Pretty Bummed Out

Hopefully all will get resolved...coming out of a Tahoe with 110,000 miles and excited to get into my 2020 Sierra Denali 1500 Carbon Pro with the Duramax Diesel. At this point, I have had the car 2 weeks and it has been back at the deal twice, this time going on 4 days. First issue was a coolant sensor that set off an engine warning and the second problem is car wouldn’t start due to dead battery. Apparently 4 open recalls on the 2020 and I guess my dealer didn’t take care of them? They still can’t figure out what is draining the battery. Truck has about 900 miles on it. Now have the feeling of “what’s going to be messed up?” Every time I press the start button. Certainly takes the enjoyment out of owning this physically beautiful truck. When it works it is an absolute joy to drive and it is the best looking truck on the road....all that said....I want it gone.

Good but not class leading

2020 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali 4dr Crew Cab 6.6 ft. SB (5.3L 8cyl 8A)

Just put 8500 miles in 7 weeks on a new 2020 Sierra 1500 Denali with the 3.0 Duramax. Overall mpg was 24 with highway speeds at 75 to 80 mph. Driving at 55 mph in construction zones netted 40 to 50 mpg. Fantastic engine. Ride is smooth. Seats are comfortable. Easy to drive all day. However.... the navigation voice input is useless as it can't recognize most requests. Navigation also will try to send you down a goat path which might be on the maps but is not a real road. And worse it still has the 2016-2018's occasional problem of saying go right when the direction is really left, and vice-versa. Expect to always have to use Apple Carplay as backup for finding stuff and getting good directions. Also the screen is small and can't adequately display maps and music info at the same time. Tailgate is very heavy, as is its subdoor which is tough to close when the gate is down. Truck came with an electrical cable hanging from underneath that if it had caught on something would have torn it away - but was easily re-positioned to tuck it out of harms way. Heads-up display is nice, but the navigation map doesn't fully translate to it, just arrows and road numbers. Radio when it starts in a garage says no satellite signal message which doesn't go away until the channel is changed in the clear. DEF usage about 1 gallon/1000 miles. The 3.0 Duramax starts quickly and idles at 300 rpm and is almost unnoticeable at stop lights. Definitely suggest getting a start/stop eliminator since otherwise it resets every time the engine starts. Lane keeping is weaker than the 2016-2018 models, and severely lags other manufacturer's capabilities to self-drive for extended periods. Adaptive cruse control uses camera and shuts off when driving into the sun, but the standard cruise can still be used - a radar unit would eliminate this problem. Interior has a lot of plastic on the doors and dash that scratches easily. Sunroof is still only a small single pane instead of dual pane. It is a nice vehicle but would be fantastic with technology upgrades, higher interior quality availability, and some luxury options, e.g. dual pane sunroof, rear window shades, 20 way seats. Note that Model selected was for the 5.3L, not 3.0 Duramax as Edmunds doesn't list it, but this review is for the 3.0 Duramax.

Technology / infotainment system not so good

Howard, 02/14/2020
2020 GMC Sierra 1500 SLT 4dr Crew Cab 4WD 5.8 ft. SB (5.3L 8cyl 10A)

Thought I was upgrading when I traded my 2017 Sierra 1500 crew cab with the premium plus package for this 2020 Sierra with same equipment package. I was wrong. There are indeed upgrades, however, the technology / infotainment system were a big step backward and has me regretting this purchase. Their system doesn't work well with at least some phones ( Iphone xs with latest operating system and 2 year old top tier Samsung ) when paired via bluetooth. GM has removed their built in messaging app so the only way to receive text messages through their system is to plug in / tether your phone and use Apple Car Play or AA. One can send text messages using voice commands but not receive, or even be notified of incoming messages when connected via bluetooth. Their system also turns the volume down on the phones which causes problems. Many pages of information / complaints regarding these issues are available by doing a search. Apparently impacts 2019 and 2020 GM products. I don't know why this isn't mentioned in all of the reviews since it would be a deal breaker for some. There are other issues / omissions on the 2020 that were on my 2017 that I find annoying such as no overhead console to store glasses, moving the wireless phone charger from the console lid to the front console losing half of the console storage area, ( which is ironic considering the phone must be plugged in for the basic phone functions to work ) and lights visible to the driver on the outside door mirrors showing when the turn signal is engaged. There is a lot to like with the 2020 Sierra but mine is an expensive vehicle with many top tier options yet the infotainment interaction with the Iphone is an 8 – 10 year step backward and shows how out of touch GM is with the consumer.

