Best value in its class, but lousy Ford service.

2018 Ford Mustang GT Premium 2dr Convertible (5.0L 8cyl 6M)

I've owned convertibles since I was 16 years of age and I am now in my 70's. This Mustang GT by far delivers the most bang for the buck. I traded a 2016 Mustang 3.7 liter w/16k for this 5.0 GT. Initial cost difference was over $16k which is why I chose the V6 three years ago but having now owned them both, the price difference seems justified. The GT is far superior in every department where there is an actual difference - both cars are woefully lacking in usable rear seat legroom, as in ZERO. At just under $52 grand the GT performs as well or better than cars priced more than $20 grand higher. Controls are easy use and the instrumentation is easy to read. Seats are firm but comfortable and at six-foot-six there is ample front seat leg room as well as enough headroom with the top raised to see out of the windscreen. For a 460 HP engine the fuel economy is remarkable; I'm averaging about 18 mpg city and 24 mpg highway on 87 octane. My 2011 Dodge Challenger Hemi RT winter ride couldn't get past 13/19 and had far less performance. The navigation is easy to use although voice command selections must be exact. The climate controlled seats are superb. Like every car I've ever owned with rain-sensitive wipers (probably 8 or 9) this one is no better, the wipers have a mind of their own when it rains. The adaptive cruise control safety package is an absolute must have option, allows the use of cruise even in moderately heavy traffic conditions and keeps the distance between you and the car in front at a manageable distance at all times. The trunk is very large but the opening small enough to make loading large objects challenging. Raising and lowering the top is a breeze, but it would be nice if you could do it at speeds in excess of the 3 mph maximum limit the system is set for. The new 10-speed automatic transmission is a huge improvement over the 6-speed it replaced (my thoughts in 2019 - but not after 25,000 easy miles...see below), but using the paddle shifters with a 10-speed is way more work than its worth and the Sport mode holds the lower gears so long that it drastically affects the fuel mileage. Styling is a great mix of beauty & function with rear visibility with the top raised better than anything else I looked at. Interior is pleasant and not gaudy like the Camaro - which was so ugly it didn't even matter how the car drove. I'm not particularly brand loyal but we have purchased 5 new Fords since 2012 -two Mustangs and three Edges - and all have performed well with lower maintenance costs than the previous premium brands we owned before. Performance cars are definitely a personal choice based on many factors that have nothing to do with practical choices, but the Mustang GT is worthy of serious consideration when looking at cars between $50 and $80K. Four years in: Other than replacing the garbage Pirelli tires that came with the car, no issues until about 6 weeks ago when the transmission failed to go into gear at a little over 25,000 miles. Towed to selling dealer, knew it was going to take a while due to parts being short, so I actually purchased another car as a spare. Good thing. 5 weeks in and it's still not fixed. Not just because there is a parts shortage, but because Ford wants to try every cheap fix in the book before doing what needs to be done. Either replace or completely rebuild the transmission (it's still under an extended Ford warranty). I could excuse there being a shortage of parts, but not Ford's nickel and dime attitude about fixing a rather pricey toy. A ten-speed automatic is overkill as it shifts way more often than should be necessary, probably accounting for its less than stellar reliability. I had every intention of ordering a new Gen-7 GT until this happened. I get that things break, but when a company you trusted jerks you around to save a couple of bucks, it's time to look elsewhere.

My second Mustang, but not my last

First, I "downgraded" from a 2014 premium V6 pony package to the "base" 2018 ecoboost. Originally went into the dealership to get an oil change, but my internet sales rep (who sold me the V6) made a deal I couldn't pass up - between trade in, dealer incentives, and good research, he found a car that cost me zero out of pocket, and I maintained payments very close to the 2014. First, this car is fantastic! I waited through the 2015-2017 models to finally pull the trigger on this one. The 6-speed manual is smooth and notchy, the steering feel is great in normal, and I almost always drive it in sport plus mode. Fuel economy is great on 89 octane (I've averaged 28.7 mpg from driving off the lot, and average 26-27 mpg daily driving - 60/40 freeway and city). As for performance, wow! The turbo lag is noticeable, but torque is felt almost immediately after 200 rpm. Power does seem to drop off around the 5K range as reported, but I'm usually in the next gear way before redline (this is my daily driver). There is plenty of power for passing, and it seems even faster than my mildly modded 2014. The cloth seats are comfortable, with good bolstering, and the useable trunk space is awesome; my wife and I took a road trip to Vegas, and were able to load a weekend suitcase, two medium duffle bags, several boxes of food and beverages, and still enjoyed the round trip. Creature comforts were awesome, as my pony has the SYNC 3 system. Not only does this give me Apple car play, but dual climate control and other great features. The back up camera is great, but the new Mustang does not suffer visibility issues found in the Camaro and Challenger. The car looks great, is a blast to drive, gives all of the performance you want in a Mustang, gets fantastic mileage (oh, I average over 32 mpg during the Vegas trip), and comfortable enough for even the occasional long distance trip.

This is a high performance car that requires total control with concentration a must at all times. This car should not be purchased by people in poor health as it requires agility to get in and out all the time. A very good performer on the road. Ford has done an excellent job. The Ecoboost really drives close to a V-8 engine. A tribute to Ford Engineering.

This is probably the most upscale, best performing Mustang Ford has offered. It could easily be a Thunderbird if there was a market for it. It's fast - really fast. Puts my 1968 Mustang 390GT to shame (as I remember it). Only improvement I can think of is that I would like more control over the stiffness of the ride. I'd like to use the "sport" suspension with the engine calibration of the sport setting, but still be in normal." (Something like my 1989 CougarXR-7 - a switch on the console. UPDATE: Owned it since new, this Mustang GT lives up to all of Ford's claims. Ten-speed automatic is great (hesitated when purchased - considered the manual as "purist" but glad I went with the automatic). Completed a 7500 mile cross-country trip with over 27 MPG ! However, wish the steering was more precise and there was an always-on indicator of what gear the transmission is in.

We got a good deal on our new 2018 Lightning Blue Metallic 2.3 Ecoboost Mustang. I'm 56, retired/disabled, & have always wanted a new sports car. I had approval on either a 2018 Camaro or a 2018 Mustang. Both were within a $1,000.00 in price, but even though the Camaro had a few extra features, that the Mustang didn't have, i.e. Sirius/XM, touch screen, I decided I had to have the Mustang. The 2.3 liter has more than enough HP for me. The exhaust makes it sound like it's a much larger engine, when you put your foot into it. And because of the turbo, & gearing, it takes you on down the road quickly. The rear seats, are pretty much just for looks, or very small children. But Hey, IT'S A SPORTS CAR! NOT A FAMILY CAR. At the time of this post(2/26/18), I've only had it a little over a month, with just over 500 miles. So there's still time to adjust. UPDATE** (8/26/18) Have now had our pony for 7 months today, & love it more than I did on the first day. Have made a few changes, & added some accessories. i.e. Roush Cold Air Intake, Resonator Delete Y pipe, Mishimoto coolant reservoir, etc. UPDATE** (2/27/19) Having our Mustang just over 13 months, with only 3,005 miles, it's still just as much a thrill getting behind the wheel, as it was the first time. Only I just don't get behind it very often. Getting ready to put a new exhaust system on it, & should give it a little more decibels, & a lower tone. It should also give it a few more hp.
