. The space gained is incredible for a hatchback sedan and since we have children living quite some distances we have hauled a lot of stuff. Gas mileage is extremely good for a 3.5 L. V-6. We generally get 26-27 mpg on a trip and 20 around town. Since I do a lot of maintenance myself I find changing the oil easy enough except I find it's easier to reach the oil filter by jacking the car and removing the passenger side wheel. We now have a little over 62,000 miles on the car and the only thing we have had to replace are the rear pads and rotors (a surprise to me as I thought the front ones go first). I am disappointed that Honda is not longer making this model and I believe 2015 was the last year.

I have been driving my 6-cyl 2012 Crosstour for three weeks now. I shopped for over a year for a new vehicle. Leaving a SUV, I had mixed feelings to go down to a lower height vehicle. The mid range height of the Crosstour was the main attraction for my purchase. I have no problem getting in, or out of the vehicle. The heated seats feel great of my lower back also. I agree with other reviews on the sound system, roominess, and quietness: Excellent. My husband said it was tight. One thing I notice on two lane roads... when i wish to pass around other vehicles, I just go. No hesitation. I feel confidence in this car.

I traded my 2010 Accord EXL w/Navi with 80K miles for new 2012 Crosstour. I drive 30K a year. After 3 neck surgeries, I found I needed to sit a bit higher for comfort. I am 5"10. I tried the seats of various SUVs, vans, cars, etc. I sat in the CT and it was perfect. Right height and comfort. I already have 3K miles in 3 weeks. Mileage estimates were right on. I get 27-28 mph with the V-6 on the hwy, 22-23 mixed driving. Car has a unique style. I don't mind. Rear view camera and auto reverse mirrors are a nice plus. I purchased the cargo organizer for the hatch area. The car handles well but not as precise as the Accord. Navi is like previous Accord--easy to use.

Haggle for a couple weeks; it'll be well worth the extra effort. Walk out on 'em 3 or 4 times. You'll snag a nice "toad" and enjoy a wonderful set of 18" wheels! UPDATE: After 2 years of fun, this zippy "Toad" is still the most enjoyable vehicle to drive. Just heard the first brake squeak the other day...sounded like a rear brake. Honda did a beautiful job on this Acura TL...ummm I meant... Honda Crosstour. 5 stars all day, all year, all seasons. Update: After 4.5 years of worry-free cruising and new rear brake pads, we still love our beautiful white Acura, or rather Honda Crosstour. I am now on the official Honda bandwagon. This car is the best purchase I’ve made since our marriage 23 years ago. No complaints and no car payments!

This is by far the best car / crossover I have ever owned. I have a 2012 EX-L V-6 and its just outstanding. This is not a Accord and is more Acura than Honda. The way it rides and performs is just outstanding. The rear view did take getting use to but is not a problem for me. The seats are great and so is the sound system. What I like the most is its the best of both worlds you have the performance if you need it and the versatility. Its also luxury too. Just a well rounded crossover and unlike anything else on the road. If you drive one you will see what I mean. I would highly recommend it with V6 and 4wd.

The hatchback is perfect since I used to have a Volvo XC wagon and wanted a cargo area. I leased the car instead of bought because I had reservations about the back window. I am thankful for the rear backup camera, which is VERY helpful in the dark. However, on the highway, in the dark, it is hard to see out the back window. My son pointed out to me that while he was driving it, he liked that the headlights of vehicles behind him were NOT in his eyes, due to the break in the window line. After considering this, I use my side view mirrors more at night on the highway. I am considering buying out my lease. Gas mileage is decent, though not as great as posted, 22 most.

Wonderful vehicle. I'm a month into ownership and absolutely love this car. The build quality is spectacular, its super smooth on the highway and it excels at everything I throw at it. I drive 60+ miles a day over a mountain pass and appreciate this car every day! Its pretty decent in snow with the stock tires (snow tires coming soon). Great space for my family of 4!

Vibration Problem

It’s a very nice comfortable car but has a big problem. It shudders or vibrates at speeds between 20-24 mph and 40-45 mph. Bought it new back in 2012. Within a month or two the vibration was very noticeable. Took it to the dealer many times and they replaced many parts but none solved the vibration. I had it at the dealership so often for the vibration that they contacted the main Honda headquarters in the USA. Basically, Honda USA said that there was nothing wrong with the car. Made it seem like the problem was just imagined. But now many years later the vibration or shudder is much worse. I fear something major needs replaced and I’ll be footing the bill since the car is no long under warranty.☹️ Update: It’s now 2021 and I still have this car. The problem still persists. Love the car but hate the vibration. Feels like the car will stall. I’ll probably keep the car a few more years then trade it for something else. Update: it’s May 2022. The vibration is so bad that passengers comment on it. I’ll ask the Honda dealership where I bought it if they have any new information on vibration problems with this model.