Bought the 2020 Sierra AT4 and it has been nothing short of amazing. So much tech that the truck nearly drives itself. Got this with the new 3.0L Diesel and averaging 23 MPG out of the gate. Highly recommend if you are looking at a new truck and like the color matched look.

Recently upgraded from the 2018 Sierra SLT to the 2020 Sierra AT4. I have been nothing but impressed and surprised with everything this truck offers. When I drove off the lot and got on the highway I immediately noticed how quickly I got up to speed (using normal driving mode, not sport) and how quite the cabin was. There was traffic on the highway and I remember driving to the dealership in the 2018 with the same amount of traffic and I had to raise the volume on stereo to hear the person I was on a bluetooth call with. I called the same person in the 2020 AT4 on the same highway and I could hear them perfectly and at a normal volume. They also said they could hear me better. The ride has been crazy smooth as well. I've been driving down the same roads I did with the 2018 and this AT4 blows it out of the water when it comes to ride comfort. The 2020 comes with the 10-speed tranny which gives the AT4 the extra towing capability which I need to pull my 35' travel trailer with more confidence. I love the look of the AT4 from the 2" lift, tires and wheels, front grille, and of course that amazing tail gate. Some critics have talked down about the anterior of the Sierra's in general. And I have to admit...I have sat in the cabin of Ram, Ford, Tundra, and GMCs. And in my opinion the RAM had the most comfortable seats. But other than the seats all other aspects are in my opinion the same if not better in the AT4. I could never buy a RAM no matter how comfortable the seats are mainly because I don't have any aspirations of being broken down on the side of the road. I think RAM puts so much focus on seat comfort because they at least want you to have a comfortable place to sit when you are in fact broken down on the side of the road and waiting on the tow truck. HA! In closing, I Iove this truck. Has everything I've ever wanted in a truck including a tri-fold tonneau cover which I got my dealer to include in the deal. Couldn't be happier.

We have had seven new GM Trucks over the past ten years. The 2020 GMC SLT 1500 has to be my favorite so far. The 10 speed transmission is the most notable improvement. The larger cabin and tailgate are also very nice upgrades. GMC has the best styling of the 2020 full size pickups IMO. I'm not a fan of the engine shutting off when stopping at traffic lights. I very much agree that the SLT is the best buy the money. This latest body change drives larger than the previous. Over all very pleased with our 2020 SLT and have always favored GMC styling,

Bought a new 2020 SLT (now at 1500 miles). noticed that the truck bed is mounted not straight(crooked from side to side) when I try to put pin stripes on. At 500 miles started rear end clunking noise(apparent known issue but GM don't wanted to correct it on new models?). Dealer did a service bulletin 18-na-183. but didn't fix the problem. Have another appointment with an another dealer on Oct 8 2020. see what happens there. such a headache!

Engine & Electrical problems

Recently purchased my 2020 GMC SLT Sierra 1500 (October 2020). Truck was working correctly for the first 2 months, placed 3700 miles and began to notice the following issues. Hesitation while driving and electronic issues. The hesitation led to engine noise and of course the check engine light activated (multiple alerts posted on driver screen as well), and resulted in the following needing replacement. Top end of engine opened, replaced lifters, and oil control valve. Not what a new car buyer wants to hear within the first three months of ownership. The electronic issues are revolving around the LKA (lane control/assist), and collision alert systems. Noticed that vehicle does not alert correctly when lanes are crossed, noticed that vehicles in front are not detected consistently. My vehicle came with the alert system on the seat as well, and it should work with the lane control system but it is very sporadic. The lane correction on steering wheel is spotty. These are suppose to make vehicle safer, but they don't work. The phone connection with apple car play is also spotty, and at times fails to connect. Recommend new buyers be careful when purchasing vehicles with excessive bells and whistles.

I’ve owned a ‘94, 2002, 2011. Now a 2020. The first three were quiet, very comfortable, wonderful trucks. The 2020 is everything those were except for the damned seats. The seats are horribly uncomfortable. They don’t come close to the comfort of the 2011 I owned. The rest of the truck approaches perfection with only two minor annoyances: is much prefer the infotainment stereo to be either off or muted when I start the vehicle, same with the “Auto Off” feature.

