New Freestyle

I have found the Freestyle to be practical, roomy and fun to drive. It handles like a sport vehicle and gives a nice ride at the same time. It is very flexible in that I can quickly convert from a roomy carry all to a practical 7 passenger vehicle.

I've been very happy with my Freestyle for the last 100k miles and 4 years...but once we hit 130,000 miles the car has developed several squeaks, rattles and several expensive repairs. In the last 3 months we have put $2600 into it. - $830 for a inner tie rod that cracked - $1825 for ball joints & control arms This car eats tires (have put on 3 sets of high mileage tires since 20k miles). Also has had 2 complete brake jobs. Beyond the tire usage, it was a relatively cheap car to maintain, until the last 3 months. The car is getting to expensive to maintain and I am doubting its future reliability.

Not Bad

Traded in my 03 Yukon XL (lemon) and looked for a more fuel efficient wagon with 3 rows. Volvo too expensive. Pacifica close, but price/features no match. Pilot, great vehicle, but mileage like other SUV's. Since it's a Ford, there is no reason why you can't get invoice pricing. Don't believe ads, it's a lie, you'll get about 20 to 25 mpg and there is no way you'll get 500 miles to the tank, unless you're coasting downhill for that many miles. Overall, if you are looking for non SUV, non-minivan, decent room with 3 row seating, fuel economy, feature, content and price, this probably is about the only option. Too bad Toyota, Honda, Nissan had no viable option. May want to check out Mazda CX9.

Freestyle the best kept secret

After a summer of driving the kids around I have to say that the Freestyle is the great family hauler. Have a 2001 Windstar and decided to see if the Freestyle would as good a hauler as a minivan but with a better ride and comfort. Well, the answer is "YES". There is not as much interior space as a minivan but I am over it. The Freesytle is great!

Bought my 2007 SEL AWD in 2008 with 13K miles on it. It was a rental in Alaska before I bought it in the state of Washington. Never a mechanical problem. Engine, CVT and AWD still runs like a champ. Solid as a rock with only a couple very minor trim rattles over rough pavement. Leather has held up well. Sad to see this die (TaurusX ended production in 2010), but its been reborn in the new 2011 Explorer. Same platform, similar interior, just more aggressive looks. Highly recommend getting one if you're in the market for similar vehicle. As for getting one of these used - I would heartily recommend one. TMV under 9K as of Feb 2012 - excellent value and comfort for a family hauler.

We bought this car new in 2007, it was great for years then at 125,000 we had to replace the transmission cost us $3000. Then it stated surging , got the throttle cable cleaned it worked great for another year , now the surging is so bad now that is dangerous to drive , and when we put it in gear it surges then the wrench light comes on and the car cuts off ... Just paid $1200 to replace the air conditioning system. Seems like everything breaks at once and it's all expensive to fix ... I wish Ford would recall the problems and fix it !

I previously owned a minivan and was not expecting much when I bought into the crossover market. However, this car is incredibly fun to drive, and comfortable for everyone. After everything I read about the CVT transmission and the horsepower, I was initially worried it would not have sufficient power; well the critics are wrong, this car has more than ample power. The CVT transmission allows a continuous acceleration until your cruising speed is met. I would recommend this car to anyone needing storage or with a family.

The Freestyle MIGHT be ok for some place like southern California where the weather is mostly 65-75 degrees and gets no real 'weather'. In rain it hydroplanes badly, in snow--best of luck to you. I've driven a number of 2WD Fords and they were all at least good if not great in snow. This one spent an awful lot of time in the ditch. I've been soured completely on front wheel drive vehicles as a result of this one. Second, it has no getup. It sounds fairly impressive when you hit the gas but then when you look at the speedometer....not so impressive. The pulling power was non-existent. We tried pulling medium sized trailer and if I thought it really had no getup before, it really had no getup then. It was not purchased as a pulling vehicle though and was rarely asked to. We went through tires like crazy despite buying a mid-range tire. We tried different brands, same result--flats and bulges at a rate of more than 4x our Ranger or our F150, both of which were more than 10 years older than the Freestyle and all driving the same conditions. We eventually had to buy high end tires and then at least when they went, they were pro-rated. The braking wasn't good, either. It took longer to stop and the ABS were not like any other I have experienced before or since. A lot of the instrumentation was fairly consistent with other Fords except for the hazards. They were down in the middle of the center column just in front of the gear shifter and they were forever becoming engaged. We do at least one trip annually of 10+ hours one way and I felt the seats were uncomfortable after only a couple hours driving. I know this is largely a part of having leather seats but in summer they would burn you and in winter you'd freeze your butt off. I spent about 10 months of the year having to sit on 'something' because the seats were unbearable. The flat being inside under the cargo area was also a disappointment and a giant inconvenience because every time we needed to change a tire (not an uncommon occurrence), we had to unload whatever was in the back. Given this was to go to dog shows and we otherwise travel a lot with our large dogs and gear, this was not a good thing. We had a number of major repairs on it in a short period of time. More recently, the heat went out on it over a year ago, it blew a head gasket about 6 months ago, and at this point we're just waiting for it to be hauled off. I expect my vehicles to last longer than 10 years, usually they make almost 20 and sometimes more. The dealership repair guys got to know us on a first name basis which is never a good thing. While it has fairly high miles on it, the last 30 or 40K were limping it along and our other Fords have done much better than this. My husband had some sort of attachment to it or it would have been gone long ago. It finally seized up and lit up like a Christmas tree so it's blessedly dead. The only things to like about it in my opinion are the IMPRESSIVE amount of passenger and cargo room inside, there aren't many blind spots making it a very safe car to drive, the rear A/C (I have dogs), the fuel economy was pretty good for what it was, the door keypad is terribly convenient, and the seats folded down flat to make it really convenient for those quick runs to the home improvement stores or hauling gear to dog shows. We've replaced it with our second Explorer.

