I have a 2009 civic sedan lx 5spd manual I purchased new ...336,005 miles later it has never had a single thing break (minus the a.c. somewhat recently). Mileage was always a calculated 40mpg up until it for real old and now I get 36mpg. I just had all major suspension components replaced because I hadn't ever replaced a single thing. Didn't need to...mechanic said all were in acceptable condition. I don't know what would possess ANYBODY to buy a GM, Chrysler or Ford when you can have Honda and Toyota quality. I will buy this exact same car again. Detroit cars are fine as long as you unload them before 80k and 4 years. Absolute junk beyond that. Honda is the way to go. Period. Update: 353k miles. No issues yet

Great Gas Mileage , easy to service . I do my own service , only thing that has gone out was the blower fan under the dash. Took 5 min to replace . $50 bucks ..runs perfect, now has 125K on it. All Honda need regular transmission Service , watch video and you will see how easy it is to do. In extreme conditions or super hot weather it is even more important.

Vibration at idle

Since i purchased my civic i have noticed vibration at idle worse with the A/C on. I have been to the 2 dealers about 10 times with this complaint and there has only been 1 update that did not rectify the problem. The vibration is apparent when the A/C compressor engages at the same time as the cooling fans kick-in.

I purchased a 2009 EX loaded with leather and Nav. Spending the extra money on this package is worth it! Your not just getting a navigation system but Wireless blue tooth for hands free driving, CD, various ways to listen to music either by using the XM radio, USB port to plug in to a memory stick or using whatever MP3 device you have? And yes it also has hand free navigation. Just tell it where you want to go and it will plot the course. Bottom line if you’re a techno junky you will love this system. Mileage is around 30-32 MPG combined. Good pickup and go on the freeway and car is quite at freeway speed. You should be able to buy this cad loaded for under $22,000.00!!

Wish I had never bought it

Bought this car one year ago and within a couple months I began to regret it. First, the build quality is terrible. Within 6 months parts of the dashboard came loose and/or began to rattle, the front windows make strange noises when driving with them down, and in the winter I would hear metallic grinding noises when driving in cold weather. Also, if it's been sitting for a few hours and I go to start the car, quite often it cranks for a long time, then doesn't start, regardless of outdoor temperature or how much fuel is in the tank. I bought a Honda so that I could trust it to last a long time and get me to work every day, but so far it's failed at both. This was my first, and last Honda.

I bought my silver LX-S sedan in June '10 with about 8k miles and a clean Carfax for less than $15k, which I thought was a great deal. I was coming out of a very big car (Dodge Magnum) and was considering this Civic model, as well as the Mazda3 hatchback. This is my 9th Honda or Acura product and I was expecting great things. I drive a lot...and 15 months later, this car now has 50k miles. I'm not as happy with it as I thought I'd be...mostly because I should have opted for a slightly larger car (like an Accord, Fusion, or Malibu). The reliability, however, has been perfect.

Reliable, Fun, Fuel Efficient, Cheap, VTEC yo

I own a 2009 Honda Civic EX Sedan (automatic transmission). The 1.8 Liter VTEC engine is the centerpiece of this car. The VTEC allows this engine to have two "personalities". While cruising on the highway, the engine is composed and fuel efficient. If you step on the gas pedal a little more aggressively, the VTEC solenoid kicks in and uses a second set of cam lobes that makes the engine more powerful. So, it is literally a two-faced engine that can be both fun or economical. The transmission will stay smooth as long as you change the fluid on schedule (every 30k miles). The rest of the car is also well designed, but you need to remember that the Civic is still an economy car.

I've had no problems with the engine, but everything inside this car rattles...the dash, the door panel....and it drives you insane!! Poor, poor fit and finish. Sounds like loose change is inside the door. Took to dealer and of course they drove it on a smooth road and "couldn't reproduce". Also when steering wheel is in upper position, can't see the odometer. Automatic locking everything also drives you insane when getting groceries etc. out of the trunk and back seat...the doors keep locking (found a way to disable the rear door auto-lock, but the trunk eludes me. When you close trunk, doors automatically lock...then you have to unlock them again!

This has been a great car. Bought it used at a Honda dealer. Have over 470,000 km (294k miles) and have not had any major issues. No oil loss between 13,000 km oil changes what so ever. Only complaint is the A/C don't seem to last. Would buy same again. UPDATE: Addition to my previous reviews of a 2009 Civic. Now have 611,000km (380,000 miles). Very little oil consumption, still drives great.