Bought a 2020 GMC Sierra Elevation about a year ago. I like the truck when it works but there seems to be one thing wrong after another with it. Since I had it I’ve had issues with the driver side window making a noise when I roll it down, almost like it is skipping, when you run the air in the summer the undercarriage “ hisses” because the unit drips on the exhaust, my front, driver side break now squeals loudly when I first start it and in return break backing up or going forward, my front driver side seat had an under rail issue (under the seat) where my seat would move forward and backwards when pressing on the gas or break. Not to mention other various problems I had with a gps unit installed after purchasing the vehicle.

I had a 2018 Sierra SLT and thought it was the best truck ever until I traded it for a new 2020 Sierra SLT X31. I went with my son to buy a new 2020 Silverado and while I was at the dealer they made me an offer I couldn't refuse on a 2020 Sierra. I have had it for 2 months and can't believe the improvements over the 2018 which was excellent truck. I love the 10 speed transmission, extremely quite and smooth ride , 5.3 V8 performance, fuel economy, extra room, rear seat hidden storage compartments, adaptive cruse control and especially the multi pro tailgate. The truck feels much more solid and 3 driving modes makes it fun to drive. I do miss the adjustable peddles, Cocoa Dune Leather option and overhead console storage for my glasses but very happy overall. I was unsure at first about getting rid on my 2018 but now I have no regrets and would defiantly buy it again. After 7 months I have found absolutely nothing wrong not even minor issues, great truck built like a watch! Update: I have now had the Sierra for 3 years and 43,000 miles and still the perfect truck, no problems and 18 mpg city 22 hwy average over 3 years.

After 2 months of driving my new GMC Z31 Crew Cab Sierra SLE I am loving it! I upgraded from a Nissan Xterra. The increase in vehicle size takes some getting use to. The additional room in the cab is wonderful. Amazing how all new trucks are loaded with technology and get reviewed based on looks. The remote start automatically heats the steering wheel & cab, fantastic. Pacific Blue Boy is the colour and it can look black in certain lighting. The ten speed transmission shifts flawlessly. The aftermarket Alea leather after market seats are a nice fit for our messy children. The Z31 off road package has a higher clearance to the ground which works well for me at 6’1””. My first V-8 motor in a long time. I love the sound & power. Deep discounts, no interest, and no payments for six months were also very attractive. The back flip tonneau cover will keep the ski equipment safe! Pocket stay anchors help tie down my raft. Overall fantastic!

Battery was dead on several occasions with nothing being left on. Then I was driving home and all of a sudden I heard a banging noise from the back driver side it started to lose power and it just died. I only had 8,200 miles on the 2020 at4. Had to have it towed to dealership on a Saturday and by Monday they still did not have an answer. Hoping to have an answer tomorrow. It died on the way to trade in basically. I heard a loud bang and had to pull over several times on the way to trade it in and the engine light came on. It was a lemon gm refused to replace telling me they would then sending me a refusal email saying it was normal wear and tear? Wtf. Will never buy another gmc again.

Overpriced vehicle with many glitches

The warranty is extremely short and the intellilink system (monitor with all the electronic functions on the dash) is known to go black, not respond, or get insanely glitchy. It will will okay until right after the warranty period ends, then GMC won’t even make a decent effort at trouble shooting it or try to repair it. One is forced to pay for a completely new system and it has to be the same glitchy model (no upgrading to newer systems) leaving one with a bill of parts and labor in the thousands. One may think that the only loss is audio and GPS, but no, it controls climate, backup cameras, side mirrors, and so many other things… The dealers and the corporate office take absolutely no responsibility for a crappy product and simply state that these things happen with cars. If you do your research, you’ll find many people experience the same problem over and over…it’s just not worth paying for a $60k plus vehicle… Switched vehicle make all together and so far, BMW has treated a hundred times better and the vehicle seems to be of far greater quality. Visit GMC and then visit BMW and you’ll see a HUGE difference. Never getting a GMC again.