This is a great car. I got the base model with 4wd and this car is loaded with very nice features. Ford put a lot of thought into how the driver uses the car and the interior works great. Bose stereo is great! The interior is better designed than most Japanese cars. This car is deceptive in how much room there is inside. It has more room than my minivan. It rides great and handles well. Great brakes. Engine is low on horsepower. Got a great deal. Comes with 3 year bumper to bumper and 5 year engine warranty which is great.

After 4 years, I am still very satisfied with my Freestyle. No major repairs needed except brakes which were very reasonable. Roomy for my family of 6 and great for road trips. I'm not bothered by the "low power" issues, and it is actually better than most at uphill accelleration. My only gripes are the road noise and that fact that the rear lift gate doesn't close automatically.

I am an avid Ford owner but am extremely disappointed to learn that at 54000 miles I am being told that yes they know there is a problem with the transmission (CVT) and they recognize the risk it poses to citizens but they are not willing to repair at their expense. I really don't want another car but cannot justify repairing this one.

I got talked into this car and have regretted it ever since. It has always given me problems. The surging issue being the most scary. In parking lots, at stop lights, whenever idling the stupid thing just surges forward or in reverse and I've nearly hit people and other cars many times! My foot is completely on the break and it just takes off. It has left me stranded, and I have 3 small children. Now its not shifting out of first gear and the ABS light just came on too. I hate this car. Praying it doesn't cost me an arm and a leg to fix. Ford..you REALLY need to take this seriously and recall these issues! They are dangerous and your going to end up getting sued.

This has been the biggest headache of a car I have ever owned. Every time I think I have the problem solved, something else breaks! I have put in a new transmission, ball joints, breaks, drive train, and steering arm. I cannot get through the payments to trade the lemon in. The people I bought it from can't stand behind it and Ford won't recognize the "lemon law" as well AWwwwww!

Major problem with transmission

I purchased my 2007 freestyle in April 2088 with just over 10,000 miles. The transmission went in 2009, not sure of mileage and had to be repaired. This month at approximately 48,000 miles it went again. Service decided to would be more cost effective to replace with a refurbished transmission. The car is only 3 yrs old! The refurbished transmission (not new) only has a limited warranty and was told by service that if it goes again after warranty, it could cost 3000 to 5000 dollars to fix. I believe Ford new about the problems with the transmission on these cars and purposely failed to tell of potential transmission problems.

I bought our Freestyle to replace a minivan. This car is one of the best layouts for a car on the road. We have approximately 120K on the car. The transmission is fine. I did have the throttle body replaced under warranty but I have discovered that you can easily clean the throttle body with a cleaner made for Fords.

I have to say that I have been very disappointed in this car.We had to replace the brakes and tires within 30,000 miles.Shortly after that we had a throttle body malfunction.Very expensive to fix.We just paid it off early, and it is falling apart. 55,000 miles and the mechanic just fixed the power steering problem, and told us that we need to fix both sides of Wheel bearings.$500 more. We also just found out that we need a new water pump. Another $500. Mechanic said that the transmission is about to go. Dealer said that it was strange to have so many problems for such a new car. No solution. No recalls yet. Don't buy this car unless you have thousands to throw away.

Purchased this vehicle after having a Mercury Monterey minivan. Wife thought she would like something a little smaller so we drove the Freestyle Limited and we both agreed that this was the car for us. We like everything about this vehicle with one exception...we had heated/cooled seats on the minivan and have only heated seats on the Freestyle. Dealer advised me that cooled seats are not an available option. Living in Arizona cooled seats do make a difference.