This is the 1st new car I have ever purchased and the 1st Honda I have ever owned. I have always respected the quality that Honda cars represent -- and now I understand why it is actually so deserved. Plus, it is just damn fun to drive. Feeling like I made one of the best choices I have ever made in my adult life purchasing my Honda Civic. I love it. (It's almost sick.)

Got this for a steal as a value vehicle had my mechanic check it over he said it was a good deal for 5K I love the 5 speed manual and the mpg is awesome has some quirks but I can't help but think this is going to last at least until 200K or 300K it currently has 120K on it and perfect clutch and shift. Dealer replaced rear drums and a strut assembly so i got this one for a steal. Update sadly I lost this vehicle due to a terrible accident in late August 2020 if I still had it I would probably be driving it.

This is my 2nd Honda Civic, and what a huge improvement over 10-yrs. Its larger, safer, just as reliable, better fuel economy & this time I went for the EX Trim vs the LX last time. The EX sedan is a very nice sedan and offers many great features as standard. The only option I wished I would have gotten was remote start. That is my only regret, so in other words, you can NOT go wrong with a New/CPO/Used Honda Civic EX sedan.

2009 Civic - Should Have Bought the EX-L

Bought it one month ago, and it's everything I was looking for in a new car. Great handling and fun to drive. Ultra cold air conditioning, very quiet engine, smoooooth transmission, excellent turning, aesthetically pleasing interior, stops on a dime. After purchasing the car, made the mistake of driving a friend's 2009 Civic EX-L. Although my cloth seats are very comfortable, the leather seats are even more comfortable, and they dress up the car's interior quite nicely. For the few extra dollars, would go for the EX-L if I could do it all over again.

I leased this car new and lived it. Unfortunately, in 2012 my employer of 10 years gave. my job away after being hospitalized 3 weeks and subsequent recovery. That caused me to have to let the car go. I loved that car and found it every bit as great as an Accord I had a few years earlier. Miss it greatly!

I got this car used with about 25,000 miles on it and it's at 62,000 miles now. Really fun to drive, nice handling, and exceptionally reliable. I've never had any mechanical problems, just regular service. It does really good in the snow if you put beefy snow tires on. The biggest problem is the paint. It's peeling everywhere and rusting. Honda said they don't cover the paint because of where I live. I've had a few older Hondas and they have all had paint issues. They are a more expensive economy car and I think they should have higher quality paint. If you get a lower end civic get better wheels put on. One pothole and the wheel will bend. Overall a really great car.

This was my first new car purchase. I was proud to purchase a new 2009 Honda Civic EX while in college and working full-time. The car was great when I first bought it. However, currently, I have 66,000 miles on it and it is literally falling apart in multiple aspects. I have the paint peeling on the drive side of the car. My muffler just rusted up completely and fell off. The "top of the line" alloy rims are a complete joke and all four have of them have started corroding and leak air. All sorts of interior paneling and weather stripping is literally just falling off of my car. COMPLETELY DISAPPOINTED in this Honda. We have had other Honda's and none have been this bad. DO NOT BUY ONE!

Terrible Car - Never again

Bought this car about 4 months ago, ready to trade it in again. This car is absolutely terrible. The AC BARELY works, I went back into the dealership and they "recharged" it, still doesn't work. The sound system, lol what sound system, you can put the volume all the way on 40 (as high as it goes) and its still quiet (and sounds like [non-permissible content removed]). The car lags a lot when you hit the gas, very slow car, can't even keep up with traffic when merging onto the highway. Probably would be better in manual. The interior design is OK, only good thing this car has going for itself. The brakes are terrible, I bought the car as a 'Honda Certified' car, I had to return it TWICE for the brakes and still squeaks.

My car is 18 months old and I have had multiple problems. First, my check engine light kept coming on. It made the car miss when accelerating and almost caused several accidents on major highway because of this. It also disengaged my cruise control, so it did not work. They told me it was not covered under the warranty, so I had to pay for repairs. Now, it is making a horrible clicking sound every time I put my foot on or take off the gas pedal. I wish I would have never bought this car. It is nothing but problems. What a waste of money.

Considering it is a brand new car, it is extremely noisy as if the windows are not completely closed. It has a very low clearance that makes you feel you are sitting on the floor and you hear and feel every grain of sand that hits the bottom of the car. The steering wheel is very small, especially for a petite person. When it is windy, I feel like I don't have a good control of the car because I cannot rest my left arm on the door as I was used to doing with my previous cars. It does not show the outside temperature. I think this feature should be mandatory for every car that is made. My husband convinced me to buy it and I regret it very much. That was my worst purchase ever.

