Run! Run Away!

Buy anything other than this car. My 2013 Ford Focus has been parked broken down in my yard for two months now while I wait for a part. There may be a ton of them for sale now and they're cheaper and get better mileage than their competitors, but don't buy one. I read so many raving reviews of the Focus I thought that Ford had the issues worked out. The car I got wasn't bad when I bought it. It had great fuel economy and could fit five passengers. The vent select stopped working right away and the horn never worked, but it is a nine year old car. I wasn't expecting perfection. I never experienced the slow speed shudder and jarring shifts so many other owners reported. Then two months later it developed the infamous transmission TCM issue. It lost reverse and gears 2, 4 and 6. I could limp it home if I revved the engine and let off the gas like I was driving a three-speed manual, but was told the problems would just get worse and more frequent. The dealer told me the TCM is covered by an extended warranty. Unfortunately there are no replacement TCMs available and no date when they're expected. I'm stuck with junk.

Another Lemon DCT owner

3 clutch replacements, 2 TCM replacements and more software upgrades than can count, and 1 full transmission replacement. Currently at 46k miles. Bluetooth doesn't work, sync system is unreliable. Tons of intermittent problems that Ford can't replicate so they can't fix. The transmission is just completely dangerous, step on the gas 10 times and you will get 10 different responses. Sometimes the transmission can't decide what gear to go into and will constantly shift up and down, when this happens on the freeway you will change lanes to pass someone doing 70 and the transmission will keep shifting up and down until you coast to a stop. Everytime we take it in the shop they tell us "this will fix it." We bought the car with 10k miles on it 14 months ago for $17k, we now have 46k on it now and when we went to look at trading it in at the same dealer they offered $3k and told us they really don't want it due to the issues. This is a FORD dealer. 90% depreciation in one year and that was on a used car that already should have had the first big depreciation. Look at the latest consumer reports the focus and Fiesta's were rated 6/100. This is a bigger P.O.S than the PINTO. Also the transmission problems have us averaging 24mpg which they say is normal. (UPDATE: 5/23- 63,000 miles now. More clutch and TCM problems, dealers just tell you its the car "getting used to your driving style" and that the shuddering, chattering erratic, dangerous behavior is normal. Can't get 20K out of a set of 70k mile tires (properly inflated, maintained and rotated) as the chattering wears tires. Dealer has "reflashed the TCM" repeatedly and it does not get better. Dealer says its unfixeable but its not bad enough to fail their test to get Ford to pay for the "fix" that itself is only temporary. Easily worst car we've ever owned to the point we bought a Honda Fit to have something reliable and only drive this car when we absolutely have to.... UPDATE 2019.... Luckily the car was totalled in January of this year so I am finally rid of this lemon and last FORD product I will ever buy. We were rear ended and pushed passenger side first into an 18 wheeler at around 20mph, The car was totalled. The passenger side airbags all failed to deploy. When the fire department arrived on scene he removed the door by hand. Overall very disappointed in the way the car held up.

Bad Transmission problems! I have had my car now for almost 3 years now. It's in the repair shop a second time for a bad transmission, fried computer, and burnt up clutch! This was my first newest car I ever bought and I am so disappointed with the Lemon Transmissions that Ford has put into these vehicles! I would highly recommend that anyone walk away form this year and any other year models that would have the same Transmissions! :-(

This care has never left me on the side of the road. I bought the manual transmission because the reviews were better and I don't care what the car was rated - I GET OVER 42 MPG on average! People - ethanol free fuel keeps a small engine running better and longer. I have over 150,000 mile on this car and it has been great. Yes, it is small but worth the savings!

Absolutely love it!

I love this car! Got it in April, now have just 6000 miles on it. Mileage started out a little low, 31 mph, but am now getting right around 37 mpg and I drive various traffic situations. I waited a long time to get a Focus, rode in several other Focuses and knew this is what I wanted although I had to trade in my 2000 Explorer XLS to get it. I do miss the extra cargo space, but the overall ride, flip down rear seat makes up for it. I have the Focus Sedan SE with 6 cyl. automated manual transmission. Did not see a selection for it.