Ford CVT Transmission problems

Our 2007 Ford Freestyle was purchased used in 2009 with 17000 miles. Immediately a traction controll light kept coming on on the dash. When we took it to the dealership, they couldn't find a problem and we were told to ignore it. Now at 66,000 miles, it has severe problems with the transmission not working. Worse, when we took it to two local dealerships, neither worked on the CVT transmission and wasn't able to diagnose or repair the problem. From reading reviews on the internet, I find that this problem is common in the Freestyle and the lack of Ford Trained Transmission specialists is common also. This car isn't reliable and I would pass on buying another with the CVT transmission.

Bought new. Three years later still very happy with the car. Checking the tires and breaks at each oil change as this appears to be the most common complaint. High teens, low twenties in the ciy and high twenties on the HWY. This is great mileage for such a roomy vehicle. Would highly recommend. Ford Brass/Marketing missed the boat on this one.

I bought this car almost 1 1/2 years ago, and I still adore it! I commuted to work in it for an entire year and I averaged about 26mpg, which is much better than I had expected. This car is nice for traveling across the country, and it drives very well in the mountains here in Colorado! Since I've owned my Freestyle, I've been able to avoid two near-misses with reckless drivers, and I believe that's because even though it's a small SUV/large wagon, it handles like a car. I still get giddy when I see it in a parking lot with other cars, it's so beautiful! In the year and a half the Freestyle has been mine, I've only had to replace my rear brakes.

Purchased this vehicle a week ago and it is great. There is nothing to complain about so far, rides and corners great. The engine is then same engine as our 2004 6 cylinder ford mustang had and sounds and acts exactly the same. Enjoy the beefy sound while accelerating. Was told by a Volvo tech that the chassis was the same as the Volvo chassis,as Volvo is owned by Ford this is not a surprise, awesome vehicle..

Not 3hrs later the check engine light comes on so I figured they might of bumped a sensor or somthing . so when my stepfather gets back he tells me the air box needs to be replaced . now this car has never been in a accident and yet the dealer tells him it was all cracked up and throttle body is rusted so the replaced for like $2000.00 so good enough they get car back .The next morning the check engine light is on again. Now they say it needs a computer for a nother $1500.00 .Now im pulling my hair out feel free to comment .

I enjoyed my 2007 freestyle, but today I found out it had a cracked head, but, cant be fixed, as they don't make that motor nor do they make parts for the motor anymore. So, what is my recourse? The car that I have had for years, not a thing that I can do, leave it somewhere, NOT FIXABLE is what the dealership told me.

I had a 2005 Freestyle and loved it, then I got t boned 😡 my husband's cousin sold me his 2007 and it was sweet but smaller. 2 days after I bought it before having it insured it caught on fire...the ac compressor was the cause. My mobil mechanic friend literally put it back together from the compressor to the wiring. It had 160 something thousand miles when I got it and the transmission is still good but after 300,040ish miles the motor is kaput! That car went from Knoxville, TN to UTC in Chattanooga to Kentucky and so many more states! #noregrets

280,000 miles

I bought my 2007 FWD Freestyle used in 2011 with 108,000 miles on it. It's definitely not a race car, but has adequate power for climbing steep hills. The folding and flipping of the third row is kind of annoying. If you have stuff in the back you have to take it all out to really fold the seat flat. Overall I've been quite happy with the car. I use high mileage synthetic oil and change it every 10,000 miles. It blows about 2 quarts of oil every 10,000 miles, and I just top it off between oil changes. There's plenty of oil coating the underside of the engine, but never a drip in the driveway. Other than oil changes I've replaced the water pump, starter, alternator, and I think I'm on my third battery. My currently has 280,000 miles and still starts runs and drives just fine. Finally going to replace it with something AWD for better traction in the mountains in the winter. I'll pass it down to the kids to drive to school.

I bought my 2007 Freestyle 5 years ago and up until now it's been a good vehicle with few problems, until now! At only 120,00 miles the front end started making noise and I brought it in to two different shops. I didn't believe the first one so I got a second opinion (for $100) the seasoned mechanic told me there were multiple problems with the front end: all the motor mounts are shot, the struts are shot, wheel bearings bad. The worst was the inner bearing on the driver's front. He said that on these Freestyles the inner bearings are extremely difficult to fix and expensive. He said all the front end work would be over $4000 at least. So I guess we're cutting our losses.

We love this car. Practical, comfortable for 4, and practical for 6 (we have all buckets). We have kids to take to and from college and a couple of dogs, and this car always has the room we need. The fuel economy has been great. With careful driving, we average 23 MPG driving around the burbs and 26 on the highway. This car's mileage really goes up if you drive with a light foot. Comfortable and practical, this car is just what we wanted.

I always wanted a Freestyle and found a real bargain in the local area. I've had the vehicle about 6 weeks. Brakes had been repaired before I bought it. Otherwise, the vehicle has been perfect. Wife's car, and I was a little skeptical as she traded a 2002 Lincoln Continental. It's not a Continental, but she loves the high seating and comfort the vehicle offers.