This was the first time in my life that I bought a car brand new from the dealer. Previously I had owned an 88 Accord and a 96 Civic EX which I loved. So when the 96 wore out, I went to Honda and let high pressure sales and price influenced me to buy this car, which cost less than what my daughter paid over 10 years earlier for a Civic DX, which is a lower level of economy. However, over the past few years I've realized how that was possible: 1) Cheaper quality materials on the interior. The level of plastic is almost 100% with quality I would compare to a milk jug. 2) Cheaper engine compartment. More plastic parts than ever, including the radiator and valve cover. 3) Cheaper quality exterior, mainly a skin of metal that is paper-thin, and dents and dings and scratches very easily, plus pinholes appear when you try to push them out. There is also a lot of plastic on the body including the wraparound bumper, and the paint starts peeling off these parts after about 5 years. The paint on my 94 Ford Ranger has held up better, and it's 15 years older. This is one way Honda was able to offer a much larger cabin space but keep the weight down and fuel economy up. 4) Less sound-deadening. You hear more road noise than previous generations and the cheap OEM tires start howling like bad wheel bearings after about 30-40k miles. 5) The brakes wear out prematurely. I think I had to redo mine at less than 40k miles. I just passed 100k, and the motor still doesn't burn any oil. That's the only thing that keeps this car from being a total flop. Last but not least, the plastic strip on both sides of the roof is all one piece with the trim around the windshield, which is shot on every Civic at about the 7 year mark. Honda wants about $320 for the pair which is an amazing price gouge for something that shouldn't cost more than $60. So far there is no aftermarket replacement, so you're screwed unless you drive around like me and leave the windshield trim exposed and ugly. I wish I'd bought a Chevy Cobalt, it's a better car.

Honda owners since 99. That all changed about 3 wks ago when my wife was driving our 2 daughters to dance recital about 10 mi from our house. 2-3 mi before arriving, my wife began hearing a terrible grinding noise from the front- end. It sounded like something was dragging. It turned out to be metal on metal front brakes. No warning sign that we were in need of brakes before that night. When she arrived the wheels were too hot to touch. Next day Honda service said we needed front brakes. Duh. They said exp brake life was 15- 20k! Our 04 Pilot weighs 2x as much and we went 50k before needing brakes. Do your research on Honda Civic brake problems. We are picking up Mazda3 today. Honda lost a customer forever.

I traded in my 2007 civic EX for the 2009 version. That's how much I like these cars. It's always been my practice to buy the car that depreciates the least (even if you have to pay list), end trade every other year. I spend practically nothing on maintenance, and my cost is only minimal depreciation.

After having my 2009 Honda Civic LX-S for less than a week, I can say that I'm really happy with the purchase. The ride is smooth, so far it handles very well, the MPG are great (although I haven't filled up yet). Also, the interior is laid out very well. Everything you need and very easy to use. I'm a big fan of the black interior with the leather wrapped steering wheel in the LX-S model. I would advise anyone who buys the LX-S to buy the fog lights as an add-on, as they add a pop to the car. Also, this car looks so much better in person than in the pictures. In pictures this vehicle does not stand out, but in the road it does. Very happy with this car.

I leased this car 2 years ago because it was cheap, good on gas, has good safety ratings, and Honda is the leader in reliability. I traded in a BMW 3 series because the repairs on the BMW were AWFUL - frequent and expensive. Except for the BMW acceleration and handling, I like the Honda better in every way. It has no rattles, no check engine lights, and no problems of any sort in 2 years. On long trips I get over 40mpg (non-hybrid) on regular gas at 75mph with the air conditioning blasting. It's comfortable as long as you're not 6'5" tall. I'm actually buying it before the lease is up and just keeping the car.

I've always liked the Honda Civic. It's got great looks and the mag tests say it sets the standards for other small cars to match but I'm disappointed. The road noise in the cabin is just horrible with the Civic and for me it's really a big distraction that's keeping me from enjoying this car. Too much gear whine from the drivetrain too. Road noise in the cabin is the biggest flaw with this car. I like the rest of the car, but it's not really any better than the other cars in its class and you pay more for a Honda and get less features for your money compared to say a Toyota. The Civic is a nice car, but it's a noisy car and pricey for what you get. Do you homework before you buy.

