The Focus is a grand vehicle. At 44,000 miles we have had no problems... Great engine and six speed DTC transmission are trouble free! Plenty of pep, room, and comfort. Drives and rides flawlessly!

Just got my 2018 Ford Focus SE. Its awesome. The handling the pick up the comfort just amazing. I have own other Ford Focuses and will be staying with them. If they are well cared for they last forever. When I traded in my older focus for this one it had over 200,000 miles and was still going strong.

Pleasantly surprised for the price

Advertised $4000 rebate and dealer discount got me to the dealer to drive one. Very impressed with handling and quiet ride, for the price. Acceleration is perfectly adequate though not exciting. SEL costs very little more than an SE with automatic, and you get a lot more. Titanium is too much money to put in this car. Drove an S/T and it's a HOOT, like a Golf GTI for thousands less (after rebate); wanted it but wife won't drive a stick shift and it only comes that way. My star-ratings are "for the price." Update at one year - No problems and getting 38 mpg on long highway trips; 27-29 mpg on typical city/suburban driving (doing the math at the pump). One scare: driving up a long steep hill in October with 2 other passengers, I could feel the transmission slipping and then a message appeared on the display that said the transmission had overheated, pull over and stop as soon as possible. I did so, and a few minutes later another message said OK to resume driving. I took it to the dealer the next day and they said no codes came up. It hasn't happened since. Update at 18 months and 28,000 miles: No problems, only expense has been oil changes every 5K miles. Still happy with the car, especially for what it cost. Update at 24 months and 37,000 miles: Check engine light came on in Dec., dealer replaced catalytic converter under warranty. No other problems, only expense has been oil changes every 5K miles. Still happy with the car. Update at 3 years and 45K miles - No problems at all, happy with the car. Update at 4 years and 60K miles - No problems, remain very happy with the car. Update at 5 years and 75K miles - Had to replace the water pump recently, $600. That is the only expense to me other than oil changes and one set of new tires. The car still runs great, very happy. Update at 6.5 years and 88K miles - The car still runs great, paid off long ago, very happy with my purchase. Inexpensive to run except for insurance cost, which is double that of our 2022 Mazda CX-5. Our agent said the Focus has a history of being involved in a lot of accidents, vs. the CX-5 which has one of the lowest accident rates.

We bought this car as a 3rd car for work and to use with RV (flat towable). Absolutely love it! Good looks, lots of features - sunroof, big screen navigation, sharp wheels, upgraded sound system, lots of power, great gas millage, solid ride and priced much less than anyone else for what you get!

2018 MUCH better than 2014

Jess, 05/07/2018
2018 Ford Focus SEL 4dr Hatchback (2.0L 4cyl 6AM)

I was hesitant to buy another Ford Focus after my 2014 purchase and the ongoing issues I've had with the transmission (which has since become a class action lawsuit). However, the difference between the 2014 and 2018 models are night and day, and in more than just the styling. The 2018 SEL Hatchback has a sporty look, feel, and function! I love that it wants to 'get up and go' when I give it gas. The maneuverability and great (it feels so nimble). And, as Maryland summer has started to creep in (since we skipped spring all together), I have yet to notice any lag on the transmission when giving it gas to merge onto the highway all the while have the AC on. I have two daughters, one of which is still in a booster seat, and they are able to sit comfortably in the back with my husband and I in the front. Side note: The back seats must have had a redesign since my youngest is able to buckle herself in the 2018 and isn't able to in the 2014 Focus (even with the same booster seat). Another small detailed change is the location of the door lock/unlock button - in the 2018 model it's on the door, whereas on the 2014 model it's on the center console; this small change makes a lot more sense and I'm glad to see the lock button moved to a more logical location. The hatchback doesn't have a lot of trunk space compared to the sedan but I think that's expected. Or, at least it doesn't feel like the hatchback is as deep as the sedan. Anyway, overall I am a lot more pleased with the 2018 model than the 2014 model. A lot more pleased.

Don't Buy

The clutch assembly was recalled and fixed once then it went again after 6 months, the power train started to fail right outside of the 60,000 miles power train warranty the power train started to go before that but Ford never fixed it because it was all in my head. Then once the factory power train warranty ran out Ford service the head mechanic there told me that I should have known about the power train defects and purchased the extended power train warranty. Ford knows about the defects but won't do anything about it... Don't buy stay away like the plague and like your life depends upon it because it does.. If you smell burning rubber in your engine just remember you drove over a plastic bag and it got stuck in the muffler. It has nothing to do with a bad clutch assembly because we replaced the clutch assembly due to a recall but it has nothing to do with it being faulty. That's everything that a Ford dealership told me.. Ford cars no longer last 250,000+ miles and they don't stand behind their products anymore like they used to. Corporate greed. Don't buy anything with Ford in its name Ever.