2020 GMC Sierra AT4 6.2L 10-speed: the absolute best truck I have ever owned or driven. This truck will make it the 7th GM truck I have had, and while they do get better every year this one is heads and shoulders above the rest and miles better than anything else sold by the competition. The 6.2L has loads of power and low-end torque and still achieves 23/24 mpg on the highway even with the offroad tires. It is quiet, refined, luxurious, comfortable, and has options the other manufacturers don't even offer in their luxury vehciles. 10/10

Review choices sis not allow selection of the 6.2 liter engine which here in Colorado is by far my preference. The 10 speed tranny is big improvement over my 2017 1500 6.2 with the 8 spd which I traded in... The AT4 factory suspension has not needed the switch to Bilstein shocks which both my previous 2014, 2017, GMC 1500 trucks required. Big congrats to GMC engineers. I do light towing and only then I feel like a bit stiffer shocks in the rear would be useful. This is best of the 3 GMC1500's I've owned so far. I Love the AT4 package overall. The only issue for me has been this came equipped with Goodyear Dura- Track tires that were terrible for noise and vibration on most roads... I switched them out for some Michelins AT tires at about 20k miles, a vast improvement in noise levels and ride quality. Sold the Dura-tracks to a jeep owner who didn't care about noise. I feel fortunate to have purchased this truck at the end of 2019 before all the chaos in the supply chain showed up. I have about 31K miles on it... Would I buy this truck again? You Bet! I have had friends and strangers ask to buy the truck when I'm ready to sell... Not yet. I have given thought to the 2500 AT4 for its longer bed and higher GVW to be used hauling a camper, however, the current price and availability is a deterrent.

Overall, the best truck I’ve ever owned. There have only been a couple of issues. At about 70,000 miles I caught my first “check engine” light. This truck is immaculately maintained, driven very carefully. I shouldn’t be seeing the CE Light that soon, IMO. I took it to the dealer, it was a $1200 job (GM agreed to cover half, my part was $600) to replace two injectors. I was suspicious because the truck was running perfectly in every way and my fuel mileage was excellent. Well, about 3,000 later it comes on again. Diagnosed as two bad injectors. I decided to treat a tank of gas with Techron fuel treatment. The CE light went off with a day or two. That’s happened twice more since on about 5000 mile intervals. Treated again with Techron…light goes away. Again, truck cranks/idles/runs perfectly…great fuel mileage. I’m thinking it’s an issue with the diagnostic system itself but I’m no professional mechanic. My other issue is around glass quality. My windshield split one summer day when I got in and turned the A/C. The replacement windshield seemed to be a much better piece of glass and has had no issues for years. The side and rear glass water stains very badly. Can’t really be cleaned but the view from inside the truck is still quite good.

Love this truck with the bold design, ride is smooth and it has plenty of nice features. The 10 speed transmission is smooth and I love the multifunction tailgate. Very good truck.

A leading luxury truck but lacks tech luster

We are the 2nd owners of this truck; haven't had it long but are truly impressed by the comfort, the ride, and its features. A bit of a learing curve, and Edmunds was right to recommend the 6.2L V8 (it still gets better mileage than the V6 Dodge truck it replaced), and while it might be called a "light duty" truck it's all business inside and I take issue with their description of "cheapness" - the Denali is leather everywhere and quite stylishly designed. Plenty of room, storage and cubbies that we still seem to be finding, and every option imaginable (shame they discontinued the adjustable pedals). The real shame with this - and I'm guessing it shares with all of GM - is its antiquated tech. My 10-year-old Infiniti - even though it lacks WiFi and most apps - is far more sophisticated than this beast. It's like stepping back into the 20th century when you get to the GM Infotainment System. Everything seems to require a log-in thru OnStar (which we DO have) but "connection error - try again" is an all-too-frequent message (in Boston!). Even their own techs admit the connection "goes out a lot." Sure, you could stream audio (if the connection works) but thankfully Sirius XM isn't tied to OnStar so that at least works. I never thought I'd miss a CD slot but with the GM system it would be a benefit. I do hope they figure their tech out - I doubt they'll do a full refresh anytime soon (controls in the 2022, for example, are pretty much the same) - because this shows just how NOT to put tech in a car. Our 3rd vehicle - a new VW compact SUV - cost 1/2 what this did and it's tech is frankly lightyears ahead. Perhaps GM buyers aren't concerned about tech, but when it comes to things like EVs, it's all about tech, so if this any indication of GM's technology prowess, they are facing a real uphill battle. Bottom line, I would buy this truck again, but in 4-5 years, it will be a dinosaur.