Great Car to Drive... Back and Forth From the Shop

I loved this car for the first couple years. Fun to drive, zippy, good handling, looks good, has great features (even if a bit wonky sometimes), very practical for gas mileage and storage. I have the manual 5 speed, no problems there. BUT - just after the warranty expired I've had problem after problem with the steering and suspension. I've taken it in something like 6 or 7 times in the past 2 years, spent maybe $6000 on non-maintenance related fixes. Tie-rod replacement - both sides busted and repaired separately. Bushings in the suspension replaced. Electronic power steering crapped out and had to replace the whole steering column. Alignment issues leading to tire issues, brakes wear quickly. It's become a money pit even after paying it off. Wish I could recommend it, but it's simply NOT RELIABLE. It's an economy car that is frustratingly expensive to upkeep.

13' SE/Auto: Great Commuter

I bought my focus back in February ( it is now April) and I have 4,000 miles on it. I commute 60 miles a day, 5 days a week, most of it highway. The Focus is very comfortable on the highway. The ride quality is very smooth and composed, and the ride is quiet. The interior is well put together, no squeaks/rattles. The Engine has very good power and is smooth. the transmission isn't great, but is generally smooth and quick to shift. Fuel economy is very good, averaging 32mpg in mostly highway driving with some city. Exactly matching the EPA combined rating. The backseat is a bit tight, though not intolerable for two adults. Trunk is big. No problems so far.

A Must Have Car!

I recently purchase a brand new Ford Focus Titanium. I am very happy and would recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a cool-looking ride with great fuel mileage in mind. My car has everything except for a moon roof. It's a little tight on room but you must consider that I am 304 lbs. So, of course it's going to be snug. Everything works great and the transmission shifts just fine. It's quiet and smooth and in my honest opinion, the best Focus that Ford has ever produced. Purchased at: Mac Haik Ford-Lincoln in Georgetown , Texas. The Titanium package is the way to go! Or as an alternative, choose the SE model with the 201A option package.

Must get the standard transmission.

Matted to the 5 speed standard gearbox this car is an excellent "driver's car". The transmission is easy to shift and very smooth although not as refined as some European offerings. The car handles well and acceleration is excellent. This car was reading 165 WHP on a dyno- completely stock! Those are very impressive numbers for a car that is getting 30+ miles to the gallon and an excellent start if one was to consider tuning the vehicle. The interior feels like a much more expensive car than it really is. My only gripe is with the Ford My Touch System- it can be very frustrating and difficult to use at times- even three years after owning the car. Also, this car gets a lot of knocks because of the automatic transmission that most came with.. well if you can't row you own gears I don't feel bad for you. If your buying a 4 cylinder vehicle with an automatic transmission I'm not really impressed with your decision making skills. A standard is always the better choice with a smaller engine.

We bough this car 5 days ago. It has less than 350 miles on it and is making a horrible rattling noise. Hundreds of threads out there of people complaining of the same issue that appears to be related to the transmission and FORD does not have a fix. It's horribly disappointing to have this happen so soon. Stay away from this car!

Hearing a lot of bad reviews about the automatic not being a good choice. Duh, it's a 4 cylinder! What were you expecting the automatic version to be like? When has a four cylinder with an automatic ever been a good, reliable, engaging choice? [non-permissible content removed]. I leased this car with 90 miles, it now has 21,000 trouble free miles on it and I'm seriously considering buying out when the lease is up. The My Touch sucks and has been the only glaring deficiency. When an aftermarket system is available best believe the annoying Ford voice is gone. Drove this 1,600 miles across the country with out a hiccup. It was a very comfortable ride too.