Very economical with a decent look for an affordable price. RAN GREAT for 5,000 miles and now when I drive in 6th gear, it’s starting to “shutter” or “miss” a bit off and on. I’m wondering if it’s going to cause any transmission problems down the road like it’s sister automatic packages... I guess we will see

Not my first Focus. After spending months shopping I decided on the 2018 SEL with all the bells and whistles that go with it. I drove a Chevy Suburban 4X4 for about 15 years and the transition from getting up into a vehicle to getting down into a vehicle took some getting used to. The acceleration is acceptable. Small relatively light car for the horsepower. Quiet, smooth driving. I love the handling. Almost sport's car like. The only thing that can be improved on, in my opinion, is the 6 speed transmission. It seems that sometimes it can't decide which gear to be in. But the Select Shift takes care of that. Have not yet gone on a long trip so I have no comment on that as of yet. Planning on driving from Michigan to Florida soon so I'll update my review then. Update: It's now the middle of winter and the car is still functioning fine. Temperatures are well below zero. No problem starting and handles well enough on snow packed roads. I just love the remote start. I start it from my living room and get into a nice warm car. In this cold weather it starts first time, every time.I have no complaints about this Focus. I also installed a K&N air filter (will NOT void warranty). It gives the car a bit of better performance. All in all I,m pleased with my purchase.

I bought this car w 30miles on it. When it reached 500 miles it was in the shop getting transmission work for the clutch. Now it has 3500 miles on it and I’m having problems w reverse. Yes the warranty’s on the car cover it but w it being a brand new car it should not be in the shop twice before the first oil change and I’ve had it only 3 months and have made 2 payments! Not happpy

Bought this car with $5500.00 off the price before I started to deal. After test driving the SE vs. the SEL it was a no brainer to go with the SEL for the money. SEL adds fog lights, black bezel headlights, 17" rims that dress up the black color with black painted rims with just enough chrome to make them look sporty, 8" touch screen sync 3, 4 wheel disc brakes, heated cloth seats, heated steering wheel, ambient lighting that you can change the color, Sony sound system with 10 speakers including a nice size sub-woofer in the back. The sync 3 is worth the extra cost alone. Bought this car in black and had the side and back windows tinted to 18. Car is very sporty and I get compliments on it often. The ride is not harsh but stiff enough to feel stable and safe. I can stretch out my 6' 1" frame and do not feel cramped at all. The car is not a speed merchant by any stretch but when needed it gets the job done. I did not buy it for speed. The mileage I get on this car far exceeds the EPA estimates. I live in a relatively flat area and get 42 MPG at 70 MPH highway. I average 39 MPG at 30/70 city/highway use. The car rides smooth for a small car and is quiet at all speeds. This is a great value at under $18,000.00 OTD. Could not be happier.

Well I just bought it with only 18 miles on it . Drives really good . I have no complaints so far . I really like the Focus and hope it lasts me awhile. Will do an update later on it once I drive it some more Update : Well the car has 13,500 miles on it now . I haven’t had no problems yet . I am averaging about 34.2 mpg so that’s good . I just have the base s model with automatic transmission. I can tell you that I miss not having a cruise control. It gets a little aggravating on long road trips but I manage. The front seats are not the most comfortable on long trips

This is my first Ford and the best quality of this vehicle is that it has a very firm and stable feel while driving very much like German cars. I commute 350 miles/ week and it is a very comfortable ride. I purchased the navigation voice activated package which functions well. The 2.0L engine is sluggish but adequate for my needs. Overall for the price and features it is a car definitely worth considering. Updated: 11/20/2020 Could not be more pleased. I have had not one single issue with my vehicle. I do drive 400 miles per week. My mileage is 42,000 . I will be looking to purchase as my next vehicle their Focus electric. 6/6/2021 The navigation will at times not function when starting the vehicle. After one or two trips, it will starting working again. Overall, I remain very pleased with my purchase

After only 3 years, 44k miles, I already had my transmission go out. All the Ford dealers could not get to fix my car until 90 days. I had no choice but to trade in my junk car for a Toyota corolla. I'm not a big fan of Toyota, however, at least now I know I'll have a reliable car! I will never buy a Ford again! Two cars in a row the same problem. Both at the 44k mark.

