Bad Rear Control Arms

kgoz, 06/23/2014
2007 Honda Civic EX 2dr Coupe (1.8L 4cyl 5M)

The 2007 Civics have been involved in a class action lawsuit involving the rear control arms. If you purchase a used civic make sure the rear control arms have the letter "C" stamped on them, otherwise you will rapidly wear out tires. The fix for this problem costs several hundred dollars (and Honda WILL NOT PAY for the repair). Fuel economy is excellent.

Had my 2007 EX coupe for 80,000 miles and 6 years. I've learned that honda reliability can be counted on for their recalls. If you get a recall, it will occur. Got recall on bolt failure on water pump pulley. Shortly after bolt broke, the pulley fell out of the engine bay, and destroyed a belt. Luckily, no other damage and was fixed for free. Got a recall on visor failure and it failed and replaced free. Got a TSB on motor mount failure, motor started slamming into chassis replaced mount at my expense. In the fifth year the paint on the roof has rapidly oxidized under the clearcoat and looked terrible. Got a TSB on that and Honda repainted civic for free. Finally, learned of TSB for engine block failure. Block could crack and leak coolant. Fix is to replace engine. Honda extended warranty to 10 years to cover it. I quickly sold it while warranty was still in effect. I liked the Civic. Honda was quick to recognize and fix problems. The potential engine block problem was the last straw.

Superb little car!

This is a superb car! It's very powerful for that comparatively small engine. Both the interior and exterior are attractive. Buttons/controls are well placed. The interiors are very spacious and so is the boot....I didn't expect the boot to be so big considering that its a coupe. Honda has done a great job in making a compact yet spacious car. Overall this car drives very smoothly and gives good mileage too! I'm happy with my experiences. A smart, powerful, economical car is how I will summarize it. Go for it!

This is my first time driving Honda and I am a guy who has owned Lexus, BMW and other domestic brands before. For this price, this is an excellent car in terms of handling, mpg, comfort and maintenance. I would highly recommend this car to all age groups. I drive about 200 miles per day and this is a very fun to drive car and the best choice for budget minded people.

I will never own another Honda. I own a 2007 with 77k miles. 1 owner, all routine maintenance done. The engine failed. Coolant leaked into the engine, the head is completely warped. This relates to a known issue but the dealership claimed the block wasn't fully cracked so they won't cover a cent of the replacement. Needing a new engine at 77k miles? That is unacceptable. I am completely appalled with the treatment I have received and will never own another Honda.

This car has shown me alot in my couple of months of driving it. I was looking at the 350z, and the rx-8, but chose this for the price and fuel economy. Its doesn't compare to the performance those cars will give you, but the 35 mpg average I get more than makes up for that extra pep, The interior design is great; I didn't think I would like it, but when I get into other cars I miss my design. The ride quality is great, my g/f has a scion tc and I absolutely hate the way that car drives now. This Civic is amazing I never thought I would like it so much, I was planning on selling it when I graduate college in a couple years, but I don't think I want to get rid of it anymore money well spent

This is my third Civic, which I bought for the looks. What a mistake. Honda cut too many corners. At least they are fixing most issues, but I'm tired of taking the car to the shop. Here are my issues so far. Visors - Honda Replaced Control Arms/Tire Wear - Honda Replaced Motor Mounts - I paid for this Paint going bad - Honda will fix the hood and fenders but not the roof. Water Pump Pulley - Honda Replaced Engine Block Crack - Honda Replaced My other two Civics were great, but this one has been terrible. These repairs were made in addition to replacing the terrible Firestone tires and Honda battery (those both have always been bad). Unfortunately this will be my last Civic.

This is an excellent car. No doubt about it, Honda knows what they're doing with this car, well thought out and put together well. Very comfortable car to drive, easy handling, and supportive seats. A little road noise, but for a small car it is refined in so many other ways, who cares. Open the sunroof, and turn on the tunes. Also, the back seat is tight getting in and out of this coupe, but hey I'm driving so to bad for those back seat drivers. Economical on gas, and oil changes every 3000 miles, never a problem with this car. Owned almost a year now. It's a cool car, no regrets here.

At 16,000 km's, the transmission in our new 2007 Civic broke down. Honda claimed that this was due to abuse! My wife and I have driven manual cars for many years....we are both in our 50's and do not abuse our cars. Honda refused to accept any blame and we were forced to pay a $4,000 repair bill. We had no support from anyone at Honda - not the dealer or Honda Canada. Would they consider cost sharing the repair bill or giving us a break on the parts or labour cost? NO! Our lease is now up - the Honda dealer called to see if we wanted to lease another Civic....Are you kidding me?? Fool me once, shame on you....fool me twice....shame on me! Never again.