Balance of fun with practicality. With back seats down I can carry a lot, always fun to drive and inspires confidence. Menu system is a little hard to get used to, but simplifies the dash layout for the things you do most often. In a modern car with many features this will always be the case. The back seat is short on space for an adult, but better than some other cars in this class. At least the windows let the back seat occupants feel comfortable and the 4-doors give them easy in-and-out.

I bought my Ford Focus SES new and have performed all of the routine maintenance myself. The vehicle has not required any repair. I primarily drive and service with an emphasis on preserving the reliability of the automobile. I have replaced the battery and wiper blades only. The origional tires show 50% wear. I live in Las Vegas, NV, and high summer temperatures kill automobile batteries. I get only 2+ years of battery service in our vehicles. I buy batteries from Ford. They last longer than other batterys, ie: Walmart, K Mart, etc. If I drive conservatively, I achieve the EPA fuel economy ratings. Best handling small car I have ever owned. 37K miles, Always garaged.

I went to trade my black 2005 ZX4SE 5-speed in for (hopefully) another black 5-speed Focus back in January 2012. Ended up with a pewter-colored PowerShift (sales manager said I'd get better gas mileage with the auto). 5,495 miles was all I could stand - A/C only worked intermittently (dealer said that was normal), front end made loud crunching noises over bumps, and the transmission felt like a bag of bolts hanging underneith the car. I replaced this car with a 2013 GTI - wish I'd dumped Ford long ago.

Save yourself the headache, the constant trips to the service department and being broke down on the side of the road. This car is beyond unsafe. I've had it for 2 years and its had transmission issues the entire time and has a active recall on the transmission. It's on its way back to get repaired for the 5th time and I'm sure it will break down again. Ford doesn't do anything to help. So I'm stuck with a car that value is very low because of the recall. I'm looking at a $6,000 loss if I trade it in. I will never ever buy a ford anything again. Please don't buy this car.

2013 Focus is huge mistake!

I bought a Ford Focus 2013 a couple of months ago being told it had an automatic transmission. It jerked and acted weird during the test drive, but the salesman said it would "learn" my driving style in 2 weeks. After 2 months and 450 miles , took it to service dept for low gas mileage (less than 20 city) and jerky transmission. They said it takes 1,000 - 3,000 to break in. Read the other blogs and asked them to take it back. Ford offered us a lousy deal, so we traded it in and bought a new Camry. Real car with a smooth transmission and gets better gas mileage than the Focus. Ford needs to recall the "automatic" Focus. The transmission doesn't work! Buyer beware!!

Bought a used low mile auto Focus that has been maintained. What a terrible vehicle. In what world can a car company not build a stereo that works? The transmission is sloppy, the engine feels poorly built, gas economy instruments are considerably wrong. I did not have high expectations but Ford has smashed through the floor.

Worst car ever

Aw, 01/31/2019
2013 Ford Focus SE 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl 5M)
1 of 1 people found this review helpful

The car has severe transmission, transmission module and dual clutch issues. Ford will cover their mistakes only to 100,000 miles, after that you are on your own. The dual clutch will go out every 30,000 miles regardless of how you drive the car. That is $4,000 a year. Then the radio goes out about once a year. Ford never covers that. $1,000 a year. You will need to replace tires once a year. The car will not hold an alignment. Regardless of how often tires are rotated, this car eats the tires. When its under 50 degrees F, the car must be driven with defrosters on because the Windows fog up. Engine gaskets went and coolant ends up in the engine at 130,000 miles. Always kept up with oil changes and service.... Its just a crappy car.

The Ford Focus automatic is the worst car I have ever owned. I had the car for almost four years and I had to get the transmission recall fixed 4 times. The last time I had it fixed it was shuttering almost a week after I paid to have it fixed. They said the recall didn't cover it if the car had over 100,000 miles on it. Which is absolute crap considering the car shutters and doesn't accelerate which is a safety concern. I had to literally beg and threaten Ford Corp to help me pay for the 4th transmission fix. I still had to pay $400 out of my pocket to fix their horrible car. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR. When I tried to resell it it was worth 1/3 what I owed and my only option was to take a loss and trade it in on a lease and roll over the negative equity. IT WAS A NIGHTMARE. DO NOT BUY THIS CAR.