I bought this car new in march of 2018. As of may 2020 I have 40,000 miles on it. I have had NO issues with it. All I have done is basic maintenance. Pros: Great fuel mileage (avg of 42mpg over 5k miles) Comfort, it's very comfortable for me. Price Looks good Very reliable. Handling Cons: It is a bit underpowered Before sound deadening, it was a bit loud inside Sync can be a bit temperamental.

Bought this car with less than 30,000 miles on it in 2018.... since then have already had to put over a grand in repairs into it... not at 64,000 miles (just 4,000 miles past the power train warranty) we are being told that it needs a whole new engine!!! Ford won't do anything to help us and the dealership will only give us 5K for trade in for it. We now have to figure out how to come up with 6K for a piece of crap car that we don't even want anymore! Never again will I EVER buy a Ford vehicle!

The dual clutch automatic transmission makes a rattling noise when downshifting. This is normal but still annoying. If I had known the car was equipped with this transmission,I would not have purchased it. What is wrong with equipping the vehicle with a normal 6 speed automatic ? It is unfortunate that the transmission detracts from an other wise excellent car. The car belongs to his wife Mary and she loves the car!

Before considering the purchase of any low-end Ford (fiesta and focus)With an automatic transmission, do a Google search on ford powershift transmission class-action lawsuit. They have been putting unreliable and unsafe transmissions in their economy cars since 2011. I am a former owner of a 2011 Ford fiesta. I got tired of ford lying to me after they replaced the fourth clutch assembly in my car with less than 50,000 miles and telling me everything is fine. And a cruel twist of fate put a 2018 Ford focus SE in my driveway as a company work vehicle. It’s brand new. Same crunching and clicking sounds in the transmission. I already know this car will let me down based on past experience. Same power shift transmission. An almost equal annoyance is the fact that this car‘s Driver seat there’s no lumbar support adjust mechanism. I didn’t know they still made cars Without adjustable lumbar support. My lower back started hurting about a week after driving this thing. Consider another brand. Ford tends to cut corners and issue recalls later

The 2018 Ford Focus is very plain and simple, but durable. It has no CD player .The seats will not hold an over weight person front,or back ,but great for a family of five ,if your kids can get along in back seat touching each other’s legs.It has a spacious trunk for lots of groceries and the back seats let down allowing the trunk to have even more room. The insurance was higher than what I expected 166.00 a month at for a 46 year old women with great driving record. It was more than my sons 2016 Ford Mustang which is 143.00 . The Ford Focus looks a lot like what you see government and city employees driving. There are no fancy bells ,or whistles, but an awesome air conditioner and speakers sound great ,also 30 miles to the gallon for gas highway. I would recommend this vehicle for somebody needing a dependable basic car.

First off I’m not a car person. By choice I prefer something I can go camping in off the beaten path. However a recent bankruptcy filing made me have to step back a bit. As a result, I stumbled on this car. I didn’t want it at first. The dealer pretty much talked me into it. However the dealer made a good point that I needed something now and can work back into my preferred off-road vehicle later. So I took this Ford Focus. It does drive well. It’s comfortable in all regards, with my only complaint being the steering wheel. It feels high, so I go to lower it, but when I lower it enough to be comfortable, it obscures the instrument panel. Other than that, this vehicle handles well and will definitely do good for getting me where I need to go until I get back on my feet. The MPG for me is averaging 38, which is outstanding for saving money on fuel. If you are like me and need a cheaper vehicle that is not aged, and is reliable, a Ford Focus should be on your list of choices.

I have driven this car for a month now. I have become familiarized with the reality that this car has a "Dry Dual Clutch Automated Manual Transmission". The transmission has a higher than average rate of problems. Mine has behaved within the range of normalcy. It can shudder at low speeds when I have been driving for awhile and the car is hotter, but the car seems to perform better when I accelerate more generously and avoid creeping or inching forward. Despite the downsides, I actually enjoy the exciting character of this transmission. The 2018 Ford Focus is a very handsome vehicle despite its dated interior design. It is just pleasing inside and out. Had I done more research and had more options I would have probably not bought this car, but since it was pretty much what I had to take given my circumstances, I am happy as long as it continues to perform as well as it has on the road. The car is safer than most other cars the same size when it comes to side impact crash tests and its design. A lot of anecdotal reports of people being well-protected in T-bone crashes.

I am leasing a 2018 Ford Focus SE sedan. I received the car in March. The first day I had it I noticed the temperature gauge hardly moved after at least 8 miles. Since the summer is now over I have come to the conclusion the thermostat opens to soon. Therefore letting the anti freeze flow too soon creating a very cold engine. It looks like I'll have to change the factory installed thermostat to a more reliable one now that the winter is approaching.