I "traded down" from a Titan and 1 year/ 22k later, I am very pleased. I average 30 MPH in mixed driving, 36 MPG on the interstate at 80MPH with AC. The car handles VERY well. It's smooth with minimal body roll. In dry weather, it can stick to a 25mph cloverleaf at 55mph, no sweat. I don't like the sound of most 4cyls, but the R18 actually sounds pretty good. Do not expect this car (1.8 + auto) to be a rocket. It will move if you mash it past 3.5k, but at a serious fuel cost. There is minimal rolling resistance, so it is easy to glide up to and hold cruising speeds to save gas without any "hypermiling" nonsense. The interior is generally ergonomically correct, and can accommodate 4 adults.

We have only owned Hondas for the past 12 years because we don't want the hassle, headache and maintenance woes associated with other vehicles. Honda has not disappointed. We recently purchased the new 2009 Civic LX-S to replace our 1997 Civic as a work/commuter car. In reading other reviews, I am surprised to see complaints like "no lighted vanity mirrors," "no keyless entry for the trunk," etc. Are we missing the boat here? This is excellent for what it is, an economy car. If you want a car for under $19,000 with reliability, great fuel economy, look no further. If you want heated seats with your keyless entry, buy something else and stop complaining.

Although I just bought the car last year, I have had it at the dealership to have numerous flaws repaired or replaced under the warranty: (1)windshield replaced due to distortions; (2) door handles and side mirrors replaced due to the lack of quality paint job; (3) front and rear bumpers painted due to lack of quality paint job; (4) the regulators in the front doors had to be replaced when the windows stopped going down all the way; and (5) the moldings that cover-up the front side airbags show gaps when it should be flush mounted.

Bought this as an efficient second vehicle and find myself using it every time I go out the door. Easy to handle, plenty of zip, quick to park and not one issue in 10,000 miles. Plenty of room for my 6'3" 250 body.

Some minor quirks for a fantastic car

Hondas just seem to get better and better. I do however have two minor comments regarding my new Civic. First, the accelerator's new throttle-by wire technology performs well, yet the feel of the accelerator is awkward to me. The pedal is hinged from the floor and I find it a little uncomfortable situating my foot at times. The other item relates to the transmission. The automatic tranny seems confused at times whether to stay in second gear or revert to first when executing slow turns or "California stops". This confusion can at times result in an abrupt shift of the gears. Other than that, not much to complain about. Hats off to Honda for building yet another great car!

After 6 months the Civic is almost exactly as expected. Reliable, great mileage, solid build. There are a few things that will drive you nuts. If you are tall, the parking brake handle sticks up and you will whack your leg. It is impossible to see any part of the outside of the car from the inside so for a small car it is more difficult to park then you would expect. The rear seat is not divided so you have to fold down the whole seat - a difficult task with the release mounted in the trunk. The key has become the joke of my department at work. It is huge (gold plate it and it could be the key to the city). It also costs over $100 to duplicate. So solid car with some design issues.

Not expensive. GREAT gas mileage. Love the look. Roomy interior and trunk. Rear passengers don't bump their head on the top of of the car when going over a speed bump, unlike other small cars. Great sound system, and just enough kick to pass up the "overly cautious" driver in an instant.

I've had this car for almost 3 months and it's been great! The car is fun to drive and averaged 41 MPG on long distance highway drives. Combined city/highway has been about 33MPG. I'm really impressed with the performance and the looks of the car. I'm happy with my switch from a corolla to a civic and I expect the same long life and dependability that my Toyota had.

Having been a GM fan for years, I see what I have been missing... I am impressed with this vehicle I have had it for a week now, and I can't stop driving it. It makes me want to drive, is fun to drive, gas is great! You can't go wrong with this choice, in my opinion. At least test drive one and you'll see what I mean. Good resale value as well. Lease rates are amazingly low compared to other Japanese automakers.

Excellent car to own as a second vehicle. Extremely reliable, excellent mpg, easy to drive, park and maneuver around traffic. Low low maintenance just the norm oil change tires battery brakes wipers etc. Money saver for those close quick in town trips with high mpg. Keeper till it falls apart which at present has no sign of happening anytime soon.

Concerned about going from a V-6 to a 4 cylinder. Not anymore. A zippy little car with great stopping power. Urban Titanium color gets great remarks and some say the body style looks European. I like the double decker dashboard. Can't be accused of telling a police offer I didn't know how fast I was going.

All I hear about is Honda quality and reliability. So I decide to pick up a Civic for the supposed worry free experience. First night I get the car, I hear a squeaking sound from the driver side front wheel area on any road imperfection. Take it for service, and I am told they had to inject foam into an area between two body panels that were rubbing against each other. Pick it up the next day, and notice a rattling sound from the rear while turning on way home from dealer. Take it back to test drive with master tech. While doing so with tech, I lower window, and hear a squeaking sound. Tech laughs, I curse. All of this before 90 miles on car. First and last Honda.