Purchased vehicle with 7.5K, now have near 28K. No issues except windshield washer motor went bad (warranty fix). Good MPG 21 city 26-30 Hwy(60to75mph). Wife says seats and suspension over bumps could be softer. Hwy ride is great! Handles well in mountains. Really like the 3 seats, back rows fold flat. Lots of neat features. Storage in dash is nice. A little noisy on initial acceleration.

I bought the Freestyle after owning several Mercedes, Infiniti and other expensive cars that always were broken and expensive to fix. This Freestyle is wonderful. It is a very user friendly and comfortable design. Everything works and it is comfortable on long trips. I love the silky smooth CV transmission. The car is a nice size. It gets exceptional gas mileage (28 on trips and 21.5 in town) on regular gas. I am very impressed with the quality of this vehicle and like its excellent safety ratings. Ford is building a great car and the 5 year 60,000 warranty is also nice to have. An excellent vehicle and a pleasant surprise.

We bought this for my wife to drive around town. She loves the way it drives and is very easy for her to park. I appreciate the amount of room in the passenger seat for when I go with her. We have an Expedition that we use for long road trips, so it's great for her and her local use.

I bought this car new and it now has 30,000 miles. It has been 100% trouble free and everything works like new. Other than oil changes and tire rotations, the car has not needed any repairs of adjustments. It gets great mileage, even better than on the EPA sticker. I get 21 to 22 MPG in town and 28 to 29 on trips. The car is extremely plesant to drive and is very comfortable, even for tall drivers. The fit and finish are superb, rivaling the Mercedes and Infinity cars I have owned before. The leather seats have very good lumbar support and adjust to very comfortable positions. It will haul large loads with the seats folded down and will pull my 16' boat with ease at 75 mph. A great car

Throttle Body & Brakes

Love the car. Did everything a higher priced vehicle did. Just had the third throttle body put in and they can't tell us why this is happening. The first two were covered under warranty buy the last one cost us over $700. Said for us to pay and they will try to get our money back from factory. What about next time. Brakes keep wearing out also. Hate it but will have to get rid of. Ford should admit they have a problem and fix.

As an engineer I tend to research things to the last detail. I was looking for a family car that had a good combination of safety, fuel economy, roominess, luxury, and price value. After looking at everything made, the Freestyle won. We bought used, a 2007 Limited. The car is amazing; Titanium green w/tan leather interior...gorgeous... Lots of room for storage and very comfortable. The fuel economy on the highway is almost 30 miles per gallon...no kidding....the navagation system is wonderful and the back up sensors are very helpful, as is the DVD. After 6 months, no issues. My wife, who hates SUVs, loves the car and wont let me drive it....Its simply amazing.....Well Done Ford.

243000 miles and still running strong 💪 wouldn’t hesitate to drive coast to coast! Lol there’s plenty of power 80mph speed limits in Texas running 89mph in cruse control and there’s plenty left to pass when necessary. The room and hauling capacity is outstanding. We just bought another one to drive back to Wisconsin from California rather than flying with the Coronavirus happening now.

I have only had my Freestyle a week, but I am already in love. It gets great gas mileage and so user friendly. And it has all the bells and whistles. And seats 6 for hauling the kids and friends. And the CVT transmission is a true asset. This is Ford's best kept secret. I let my dad drive it and he swore he felt it shift. He still doesn't get it. Best thing ever spent my money on.

I traded an 05 Freestyle w/ only 30,000 mi in order to get the CVT which was phased out in the Taurus X! Usually drive machine to 100,000 to 150,000 mi! An hr of expressway driving with the six spd AT after getting used to the small efficient 6 w/ CVT made me take the depreciation hit! My 07 has had no issues mechanically and the fit & finish is excellent! I enjoy getting away from the stoplites faster than most and no hunting for gears as the RPM's stay up and then come down to cruise. Very comfortable vehicle for 6 adults!

My fiancee wanted another Explorer, even though she had numerous mechanical problems with her previous Explorer. She was talked into buying the Freestyle, partly because of the CVT. The car is noisy, sluggish and cramped. The capper? The vaunted CVT failed after 50,000 miles. The price tag? $7,000. Ford disavows the possibility that it was a defect. Have you driven a Ford lately? Good Luck brother!

I purchased this car used with 5,000 miles in the fall of 2007. It has gone through two Buffalo Winters like a charm. The AWD is awesome in the snow and on wet road conditions. There is plenty of room for a family of six. We load the car often for family get a ways and drives like a champ. This is agreat alternative to minivans. Many adults compliment on the room and comfort of the back seats. The kids have plenty of room to claim their own kingdoms with enough closeness to make alliances and enough distance when diplopmatic relationships are on the brink of all out war! If you are in the market for a great family car, look no further. I would recommend this to any family.