We love this car for what it is, a reliable and nice driving utility vehicle. While not an SUV it is versatile and very useful at hauling stuff. It routinely gave us 40mpg on the highway. We've had no problems with the car, though we don't like the automatic transmission, its rubbery and always wants to be in top gear to save gas. As a result it tends too slow unless you put it in sport mode and shift yourself. We also note that the air coming out of the vents in summer is warm unless we have AC on. No other complaints. Solid and reliable, fun to drive and comfortable on trips. The hatch back holds an amazing amount of stuff for such a small car. We've recently traded it in on a new 2016 Focus ST. We were seduced by the power and fun to drive factor and by the great price the dealer offered us.

This car is currently giving me tremendous problems with the faulty transmission. Am forced to pay nearly $3000 to fix this issue which is clearly Ford's fault for selling this in the first place. Called customer service to complain and they told me it was just a bad coincidence for my car to get a bad transmission from a bad auto plant but then offered no aid whatsoever. My loyalty to Ford has now ended. Honda/Mazda here I come!

Do not make the mistake I did. I bought a used 2013 focus SE hatchback with 5 speed manual. It had 40k miles when I bought it and I just got rid of it with only 124k miles. Engine problems are the main reason I got rid of it. Needed a new engine after only 124k miles. I keep up with maintenance on my car religiously. Oil changed every 5000 and so on. Absolutely unacceptable for an engine to die this early. It also got surprisingly not great gas mileage. Averaged 29.7 mpg with my mixed hwy/city driving. Best I ever got with all hwy driving was 32mpg. I feel like the car needed a 6th gear, which the don't offer in a manual for some reason. In addition, the interior build quality is horrible. The interior is mostly plastic, and the panels started rattling very loudly around 50k miles. Every time you start the car, especially if it's cold, it's unbelievable how loud it rattles. It quiets down a little when you get going, but it's never fully quiet. This next one doesn't necessarily apply to me, but stay away from the automatic. I had the manual and that was the one thing that didn't seem to have an issue on mine, but that dual clutch automatic is awful. So bad they had a class action lawsuit against them. These cars are pure junk. My wife's co-worker had a 2012 focus which is basically the same as a 2013, and she had to get her engine replaced at 104k miles as well. Instead of paying to get the engine replaced, I did what I should have done in the first page and traded it for a Civic. Going to get better gas mileage, and their reliability is pretty legendary at this point. I regret the day I bought this car.

I bought my 2013 focus in Oct 2012. It had a few issues, the door latches failed - recall, the dual clutch transmissiion had issues - recall. But other than that it's a nice little car. I can easily get 40+ MPG on my 30 mile each way commute, with traffic. It isn't gutless, it doesn't wallow or plow around corners, as long as you don't try to drive it like a sports car. For what it is, it's not bad. BTW, I bought it because my '92 5.0 mustang was getting unreliable and my 2003 F150 gets around 16 MPG...

I bought this car new in June of 2013. I commute 70 miles each way and the gas for my SUV was killing me. I test drove the automatic and disliked the feel, then drove the 5 speed and liked it much better. I now have 55k miles on the car and it still runs as well as when I drove it off the lot. I have had no mechanical issues whatsoever in all those miles and have found the Focus to be a comfortable vehicle. A third of my commute is down a windy mountain road and the Focus handles it very well. It drives well in the rain and I had no complaints with its abilities in the snow last winter. Overall, an excellent vehicle.