When I bought the car new I loved it! sporty styling, feel, and supposedly good mileage, but never more than 26vmpg. It turned out to be the worst car I've owned.@ 2k miles interior trim pieces were falling off. 1st oil change alignment was off and my tires were shot! Honda wouldn't cover it! 20k brakes were shot. A/c has never worked correctly, 7 times to the shop and still goes out! at 30k miles dealer didn't tighten the oil plug and destroyed motor, had to fight to cover it. Now @ 40k miles interior is falling apart, rode noise is horrid, seats are terrible for long drives, jerks when it shifts, and Honda care line is a joke, they don't care. I filed under lemon law. My last new Honda.

The EX Coupe is not only technically sophisticated but is aesthetically pleasing both inside and out. The i-VTEC engine delivers more than adequate acceleration and its 1.8 liter size provides excellent mileage. Moreover, the content in the EX is astonishing for the price. It is like having a luxury car--a mini-Acura--for under $20K. All the convenience items are there, and some you don't expect, like speed sensitive stereo volume control and speed sensitive intermittent wipers. And despite some carps, the dual tier dash is a brilliant design. Speed can be monitored without deflecting your eyes too far down and yet the tachometer is mounted dead center, where it should be. FABU!

The '06-'11 Civics have many little issues. Bad quality paint & clear coat. Buzzes and rattles in the interior. Auto transmission is lazy to down shift, too eager to up shift. Window switches are tricky. Odd placement of hand brake. Lack of head room They have some pretty bad major issues too. The cost of labor to replace the starter can exceed the cost of the starter itself. Rear trailing arms can fail. Engine mounts prone to failure. '06-'08 and some '09 Engine blocks can crack, Honda may not replace for free, even though they say they will (see Honda's Technical Service Bulletin 10-048). Brakes are also sub-par compared to what they could be for the car's MSRP.

Significant problems; I'll never buy another Honda

There are glaring problems with this car and Hondas in general. In fact, they had to extend the warranty on many parts. After only a few years, one engine mount broke, the clear coat flaked, and the paint cracked. The CVT transmission lags, which could cause an accident if you're expecting an immediate response from the gas pedal. To top it off, they lied about the MPG when I bought it in 2007--originally boasted at 41 highway, at best I get in the low 30s highway. Bottom line is there are better quality comparable cars, and because of the poor workmanship of this model (and Hondas in general for the past 10 years or so), I'll never buy another Honda.

I bought my Honda NEW in January 2007. Over the last several months, my car has been in the shop several times, and I have missed four days of work due to the vehicle being incapacitated by mechanical failures. The list of failed parts is long: 1. Sun Visor split apart 2. Battery #1 3. Battery #2 4. Battery #3 5. Air compressor relay 6. High road force on tires 7. Air condenser (mysterious road pebble) 8. Tensioner bolt 9. Tensioner belt 10. Water pump 11. Water pump pulley 11. Rear suspension arm 12. Air condenser (another mysterious road pebble). That's 12 failures too many.

Cracked Engine Block. Honda Doesnt back product!

I have a 2007 Honda Civic EX coupe with only 99k miles and due to a manufacturing defect now has a cracked engine block. Honda has a service bulletin #10-048 which states the 2007 Civic and other years have manufacturing defect. My civic started over heating on Dec.25th 2017 on the way out to my families house for Christmas and I had to pull to the side of the road due to the overheating and smoke we saw coming from the engine. After looking under the hood I saw there was no coolant in the reservoir and I couldn't detect a coolant leak. The next day Dec.26th 2017 I replaced the thermostat on my civic presuming that the thermostat was sticking and coolant was not circulating. That was obviously not the case because yet again the next day Dec.27th 2017 it overheated and I had to pull to the side of the road and noticed a severe coolant leak coming from the engine block. When I got the car home I did some research and noticed a Honda service bulletin (above) and saw we were not the only ones having this issue. We called American Honda and they started a case for us and recommended that we take it to our local Honda to be inspected further. We made a appointment for the inspection and after Honda inspected it they diagnosed it with a cracked engine block. This is do to their faulty defected product. Honda should stand behind their product and fix the issue. This car was meticulously maintained by my local Honda and has been in the family. We were never notified of this bulletin or else we would had brought our civic in sooner before there supposed extra 10 year warranty expired. It shouldn't matter how many years Honda knows this is a ongoing issue and it will continue to happen if it doesn't get taken care of the right way. This could potentially be a dangerous situation and I believe Honda needs to step up.