The SEL hatchback is the way to go. I got mine new with a handful of miles on it. It handles well, has enough power to pass cars on the highway and it looks great doing it. The touchscreen is great although I did have to replace mine within a few months. It was a faulty unit, covered by my warranty. It's low maintenance, comfortable, and a great daily driver.

What kind of company leaves a 19 year old driving a car with a known transmission shudder issue, that is under warranty I might add, Ford that’s who. “American” made cars are just not worth it anymore and the makers do not stand behind their brand as they should. 😡 Note to anyone with a Focus, beware of the transmission! It’s a known issue by Ford yet they won’t repair or replace until you have a problem therefore if you get beyond that warranty guess what, you’re up the creek.

I've had my bright blue 2018 Focus H/B since I purchased it Nov 2018. This is the 5th Focus I have owned since 2000, and is definitely the best of the breed! I've only had two service issues, beside a minor side swipe hit-and-run, being a flat tire and a corroded voltage sensor. It gives me daily driving at 30-32 mpg, while highway mileage consistently exceeds 40 mpg! I've only got 54k miles drive, so most of our driving has been of the local nature! The one thing that astounds most folks is how comfortable it is for my 6' 8" frame!

This was my Non used car I bought. I work I'm San Francisco live in east bay so this car save money big time. I have a automatic transmission 1.0 liter ecoboost. I'm 6'1 its good for two people my size but trying to fit people in back is a pain, very difficult and uncomfortable. In general car is excellent if your tall 2 max little short not so long legs I can 4 people in car.

I will never purchase another Ford. I bought this vehicle used from a dealership and since then, I have been back and forth to the repair shop. I plan on trading this vehicle in for a Honda or Toyota - something actually reliable! This vehicle has several open recalls with no anticipated remedy. This is negligent on the part of the manufacturer and should be illegal. If anyone knows of a class-action lawsuit against Ford, please advise me [contact info removed]!

I would not buy this car. It has negative issues. The first is the terrible placement of the speedometer- the steering wheel blocks the right side of it, making it necessary to lean to the left to see the WHOLE speedometer. [ Easy way to get a speeding ticket -"guessing your speed"]. The second issue concerns the back seat head rests. They are too high and block the driver's field of vision when checking for traffic on your right side. The third issue is the trunk latch. Two months into my lease I occasionally, six times to be exact, have had to pull over and close the trunk- after driving a short distance, because the trunk icon shows the trunk is ajar. This happens even though the trunk is "slammed" shut after loading. I would not recommend buying this car. Poor designing. Save your money. In the past I have purchased MANY Ford cars and trucks-and loved them all. I will never consider a Focus due to these three issues. They make this car unsafe to drive ! Be safe. Stay away from the Focus!

If you want a boring daily driver this is it. Interior is crowded and I'm not a large person. Bought the top end model and the heated seats are nice and remote start is handy on cold days but beyond that it's just a daily that gets good gas mileage. Hopefully won't have problems with the auto manual transmission.

Great little car that is a gas sipper. Incredible MPG! Doesn’t have alot of get up and go from an acceleration standpoint. We did have a problem with the steering wheel becoming loose, and there’s no recall on it thus far. Caution: the interior size and very small. But driver’s and passenger sides. Not intended for drivers over 6’2. I’m 6’4, and can’t get out of it without nearly breaking my neck moving my head under the door opening. My knees also are in the dashboard, even with the seat as far back as possible. Luckily it’s my wife’s vehicle, and she’s 4’10 and fits her perfectly.

I love Penny. My 2018 Ford Focus S. E..

My car's name is Penny. She runs great on 90+ octane, but better on Flex fuel. You know that stuff that is put in racecars. Ford has given us an affordable yet no frills racecar that noone except myself and my girlfriend wants. Shame that it is no longer is being produced. With Flex fuel, rated at about 107 octane, Penny gets to 60mph from4.5 to 6 sec. Damn good for a cheap racecar. I just wished Ford kept the Focus and made it better. It was becoming ecsteticly pleasing to look at. Especially the S.E. sedan. The hatchback and R.S. and S.T. s were ugly. Funny thing, they had a faster powerful engine than the sedan. Another disappointment. Why Ford doesn't use Volvo tech on these cars is beyond my comprehension. If they gave Penny a smaller turning radius like older Volvos that car could do a 360° on a two lane road. Nuff said.