First the good news: That auto parallel parking feature actually works reliably. That is where the good news ends. I purchased this car in 2012 and it is already on its third set of clutches and those are already starting to slip. The strange "automated manual" transmission has simply been a lemon from the get-go. Luckily the warranty of the transmission was extended so I am not paying for these repairs, but the downtime is a bother. The transmission is the reason the car has no pep from a dead stop. When I turn right from a driveway or parking lot onto a road, I know I need to have at least a block of clear space because the car is going to hesitate very badly turning from a dead stop. If there is a semi coming I would be creamed before I could coax the car to a normal driving speed. Also, at freeway speeds, if I hit the brakes for any reason (say, someone changes lanes too close in front of me) the car reacts like we are stopping and begins to downshift. If I hit the gas again, the transmission dithers and I have to step the pedal to the floor to motivate the car. If fact, in general, a hard stomp to the floor is the only way to speak to this car when it doesn't want to go from first to second gear. This will be the first car, in my lifetime, that I have ever decided to sell before owning it outright.

I researched Mazda 3, Chevy Cruze, Buick Verano, & Ford Focus, & contacted dealers online. Then I test-drove them in that order. When I got to the Ford, the car just felt right for me in a field of very good cars. Ended up buying a Titanium sedan at Cerritos Ford in September 2012. Great service from sales rep Kathy Bailey & service rep Sergio Ortiz. Drove the car across the desert southwest when it had less than 500 miles on it, was pleased at gas mileage of 37 & doubly pleased that the long drive was less tiring than in my 2008 Lincoln. The car is adequately powered, great handling, quiet, smooth, & best of all, fun to drive.

I loved my 2013 Ford Focus SE hatchback, and I mean loved it! Great gas mileage, every option in the book, comfortable, great sound system, perfect size for me. Loved it! That was, until the transmission again started giving me trouble that I knew needed addressed. I had the car into the dealer over the almost 6 years I owned it. The ran the “flash updates” and did the transmission updates. Since Ford had extended the warranty to 150,000 miles or 10 years, I felt comfortable we were ok. After all, I hadn’t been to the dealer since 2018. In December, some shuddering started. I called dealer first week of December only to find my 10 year warranty expired November 30th because 11-30-12 was when car was originally driven off the lot. I still took the car in to get an estimate. It was clear it would need to be addressed. Dealer attempted to re-set the driver adaptive memory. That helped, for about 5 miles. Took it back. Dealer said new transmission would be between $3,500 and $7,500. Exact amount wouldn’t be known until they got into it. But…they said this would not be the only time I would need this replacement done. What??? I asked the service advisor what he would do if this was his car. He said he would get out from under it as parts were not even readily available to fix it. Took the car to an independent mechanic. His evaluation, get out from under it if I could. Two mechanics, same advice. Sadly, I did just that. Traded in my Focus on a Honda. Ford should have stood behind their product with this dual clutch. Compensation should have been given to owners. Yes, I received a gift card for a couple hundred dollars as part of the class action lawsuit. That is nothing compared to the money I lost on this car. Do better Ford!

130K trouble-free miles...because I have the 5spd. This is truly one of the best cars for the money I've owned. Reliable, good MPG, comfortable on the highway, and handles great in the corners. The engine mated with the manual trans has just enough fun factor. Really a shame that Ford messed up the auto (DCT) trans, because these were really good cars.

In July purchased a new 2013 Focus standard transmission. I traded the car in and took a $3,000.00 lose, but worth it. commute 200 KMs daily and when the car was at 1600 KM I heard a clunk while on the HWY in 5th gear doing over 100 KM an hour. The car would not accelerate over 80 KM, the dealer looked it over and said nothing is wrong. A few weeks later sitting on the HWY stopped behind other vehicles and tried to accelerate into the right lane. The car chugged and almost stalled, this has happen a few times. I have an open CSR with Ford and they told me to leave the car with them for the week. I was told they couldn't find anything so I took a mechanic out for a drive. The issue happened, I am told this is normal traction control stop the C

The 2013 Focus - Great Car

We have owned the Focus for one month and it has proven to be a great car to this point. We have had none of the transmission problems we read about in other reviews. The vehicle we have was manufactored in December of 2012. The car is very responsive and has very good fuel mileage and is near the advertised MPG. The controls are easy to reach and clearly displayed. Ours does not have the navigation system, but all other functions have had no problems.