Not happy with Honda

I bought this car used with 32,000 miles on it and now own it with 96,000 miles. This is a good looking car and it is fun to drive. I will give it that...but...this build quality and reliability is horrible. The rear control arms ate away two sets of tires, and am currently waiting on Honda to reimburse me for them. Once on a road trip, some sensor failed and I was unable to go faster than 50 miles an hour. Very unsafe. The dome lights work intermittently as does the third brake light. I just had to replace the motor mount, as that has failed and caused extreme vibrations and loud noises when I shift from park to reverse. The road noise is also very loud. I am very disappointed with Honda.

Great fuel economy, only been thru one tank of gas, and average was 33.5 MPG. Handles well. Wish the LX had better wheels, but not at the $2000 price for the EX. My kids think it is the greatest, they like riding in it much more than in the minivan (me too). The interior is great, I love the fact that the CD player will also play MP3s and WMAs. Takes some getting used to the speedometer display, it can be too bright at times, and if adjusted not bright enough at other times, but it is very easy to adjust. I am tall, and on the first day I owned it, I hit my knee on the emergency brake handle while getting in, it took part of the paint off of the button, but no big deal.

This car is for my wife, she wanted an automatic 2 door that was fun and easy to drive. After test driving Mazda’s 3, it was obvious to us that the Civic was a better product, we put our order in for an Atomic Blue EX with Navi and got it 2.5 months later. This car is very nice, the short wheelbase is noticeable, but not annoying. The suspension and steering is tight and precise. It is very easy to drive, and backup, blind spots are minimal. The blue lights of the split dash are easy on the eyes, and the navigation system is simple to use and operate. This car has made me consider a Si for myself.

DEPENDABLE!!! Handles like a race car. Routine maintenance is EASY!!! Important - Easy to change oil and filter, easy to change tranny fluid, easy to change coolant. They made it easy to do the routine maintenance and that is incredibly important! That way it gets done! Changing the tranny fluid is actually easier than changing the oil. Coolant changes are just as easy. They were thinking when they designed this car. Quick, easy maintenance means it lasts a long time! I love my 2007 Civic Coupe. It is something we can always count on. The only negative is snow/ice traction. Everything else is amazing. I'm expecting a million miles on this car and that is a realistic goal with proper maintenance.

Before you purchase an 07 Civic, I highly recommend looking up the TSB's on this model. I know, I know. The car is dazzling, but do your research! Defective rear control arms will cause the car to destroy tires. A defective motor mount will give out on you causing severe engine vibration. Visors have to be replaced every summer due to falling apart. Engine block develops a crack after 50k miles. Brake fluid leaks into hub bearings causing it to fail. The plastic interior scratches and breaks easily. Steering wheel's foam/rubber falls apart. Car dent's very easily as well. Some serious problems with this model. I call shenanigans; this car is a lemon (a very pretty lemon).

We purchased this car under the impression Honda is a good car. Never again! Even the company was horribly rude, worse than non-helpful- accusatory, and defended their illegal actions of their dealerships. Our civic has since 20k had steering problems, shifting problems, battery problems, engine issues and other parts having to be replaced by notice of recall or failed. However the dealership which did the repairs failed to properly document and repair saying the noises, shaking, and hard shifting are normal. The problems have constantly gotten worse and now that the car is over warranty Honda insulted us plus refusing to repair the car! Go get a Hyundai or other car with a 100k warranty.

I didn't do much research on this car before I purchased it, however I wish I had. I have had my radio serviced 3 times! It just shuts off, or doesn't start when I start my car. I would have to restart my engine at red lights to try and turn it on again. Another serious issue is BLIND SPOTS!!! In both the front, and the back. Horrible vision, must always readjust passenger seat after passengers get out so I can see. Car slide out a lot, and forget about trying to keep it on the road in the wind. Very disappointed, called Honda yesterday about a trade in!

I have owned my Civic EX Coupe since Sep '06. This is an excellent car for the daily commute as it gives a decent MPG but this is completely dependant on your driving style: If you drive agressive then kiss the MPG goodbye but if you drive more mellow then you'll be very pleased. It's a bit stiff which is normal for Honda. The handling is really good for a front wheel drive. The part that always irritates me about this car is: 1) I am always thirsty for torque, and 2) The transmission is sometimes a bit lazy to shift down. So when you take it on a trip, when you get to the hills, you can't use cruise control at all; the tranny is constantly downshifting gasping for torque.