Best car for the money. This has to have the 6 cylinder to be lovable. Honda turned their noses up on this car and it was called a Hog because they couldn’t sell it. This is the best damn car out there for the money. It’s heavy and it’s ride is fantastic. People missed out on this car because the salesman were convinced it was a dog. I could sell these all day long. The ordering mistake was not having the V6. A car this big needs a 6 cylinder. Honda missed the boat when they stopped making these. I believe this would have captured a much broader market if Honda gave [non-permissible content removed] about advertising this bad boy instead of keeping it in hiding in the dealerships.

Just recently this month traded a 2009 Honda Pilot in for a 2011 Cross-tour! I love this car, no regrets of downsizing. I notice either people love this car or want nothing to do with it. I found the car offered a lot. The pilot was just a little to big for me and I missed the car feel. the crosstour drives very nice and has a lot of upgrades in it. I bought a V-6 and the car has power. The rear window does take some getting use to but the back up camera helps a lot with that! I find the car to accommodate my needs very nicely and when I have talked to people randomly of how they like the car, they all have said they LOVE it!

I live in Colorado and was looking for a sporty, performance, all wheel drive vehicle that would be fun to drive....THIS IS IT!!! V6 is great, braking is great, and the car is comfortable with lots of room! Glad I made this choice, don't regret it for a second...(blind spots are as advertised, pretty tough, just need to be more aware).

I love my Crosstour, rides great, the acceleration is great, just a Awesome vehicle. It has a smooth ride, the ride is so comfortable, just a fun vehicle to own. UPDATE: This Honda Crosstour is Awesome 💯. The ride is great, if you put on the right tires, you can't hear nothing going down the road. The engine is so quiet, and it handle bumps great. UPDATE: Had my car 4 years now, I love it. Bought it used, but in great shape. Only thing I did, had the timing belt replace with water pump. Make sure you get that done before, or at the 100,000 mile mark. This vehicle can last for years.

My biggest complaint, With every control done by wire, the brake cancelling gas pedal control is the worst. There is a time lag from releasing the brake till the engine recognizes the gas pedal signal. Very discerning when you need quick reactions. After 5 years, the drive by wire control is still a problem for me. The car is a very user friendly. This is my wife's comment. The navigation system is the best I have seen and used. No major problems so far.

I owned a 2006 Civic and needed a larger, more comfortable vehicle. I almost bought a CRV but was attracted to the strong V6, the excellent build quality, comfort and the fact that I would be buying a car that every other person in the world had. I purchased my Crosstour as a certified Honda with 39,000 miles on it and it and I've been impressed with the ride quality, comfort, safety, and build quality. some people complain about the view when you look in the rearview mirror but I have found that after a couple of days one gets used to it. I happen to like the styling and think vehicle looks very good and to V6 engine is extremely powerful. This makes a great family vehicle and I would strongly recommend it.

Bought this car back in July of 2012. Rides like a 5-series BMW, tight, strong, very smooth. Traction control on car is EXCELLENT. Idiot hit me in rear end very hard, few scrapes on back bumper, very strong car. Great on gas too, the only jab is the power in this car sucks. But if I wanted that, I would have bought a porsche, not a Honda. Even so, it would be nice to have at least 70 more hp in this 4 cycl. For sure when my lease is up, I'm getting the 6 cycl. Great car though, 4 REAL size people can sit in this car, and I mean 6'2" 200 lbs dudes and leave plenty of head and leg room. Cudos to Honda on this car, but please, MORE POWER in 2014.

Murky back camera shoddy interior

I feel somewhat divided about my Honda Crosstour. I love the ride on my Crosstour but at about 3 years in the carpet in the rear on both passenger and driver side started to pull away i tried to tuck it back and it still pulls away regularly. It makes no because it's only me in the car for the most part. My second dilemma is my interior lights seem to have a short in them. Sometimes they work sometimes they don't . Most important problem is my backup camera. Very dark. And the backup camera in this vehicle is very very important. My car has been back to Honda numerous times and I have been told it doesn't look dark it's fine. Finally I demanded that the camera be replaced. They claimed to replace it and it still doesn't work. I have had so many near accidents because of this And still over and over I have this problem. I don't want to take it back again to be told the same thing. I am exhausted feom this situation. I would go back to the Toyota brand but I fear I will get nothing for my Honda.

Bought it new back in 2012. Loved it at first because I have owned 2 Honda Accords previous to this purchase. There is a vibration between 21-24 mph. It feels like the car is ready to stall. Took the car back many times for this problem in the first year of ownership. Honda replaced a few different parts but the vibration never went away.