2013 Ford Focus SE automatic Hatchback I wish that I had never bought this car. For starters, the average fuel economy is not what Ford advertises. My average MPG is 32 hwy at 69mph. The best was 36mpg with a tail wind. I can live with the poor fuel economy...but the deciding factor for me to get rid of this car is the Torturous seats !! The seats are rock hard ! They feel like you're sitting on a park bench ! The padding in the seats is very minimal. Push down 1/2 inch and you can actually feel the metal framework of the seat. The very design of the seats are not ergonomic. The front of the seats are tilted in a way that if you stretch out, the back of your legs will begin to hurt

Not worth the gamble! Sure some of these cars are fine, but there seems to be a high percentage of true lemons. Despite an extensive test drive to stay clear of the bad DCT and all, a few hundred miles later, I seem to be the lucky winner of one of the worst of the worst. This car started going downhill fast once about 4 or 500 miles was put on it. This car is now as loud as a soft top jeep on the highway, and with the dct transmission is one of the poorest driving cars I have EVER experienced. This car is 110% poorly constructed junk. Frankly I would rather walk then drive this loud bucking surging grinding rattling embarrassing piece of excrement. Worst purchase I have ever made.

If you want an automatic DO NOT buy this vehicle. Ultimately, I would urge you not to buy this vehicle regardless. 2013 Ford Focus Titanium Auto with only 36,000 miles. It has been plagued with problems since I bought it. Clutch was changed 6 months ago and it's back to acting as it did before. Now it's back at the dealer for the 3rd time because they cannot identify a hum while braking. $900 later it's not the brakes or struts as dealer had indicated. Only thing worse than the quality of the car is the dealer service. Two weeks wait just to look at the car. I've had the same issue with my wife's 2018 Ford Explorer Platinum that cost over $50,000. Service is slow and substandard. No loaner cars. I have four teenage drivers and own six vehicles. I never have issues with the Mercedes, Nissan, Toyota and even the Hyundai. Only the Fords. Will NEVER buy Ford again. Just awful. Waiting for the right moment to unload both of them and that can't get here quick enough.

Listen.. I’m honest and I’m not trying to slander Ford here. But within the first 20,000 miles my TCM (trans control module) needed to be replaced. Which is actually out for a recall and luckily my warranty covered it so I was okay with that. But then my ACM (audio control module) went out.. this is by far the most annoying thing I’ve had to deal with any of my cars. This is not covered on the warranty yet thousands of customers reportedly have had the same issue. Your cars radio will stop working and you get really loud random crackling and popping sounds! This becomes super distracting and it’s scary because you don’t know when it’s going to happen.. I called ford and they said they wanted $150 to diagnose the problem.. okay so I paid it. THEN they tell me it’s the ACM and they want $800 more dollars to replace, install and program it!! Now why should I have to pay for something I didn’t know was defective? It’s also a huge safety hazard when you’re driving!! I’m not the only one with this issues and it SHOULD be covered in the warranty. Anyways.. the controls modules in these vehicles are crap. Don’t buy this car unless you want to deal with shifting issues and radio issues. No help from Ford what so ever. I won’t be buying another.

I find myself looking out at it or taking quick glances at it when I am at home...I researched a long time to locate the car I wanted, and I found it. at firs,t I didn't care about the color because I would have been happy with a few other choices, but the color is actually one of the things I like best about it. I chose a dark, sparkly pewter color. It looks understated and classy. The other thing I adore about it is the quiet drive. I can shut everything out and just drive...awesome!

Everything's working except (1) rear view camera screen losses the electronically superimposed guidelines by itself, occurring nearly every other day, (2) A/C button on climate screen is lit after start but manual control screen says AC is off. Gas mileage ok, but not impressive, only 29 mpg compared to my '03 Murano's 21 mpg for the same driving. Handling and ride are decent, bordering on fun. reasonably quiet with bare minimum acceleration power. Braking is not confidence inspiring.