I previously owned a 1.8 Turbo Volkswagen Jetta that had some serious pep for a 4cyl engine. However, the thing was falling apart and overall my experience was poor. I was drawn to the Civic because of its reputation for reliability, fuel economy, and its nice design. After nearly 3,000 miles on the car, I'm happy with my purchase. It's not as much fun to drive as the Jetta, but the 5 speed manual offers some excitement and better all-around control over the car. I ended up going with the EX-L because on the 2009's it's the only version that offers stability control (VSA). Also, it's worth noting that I'm relatively tall (6'4"), and I fit very comfortably in the driver's seat.

Bought mine pre owned with 60k miles back in 2013 and just sold mine December 2017 and it’s the best first car ever to own. No major problems other than my coolant hoses blowing but that’s it! I’ve done the oil changes myself using Mobil 1 full synthetic and k&n oil filters and it ran like a champ! I was modded as well with the eibach pro kit suspension, spec d tuning exhaust, momo steering wheel, and injen cold air intake. I did about 7 road trips in that car and ended up selling it with 132k I loved that car to death but I upgraded to an S2000 now. The only complaint was power 1.8 I4 I believe was pushing 140hp many other cars were pushing slightly more but the car did rev up to almost 7k with a very light vtec so you’d really have to drive it hard to make it some what fun

The Energizer Bunny of Cars!

I love Hondas because they are fun to drive and don't break. Over the years I've spent money on this one for oil, tires, tune-ups, cabin air cleaners, wiper blades, one transmission fluid change, and a driver-side door checker (the gizmo that makes the door stay open when the car is on an angle). I trust the car to work, and it has never let me down. The instrumentation is awesome, the seats are comfortable, the sound system suits me, and the visibility is great for a small car. It has lots of cubbies and storage inside and the trunk is roomy. My only two "dings" involve (1) cabin noise (it could be quieter) and (2) figuring out where in the hell the front of the car is located! The aerodynamic shape means the driver can't see the front of the car hood AT ALL. I solved this by driving around with a peacock feather inserted between the license plate frame and the bumper for the first two years. It was elegant looking and, more important, it showed me where the front of the car is! Nevertheless, I'm sure I have ground off the entire air dam under the front bumper/engine area as it is just too close to the road, parking standards, etc. Since it has not seemed to affect my gas mileage, I'm not going to worry about it. All in all, this is a GREAT little car. With so many on the road, parts and service are easy to come by if needed, and it doesn't attract attention (no speeding tickets despite a heavy foot). I've camped for five days with this car, including a spouse, a tent, an air mattress and foam pad, food, firewood, gear, etc. The sunroof option is perfect for hauling the odd long piece of lumber or PVC; I even managed to invert a 12-foot ladder and drag it home. This car is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Did I mention it is fun to drive? :)

My wife and I just purchased our Civic DX-VP yesterday. I had looked at a Toyota Yaris as my commuter car, but was able to buy the Civic for just $25/month more than the subcompact Yaris (comparing 60 month loans), and the Civic is a MUCH better car. The DX-VP does not have power locks, but it does have air conditioning and a good sound system, as well as power windows. This car is all Honda. Great styling, great engine, great historic reliability for the Civic sedans. I expect to be driving this car 15 years from now.

Everything You Need for the Price

I selected the LX-S based on the options that comes standard on it as opposed to the LX and even some options not on the EX (leather-wrapped steering wheel). I wanted a spoiler, alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel and Automatic Transmission in a 4 door. The LX-S was tailor made for me. I originally was looking at a Fit based on price, but the LX-S was quoted lower than the Fit. I couldn't believe it. Several hundred below Edmunds TMV. Car feels very solid. Not very powerful, but I'm looking for fuel economy and couldn't care less about power. Backseat is large enough for my 2 car seats. Trunk is adequate. Based on price + mpg + reliability I'm looking forward to racking up the miles.

Nice looking car, like the led tail lights and digital dash, but I'm 5'6 and smash my shin each and every time I enter this car. Poor design there, seats could be more comfortable, lots of rattles and squeaks and idles rough at red lights. I have the basic VP model, and although it features power windows, there are manual locks and mirrors! This was almost $19k at my dealer. I wish I had done more research on other cars before leasing this. It's really not worth the $$ at all.