Handles great. I really have no complaints whatsoever. However, I wouldn't buy this car if it was a lower end model. The reason why I love this car is because its ex w/navi. I've seen the lower end models w/o navi and its nothing special compared to the ex.

I bought the car 2 days ago,I own a rsx- s as well, which is also a great car, but i needed a car with good fuel economy since i drive 140 mi. round trip to work most days. I like leather but the cloth seats are so comfortable i could fall asleep. the clutch works great and it shifts smooth as well. I am used to a short throw transmission, but the EX is fine. The drive by wire throttle system takes some getting used to, i am not used to the rpms "hanging" while i shift, but you get used to it. so far I'm at 220 mi, and i still have half a tank! I'm 6'3 and its hard for me to see the speedo because my hand is in the way, so i adjusted the steering wheel lower.

This is my 5th Honda. Who knew the next gen would be out of this world? This is my 2nd Civic EX, and this 2007 red car turns heads, my son says the car is too cool for me, (I think he just wants it pristine when he starts to drive) and it handles like a dream. The acceleration is so smooth, I can't believe I resisted AT's all these years. The corners are no problem, I stop on a dime, good thing cuz I don't want the cops to see me! I sit and gaze at this car when it is sitting in my driveway. And I am pleased.

Incredibly Disappointed

I got this car when my 2001 Civic EX coupe was totaled- I loved that car. I hate the new one. Terrible visibility due to blind spots, both in back of car and front- can't merge, or see pedestrians trying to cross the street. I thought I would get used to it, but no- even large SUVs have been in my blind spot in the interstate. The interior of the car is cheap- tons of scratches and I'm very careful. The paint is awful- tons of dings and scratches, and I live in the city- the car looks worse after 6 months than my 2001 Civic did after 6 years. Floor mats are the cheapest things ever- why the foam backing? I miss my old car so much, I'm thinking of trading my '07 for an '01!

Bought the car on Dec 20, 2007. I was actually planning on purchasing the galaxy grey one but, for some reason the black just completely caught my eyes. I've had the car for a couple of months now and can honestly tell you guys that there are no problems whatsoever to report. This is my very first car and the experience by far has been absolutely wonderful. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone!

I've had this car for two months and it is just getting better and better. It's really fun to drive. I like the its stability on the road and inside design that makes you feel comfortable. I think there is some exaggeration on the gas mileage. The average is around 31 mpg instead of the 38 mpg ( talking high way )

Our Civic came with leather and Essenza tires and pro max rims, and it rocks. We love this sweet machine and are getting about 35 mpg on top of great looks.

I am very happy with my new honda civic. It is fun to drive. Although the steering is light,it is precise, Plenty of leg room and for a small engine, suprisingly peppy. You can really toss this car around and have fun with it. Don't believe anyone who says the car does not have enough power. This small engine loves to rev.

I owed this car for 10 years. It was purchased new and primarily driven by my mother and brother. The dealer honored issues that were well out of warranty like: re-painting the car twice and replacing the sun visors. It has been a great car. We've driven it 86K miles

Don't buy this car for the gas mileage. My car is getting 19 MPG 50% Highway 50% City driving. Dealership says not their problem, Honda of America says not their problem either even if the actual mileage is half the estimate it is not their problem. Extreme glare from the dash on the windshield. IF you buy this car you better be lucky, some get 35 MPG some get 19 MPG and if your one of the lucky ones to only get 19 Honda doesn't think there is any problem. I owned a 2003 KIA Rio Cinco before this and it got better gas mileage then this car, cost $10,000 brand new and was only rated at 25 city 32 highe .. and it got better. Do NOT buy this car for the mileage you will be sorry

This car needs new tires due to a factory defect, it has always bounced down the road, now, we know why. It now needs a rear upper control arm kit. The company will pro rate the tires, using some sort of formula, based on tire depth and mileage. We were told by our dealer that there is no pro-rated money allowed based on the formula. The car is dangerous. I feel let down by Honda.

This is a great commuter car. However the only downfall is the light back end makes it slide in wet or slippy conditions. Runs as good now as the day I bought it. It does like to eat back tires so rotate them and service your car (i.e. oil and rotating tires) no big expenses yet. IT'S KINDA A TIGHT FIT FOR A 6FT 200LB guy but it makes up for it at the pump...
